Entropy production versus memory effects in two-level open quantum systems

We compare several definitions of entropy production rate introduced in the literature from a large variety of situations and motivations, and then analyze their relations with memory effects. Considering a relevant experimental example of a qubit interacting with a single bosonic mode playing the role of a finite bath, we show that all definitions of entropy production coincide at weak coupling. In a stronger coupling regime, significant discrepancies emerge between the different entropy production rates, although some similarities in the overall behaviour remain. However, surprisingly, two of these definitions --one based on local quantities of the system and the other on non-local quantities-- coincide exactly, even in the case of strong coupling. Finally, a high degree of correspondence is observed when memory effects characterized by P-divisibility are compared with the sign of all entropy production rates in the case of weak coupling. Such correspondence degrades at stronger coupling, leading us to extend the concept of entropy production to the dynamical map. We show a perfect equivalence between the sign of this enlarged concept of entropy production and P-divisibility, both numerically and analytically, in the case of phase-covariant master equations.

Johann Heinrich Lambert's memoir "Theorie der Parallellinien": A review with commentary

We review the memoir \emph{heorie der Parallellinien} by Johann Heinrich Lambert, written in 1766. Lambert, a victim of the prejudices of his time, conceived this memoir as an attempt to prove the so-called parallel postulate of Euclid's \emph{Elements}, and consequently, the non-existence of the geometry that we now call hyperbolic geometry. In fact, by developing the foundations of a geometry obtained by replacing the parallel postulate with its negation while keeping Euclid's other postulates unchanged, Lambert was hoping to arrive at a contradiction. Of course, he failed in his endeavor, but these attempts at proving the parallel postulate implicitly contain, without Lambert having foreseen it, fundamental results of hyperbolic geometry, the discovery of which, by Lobachevsky, Bolyai and Gauss, was not to take place until the following century. Thus, Lambert's memoir (which he did not intend to publish but which was eventually published in 1895) constitutes one of the founding texts of non-Euclidean geometry. Spherical geometry is one of the three geometries of constant curvature, the other two being Euclidean geometry and hyperbolic geometry. In this sense, along with hyperbolic geometry, spherical geometry constitutes one of the two non-Euclidean geometries. In fact, Lambert, like Lobachevsky and others after him, understood the deep relationships between the three geometries: Euclidean, spherical, and hyperbolic, in particular the formal and the more profound analogies between the trigonometric formulae, the properties of birectangular isosceles quadrilaterals and of trirectangular quadrilaterals, the monotonicity properties (which can be formulated in terms of convexity properties) which hold in opposite senses in spherical and hyperbolic geometry which at some points he calls a sphere of imaginary radius. It is for these reasons that we decided to include in this volume, dedicated to spherical geometry, a chapter on this important memoir by Lambert, trying to highlight its most important ideas. This paper will appear as a chapter in the book ``Spherical Geometry in the Eighteenth Century I: Euler, Lagrange and Lambert'', ed. R. Caddeo and A. Papadopoulos, Springer Nature Switzerland, 2026.

On Thurston's Stretch Lines in Teichmüller Space

The Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(Σ)$ of a surface $Σ$ is equipped with Thurston's asymmetric metric. Stretch lines are oriented geodesics for this metric on $\mathcal{T}(Σ)$. We give the asymptotic behavior of the lengths of the measured geodesic laminations as one follows a stretch line in the positive direction.

Hyperbolic geometry in the work of Johann Heinrich Lambert

The memoir Theorie der Parallellinien (1766) by Johann Heinrich Lambert is one of the founding texts of hyperbolic geometry, even though its author's aim was, like many of his pre-decessors', to prove that such a geometry does not exist. In fact, Lambert developed his theory with the hope of finding a contradiction in a geometry where all the Euclidean axioms are kept except the parallel axiom and that the latter is replaced by its negation. In doing so, he obtained several fundamental results of hyperbolic geometry. This was sixty years before the first writings of Lobachevsky and Bolyai appeared in print. In the present paper, we present Lambert's main results and we comment on them. A French translation of the Theorie der Parallellinien, together with an extensive commentary, has just appeared in print (A. Papadopoulos and G. Th{é}ret, La th{é}orie des lignes parall{è}les de Johann Heinrich Lambert. Collection Sciences dans l'Histoire, Librairie Scientifique et Technique Albert Blanchard, Paris, 2014).

Convexity of length functions and Thurston's shear coordinates

We show that the length function of a measured geodesic lamination is convex in Thurston's shear coordinates over Teichmüller space and strictly convex for generic laminations. We give some consequences of this result in the context of Thurston's asymmetric metric on Teichmüller space.

The space of measured foliations of the hexagon

The theory of geometric structures on a surface with nonempty boundary can be developed by using a decomposition of such a surface into hexagons, in the same way as the theory of geometric structures on a surface without boundary is developed using the decomposition of such a surface into pairs of pants. The basic elements of the theory for surfaces with boundary include the study of measured foliations and of hyperbolic structures on hexagons. It turns out that there is an interesting space of measured foliations on a hexagon, which is equipped with a piecewise-linear structure (in fact, a natural cell-decomposition), and this space is a natural boundary for the space of hyperbolic structures with geodesic boundary and right angles on such a hexagon. In this paper, we describe these spaces and the related structures.

On the classification of mapping class actions on Thurston's asymmetric metric

We study the action of the elements of the mapping class group of a surface of finite type on the Teichmüller space of that surface equipped with Thurston's asymmetric metric. We classify such actions as elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic and pseudo-hyperbolic, depending on whether the translation distance of such an element is zero or positive and whether the value of this translation distance is attained or not, and we relate these four types to Thurston's classification of mapping classes. The study is parallel to the one made by Bers in the setting of Teichmüller space equipped with Teichmüller's metric, and to the one made by Daskalopoulos and Wentworth in the setting of Teichmüller space equipped with the Weil-Petersson metric.

Some Lipschitz maps between hyperbolic surfaces with applications to Teichmüller theory

In the Teichmüller space of a hyperbolic surface of finite type, we construct geodesic lines for Thurston's asymmetric metric having the property that when they are traversed in the reverse direction, they are also geodesic lines (up to reparametrization). The lines we construct are special stretch lines in the sense of Thurston. They are directed by complete geodesic laminations that are not chain-recurrent, and they have a nice description in terms of Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. At the basis of the construction are certain maps with controlled Lipschitz constants between right-angled hyperbolic hexagons having three non-consecutive edges of the same size. Using these maps, we obtain Lipschitz-minimizing maps between hyperbolic particular pairs of pants and, more generally, between some hyperbolic sufaces of finite type with arbitrary genus and arbitrary number of boundary components. The Lipschitz-minimizing maps that we contruct are distinct from Thurston's stretch maps.

Shortening all the simple closed geodesics on surfaces with boundary

We give a proof of an unpublished result of Thurston showing that given any hyperbolic metric on a surface of finite type with nonempty boundary, there exists another hyperbolic metric on the same surface for which the lengths of all simple closed geodesics are shorter. (This is not possible for surfaces of finite type with empty boundary.) Furthermore, we show that we can do the shortening in such a way that it is bounded below by a positive constant. This improves a recent result obtained by Parlier in [2]. We include this result in a discussion of the weak metric theory of the Teichmüller space of surfaces with nonempty boundary.

Length spectra and the Teichmueller metric for surfaces with boundary

We consider some metrics and weak metrics defined on the Teichmueller space of a surface of finite type with nonempty boundary, that are defined using the hyperbolic length spectrum of simple closed curves and of properly embedded arcs, and we compare these metrics and weak metrics with the Teichmüller metric. The comparison is on subsets of Teichmüller space which we call "$ε_0$-relative $ε$-thick parts", and whose definition depends on the choice of some positive constants $ε_0$ and $ε$. Meanwhile, we give a formula for the Teichmüller metric of a surface with boundary in terms of extremal lengths of families of arcs.

Divergence et parallélisme des rayons d'étirement cylindriques

A cylindrical stretch line is a stretch line, in the sense of Thurston, whose horocyclic lamination is a weighted multicurve. In this paper, we show that two correctly parameterized cylindrical lines are parallel if and only if these lines converge towards the same point in Thurston's boundary of Teichmüller space.

On length spectrum metrics and weak metrics on Teichmueller spaces of surfaces with boundary

We define and study metrics and weak metrics on the Teichmueller space of a surface of topologically finite type with boundary. These metrics and weak metrics are associated to the hyperbolic length spectrum of simple closed curves and of properly embedded arcs in the surface. We give a comparison between the defined metrics on regions of Teichmueller space which we call $\varepsilon_0$-relative $ε$-thick parts} for $ε>0$ and $\varepsilon_0\geq ε>0$.
