Efroymson's approximation theorem for globally subanalytic functions

Efroymson's approximation theorem asserts that if $f$ is a $\mathcal{C}^0$ semialgebraic mapping on a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ semialgebraic submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and if $\varepsilon:M\to \mathbb{R}$ is a positive continuous semialgebraic function then there is a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ semialgebraic function $g:M\to \mathbb{R}$ such that $|f-g|<\varepsilon$. We prove a generalization of this result to the globally subanalytic category. Our theorem actually holds in a larger framework since it applies to every function which is definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure (expanding the real field) that admits $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ cell decomposition. We also establish approximation theorems for Lipschitz and $\mathcal{C}^1$ definable functions.

A New Large N Expansion for General Matrix-Tensor Models

We define a new large $N$ limit for general $\text{O}(N)^{R}$ or $\text{U}(N)^{R}$ invariant tensor models, based on an enhanced large $N$ scaling of the coupling constants. The resulting large $N$ expansion is organized in terms of a half-integer associated with Feynman graphs that we call the index. This index has a natural interpretation in terms of the many matrix models embedded in the tensor model. Our new scaling can be shown to be optimal for a wide class of non-melonic interactions, which includes all the maximally single-trace terms. Our construction allows to define a new large $D$ expansion of the sum over diagrams of fixed genus in matrix models with an additional $\text{O}(D)^{r}$ global symmetry. When the interaction is the complete vertex of order $R+1$, we identify in detail the leading order graphs for $R$ a prime number. This slightly surprising condition is equivalent to the complete interaction being maximally single-trace.

More on the New Large $D$ Limit of Matrix Models

In this paper, we extend the recent analysis of the new large $D$ limit of matrix models to the cases where the action contains arbitrary multi-trace interaction terms as well as to arbitrary correlation functions. We discuss both the cases of complex and Hermitian matrices, with $\text{U}(N)^{2}\times\text{O}(D)$ and $\text{U}(N)\times\text{O}(D)$ symmetries respectively. In the latter case, the new large $D$ limit is consistent for planar diagrams; at higher genera, it crucially requires the tracelessness condition. For similar reasons, the large $N$ limit of tensor models with reduced symmetries is typically inconsistent already at leading order without the tracelessness condition. We also further discuss some interesting properties of purely bosonic models pointed out recently and explain that the standard argument predicting a non-trivial IR behaviour in fermionic models à la SYK does not work for bosonic models. Finally, we explain that the new large $D$ scaling is consistent with linearly realized supersymmetry.

On the local geometry of definably stratified sets

We prove that a theorem of Pawlucki, showing that Whitney regularity for a subanalytic set with a smooth singular locus of codimension one implies the set is a finite union of differentiable manifolds with boundary, applies to definable sets in polynomially bounded o-minimal structures. We give a refined version of Pawlucki's theorem for arbitrary o-minimal structures, replacing Whitney (b)-regularity by a quantified version, and we prove related results concerning normal cones and continuity of the density. We analyse two counterexamples to the extension of Pawlucki's theorem to definable sets in general o-minimal structures, and to several other statements valid for subanalytic sets. In particular we give the first example of a Whitney (b)-regular definably stratified set for which the density is not continuous along a stratum.

Arc-quasianalytic functions

We work with quasianalytic classes of functions. Consider a real-valued function y = f(x) on an open subset U of Euclidean space, which satisfies a quasianalytic equation G(x, y) = 0. We prove that f is arc-quasianalytic (i.e., its restriction to every quasianalytic arc is quasianalytic) if and only if f becomes quasianalytic after (a locally finite covering of U by) finite sequences of local blowing-ups. This generalizes a theorem of the first two authors on arc-analytic functions.

On a singular variety associated to a polynomial mapping

In the paper "Geometry of polynomial mapping at infinity via intersection homology" the second and third authors associated to a given polynomial mapping $F : \C^2 \to \C^2$ with nonvanishing jacobian a variety whose homology or intersection homology describes the geometry of singularities at infinity of the mapping. We generalize this result.

$L^\infty$ cohomology is intersection cohomology

Let $X$ be any subanalytic compact pseudomanifold. We show a De Rham theorem for $L^\infty$ forms. We prove that the cohomology of $L^\infty$ forms is isomorphic to intersection cohomology in the maximal perversity.

$L^1$ cohomology of bounded subanalytic manifolds

We prove some de Rham theorems on bounded subanalytic submanifolds of $\R^n$ (not necessarily compact). We show that the $L^1$ cohomology of such a submanifold is isomorphic to its singular homology. In the case where the closure of the underlying manifold has only isolated singularities this implies that the $L^1$ cohomology is Poincaré dual to $L^\infty$ cohomology (in dimension $j <m-1$). In general, Poincaré duality is related to the so-called $L^1$ Stokes' Property. For oriented manifolds, we show that the $L^1$ Stokes' property holds if and only if integration realizes a nondegenerate pairing between $L^1$ and $L^\infty$ forms. This is the counterpart of a theorem proved by Cheeger on $L^2$ forms.

Vanishing homology

In this paper we introduce a new homology theory devoted to the study of families such as semi-algebraic or subanalytic families and in general to any family definable in an o-minimal structure (such as Denjoy-Carleman definable or $ln-exp$ definable sets). The idea is to study the cycles which are vanishing when we approach a special fiber. This also enables us to derive local metric invariants for germs of definable sets. We prove that the homology groups are finitely generated.
