The QCD beta-function from global solutions to Dyson-Schwinger equations

We study quantum chromodynamics from the viewpoint of untruncated Dyson-Schwinger equations turned to an ordinary differential equation for the gluon anomalous dimension. This nonlinear equation is parameterized by a function P(x) which is unknown beyond perturbation theory. Still, very mild assumptions on P(x) lead to stringent restrictions for possible solutions to Dyson-Schwinger equations. We establish that the theory must have asymptotic freedom beyond perturbation theory and also investigate the low energy regime and the possibility for a mass gap in the asymptotically free theory.

The QED beta-function from global solutions to Dyson-Schwinger equations

We discuss the structure of beta functions as determined by the recursive nature of Dyson--Schwinger equations turned into an analysis of ordinary differential equations, with particular emphasis given to quantum electrodynamics. In particular we determine when a separatrix for solutions to such ODEs exists and clarify the existence of Landau poles beyond perturbation theory. Both are determined in terms of explicit conditions on the asymptotics for the growth of skeleton graphs.

Non-Vanishing Profiles for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation on the Infinite Line

We study the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation on the infinite line with initial conditions having arbitrarily large limits $\pm Y$ at $x=\pm\infty$. We show that the solutions have the same limits for all positive times. This implies that an attractor for this equation cannot be defined in $L^\infty$. To prove this, we consider profiles with limits at $x=\pm\infty$, and show that initial conditions $L^2$-close to such profiles lead to solutions which remain $L^2$-close to the profile for all times. Furthermore, the difference between these solutions and the initial profile tends to 0 as $x\to\pm\infty$, for any fixed time $t>0$. Analogous results hold for $L^2$-neighborhoods of periodic stationary solutions. This implies that profiles and periodic stationary solutions partition the phase space into mutually unattainable regions.

Phase turbulence in the Complex Ginzburg--Landau equation via Kuramoto--Sivashinsky phase dynamics

We study the Complex Ginzburg--Landau initial value problem $\partial_t u=(1+iα) \partial_x^2 u + u - (1+iβ) u |u|^2$, $u(x,0)=u_0(x)$ for a complex field $u\in{\bf C}$, with $α,β\in{\bf R}$. We consider the Benjamin--Feir linear instability region $1+αβ=-ε^2$ with $ε\ll1$ and $α^2<1/2$. We show that for all $ε\leq{\cal O}(\sqrt{1-2α^2} L_0^{-32/37})$, and for all initial data $u_0$ sufficiently close to 1 (up to a global phase factor $\ed^{i ϕ_0}, ϕ_0\in{\bf R}$) in the appropriate space, there exists a unique (spatially) periodic solution of space period $L_0$. These solutions are small {\em even} perturbations of the traveling wave solution, $u=(1+α^2 s) \ed^{i ϕ_0-iβt} \ed^{iαη}$, and $s,η$ have bounded norms in various $Ł^p$ and Sobolev spaces. We prove that $s\approx-{1/2} η''$ apart from ${\cal O}(ε^2)$ corrections whenever the initial data satisfy this condition, and that in the linear instability range $L_0^{-1}\leqε\leq{\cal O}(L_0^{-32/37})$, the dynamics is essentially determined by the motion of the phase alone, and so exhibits `phase turbulence'. Indeed, we prove that the phase $η$ satisfies the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation $\partial_tη= -\bigl({\textstyle\frac{1+α^2}{2}}\bigr) \triangle^2η-ε^2\triangleη-{(1+α^2)} (η')^2$ for times $t_0\leq{\cal O}(ε^{-52/5} L_0^{-32/5})$, while the amplitude $1+α^2 s$ is essentially constant.

Asymptotics of solutions in nA+nB->C reaction Diffusion systems

We analyze the long time behavior of initial value problems that model a process where particles of type A and B diffuse in some substratum and react according to $nA+nB\to C$. The case n=1 has been studied before; it presents nontrivial behavior on the reactive scale only. In this paper we discuss in detail the cases $n>3$, and prove that they show nontrivial behavior on the reactive and the diffusive length scale.
