Emergent Strings from Quantum Field Theory

We develop a procedure that reorganizes the perturbative expansion in a class of quantum field theories into a stringy amplitude expressed as a sum over two-dimensional geometries. Using Schwinger parametrization and the one-to-one correspondence between metric ribboned graphs and the moduli space of Riemann surfaces established via Strebel differentials, we map each Feynman diagram to a surface. We then construct a conformal field theory on the worldsheet whose correlation functions encode the full set of QFT Feynman rules directly from the geometry of the associated Riemann surface. Restoring diffeomorphism and Weyl invariance promotes the integral over moduli space to a path integral over worldsheet metrics, yielding a non-critical string theory whose Liouville mode naturally becomes a holographic direction. By construction, the expansion of the string theory amplitudes in the number of boundary state insertions matches the loop expansion in the QFT at fixed genus. Moreover, loop divergences are shown to match standard string-theoretic degeneration limits, indicating that gravitational backreaction is equivalent to QFT renormalization. Our construction provides a microscopic route from generic QFTs to emergent string theories and offers a framework for deriving holographic duals directly from field-theoretic data.

Mutual information from modular flow in CFTs

The operator product expansion (OPE) of twist operators in the replica trick framework enables a long-distance expansion of the mutual information (MI) in conformal field theories (CFTs). In this expansion, the terms are labeled by primary operators, as contributions from descendant operators can be resummed into conformal blocks. However, for the MI, the expansion involves primaries from the multi-replica theory, which includes far more operators than those in the original theory. In this work, we develop a method to resum this series, yielding an expansion in terms of the primaries of the original theory, specifically restricted to the two-copy sector. This is achieved by expressing the twist operators in a non-local manner across different replicas and using a modular flow representation to obtain the n -> 1 limit of the Rényi index. We explicitly compute the resulting "enhanced conformal blocks", which, surprisingly, provide excellent approximations to the MI of generalized free fields across the full range of cross ratios. Remarkably, this approximation appears to be exact in the limit of large spacetime dimensions.

Perturbing a quantum black hole

We analyze the analytic structure of correlators in the field theory dual to the quantum Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (qBTZ) black hole, a braneworld model incorporating exact backreaction from quantum conformal matter. We first compute the quasi-normal mode (QNM) spectrum of operators with dimension $Δ$ and spin $s=0,\pm 1/2$. The leading QNMs and their overtones display qualitatively different behavior depending on the branch of qBTZ solution, which corresponds to distinct CFT states: branch 1 is a conical singularity dressed with a horizon while branch 2 is a quantum-corrected BTZ black hole. Consequently, the relaxation of probe matter effectively differentiates the CFT states and identifies the corresponding bulk descriptions. We then turn to pole-skipping locations where Green's functions are not unique. At these points, frequency is proportional to temperature, but momentum exhibits complex temperature dependence due to quantum effects. Under the assumption that the pole-skipping point closest to the origin reflects quantum chaos, we infer the likely behavior of the quantum Lyapunov exponent and butterfly velocity in the dual theory. Finally, we examine pole collisions in complex momentum space, showing that quantum corrections imprint a unique signature on the analytic structure of the poles in retarded Green's functions, resulting in level-crossing phenomena that differ notably from the level-touching phenomena in the uncorrected BTZ geometry.

Aspects of Entanglement Entropy in $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

We investigate entanglement entropy in $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories from two different perspectives. We first confirm that the dependence of supersymmetric entanglement entropy (as defined in arXiv:1306.2958) on the entangling region is purely topological. We then compute entanglement entropy of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal gauge theories at arbitrary Yang-Mills coupling using the heat kernel method. This reveals a particular divergence originating in charge fluctuations in the vacuum, hence carrying information about internal symmetries of the theory. This computation leads to universal contributions to entanglement entropy from chiral and vector multiplets for unitary gauge groups of arbitrary rank, and has the advantage that the integral over the gauge moduli is simple to compute.

Worldsheet from worldline

We take a step toward a "microscopic" derivation of gauge-string duality. In particular, using mathematical techniques of Strebel differentials and discrete exterior calculus, we obtain a bosonic string worldsheet action for a string embedded in d+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS space from multi-loop Feynman graphs of a quantum field theory of scalar matrices in d-dimensions in the limit of diverging loop number. Our work is building on the program started by 't Hooft in 1974, this time including the holographic dimension which we show to emerge from the continuum of Schwinger parameters of Feynman diagrams.

Holographic entanglement as nonlocal magnetism

The Ryu-Takayanagi prescription can be cast in terms of a set of microscopic threads that help visualize holographic entanglement in terms of distillation of EPR pairs. While this framework has been exploited for regions with a high degree of symmetry, we take the first steps towards understanding general entangling regions, focusing on AdS$_4$. Inspired by simple constructions achieved for the case of disks and the half-plane, we reformulate bit threads in terms of a magnetic-like field generated by a current flowing through the boundary of the entangling region. The construction is possible for these highly symmetric settings, leading us to a modified Biot-Savart law in curved space that fully characterizes the entanglement structure of the state. For general entangling regions, the prescription breaks down as the corresponding modular Hamiltonians become inherently nonlocal. We develop a formalism for general shape deformations and derive a flow equation that accounts for these effects as a systematic expansion. We solve this equation for a complete set of small deformations and show that the structure of the expansion explicitly codifies the expected nonlocalities. Our findings are consistent with numerical results existing in the literature, and shed light on the fundamental nature of quantum entanglement as a nonlocal phenomenon.
