Dust, gas activity and morphology of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks at heliocentric distances beyond 1.1 au

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is a periodic comet with an orbital period of approximately 71 years. Because of the period duration, aphelion of 35.3 au, and highly inclined orbit (74.2 deg), it is classified as a Halley-type comet. In this work, we present the results of the analysis of photometric and spectral observations of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks while it was at a heliocentric distance beyond 1.1 au, before perihelion passage. Quasisynchronous observations were carried out from July 2023 to March 2024 using 0.61-m and 1.3-m telescopes at the Skalnaté Pleso Observatory, 1-m telescope Zeiss-1000 Sanglokh International Astronomical Observatory, and 0.7-m telescope AZT8 at the observation station of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Photometric observations were conducted using B, V, and R filters of the Johnson-Cousins and Bessel photometric systems. We completed our data collection with broadband photometric and spectral observations on the 2-m HCT telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory. During this period, the dust coma morphology and photometric data measured in the R filter, such as the apparent, absolute magnitudes and dust activity level, indicate several repeated outbursts in brightness and dust activity occurred around July 22, September 25, October 17-23, and a significant outburst was recorded on November 1-7. We detected strong gas emission features in the cometary spectrum belonging to CN, C2, and C3 molecules. Furthermore, gas production rates of these molecules were estimated using Haser's model. A comparison of dust activity level and CN gas production rate shows that dust activity increased significantly as the comet approached the Sun, while gas activity exhibited more moderate changes.

2021 superoutburst of WZ Sge-type dwarf nova V627 Pegasi lacks an early superhump phase

Superoutbursts in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae (DNe) are characterized by both early superhumps and ordinary superhumps originating from the 2:1 and 3:1 resonances, respectively. However, some WZ Sge-type DNe show a superoutburst lacking early superhumps; it is not well established how these differ from superoutbursts with an early superhump phase. We report time-resolved photometric observations of the WZ Sge-type DN V627 Peg during its 2021 superoutburst. The detection of ordinary superhumps before the superoutburst peak highlights that this 2021 superoutburst of V627 Peg, like that {in} 2014, did not feature an early superhump phase. The duration of stage B superhumps was slightly longer in the 2010 superoutburst accompanying early superhumps than that in the 2014 and 2021 superoutbursts which lacked early superhumps. This result suggests that an accretion disk experiencing the 2:1 resonance may have a larger mass at the inner part of the disk and hence take more time for the inner disk to become eccentric. The presence of a precursor outburst in the 2021 superoutburst suggests that the maximum disk radius should be smaller than that of the 2014 superoutburst, even though the duration of quiescence was longer than that before the 2021 superoutburst. This could be accomplished if the 2021 superoutburst was triggered as an inside-out outburst or if the mass transfer rate in quiescence changes by a factor of two, suggesting that the outburst mechanism and quiescence state of WZ Sge-type DNe may have more variety than ever thought.

Some physical properties of a new Jupiter-family comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) from broadband observations

New periodic comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) located on unstable quasi-Trojan orbit still an interesting object to study in the last years. We present the results of broadband observations of comet P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) performed at the Sanglokh observatory of the Institute of Astrophysics, National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan for 5 nights in August 2020. The dependence of the Afrho parameters of the comet on the aperture radius is measured. We obtained the coma corrected upper limit of the cometary radius Rn not more than 6.1 +- 0.1 km and calculated the absolute magnitude H0 = 11.41 +- 0.03. Finson - Probstein diagram method was used to explain a dust tail appearance. A subgroup of comets with orbital parameters close to P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) is analyzed.
