Numerical study of a nonlocal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (MMT model)

In this paper, we study a nonlocal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (MMT model). We investigate the effect of the nonlocal operator appearing in the nonlinearity on the long-term behavior of solutions, and we identify the conditions under which the solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with this equation is bounded globally in time in the energy space. We also explore the dynamical behavior of standing wave solutions. Therefore, we first numerically generate standing wave solutions of nonlocal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation by using the Petviashvili's iteration method and their stability is investigated by the split-step Fourier method. This equation also has a two-parameter family of standing wave solutions. In a second step, we meticulously concern with the construction and stability of a two-parameter family of standing wave solutions numerically. Finally, we investigate the semi-classical limit of the nonlocal nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in both focusing and defocusing cases.

Long time behavior of solutions to the generalized Boussinesq equation

In this paper, we study the generalized Boussinesq equation as a model for the water wave problem with surface tension. Initially, we investigate the initial value problem within Sobolev spaces, deriving conditions under which solutions are either global or experience blow-up in time. Subsequently, we extend our analysis to Bessel potential and modulation spaces, determining the asymptotic behavior of solutions. We establish the non-existence of solitary waves for certain parameters using Pohozaev-type identities. Additionally, we numerically generate solitary wave solutions of the generalized Boussinesq equation through the Petviashvili iteration method. To further examine the time evolution of solutions, we propose employing the Fourier pseudo-spectral numerical method. Our investigation extends to the gap interval, where neither global existence nor blow-up results have been theoretically established. We find that our numerical results effectively fill these gaps, supplementing the theoretical findings.

On the orbital stability of solitary waves for the fourth order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation

In this paper, we present new results regarding the orbital stability of solitary standing waves for the general fourth-order Schr\"odinger equation with mixed dispersion. The existence of solitary waves can be determined both as minimizers of a constrained complex functional and by using a numerical approach. In addition, for specific values of the frequency associated with the standing wave, one obtains explicit solutions with a hyperbolic secant profile. Despite these explicit solutions being minimizers of the constrained functional, they cannot be seen as a smooth curve of solitary waves, and this fact prevents their determination of stability using classical approaches in the current literature. To overcome this difficulty, we employ a numerical approach to construct a smooth curve of solitary waves. The existence of a smooth curve is useful for showing the existence of a threshold power $\alpha_0\approx 4.8$ of the nonlinear term such that if $\alpha\in (0,\alpha_0),$ the explicit solitary wave is stable, and if $\alpha>\alpha_0$, the wave is unstable. An important feature of our work, caused by the presence of the mixed dispersion term, concerns the fact that the threshold value $\alpha_0 \approx 4.8$ is not the same as that established for proving the existence of global solutions in the energy space, as is well known for the classical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation.

On the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with double-power nonlinearities

In this paper, we delve into the study of the generalized KP equation, which incorporates double-power nonlinearities. Our investigation covers various aspects, including the existence of solitary waves, their nonlinear stability, and instability. Notably, we address a broader class of nonlinearities represented by $μ_1|u|^{p_1-1}u+μ_2|u|^{p_2-1}u$, with $p_1>p_2$, encompassing cases where $μ_1>0$ and $μ_1<0<μ_2$. One of the distinct features of our work is the absence of scaling, which introduces several challenges in establishing the existence of ground states. To overcome these challenges, we employ two different minimization problems, offering novel approaches to address this issue. Furthermore, our study includes a nuanced analysis to ascertain the stability of these ground states. Intriguingly, we extend our stability analysis to encompass cases where the convexity of the Lyapunov function is not guaranteed. This expansion of stability criteria represents a significant contribution to the field. Moving beyond the analysis of solitary waves, we shift our focus to the associated Cauchy problem. Here, we derive criteria that determine whether solutions exhibit finite-time blow-up or remain uniformly bounded within the energy space. Remarkably, our study unveils a notable gap in the existing literature, characterized by the absence of both theoretical evidence of blow-up and uniform boundedness. To explore this intriguing scenario, we employ the integrating factor method, providing a numerical investigation of solution behavior. This method distinguishes itself by offering spectral-order accuracy in space and fourth-order accuracy in time. Lastly, we rigorously establish the strong instability of the ground states, adding another layer of understanding to the complex dynamics inherent in the generalized KP equation.

Stability of Periodic Waves for the Defocusing Fractional Cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

In this paper, we determine the spectral instability of periodic odd waves for the defocusing fractional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our approach is based on periodic perturbations that have the same period as the standing wave solution, and we construct real periodic waves by minimizing a suitable constrained problem. The odd solution generates three negative simple eigenvalues for the associated linearized operator, and we obtain all this spectral information by using tools related to the oscillation theorem for fractional Hill operators. Newton's iteration method is presented to generate the odd periodic standing wave solutions and numerical results have been used to apply the spectral stability theory via Krein signature as established in [22] and [23].

On the Rosenau equation: Lie symmetries, periodic solutions and solitary wave dynamics

In this paper, we first consider the Rosenau equation with the quadratic nonlinearity and identify its Lie symmetry algebra. We obtain reductions of the equation to ODEs, and find periodic analytical solutions in terms of elliptic functions. Then, considering a general power-type nonlinearity, we prove the non-existence of solitary waves for some parameters using Pohozaev type identities. The Fourier pseudo-spectral method is proposed for the Rosenau equation with this single power type nonlinearity. In order to investigate the solitary wave dynamics, we generate the solitary wave profile as an initial condition by using the Petviashvili's method. Then the evolution of the single solitary wave and overtaking collision of solitary waves are investigated by various numerical experiments.

Orbital stability of periodic standing waves for the cubic fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this paper, the existence and orbital stability of the periodic standing waves solutions for the nonlinear fractional Schrodinger (fNLS) equation with cubic nonlinearity is studied. The existence is determined by using a minimizing constrained problem in the complex setting and we it is showed that the corresponding real solution is always positive. The orbital stability is proved by combining some tools regarding positive operators, the oscillation theorem for fractional Hill operators and a Vakhitov-Kolokolov condition, well known for Schrodinger equations. We then perform a numerical approach to generate periodic standing wave solutions of the fNLS equation by using the Petviashvili's iteration method. We also investigate the Vakhitov-Kolokolov condition numerically which cannot be obtained analytically for some values of the order of the fractional derivative.

On the Stability of Solitary Wave Solutions for a Generalized Fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation

In this paper we establish a rigorous spectral stability analysis for solitary waves associated to a generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type equation. Besides the well known smooth and positive solitary wave with large wave speed, we present the existence of smooth negative solitary waves having small wave speed. The spectral stability is then determined by analysing the behaviour of the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum at the solitary wave. Since the analytical solution is not known, we generate the negative solitary waves numerically by using Petviashvili method. We also present some numerical experiments to observe the stability properties of solitary waves for various values of the order of nonlinearity and fractional derivative. Some remarks concerning the orbital stability are also celebrated.

On the existence, uniqueness and stability of Periodic Waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation

The existence, uniqueness and stability of periodic traveling waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation is considered. In our approach, we give sufficient conditions to prove a uniqueness result for the single-lobe solution obtained by a constrained minimization problem. The spectral stability is then shown by determining that the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum and mass at the periodic wave has no negative eigenvalues. We propose the Petviashvili's method to investigate the spectral stability of the periodic waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation, numerically. Some remarks concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves are also presented.

The Generalized Fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation: Analytical and Numerical Results

The generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (gfBBM) equation models the propagation of small amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. The equation involves two fractional terms unlike the well-known fBBM equation. In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the Cauchy problem. The sufficient conditions for the existence of solitary wave solutions are obtained. The Petviashvili method is proposed for the generation of the solitary wave solutions and their evolution in time is investigated numerically by Fourier spectral method. The efficiency of the numerical methods is tested and the relation between nonlinearity and fractional dispersion is observed by various numerical experiments.

Numerical solution for a general class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations

A class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equation arises from the modeling of a one dimensional motion in a nonlinearly, nonlocally elastic medium. The equation involves a kernel function with nonnegative Fourier transform. We discretize the equation by using Fourier spectral method in space and we prove the convergence of the semidiscrete scheme. We then use a fully-discrete scheme, that couples Fourier pseudo-spectral method in space and 4th order Runge-Kutta in time, to observe the effect of the kernel function on solutions. To generate solitary wave solutions numerically, we use the Petviashvili's iteration method.

Higher order dispersive effects in regularized Boussinesq equation

In this paper, we consider the higher order Boussinesq (HBq) equation which models the bi-directional propagation of longitudinal waves in various continuous media. The equation contains the higher order effects of frequency dispersion. The present study is devoted to the numerical investigation of the HBq equation. For this aim a numerical scheme combining the Fourier pseudo-spectral method in space and a Runge Kutta method in time is constructed. The convergence of semi-discrete scheme is proved in an appropriate Sobolev space. To investigate the higher order dispersive effects and nonlinear effects on the solutions of HBq equation, propagation of single solitary wave, head-on collision of solitary waves and blow-up solutions are considered.
