Diffusion of a hydrocarbon mixture in a one-dimensional zeolite channel: an exclusion model approach

Zeolite channels can be used as effective hydrocarbon traps. Earlier experiments (Czaplewski {\sl et al.}, 2002) show that the presence of large aromatic molecules (toluene) block the diffusion of light hydrocarbon molecules (propane) inside the narrow pore of a zeolite sample. As a result, the desorption temperature of propane is significantly higher in the binary mixture than in the single component case. In order to obtain further insight into these results, we use a simple lattice gas model of diffusion of hard-core particles to describe the diffusive transport of two species of molecules in a one-dimensional zeolite channel. Our dynamical Monte Carlo simulations show that taking into account an Arrhenius dependence of the single molecule diffusion coefficient on temperature, one can explain many significant features of the temperature programmed desorption profile observed in experiments. However, on a closer comparison of the experimental curve and our simulation data, we find that it is not possible to reproduce the higher propane current than toluene current near the desorption peak seen in experiment. We argue that this is caused by a violation of strict single-file behavior.

Instability of condensation in the zero-range process with random interaction

The zero-range process is a stochastic interacting particle system that is known to exhibit a condensation transition. We present a detailed analysis of this transition in the presence of quenched disorder in the particle interactions. Using rigorous probabilistic arguments we show that disorder changes the critical exponent in the interaction strength below which a condensation transition may occur. The local critical densities may exhibit large fluctuations and their distribution shows an interesting crossover from exponential to algebraic behaviour.

Exact solution of a stochastic SIR model

The susceptible-infectious-recovered (SIR) model describes the evolution of three species of individuals which are subject to an infection and recovery mechanism. A susceptible $S$ can become infectious with an infection rate $β$ by an infectious $I$- type provided that both are in contact. The $I$- type may recover with a rate $γ$ and from then on stay immune. Due to the coupling between the different individuals, the model is nonlinear and out of equilibrium. We adopt a stochastic individual-based description where individuals are represented by nodes of a graph and contact is defined by the links of the graph. Mapping the underlying Master equation into a quantum formulation in terms of spin operators, the hierarchy of evolution equations can be solved exactly for arbitrary initial conditions on a linear chain. In case of uncorrelated random initial conditions the exact time evolution for all three individuals of the SIR model is given analytically. Depending on the initial conditions and reaction rates $β$ and $γ$, the $I$-population may increase initially before decaying to zero. Due to fluctuations, isolated regions of susceptible individuals evolve and unlike in the standard mean-field SIR model one observes a finite stationary distribution of the $S$-type even for large population size. The exact results for the ensemble averaged population size are compared with simulations for single realizations of the process and also with standard mean field theory which is expected to be valid on large fully-connected graphs.

Nonequilibrium field-induced phase separation in single-file diffusion

Using an analytically tractable lattice model for reaction-diffusion processes of hard-core particles we demonstrate that under nonequilibrium conditions phase coexistence may arise even if the system is effectively one-dimensional as e.g. in the channel system of some zeolites or in artificial optical lattices. In our model involving two species of particles a steady-state particle current is maintained by a density gradient between the channel boundaries and by the influence of an external driving force. This leads to the development of a fluctuating but always microscopically sharp interface between two domains of different densities which are fixed by the boundary chemical potentials. The internal structure of the interface becomes very simple for strong driving force. We calculate the drift velocity and diffusion coefficient of the interface in terms of the microscopic model parameters.

Shocks in the asymmetric exclusion process with internal degree of freedom

We determine all families of Markovian three-states lattice gases with pair interaction and a single local conservation law. One such family of models is an asymmetric exclusion process where particles exist in two different nonconserved states. We derive conditions on the transition rates between the two states such that the shock has a particularly simple structure with minimal intrinsic shock width and random walk dynamics. We calculate the drift velocity and diffusion coefficient of the shock.

Elephants can always remember: Exact long-range memory effects in a non-Markovian random walk

We consider a discrete-time random walk where the random increment at time step $t$ depends on the full history of the process. We calculate exactly the mean and variance of the position and discuss its dependence on the initial condition and on the memory parameter $p$. At a critical value $p_c^{(1)}=1/2$ where memory effects vanish there is a transition from a weakly localized regime (where the walker returns to its starting point) to an escape regime. Inside the escape regime there is a second critical value where the random walk becomes superdiffusive. The probability distribution is shown to be governed by a non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation with hopping rates that depend both on time and on the starting position of the walk. On large scales the memory organizes itself into an effective harmonic oscillator potential for the random walker with a time-dependent spring constant $k = (2p-1)/t$. The solution of this problem is a Gaussian distribution with time-dependent mean and variance which both depend on the initiation of the process.

On the universality of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio in non-equilibrium critical dynamics

The two-time nonequilibrium correlation and response functions in 1D kinetic classical spin systems with non-conserved dynamics and quenched to their zero-temperature critical point are studied. The exact solution of the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics for a wide class of initial states allows for an explicit test of the universality of the non-equilibrium limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio X_{\infty}. It is shown that the value of X_{\infty} depends on whether the initial state has finitely many domain walls or not and thus two distinct dynamic universality classes can be identified in this model. Generic 1D kinetic spin systems with non-conserved dynamics fall into the same universality classes as the kinetic Glauber-Ising model provided the dynamics is invariant under the C-symmetry of simultaneous spin and magnetic-field reversal. While C-symmetry is satisfied for magnetic systems, it need not be for lattice gases which may therefore display hitherto unexplored types of non-universal kinetics.

Critical phenomena and universal dynamics in one-dimensional driven diffusive systems with two species of particles

Recent work on stochastic interacting particle systems with two particle species (or single-species systems with kinematic constraints) has demonstrated the existence of spontaneous symmetry breaking, long-range order and phase coexistence in nonequilibrium steady states, even if translational invariance is not broken by defects or open boundaries. If both particle species are conserved, the temporal behaviour is largely unexplored, but first results of current work on the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic scale yield exact coupled nonlinear hydrodynamic equations and indicate the emergence of novel types of shock waves which are collective excitations stabilized by the flow of microscopic fluctuations. We review the basic stationary and dynamic properties of these systems, highlighting the role of conservation laws and kinetic constraints for the hydrodynamic behaviour, the microscopic origin of domain wall (shock) stability and the coarsening dynamics of domains during phase separation.

Dynamic Matrix Ansatz for Integrable Reaction-Diffusion Processes

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Generalizing earlier work \cite{Stin95a,Stin95b} we present an alternative description of these processes in terms of a time-dependent operator algebra with quadratic relations. These relations generate the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum and turn the calculation of time-dependent expectation values into the problem of either finding representations of this algebra or of solving functional equations for the initial values of the operators. We use both strategies for the study of two specific models: (i) We construct a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. In this way we obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal, symmetry-breaking boundary fields. (ii) We consider the non-equilibrium spin relaxation of Ising spins with zero-temperature Glauber dynamics and an additional coupling to an infinite-temperature heat bath with Kawasaki dynamics. We solve the functional equations arising from the algebraic description and show non-perturbatively on the level of all finite-order correlation functions that the coupling to the infinite-temperature heat bath does not change the late-time behaviour of the zero-temperature process. The associated quantum chain is a non-hermitian anisotropic Heisenberg chain related to the seven-vertex model.

Exact Solution of the Master Equation for the Asymmetric Exclusion Process

Using the Bethe ansatz, we obtain the exact solution of the master equation for the totally asymmetric exclusion process on an infinite one-dimensional lattice. We derive explicit expressions for the conditional probabilities P(x_1, ... ,x_N;t|y_1, ... ,y_N;0) of finding N particles on lattice sites x_1, ... ,x_N at time t with initial occupation y_1, ... ,y_N at time t=0.

An exactly solvable lattice model for inhomogeneous interface growth

We study the dynamics of an exactly solvable lattice model for inhomogeneous interface growth. The interface grows deterministically with constant velocity except along a defect line where the growth process is random. We obtain exact expressions for the average height and height fluctuations as functions of space and time for an initially flat interface. For a given defect strength there is a critical angle between the defect line and the growth direction above which a cusp in the interface develops. In the mapping to polymers in random media this is an example for the transverse Meissner effect. Fluctuations around the mean shape of the interface are Gaussian.

Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Processes, Operator Algebras and Integrable Quantum Spin Chains

We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Using the Bethe ansatz and similarity transformations this yields new exact results. In a complementary approach we generalize previous work and present a new description of these and other processes and the related quantum chains in terms of an operator algebra with quadratic relations. The full solution of the master equation of the process is thus turned into the problem of finding representations of this algebra. We find a two-dimensional time-dependent representation of the algebra for the symmetric exclusion process with open boundary conditions. We obtain new results on the dynamics of this system and on the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the corresponding quantum spin chain, which is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with non-diagonal boundary fields.

Experimental Realizations of Integrable Reaction-Diffusion Processes in Biological and Chemical Systems

Stochastic reaction-diffusion processes may be presented in terms of integrable quantum chains and can be used to describe various biological and chemical systems. Exploiting the integrability of the models one finds in some cases good agreement between experimental and exact theoretical data. This is shown for the Rubinstein-Duke model for gel-electrophoresis of DNA, the asymmetric exclusion process as a model for the kinetics of biopolymerization and the coagulation-diffusion model for exciton dynamics on TMMC chains.

EQUIVALENCES BETWEEN STOCHASTIC SYSTEMS

Time-dependent correlation functions of (unstable) particles undergoing biased or unbiased diffusion, coagulation and annihilation are calculated. This is achieved by similarity transformations between different stochastic models and between stochastic and soluble {\em non-stochastic} models. The results agree with experiments on one-dimensional annihilation-coagulation processes.

Diffusion-Annihilation in the Presence of a Driving Field

We study the effect of an external driving force on a simple stochastic reaction-diffusion system in one dimension. In our model each lattice site may be occupied by at most one particle. These particles hop with rates $(1\pmη)/2$ to the right and left nearest neighbouring site resp. if this site is vacant and annihilate with rate 1 if it is occupied. We show that density fluctuations (i.e. the $m^{th}$ moments $\langle N^m \rangle$ of the density distribution at time $t$) do not depend on the spatial anisotropy $η$ induced by the driving field, irrespective of the initial condition. Furthermore we show that if one takes certain translationally invariant averages over initial states (e.g. random initial conditions) even local fluctuations do not depend on $η$. In the scaling regime $t \sim L^2$ the effect of the driving can be completely absorbed in a Galilei transformation (for any initial condition). We compute the probability of finding a system of $L$ sites in its stationary state at time $t$ if it was fully occupied at time $t_0 = 0$.

Reaction-Diffusion Processes of Hard-Core Particles

We study a 12-parameter stochastic process involving particles with two-site interaction and hard-core repulsion on a $d$-dimensional lattice. In this model, which includes the asymmetric exclusion process, contact processes and other processes, the stochastic variables are particle occupation numbers taking values $n_{\vec{x}}=0,1$. We show that on a 10-parameter submanifold the $k$-point equal-time correlation functions $\exval{n_{\vec{x}_1} \cdots n_{\vec{x}_k}}$ satisfy linear differential- difference equations involving no higher correlators. In particular, the average density $\exval{n_{\vec{x}}} $ satisfies an integrable diffusion-type equation. These properties are explained in terms of dual processes and various duality relations are derived. By defining the time evolution of the stochastic process in terms of a quantum Hamiltonian $H$, the model becomes equivalent to a lattice model in thermal equilibrium in $d+1$ dimensions. We show that the spectrum of $H$ is identical to the spectrum of the quantum Hamiltonian of a $d$-dimensional, anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. In one dimension our results hint at some new algebraic structure behind the integrability of the system.
