High-resolution transmission spectroscopy of ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33b with NEID

We report an attempt to detect molecular and atomic species in the atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33b using the high-resolution echelle spectrograph NEID with a wavelength coverage of 380$-$930 nm. By analyzing the transmission spectrum of WASP-33b using the line-by-line technique and the cross-correlation technique, we confirm previous detection of H$α$, H$β$, H$γ$, and Ca II infrared triplets. We find no evidence for a significant day-to-night wind in WASP-33b, taking into account the effects of stellar pulsations using a relatively novel GP method and poorly constrained systemic velocity measurements. We also detect the previously reported pre-transit absorption signal, which may be a pulsation mode induced by the planet. Combined with previous CARMENES and HARPS-N observations, we report the non-detection of TiO, Ti I, and V I in the transmission spectrum, while they were already detected in the dayside atmosphere of WASP-33b. This implies a difference in the chemical compositions and abundances between the dayside and terminator atmospheres of WASP-33b, and certainly requires further improvements in the sensitivity of the detection methods.

NP-RDMA: Using Commodity RDMA without Pinning Memory

Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) has been haunted by the need of pinning down memory regions. Pinning limits the memory utilization because it impedes on-demand paging and swapping. It also increases the initialization latency of large memory applications from seconds to minutes. To remove memory pining, existing approaches often require special hardware which supports page fault, and still have inferior performance. We propose NP-RDMA, which removes memory pinning during memory registration and enables dynamic page fault handling with commodity RDMA NICs. NP-RDMA does not require NICs to support page fault. Instead, by monitoring local memory paging and swapping with MMU-notifier, combining with IOMMU/SMMU-based address mapping, NP-RDMA efficiently detects and handles page fault in the software with near-zero additional latency to non-page-fault RDMA verbs. We implement an LD_PRELOAD library (with a modified kernel module), which is fully compatible with existing RDMA applications. Experiments show that NP-RDMA adds only 0.1{\sim}2 μs latency under non-page-fault scenarios. Moreover, NP-RDMA adds only 3.5{\sim}5.7 μs and 60 μs under minor or major page faults, respectively, which is 500x faster than ODP which uses advanced NICs that support page fault. With non-pinned memory, Spark initialization is 20x faster and the physical memory usage reduces by 86% with only 5.4% slowdown. Enterprise storage can expand to 5x capacity with SSDs while the average latency is only 10% higher. To the best of our knowledge, NP-RDMA is the first efficient and application-transparent software approach to remove memory pinning using commodity RDMA NICs.

The development of HISPEC for Keck and MODHIS for TMT: science cases and predicted sensitivities

HISPEC is a new, high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph being designed for the W.M. Keck II telescope. By offering single-shot, R=100,000 between 0.98 - 2.5 um, HISPEC will enable spectroscopy of transiting and non-transiting exoplanets in close orbits, direct high-contrast detection and spectroscopy of spatially separated substellar companions, and exoplanet dynamical mass and orbit measurements using precision radial velocity monitoring calibrated with a suite of state-of-the-art absolute and relative wavelength references. MODHIS is the counterpart to HISPEC for the Thirty Meter Telescope and is being developed in parallel with similar scientific goals. In this proceeding, we provide a brief overview of the current design of both instruments, and the requirements for the two spectrographs as guided by the scientific goals for each. We then outline the current science case for HISPEC and MODHIS, with focuses on the science enabled for exoplanet discovery and characterization. We also provide updated sensitivity curves for both instruments, in terms of both signal-to-noise ratio and predicted radial velocity precision.

Memory-and-Anticipation Transformer for Online Action Understanding

Most existing forecasting systems are memory-based methods, which attempt to mimic human forecasting ability by employing various memory mechanisms and have progressed in temporal modeling for memory dependency. Nevertheless, an obvious weakness of this paradigm is that it can only model limited historical dependence and can not transcend the past. In this paper, we rethink the temporal dependence of event evolution and propose a novel memory-anticipation-based paradigm to model an entire temporal structure, including the past, present, and future. Based on this idea, we present Memory-and-Anticipation Transformer (MAT), a memory-anticipation-based approach, to address the online action detection and anticipation tasks. In addition, owing to the inherent superiority of MAT, it can process online action detection and anticipation tasks in a unified manner. The proposed MAT model is tested on four challenging benchmarks TVSeries, THUMOS'14, HDD, and EPIC-Kitchens-100, for online action detection and anticipation tasks, and it significantly outperforms all existing methods. Code is available at https://github.com/Echo0125/Memory-and-Anticipation-Transformer.

Atmospheric composition of WASP-85Ab with ESPRESSO/VLT observations

Transit spectroscopy is the most frequently used technique to reveal the atmospheric properties of exoplanets, while that at high resolution has the advantage to resolve the small Doppler shift of spectral lines, and the trace signal of the exoplanet atmosphere can be separately extracted. We obtain the transmission spectra of the extrasolar planet WASP-85Ab, a hot Jupiter in a 2.655-day orbit around a G5, V=11.2 mag host star, observed by high-resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO at the Very Large Telescope array for three transits. We present an analysis of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect on WASP-85A, and determine a spin-orbit angle ${λ= -16.155^{\circ}}^{+2.916}_{-2.879}$, suggesting that the planet is in an almost aligned orbit. Combining the transmission spectra of three nights, we tentatively detected H$α$ and Ca II absorption with $\gtrapprox 3σ$ via direct visual inspection of the transmission spectra with the Center-to-Limb variation and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effects removed, which still remain visible after excluding the cores of these strong lines with a 0.1 A mask. These spectral signals seems likely to origin from the planetary atmosphere, but we can not fully exclude their stellar origins. Via the cross-correlation analysis of a set of atoms and molecules, Li I is marginally detected at $\sim4σ$ level, suggesting that Li might be present in the atmosphere of WASP-85Ab.

VideoLLM: Modeling Video Sequence with Large Language Models

With the exponential growth of video data, there is an urgent need for automated technology to analyze and comprehend video content. However, existing video understanding models are often task-specific and lack a comprehensive capability of handling diverse tasks. The success of large language models (LLMs) like GPT has demonstrated their impressive abilities in sequence causal reasoning. Building upon this insight, we propose a novel framework called VideoLLM that leverages the sequence reasoning capabilities of pre-trained LLMs from natural language processing (NLP) for video sequence understanding. VideoLLM incorporates a carefully designed Modality Encoder and Semantic Translator, which convert inputs from various modalities into a unified token sequence. This token sequence is then fed into a decoder-only LLM. Subsequently, with the aid of a simple task head, our VideoLLM yields an effective unified framework for different kinds of video understanding tasks. To evaluate the efficacy of VideoLLM, we conduct extensive experiments using multiple LLMs and fine-tuning methods. We evaluate our VideoLLM on eight tasks sourced from four different datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the understanding and reasoning capabilities of LLMs can be effectively transferred to video understanding tasks. We release the code at https://github.com/cg1177/VideoLLM.

MRSN: Multi-Relation Support Network for Video Action Detection

Action detection is a challenging video understanding task, requiring modeling spatio-temporal and interaction relations. Current methods usually model actor-actor and actor-context relations separately, ignoring their complementarity and mutual support. To solve this problem, we propose a novel network called Multi-Relation Support Network (MRSN). In MRSN, Actor-Context Relation Encoder (ACRE) and Actor-Actor Relation Encoder (AARE) model the actor-context and actor-actor relation separately. Then Relation Support Encoder (RSE) computes the supports between the two relations and performs relation-level interactions. Finally, Relation Consensus Module (RCM) enhances two relations with the long-term relations from the Long-term Relation Bank (LRB) and yields a consensus. Our experiments demonstrate that modeling relations separately and performing relation-level interactions can achieve and outperformer state-of-the-art results on two challenging video datasets: AVA and UCF101-24.

BasicTAD: an Astounding RGB-Only Baseline for Temporal Action Detection

Temporal action detection (TAD) is extensively studied in the video understanding community by generally following the object detection pipeline in images. However, complex designs are not uncommon in TAD, such as two-stream feature extraction, multi-stage training, complex temporal modeling, and global context fusion. In this paper, we do not aim to introduce any novel technique for TAD. Instead, we study a simple, straightforward, yet must-known baseline given the current status of complex design and low detection efficiency in TAD. In our simple baseline (termed BasicTAD), we decompose the TAD pipeline into several essential components: data sampling, backbone design, neck construction, and detection head. We extensively investigate the existing techniques in each component for this baseline, and more importantly, perform end-to-end training over the entire pipeline thanks to the simplicity of design. As a result, this simple BasicTAD yields an astounding and real-time RGB-Only baseline very close to the state-of-the-art methods with two-stream inputs. In addition, we further improve the BasicTAD by preserving more temporal and spatial information in network representation (termed as PlusTAD). Empirical results demonstrate that our PlusTAD is very efficient and significantly outperforms the previous methods on the datasets of THUMOS14 and FineAction. Meanwhile, we also perform in-depth visualization and error analysis on our proposed method and try to provide more insights on the TAD problem. Our approach can serve as a strong baseline for future TAD research. The code and model will be released at https://github.com/MCG-NJU/BasicTAD.

Route to stabilize cubic gauche polynitrogen to ambient conditions via surface-saturation by hydrogen

Cubic gauche polynitrogen (cg-N) is an attractive high-energy density material. However, high-pressure synthesized cg-N will decompose at low-pressure and cannot exist at ambient conditions. Here, the stabilities of cg-N surfaces with and without saturations at different pressures and temperatures are investigated systematically. Pristine surfaces at 0 GPa are very brittle and will decompose at 300 K, especially (1 1 0) surface will collapse completely just after structural relaxation, whereas the decompositions of surfaces can be suppressed by applying pressure, indicating that surface instability causes the cg-N decomposition at low-pressure. Due to the saturation of dangling bonds and transferring electrons to the surfaces, saturation with H can stabilize surfaces at ambient conditions, while OH saturation cannot because of getting electrons from the surfaces. An acidic environment or surface saturation with less electronegative adsorbates is more favorable for the stability of polymerized nitrogen.

Detection of TiO and VO in the atmosphere of WASP-121b and Evidence for its temporal variation

We report the transit observations of the ultra hot Jupiter WASP-121b using the Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph (GHTS) at the 4-meter ground-based telescope Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR), covering the wavelength range $502-900$ nm. By dividing the target and reference star into 19 spectroscopic passbands and applying differential spectrophotometry, we derive spectroscopic transit light curves and fit them using Gaussian process framework to determine transit depths for every passbands. The obtained optical transmission spectrum shows a steep increased slope toward the blue wavelength, which seems to be too steep to be accounted for by the Rayleigh scattering alone. We note that the transmission spectrum from this work and other works differ obviously from each other, which was pointed out previously by \citet{Wilson2021} as evidence for temporal atmospheric variation. We perform a free chemistry retrieval analysis on the optical transmission spectra from this work and the literature HST/WFC3 NIR spectrum. We determine TiO, VO and H$_{2}$O with abundances of $-5.95_{-0.42}^{+0.47}$ dex, $-6.72_{-1.79}^{+0.51}$ dex, and $-4.13_{-0.46}^{+0.63}$ dex, respectively. We compare the abundances of all these three molecules derived from this work and previous works, and find that they are not consistent with each other, indicating the chemical compositions of the terminator region may change over long timescales. Future multi-epoch and high-precision transit observations are required to further confirm this phenomena. We note that when combining the transmission spectra in the optical and in NIR in retrieval analysis, the abundances of V and VO, the NIR-to-optical offset and the cloud deck pressure may be coupled with each other.

Thermal Emission from the hot Jupiter WASP-103b in J and Ks Bands

Hot Jupiters, particularly those with temperature higher than 2000 K are the best sample of planets that allow in-depth characterization of their atmospheres. We present here a thermal emission study of the ultra hot Jupiter WASP-103 b observed in two secondary eclipses with CFHT/WIRCam in J and Ks bands. By means of high precision differential photometry, we determine eclipse depths in J and Ks to an accuracy of 220 and 270 ppm, which are combined with the published HST/WFC3 and Spitzer data to retrieve a joint constraints on the properties of WASP-103 b dayside atmosphere. We find that the atmosphere is best fit with a thermal inversion layer included. The equilibrium chemistry retrieval indicates an enhanced C/O (1.35$^{+0.14}_{-0.17}$) and a super metallicity with [Fe/H]$=2.19^{+0.51}_{-0.63}$ composition. Given the near-solar metallicity of WASP-103 of [Fe/H]=0.06, this planet seems to be $\sim$100 more abundant than its host star. The free chemistry retrieval analysis yields a large abundance of FeH, H$^{-}$, CO$_2$ and CH$_4$. Additional data of better accuracy from future observations of JWST should provide better constraint of the atmospheric properties of WASP-103b.

Tentative detection of titanium oxide in the atmosphere of WASP-69 b with a 4m ground-based telescope

Transiting planets provide unique opportunities for the atmospheric characterization of exoplanets as they can reveal composition and the temperature structures at the day-night terminator regions in planetary atmospheres, and help understand the atmospheric process and formation environments of exoplanets. Here, we present the optical transmission spectroscopic study of an inflated Saturn-mass planet WASP-69 b, obtained by the 4-meter ground-based telescope Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). We obtain spectroscopic transit light curves in 20 passbands from 502 to 890 nm, and fit them using Gaussian Processes and an analytical transit model to obtain independent transit depths for each. The derived transmission spectrum of WASP-69 b shows a slope with absorption depth increasing towards blue wavelengths, indicating a Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere consistent with previous works. The retrieval analysis yields a tentative detection of TiO absorption feature in the transmission spectrum. We present the first results from the SOAR telescope to characterize exoplanetary atmospheres proving its capability and precision for hot Jupiters around bright stars in an area dominated by results from large ground-based telescopes or space telescopes.

Champion Solution for the WSDM2023 Toloka VQA Challenge

In this report, we present our champion solution to the WSDM2023 Toloka Visual Question Answering (VQA) Challenge. Different from the common VQA and visual grounding (VG) tasks, this challenge involves a more complex scenario, i.e. inferring and locating the object implicitly specified by the given interrogative question. For this task, we leverage ViT-Adapter, a pre-training-free adapter network, to adapt multi-modal pre-trained Uni-Perceiver for better cross-modal localization. Our method ranks first on the leaderboard, achieving 77.5 and 76.347 IoU on public and private test sets, respectively. It shows that ViT-Adapter is also an effective paradigm for adapting the unified perception model to vision-language downstream tasks. Code and models will be released at https://github.com/czczup/ViT-Adapter/tree/main/wsdm2023.

A Two-limb Explanation for the Optical-to-infrared Transmission Spectrum of the Hot Jupiter HAT-P-32Ab

We present a new optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-32Ab acquired with the Carnegie Observatories Spectrograph and Multiobject Imaging Camera (COSMIC) on the Palomar 200 inch Hale Telescope (P200). The P200/COSMIC transmission spectrum, covering a wavelength range of 3990--9390 Å, is composed of 25 spectrophotometric bins with widths ranging from 200 to 400 Åand consistent with previous transit measurements obtained in the common wavelength range. We derive a combined optical transmission spectrum based on measurements from five independent instruments, which, along with the 1.1--1.7 $μ$m spectrum acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope and two Spitzer measurements, exhibits an enhanced scattering slope blueward of a relatively flat optical continuum, a water absorption feature at 1.4 $μ$m, and a carbon dioxide feature at 4.4 $μ$m. We perform Bayesian spectral retrieval analyses on the 0.3--5.1 $μ$m transmission spectrum and find that it can be well explained by a two-limb approximation of $134^{+45}_{-33}\times$ solar metallicity, with a strongly hazy morning limb of $1134^{+232}_{-194}$ K and a haze-free evening limb of $1516^{+33}_{-44}$~K. This makes HAT-P-32Ab a promising target for James Webb Space Telescope to look for asymmetric signatures directly in the light curves.

FAST: Faster Arbitrarily-Shaped Text Detector with Minimalist Kernel Representation

We propose an accurate and efficient scene text detection framework, termed FAST (i.e., faster arbitrarily-shaped text detector). Different from recent advanced text detectors that used complicated post-processing and hand-crafted network architectures, resulting in low inference speed, FAST has two new designs. (1) We design a minimalist kernel representation (only has 1-channel output) to model text with arbitrary shape, as well as a GPU-parallel post-processing to efficiently assemble text lines with a negligible time overhead. (2) We search the network architecture tailored for text detection, leading to more powerful features than most networks that are searched for image classification. Benefiting from these two designs, FAST achieves an excellent trade-off between accuracy and efficiency on several challenging datasets, including Total Text, CTW1500, ICDAR 2015, and MSRA-TD500. For example, FAST-T yields 81.6% F-measure at 152 FPS on Total-Text, outperforming the previous fastest method by 1.7 points and 70 FPS in terms of accuracy and speed. With TensorRT optimization, the inference speed can be further accelerated to over 600 FPS. Code and models will be released at https://github.com/czczup/FAST.

InternVideo: General Video Foundation Models via Generative and Discriminative Learning

The foundation models have recently shown excellent performance on a variety of downstream tasks in computer vision. However, most existing vision foundation models simply focus on image-level pretraining and adpation, which are limited for dynamic and complex video-level understanding tasks. To fill the gap, we present general video foundation models, InternVideo, by taking advantage of both generative and discriminative self-supervised video learning. Specifically, InternVideo efficiently explores masked video modeling and video-language contrastive learning as the pretraining objectives, and selectively coordinates video representations of these two complementary frameworks in a learnable manner to boost various video applications. Without bells and whistles, InternVideo achieves state-of-the-art performance on 39 video datasets from extensive tasks including video action recognition/detection, video-language alignment, and open-world video applications. Especially, our methods can obtain 91.1% and 77.2% top-1 accuracy on the challenging Kinetics-400 and Something-Something V2 benchmarks, respectively. All of these results effectively show the generality of our InternVideo for video understanding. The code will be released at https://github.com/OpenGVLab/InternVideo .

Exploring adaptation of VideoMAE for Audio-Visual Diarization & Social @ Ego4d Looking at me Challenge

In this report, we present the transferring pretrained video mask autoencoders(VideoMAE) to egocentric tasks for Ego4d Looking at me Challenge. VideoMAE is the data-efficient pretraining model for self-supervised video pre-training and can easily transfer to downstream tasks. We show that the representation transferred from VideoMAE has good Spatio-temporal modeling and the ability to capture small actions. We only need to use egocentric data to train 10 epochs based on VideoMAE which pretrained by the ordinary videos acquired from a third person's view, and we can get better results than the baseline on Ego4d Looking at me Challenge.
