Ubiquitous CP violation in a top-inspired left-right model

We explore CP violation in a Left-Right Model that reproduces the quark mass and CKM rotation angle hierarchies in a relatively natural way by fixing the bidoublet Higgs VEVs to be in the ratio m_b:m_t. Our model is quite general and allows for CP to be broken by both the Higgs VEVs and the Yukawa couplings. Despite this generality, CP violation may be parameterized in terms of two basic phases. A very interesting feature of the model is that the mixing angles in the right-handed sector are found to be equal to their left-handed counterparts to a very good approximation. Furthermore, the right-handed analogue of the usual CKM phase delta_L is found to satisfy the relation delta_R \approx delta_L. The parameter space of the model is explored by using an adaptive Monte Carlo algorithm and the allowed regions in parameter space are determined by enforcing experimental constraints from the K and B systems. This method of solution allows us to evaluate the left- and right-handed CKM matrices numerically for various combinations of the two fundamental CP-odd phases in the model. We find that all experimental constraints may be satisfied with right-handed W and Flavour Changing Neutral Higgs masses as low as about 2 TeV and 7 TeV, respectively.

Maximal Neutrino Mixing from an Attractive Infrared Fixed Point

In the Standard Model (and MSSM), renormalization effects on neutrino mixing are generally very small and the attractive fixed points are at vanishing neutrino mixing. However for multi-higgs extensions of the Standard Model, renormalization effects on neutrino mixing can be large and nontrivial fixed points are possible. Here we examine a simple two-higgs model. For two flavors, maximal mixing is an attractive infrared fixed point. For three flavors, the neutrino mass matrix evolves towards large off-diagonal elements at low energies. The experimentally suggested bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern is one possible attractive infrared fixed point.

Renormalization of the neutrino mass matrix

The renormalization group equations for the general 2 by 2, complex, neutrino mass matrix are shown to have exact, analytic solutions. Simple formulas are given for the physical mixing angle, complex phase and mass ratio in terms of their initial values and the energy scales. We also establish a (complex) renormalization invariant relating these parameters. The qualitative features of the physical parameters' renormalization are clearly illustrated in vector field plots. In both the SM and MSSM, maximal mixing is a saddle point.

Neutrino mixing in the seesaw model

In the seesaw model with hierarchical Dirac masses, the neutrino mixing angle exhibits the behavior of a narrow resonance. In general, the angle is strongly suppressed, but it can be maximal for special parameter values. We delineate the small regions in which this happens, for the two flavor problem. On the other hand, the physical neutrino masses are hierarchical, in general, except in a large part of the region in which the mixing angle is sizable, where they are nearly degenerate. Our general analysis is also applicable to the RGE of neutrino mass matrix, where we find analytic solutions for the running of physical parameters, in addition to a complex RGE invariant relating them. It is also shown that, if one mixing angle is small, the three neutrino problem reduces to two, two flavor problems.

Remarks on models with singlet neutrino in large extra dimensions

Small Dirac masses for neutrinos are natural in models with singlet fermions in large extra dimensions with quantum gravity scale M_{\ast} \sim 1- 100 TeV. We study two modifications of the minimal model in order to obtain the mass scale relevant for atmospheric neutrino oscillations with at most O(1) higher-dimensional Yukawa couplings and with M_{\ast} \sim a few TeV. 1) In models with singlet fermions in smaller number of extra dimensions than gravity, we find that the effects on BR (μ\to e γ) and on charged-current universality in π^- \to e \barν, μ\barν decays are suppressed as compared to that in the minimal model with neutrino and gravity in the same space. 2) If small Dirac masses for the singlets are added along with lepton number violating couplings, then the mass scales and mixing angles for neutrino oscillations can be different from those relevant for μ\to e γand π^- \to e \barν, μ\barν. Thus, in both modified models the constraints on M_{\ast} from BR (μ\to e γ) and π^- \to e \barν, μ\barν decays can be significantly relaxed. Furthermore, constraints from supernova 1987a strongly disfavor oscillations of active neutrinos to sterile neutrinos in both the minimal and the modified models.

Direct CP violation in radiative b decays in and beyond the Standard Model

We consider the partial rate asymmetry in the inclusive decay modes b to s gamma and b to d gamma, concentrating on non-standard models with new charged Higgs interactions. We find that the charged Higgs contribution to the asymmetry for b to s gamma is small in such models due to a universal cancellation mechanism. The asymmetry is therefore difficult to distinguish experimentally from the Standard Model (SM) value, which is also small. The cancellation mechanism is found to be rendered inoperative in supersymmetry due to the presence of chargino loops. Unlike b to s gamma, the rate asymmetry for b to d gamma in Higgs models can be quite different from its SM value, generally ranging from -20% to +20%. Specific model calculations are performed for the Three-Higgs Doublet Model and the ``Top'' Two-Higgs Doublet Model to serve as illustrations. We also offer some suggestions that may be helpful to experimentalists in the detection of the inclusive mode b to d gamma.

Novel CP-violating Effects in B decays from Charged-Higgs in a Two-Higgs Doublet Model for the Top Quark

We explore charged-Higgs cp-violating effects in a specific type III two-Higgs doublet model which is theoretically attractive as it accommodates the large mass of the top quark in a natural fashion. Two new CP-violating phases arise from the right-handed up quark sector. We consider CP violation in both neutral and charged B decays. Some of the important findings are as follows. 1) Large direct-CP asymmetry is found to be possible for B+- to psi/J K+-. 2) Sizable D-anti-D mixing effect at the percent level is found to be admissible despite the stringent constraints from the data on K-anti-K mixing, b to s gamma and B to tau nu decays. 3) A simple but distinctive CP asymmetry pattern emerges in decays of B_d and B_s mesons, including B_d to psi/J K_S, D+ D-, and B_s to D_s+ D_s-, psi eta/eta^prime, psi/J K_S. 4) The effect of D-anti-D mixing on the CP asymmetry in B+- to D/anti-D K+- and on the extraction of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle from such decays can be significant.

Seesaw model and its Lorentz group formulation

For two flavors, the seesaw matrix can be identified with a two dimensional representation of the Lorentz group. This analogy facilitates the computation of physical neutrino parameters, while giving an intuitive understanding of the results. It is found that the induced mixing angle exhibits resonance behavior. For maximal mixing, we derive a precise relation among the right-handed mixing angle, the Majorana mass ratio, and their phase.

Hermitian quark mass matrices with four texture zeros

We provide a complete and systematic analysis of hermitian, hierarchical quark mass matrices with four texture zeros. Using triangular mass matrices, each pattern of texture zeros is readily shown to lead to a definite relation between the CKM parameters and the quark masses. Nineteen pairs are found to be consistent with present data, and one other is marginally acceptable. In particular, no parallel structure between the up and down mass matrices is found to be favorable with data.

Hierarchical Majorana Scales in the Seesaw Model

If the mixing angles in each of the seesaw sectors are all small, and the neutrino masses are hierarchical, we study the conditions for large neutrino mixing using triangular matrices. In particular, the implication of the neutrino oscillation data for the mass hierarchy in the heavy Majorana sector is examined, and the heavy Majorana scales are shown to depend sensitively on the solar mixing angle.

A New Approach to Texture Analysis of Quark Mass Matrices

The triangular basis is proposed as an efficient way of analyzing general quark mass matrices. Applying the method to hermitian hierarchical matrices with five texture zeros, analytic predictions for quark mixing can be readily obtained. One unique texture pair is found most favorable with present data. Some remarks are also made concerning parallel textures between the up and down quark mass matrices with four zeros.

Mass Hierarchies and the Seesaw Neutrino Mixing

We give a general analysis of neutrino mixing in the seesaw mechanism with three flavors. Assuming that the Dirac and u-quark mass matrices are similar, we establish simple relations between the neutrino parameters and individual Majorana masses. They are shown to depend rather strongly on the physical neutrino mixing angles. We calculate explicitly the implied Majorana mass hierarchies for parameter sets corresponding to different solutions to the solar neutrino problem.

Classification and Application of Triangular Quark Mass Matrices

The hierarchical structure in the quark masses and mixings allows its ten physical parameters to be most conveniently encoded in mass matrices of the upper triangular form. We classify these matrices in the hierarchical, minimal parameter basis where the mismatch between the weak and mass eigenstates involves only small mixing angles. Ten such pairs are obtained for the up and down quarks. This analysis can be used to classify texture zeros of general mass matrices. For hermitian mass matrices with five texture zeros, this method yields immediately five pairs of textures with simple, analytic predictions for the quark mixings. Comparison with data indicates that, of the five pairs, three are disfavored, one is marginally acceptable, while the fifth fits well.

Triangular Textures for Quark Mass Matrices

The hierarchical quark masses and small mixing angles are shown to lead to a simple triangular form for the U- and D-type quark mass matrices. In the basis where one of the matrices is diagonal, each matrix element of the other is, to a good approximation, the product of a quark mass and a CKM matrix element. The physical content of a general mass matrix can be easily deciphered in its triangular form. This parameterization could serve as a useful starting point for model building. Examples of mass textures are analyzed using this method.

CP Violation in B Decays in a 2-Higgs Doublet Model for the Top Quark

In the absence of natural flavor conservation, multi-Higgs doublet models generally contain new sources of CP violation and anomalous charged Higgs Yukawa couplings. We present a charged-Higgs CP violation study of one such two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) which treats the top quark differently from the other quarks. The phenomenological implications for the K-Kbar system and for B decays differ significantly from those of the standard model (SM) and of the 2HDM's with natural flavor conservation. In particular, the SM phase in this model could take a wide range of values, and the CP asymmetry in the "gold-plated" decay mode B to J/psi K_S could be quite different from and even of opposite sign relative to the SM prediction. A new mechanism is also noted for generating a large neutron electric dipole moment which is close to the present experimental limit.

CP Violation in a two-Higgs doublet model for the top quark: B to psi K_S

We explore charged-Higgs CP-violating effects in an intriguing two-Higgs doublet model which accords special status to the top quark. In this model the heaviness of the top quark originates naturally from the much larger VEV of the second Higgs doublet compared to that of the first. The phenomenology of this model is quite distinct from that of the usual formulations of the two-Higgs doublet model. In particular, the model can easily account for the observed CP violation in the kaon sector even if the CKM matrix is real. The associated non-standard CP phase can be monitored through measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B to psi K_S in experiments at the upcoming B-factories.

Interactions of a Single Goldstino

The single goldstino interaction is given by the goldstino derivative coupling to the supercurrent. In an alternative description, the goldstino couples nonderivatively. We give a simple method to establish the equivalence of the two approaches, valid to all orders in perturbation theory, and for any scattering process involving an arbitrary number of particles, but with a single external goldstino. In the meantime, we find in the nonderivative form of the goldstino interaction a new quartic vertex that has been overlooked, and terms that were included incorrectly in the literature. The phenomenological implication of this new quartic operator is discussed.

Nonlinear Supersymmetric Effective Lagrangian and Goldstino Interactions at High Energies

We show that the nonlinear supersymmetric effective lagrangian can be used for model-independent parameterization of the light gravitino scattering amplitude at energies up to and above the soft supersymmetry-breaking masses. This provides the most convenient framework for systematic studies of goldstino phenomenology both at low energies and in high energy colliders.
