On-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source

Integrated entangled photon pair source is an essential resource for both fundamental investigations and practical applications of quantum information science. Currently there have been several types of entanglement, among which the transverse-mode entanglement is becoming attractive because of its unique advantages. Here, we report an on-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source via the spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in a multimode silicon waveguide. Transverse-mode photon pairs are verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of $\sim$2~THz, and a maximally entangled Bell state is also produced with a net fidelity of $0.96\pm0.01$. Our entangled photon pair source is the key element for quantum photonics based on transverse-mode, and also has the possibility to extend to higher-dimensional Hilbert space. Furthermore, the transverse-mode entanglement can be converted coherently to path and polarization entanglement, which paves the way to realizing highly complex quantum photonic circuits with multiple degrees of freedom.

Efficient Machine Learning Representations of Surface Code with Boundaries, Defects, Domain Walls and Twists

Machine learning representations of many-body quantum states have recently been introduced as an ansatz to describe the ground states and unitary evolutions of many-body quantum systems. We explore one of the most important representations, restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) representation, in stabilizer formalism. We give the general method of constructing RBM representation for stabilizer code states and find the exact RBM representation for several types of stabilizer groups with the number of hidden neurons equal or less than the number of visible neurons, which indicates that the representation is extremely efficient. Then we analyze the surface code with boundaries, defects, domain walls and twists in full detail and find that all the models can be efficiently represented via RBM ansatz states. Besides, the case for Kitaev's $D(\Zb_d)$ model, which is a generalized model of surface code, is also investigated.

On-demand generation of shallow silicon vacancy in silicon carbide

Defects in silicon carbide have been explored as promising spin systems in quantum technologies. However, for practical quantum metrology and quantum communication, it is critical to achieve the on-demand shallow spin-defect generation. In this work, we present the generation and characterization of shallow silicon vacancies in silicon carbide by using different implanted ions and annealing conditions. The conversion efficiency of silicon vacancy of helium ions is shown to be higher than that by carbon and hydrogen ions in a wide implanted fluence range. Furthermore, after optimizing annealing conditions, the conversion efficiency can be increased more than 2 times. Due to the high density of the generated ensemble defects, the sensitivity to sense a static magnetic field can be research as high as , which is about 15 times higher than previous results. By carefully optimizing implanted conditions, we further show that a single silicon vacancy array can be generated with about 80 % conversion efficiency, which reaches the highest conversion yield in solid state systems. The results pave the way for using on-demand generated shallow silicon vacancy for quantum information processing and quantum photonics.

Three-Leaf Dart-Shaped Single-Crystal BN Formation Promoted by Surface Oxygen

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals with various shapes have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition over the past several years. Here we report the formation of three-leaf dart (3LD)-shaped single crystals of h-BN on Cu foil by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The leaves of the 3LD-shaped h-BN are as long as 18 μm and their edges are smooth armchair on one side and stepped armchair on the other. Careful analysis revealed that surface oxygen plays an important role in the formation of the 3LD shape. Oxygen suppressed h-BN nucleation by passivating Cu surface active sites and lowered the edge attachment energy, which caused the growth kinetics to change to a diffusion-controlled mode.

64-Qubit Quantum Circuit Simulation

Classical simulations of quantum circuits are limited in both space and time when the qubit count is above 50, the realm where quantum supremacy reigns. However, recently, for the low depth circuit with more than 50 qubits, there are several methods of simulation proposed by teams at Google and IBM. Here, we present a scheme of simulation which can extract a large amount of measurement outcomes within a short time, achieving a 64-qubit simulation of a universal random circuit of depth 22 using a 128-node cluster, and 56- and 42-qubit circuits on a single PC. We also estimate that a 72-qubit circuit of depth 23 can be simulated in about 16 h on a supercomputer identical to that used by the IBM team. Moreover, the simulation processes are exceedingly separable, hence parallelizable, involving just a few inter-process communications. Our work enables simulating more qubits with less hardware burden and provides a new perspective for classical simulations.

Enhanced absorption microscopy with correlated photon pairs

By harnessing the quantum states of light for illumination, precise phase and absorption estimations can be achieved with precision beyond the standard quantum limit. Despite their significance for precision measurements, quantum states are fragile in noisy environments which leads to difficulties in revealing the quantum advantage. In this work, we propose a scheme to improve optical absorption estimation precision by using the correlated photon pairs from spontaneous parametric down-conversion as the illumination. This scheme performs better than clasical illumination when the loss is below a critical value. Experimentally, the scheme is demonstrated by a scanning transmission type microscope that uses correlated photon illumination. As a result, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a two-photon image shows a $1.36$-fold enhancement over that of single-photon image for a single-layer graphene with a $0.98$ transmittance. This enhancement factor will be larger when using multi-mode squeezed state as the illumination.

Generation of multiphoton entangled quantum states with a single silicon nanowire

Multiphoton entanglement plays a critical role in quantum information processing, and greatly improves our fundamental understanding of the quantum world. Despite tremendous efforts in either bulk media or fiber-based devices, nonlinear interactions in integrated circuits show great promise as an excellent platform for photon pair generation with its high brightness, stability and scalability \cite{Caspani2017}. Here, we demonstrate the generation of bi- and multiphoton polarization entangled qubits in a single silicon nanowire waveguide, and these qubits directly compatible with the dense wavelength division multiplexing in telecommunication system. Multiphoton interference and quantum state tomography were used to characterize the quality of the entangled states. Four-photon entanglement states among two frequency channels were ascertained with a fidelity of $0.78\pm0.02$. Our work realizes the integrated multiphoton source in a relatively simple pattern and paves a way for the revolution of multiphoton quantum science.

Strong indirect coupling between graphene-based mechanical resonators via a phonon cavity

Mechanical resonators are promising systems for storing and manipulating information. To transfer information between mechanical modes, either direct coupling or an interface between these modes is needed. In previous works, strong coupling between different modes in a single mechanical resonator and direct interaction between neighboring mechanical resonators have been demonstrated. However, coupling between distant mechanical resonators, which is a crucial request for long-distance classical and quantum information processing using mechanical devices, remains an experimental challenge. Here, we report the experimental observation of strong indirect coupling between separated mechanical resonators in a graphene-based electromechanical system. The coupling is mediated by a far-off-resonant phonon cavity through virtual excitations via a Raman-like process. By controlling the resonant frequency of the phonon cavity, the indirect coupling can be tuned in a wide range. Our results may lead to the development of gate-controlled all-mechanical devices and open up the possibility of long-distance quantum mechanical experiments.

Electrotunable artificial molecules based on van der Waals heterostructures

Quantum confinement has made it possible to detect and manipulate single-electron charge and spin states. The recent focus on two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted significant interests on possible applications to quantum devices, including detecting and manipulating either single-electron charging behavior or spin and valley degrees of freedom. However, the most popular model systems, consisting of tunable double-quantum-dot molecules, are still extremely difficult to realize in these materials. We show that an artificial molecule can be reversibly formed in atomically thin MoS2 sandwiched in hexagonal boron nitride, with each artificial atom controlled separately by electrostatic gating. The extracted values for coupling energies at different regimes indicate a single-electron transport behavior, with the coupling strength between the quantum dots tuned monotonically. Moreover, in the low-density regime, we observe a decrease of the conductance with magnetic field, suggesting the observation of Coulomb blockade weak anti-localization. Our experiments demonstrate for the first time the realization of an artificial quantum-dot molecule in a gated MoS2 van der Waals heterostructure, which could be used to investigate spin-valley physics. The compatibility with large-scale production, gate controllability, electron-hole bipolarity, and new quantum degrees of freedom in the family of 2D materials opens new possibilities for quantum electronics and its applications.

A tunable hybrid qubit in a triple quantum dot

We experimentally demonstrate quantum coherent dynamics of a triple-dot-based multi-electron hybrid qubit. Pulsed experiments show that this system can be conveniently initialized, controlled, and measured electrically, and has good coherence time as compared to gate time. Furthermore, the current multi-electron hybrid qubit has an operation frequency that is tunable in a wide range, from 2 to about 15 GHz. We provide qualitative understandings of the experimental observations by mapping it onto a three-electron system, and compare it with the double dot hybrid qubit and the all-exchange triple-dot qubit.

Quantum dot behavior in transition metal dichalcogenides nanostructures

Recently, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) semiconductors have been utilized for investigating quantum phenomena because of their unique band structures and novel electronic properties. In a quantum dot (QD), electrons are confined in all lateral dimensions, offering the possibility for detailed investigation and controlled manipulation of individual quantum systems. Beyond the definition of graphene QDs by opening an energy gap in nanoconstrictions, with the presence of a bandgap, gate-defined QDs can be achieved on TMDCs semiconductors. In this paper, we review the confinement and transport of QDs in TMDCs nanostructures. The fabrication techniques for demonstrating two-dimensional (2D) materials nanostructures such as field-effect transistors and QDs, mainly based on e-beam lithography and transfer assembly techniques are discussed. Subsequently, we focus on transport through TMDCs nanostructures and QDs. With steady improvement in nanoscale materials characterization and using graphene as a springboard, 2D materials offer a platform that allows creation of heterostructure QDs integrated with a variety of crystals, each of which has entirely unique physical properties.

Near-field collection of fluorescence of quantum dots with a fiber-integrated multimode plasmonic probe

Strong light-matter interaction and high-efficiency optical collection of fluorescence from quantum emitters are crucial topics in quantum and nanophotonic fields. High-quality cavities, dispersive photonic crystal waveguides and even plasmonic structures have been used to enhance the interaction with quantum emitters, thus realize efficient collection of the fluorescence. In this work, a new method is proposed to collect the fluorescence of quantum dots (QDs) with a fiber-integrated multimode silver nanowire (AgNW) waveguide. Fluorescence lifetime measurement is performed to investigate the coupling between QDs and different plasmonic modes. Compared with far-field collection method, the AgNW-fiber probe can realize near-unity collection efficiency theoretically. This fiber-integrated plasmonic probe may be useful in the area of nanophotonics and also promising for quantum information devices.

Coherent phonon Rabi oscillations with a high frequency carbon nanotube phonon cavity

Phonon-cavity electromechanics allows the manipulation of mechanical oscillations similar to photon-cavity systems. Many advances on this subject have been achieved in various materials. In addition, the coherent phonon transfer (phonon Rabi oscillations) between the phonon cavity mode and another oscillation mode has attracted many interest in nano-science. Here we demonstrate coherent phonon transfer in a carbon nanotube phonon-cavity system with two mechanical modes exhibiting strong dynamical coupling. The gate-tunable phonon oscillation modes are manipulated and detected by extending the red-detuned pump idea of photonic cavity electromechanics. The first- and second-order coherent phonon transfers are observed with Rabi frequencies 591 kHz and 125 kHz, respectively. The frequency quality factor product fQ_m~2=10^12 Hz achieved here is larger thank k_B T_base/h, which may enable the future realization of Rabi oscillations in the quantum regime.

Parametric strong mode-coupling in carbon nanotube mechanical resonators

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention for use in nanomechanical devices because of their exceptional properties, such as large resonant frequencies, low mass, and high quality factors. Here, we report the first experimental realization of parametric strong coupling between two mechanical modes on a single CNT nanomechanical resonator, by applying an extra microwave pump. This parametric pump method can be used to couple mechanical modes with arbitrary frequency differences. The properties of the mechanical resonator are detected by single-electron tunneling at low temperature, which is found to be strongly coupled to both modes. The coupling strength between the two modes can be tuned by the pump power, setting the coupling regime from weak to strong. This tunability may be useful in further phonon manipulations in carbon nanotubes.

Controlled Quantum Operations of a Semiconductor Three-Qubit System

The Coulomb interactions between electrons play important roles in coupling multiple qubits in various quantum systems. Here we demonstrate controlled quantum operations of three electron charge qubits based on three capacitively coupled semiconductor double quantum dots. The strong interactions between one double dot and other two double dots enable us to control the coherent rotations of one target qubit by the states of two control qubits.

Spin blockade and coherent dynamics of high-spin states in a three-electron double quantum dot

Asymmetry in a three-electron double quantum dot (DQD) allows spin blockade, when spin-3/2 (quadruplet) states and spin-1/2 (doublet) states have different charge configurations. We have observed this DQD spin blockade near the (1,2)-(2,1) charge transition using a pulsed-gate technique and a charge sensor. We then use this spin blockade to detect Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference and coherent oscillations between the spin quadruplet and doublet states. Such studies add to our understandings of coherence and control properties of three-spin states in a double dot, which in turn would benefit the explorations into various qubit encoding schemes in semiconductor nanostructures.

On-chip coherent conversion of photonic quantum signals between different degrees of freedom

In the quantum world, a single particle can have various degrees of freedom to encode quantum information. Controlling multiple degrees of freedom simultaneously is necessary to describe a particle fully and, therefore, to use it more efficiently. Here we introduce the transverse waveguide-mode degree of freedom to quantum photonic integrated circuits, and demonstrate the coherent conversion of a photonic quantum state between path, polarization and transverse waveguide-mode degrees of freedom on a single chip. The preservation of quantum coherence in these conversion processes is proven by single-photon and two-photon quantum interference using a fibre beam splitter or on-chip beam splitters. These results provide us with the ability to control and convert multiple degrees of freedom of photons for quantum photonic integrated circuit-based quantum information process.

Tunable Hybrid Qubit in a GaAs Double Quantum Dot

We experimentally demonstrate a tunable hybrid qubit in a five-electron GaAs double quantum dot. The qubit is encoded in the (1,4) charge regime of the double dot and can be manipulated completely electrically. More importantly, dot anharmonicity leads to quasiparallel energy levels and a new anticrossing, which help preserve quantum coherence of the qubit and yield a useful working point. We have performed Larmor precession and Ramsey fringe experiments near the new working point and find that the qubit decoherence time is significantly improved over a charge qubit. This work shows a new way to encode a semiconductor qubit that is controllable and coherent.
