Ultralow Frequency Magnetic Comb Using Pulse Modulated Spin Maser

Frequency combs are widely used in fundamental physics and practical applications at various areas. Here we report the realization of an ultralow frequency magnetic comb using a pulse modulated spin maser in the Rb-Xe hybrid gaseous spin system. The magnetic frequency comb has a spectral distribution depending mainly on the pulse duration, the strength and phase shift of the feedback field. A simple theoretical model is given in terms of the spin echo chain and agrees well with the experimental results. The magnetic frequency comb works in an ultralow frequency range and reaches a frequency resolution down to tens of nanohertz.

Nonlinear dynamics in an artificial feedback spin maser II: dependence on feedback configurations and time crystal effects

Artificial feedback spin masers exhibit rich nonlinear dynamics, yet a systematic framework for understanding and controlling their behaviors remains elusive. In this paper, we consider the polarity and geometric configuration of the feedback field as important control parameters for studying the nonlinear dynamics of spin masers. By cooperatively tuning the strength and phase delay of feedback field, we investigate the spin dynamics at various configurations of the feedback field. Periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic spin oscillations are uncovered. Specifically, a unique spin oscillation mode akin to the time crystal effects emerges within a certain parameter regime. This work presents a different viewpoint understanding the nonlinear dynamics of spin masers including the time crystal.

Laser power stabilization using conservation law in acoustic optic modulator

Laser power stabilization plays an important role in modern precision instruments based on atom-laser interactions. Here we demonstrate an alternative active control method of laser power utilizing the conservation law in an acoustic optic modulator (AOM). By adjusting the 1st order beam power to dynamically follow the fluctuation of the total power of all diffraction beams, the 0th order application beam as the difference term, is stabilized. Experimental result demonstrates that the relative power noise of the controlled application beam is reduced by a factor of 200, reaching $4 \times 10^{-6} $ Hz$^{-1/2}$ at 10$^{-4}$ Hz compared with the uncontrolled total power. Allan deviation shows that the application beam reaches a relative power instability of 3.28$\times 10^{-6}$ at 500 s averaging time. In addition, the method allows a high availability of total power source. The method opens a new way of laser power stabilization and shall be very useful in applications such as atomic clocks, laser interferometers and gyroscopes.

Nonlinear dynamics in an artificial feedback spin maser

Spin masers with optical detection and artificial feedback are widely used in fundamental and practical applications. However, a full picture of the maser dynamics is still absent. By solving the feedback driven Bloch equations, we simulated the dynamics of an ideal spin maser in a broad parameter space. Rich nonlinear dynamics including high order harmonics generation, nonperiodic spin oscillations and frequency comb were revealed when the artificial feedback interaction exceeds the normal spin-field interaction. We also propose a pulse feedback spin maser protocol, which constructs an ultralow field magnetic frequency comb and could be useful in precision atomic magnetometers in searching for spin-dependent exotic interactions.

Spin Resonance in Perspective of Floquet Theory and Brillouin-Wigner Perturbation Method

We studied the two-level spin resonance in a new perspective. Using the Floquet theory, the periodic interaction Hamiltonians were transfromed into a time-independent interaction. Using the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation method, a degenerated subspace is constructed, where the effective Hamiltonian is given in a perturbation expansion. In this framework, we found that the upper triangular element $\langle \alpha | H^1 | \beta \rangle$, determines whether the resonance happens. The generalized Rabi frequency and the Bloch-Siegert shift were solved straightforwardly as the first order and the second order solution, proving the benefit of the developed method.

Observation of Time Crystal in a Spin Maser System

Pair interaction potentials between atoms in a crystal are in general non-monotonic in distance, with a local minimum whose position gives the lattice constant of the crystal. A temporal analogue of this idea of crystal formation is still pending despite intensive studies on the time crystal phase. In a hybrid spin maser system with a time delay feedback, we report the observation of a time crystal induced by a retarded interaction with a characteristic time scale. This nonequilibrium phase features a self-sustained oscillation with an emergent frequency other than the intrinsic Larmor precession frequency of the spin maser system. It is shown that the amplitude of the oscillation is robust against perturbation, while its time phase randomly distributes from 0 to $2\pi$ for different realizations, a signature of spontaneous time translation symmetry breaking. This time crystal phase emerges only when the feedback strength exceeds a critical value, at which the system experiences a first order phase transition. Such a retarded interaction induced time crystal is closer to the idea of crystal, compared to other time crystal realizations.

Self-driven Hybrid Atomic Spin Oscillator

A self-driven hybrid atomic spin oscillator is demonstrated in theory and experiment with a vapor Rb-Xe dual-spin system. The raw signal of Rb spin oscillation is amplified, phase-shifted and sent back to drive the Xe spins coherently. By fine tuning the driving field strength and phase, a self-sustaining spin oscillation signal with zero frequency shift is obtained. The effective coherence time is infinitely prolonged beyond the intrinsic coherence time of Xe spins, forming a hybrid atomic spin oscillator. Spectral analysis indicates that a frequency resolution of 13.1 nHz is achieved, enhancing the detection sensitivity for magnetic field. Allan deviation analysis shows that the spin oscillator can operate in continuous wave mode like a spin maser. The prototype spin oscillator can be easily implanted into other hybrid spin systems and enhance the detection sensitivity of alkali metal-noble gas comagnetometers.

Response Dynamics of Alkali Metal-Noble Gas Hybrid Trispin System

With numerical calculation of coupled Bloch equations, we have simulated the spin dynamics of nuclear magnetic resonance gyroscope based on alkali metal-noble gas hybrid trispin system. From the perspective of damping harmonic oscillator, a thorough analysis of the response dynamics is demonstrated. The simulation results shows a linear increasing response of gyroscope signal while the noblge gas nuclear spin magnetization and alkali atomic spin lifetime parameters are at the over damping condition. An upper limit of response is imposed on the NMR gyroscope signal due to the inherent dynamics of the hybrid trispin system. The results agrees with present available experimental results and provide useful guidings for future experiments.

High-performance coherent population trapping atomic clock with direct-modulation distributed Bragg reflector laser

The coherent population trapping (CPT) atomic clock is very promising for use in next-generation spaceborne applications owing to its compactness and high performance. In this paper, we propose and implement a CPT atomic clock based on the direct modulation of a large-modulation-bandwidth and narrow-linewidth distributed Bragg reflector laser, which replaces the usually used external bulk modulator in the high-performance CPT clock. Our method retains the high performance while significantly reducing the size. Using this highly compact bichromatic light source and simplest CPT configuration, in which a circularly polarized bichromatic laser interrogates the ^{87}Rb atom system, a CPT signal of clock transition with a narrow linewidth and high contrast is observed. We then lock the local oscillator frequency to the CPT error signal and demonstrate a short-term frequency stability of 3.6 \times 10^{-13} {\tau}^{-1/2} (4 s \le {\tau} \le 200 s). We attribute it to the ultralow laser frequency and intensity noise as well as to the high-quality-factor CPT signal. This study can pave the way for the development of compact high-performance CPT clocks based on our scheme.

Tri-spin dynamics in alkali metal-noble gas NMR gyroscope

Alkali metal-noble gas NMR gyroscope is widely used for precision rotation measurement in fundamental and applied physics. By numerically simulating the alkali-nuclear-nuclear tri-spin dynamics, we investigate the dependence of gyroscope response on alkali spin relaxation time and nuclear spin magnetization. We found additional resonance peaks appear due to a new source of instability, namely the inherent multistability of tri-spin dynamics. The numerical simulation results agree well with the recent experiment, enabling a better understanding and exploitation of the gyroscope signal.
