Modeling Coherence for Neural Machine Translation with Dynamic and Topic Caches

Sentences in a well-formed text are connected to each other via various links to form the cohesive structure of the text. Current neural machine translation (NMT) systems translate a text in a conventional sentence-by-sentence fashion, ignoring such cross-sentence links and dependencies. This may lead to generate an incoherent target text for a coherent source text. In order to handle this issue, we propose a cache-based approach to modeling coherence for neural machine translation by capturing contextual information either from recently translated sentences or the entire document. Particularly, we explore two types of caches: a dynamic cache, which stores words from the best translation hypotheses of preceding sentences, and a topic cache, which maintains a set of target-side topical words that are semantically related to the document to be translated. On this basis, we build a new layer to score target words in these two caches with a cache-based neural model. Here the estimated probabilities from the cache-based neural model are combined with NMT probabilities into the final word prediction probabilities via a gating mechanism. Finally, the proposed cache-based neural model is trained jointly with NMT system in an end-to-end manner. Experiments and analysis presented in this paper demonstrate that the proposed cache-based model achieves substantial improvements over several state-of-the-art SMT and NMT baselines.

Verdier quotients of homotopy categories

We study Verdier quotients of diverse homotopy categories of a full additive subcategory $\mathcal E$ of an abelian category. In particular, we consider the categories $K^{x,y}({\mathcal E})$ for $x\in\{\infty, +,-,b\}$, and $y\in\{\emptyset,b,+,-,\infty\}$ the homotopy categories of left, right, unbounded complexes with homology being $0$, bounded, left or right bounded, or unbounded. Inclusion of these categories give a partially ordered set, and we study localisation sequences or recollement diagrams between the Verdier quotients, and prove that many quotients lead to equivalent categories.

Gorenstein projective bimodules via monomorphism categories and filtration categories

We generalize the monomorphism category from quiver (with monomial relations) to arbitrary finite dimensional algebras by a homological definition. Given two finite dimension algebras $A$ and $B$, we use the special monomorphism category Mon(B, A-Gproj) to describe some Gorenstein projective bimodules over the tensor product of $A$ and $B$. If one of the two algebras is Gorenstein, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for Mon(B, A-Gproj) being the category of all Gorenstein projective bimodules. In addition, If both $A$ and $B$ are Gorenstein, we can describe the category of all Gorenstein projective bimodules via filtration categories. Similarly, in this case, we get the same result for infinitely generated Gorenstein projective bimodules.

Modeling Source Syntax for Neural Machine Translation

Even though a linguistics-free sequence to sequence model in neural machine translation (NMT) has certain capability of implicitly learning syntactic information of source sentences, this paper shows that source syntax can be explicitly incorporated into NMT effectively to provide further improvements. Specifically, we linearize parse trees of source sentences to obtain structural label sequences. On the basis, we propose three different sorts of encoders to incorporate source syntax into NMT: 1) Parallel RNN encoder that learns word and label annotation vectors parallelly; 2) Hierarchical RNN encoder that learns word and label annotation vectors in a two-level hierarchy; and 3) Mixed RNN encoder that stitchingly learns word and label annotation vectors over sequences where words and labels are mixed. Experimentation on Chinese-to-English translation demonstrates that all the three proposed syntactic encoders are able to improve translation accuracy. It is interesting to note that the simplest RNN encoder, i.e., Mixed RNN encoder yields the best performance with an significant improvement of 1.4 BLEU points. Moreover, an in-depth analysis from several perspectives is provided to reveal how source syntax benefits NMT.

Unbounded ladders induced by Gorenstein algebras

The derived category $D({\rm Mod}A)$ of a Gorenstein triangular matrix algebra $A$ admits an unbounded ladder; and this ladder restricts to $D^-({\rm Mod})$ {\rm(}resp. $D^b({\rm Mod})$, $D^b({\rm mod})$, $K^b({\rm proj})${\rm)}. A left recollement of triangulated categories with Serre functors sits in a ladder of period $1$; as an application, the singularity category of $A$ admits a ladder of period $1$.

The Gorenstein-projective modules over a monomial algebra

We classify indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective modules over a monomial algebra via the notion of perfect paths. We apply this classification to a quadratic monomial algebra and describe explicitly the stable category of its Gorenstein-projective modules.

The Hochschild cohomology ring of a Frobenius algebra with semisimple Nakayama automorphism is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra

Analogous to a recent result of N. Kowalzig and U. Krähmer for twisted Calabi-Yau algebras, we show that the Hochschild cohomology ring of a Frobenius algebra with semisimple Nakayama automorphism is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra, thus generalizing a result of T.Tradler for finite dimensional symmetric algebras. We give a criterion to determine when a Frobenius algebra given by quiver with relations has semisimple Nakayama automorphism and apply it to some known classes of tame Frobenius algebras. We also provide ample examples including quantum complete intersections, finite dimensional Hopf algebras defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and Koszul duals of Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebras of dimension three.

Gerstenhaber brackets on Hochschild cohomology of quantum symmetric algebras and their group extensions

We construct chain maps between the bar and Koszul resolutions for a quantum symmetric algebra (skew polynomial ring). This construction uses a recursive technique involving explicit formulae for contracting homotopies. We use these chain maps to compute the Gerstenhaber bracket, obtaining a quantum version of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket on a symmetric algebra (polynomial ring). We compute brackets also in some cases for skew group algebras arising as group extensions of quantum symmetric algebras.

On singular equivalences of Morita type

Stable equivalences of Morita type preserve many interesting properties and is proved to be the appropriate concept to study for equivalences between stable categories. Recently the singularity category attained much attraction and Xiao-Wu Chen and Long-Gang Sun gave an appropriate definition of singular equivalence of Morita type. We shall show that under some conditions singular equivalences of Morita type have some biadjoint functor properties and preserve positive degree Hochschild homology.

Auslander-Reiten conjecture for symmetric algebras of polynomial growth

This paper studies self-injective algebras of polynomial growth. We prove that the derived equivalence classification of weakly symmetric algebras of domestic type coincides with the classification up to stable equivalences (of Morita type). As for weakly symmetric non-domestic algebras of polynomial growth, up to some scalar problems, the derived equivalence classification coincides with the classification up to stable equivalences of Morita type. As a consequence, we get the validity of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for stable equivalences of Morita type between weakly symmetric algebras of polynomial growth.

Kuelshammer ideals and the scalar problem for blocks with dihedral defect groups

In by now classical work, K. Erdmann classified blocks of finite groups with dihedral defect groups (and more generally algebras of dihedral type) up to Morita equivalence. In the explicit description by quivers and relations of such algebras with two simple modules, several subtle problems about scalars occurring in relations remained unresolved. In particular, for the dihedral case it is a longstanding open question whether blocks of finite groups can occur for both possible scalars 0 and 1. In this article, using Kuelshammer ideals (a.k.a. generalized Reynolds ideals), we provide the first examples of blocks where the scalar is 1, thus answering the above question to the affirmative. Our examples are the principal blocks of PGL_2(F_q), the projective general linear group of 2x2-matrices with entries in the finite field F_q, where q=p^n\equiv \pm 1 mod 8, with p an odd prime number.

On the Vertices of Indecomposable Modules Over Dihedral 2-Groups

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. We compute the vertices of all indecomposable $kD_8$-modules for the dihedral group $D_8$ of order 8. We also give a conjectural formula of the induced module of a string module from $kT_0$ to $kG$ where $G$ is a dihedral group of order $\geq 8$ and where $T_0$ is a dihedral subgroup of index 2 of $G$. Some cases where we verified this formula are given.
