Maximal volume entropy rigidity for $\mathsf{RCD}^*(-(N-1),N)$ spaces

For $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $M$ with Ricci curvature bounded below by $-(n-1)$, the volume entropy is bounded above by $n-1$. If $M$ is compact, it is known that the equality holds if and only if $M$ is hyperbolic. We extend this result to $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}(-(N-1),N)$ spaces. While the upper bound is straightforward, the rigidity case is quite involved due to the lack of a smooth structure in $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}$ spaces. As an application we obtain an almost rigidity result which partially recovers a result by Cheng-Rong-Xu for Riemannian manifolds.

Fundamental gaps of spherical triangles

We compute Dirichlet eigenvalues and eigenfunctions explicitly for spherical lunes and the spherical triangles which are half the lunes, and show that the fundamental gap goes to infinity when the angle of the lune goes to zero. Then we show the spherical equilateral triangle of diameter $\fracπ{2}$ is a strict local minimizer of the fundamental gap on the space of the spherical triangles with diameter $\fracπ{2}$, which partially extends Lu-Rowlett's result from the plane to the sphere.

Eigenvalue estimates for Kato-type Ricci curvature conditions

We prove that optimal lower eigenvalue estimates of Zhong-Yang type as well as a Cheng-type upper bound for the first eigenvalue hold on closed manifolds assuming only a Kato condition on the negative part of the Ricci curvature. This generalizes all earlier results on $L^p$-curvature assumptions. Moreover, we introduce the Kato condition on compact manifolds with boundary with respect to the Neumann Laplacian, leading to Harnack estimates for the Neumann heat kernel and lower bounds for all Neumann eigenvalues, what provides a first insight in handling variable Ricci curvature assumptions in this case.

Ancient solutions for flow by powers of the curvature in $\mathbb R^2$

We construct a new compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ that lies between two parallel lines. Using this solution we classify all convex ancient solutions of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, for $α\in(\frac23,1)$. Moreover, we show that any non-compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ must be a translating solution.

Explicit fundamental gap estimates for some convex domains in $\mathbb H^2$

Motivated by an example of Shih, we compute the fundamental gap of a family of convex domains in the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2$, showing that for some of them $λ_2 - λ_1 < \frac{3π^2}{D^2}$, where $D$ is the diameter of the domain and $λ_1$, $λ_2$ are the first and second Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on the domain. The result contrasts with what is known in $\mathbb R^n $ or $\mathbb S^n$, where $λ_2 - λ_1 \geq \frac{3 π^2}{D^2}$ for convex domains. We also show that the fundamental gap of the example in Shih's article is still greater than $\tfrac 32 \frac{π^2}{D^2}$, even though the first eigenfunction of the Laplace operator is not log-concave.

On the volume of orbifold quotients of symmetric spaces

A classic theorem of Kazhdan and Margulis states that for any semisimple Lie group without compact factors, there is a positive lower bound on the covolume of lattices. H. C. Wang's subsequent quantitative analysis showed that the fundamental domain of any lattice contains a ball whose radius depends only on the group itself. A direct consequence is a positive minimum volume for orbifolds modeled on the corresponding symmetric space. However, sharp bounds are known only for hyperbolic orbifolds of dimensions two and three, and recently for quaternionic hyperbolic orbifolds of all dimensions. As in arXiv:0911.4712 and arXiv:1205.2011, this article combines H. C. Wang's radius estimate with an improved upper sectional curvature bound for a canonical left-invariant metric on a real semisimple Lie group and uses Gunther's volume comparison theorem to deduce an explicit uniform lower volume bound for arbitrary orbifold quotients of a given irreducible symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The numerical bound for the octonionic hyperbolic plane is the first such bound to be given. For (real) hyperbolic orbifolds of dimension greater than three, the bounds are an improvement over what was previously known.

Reilly-type inequalities for $p$-Laplacian on submanifolds in space forms

Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional closed orientable submanifold in an $N$-dimensional space form. When $1<p \le \frac n2 + 1$, we obtain an upper bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian in terms of the mean curvature of $M$ and the curvature of the space form. This generalizes the Reilly inequality for the Laplacian [9, 15] to the $p$-Laplacian and extends the work of [8] for the $p$-Laplacian.

Fundamental gap estimate for convex domains on sphere -- the case $n=2$

In [SWW16, HW17] it is shown that the difference of the first two eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary condition on convex domain with diameter $D$ of sphere $\mathbb S^n$ is $\geq 3 \frac{π^2}{D^2}$ when $n \geq 3$. We prove the same result when $n=2$. In fact our proof works for all dimension. We also give an asymptotic expansion of the first and second Dirichlet eigenvalues of the model in [SWW16].

Rigidity of minimal submanifolds in space forms

In this paper, we consider the rigidity for an $n(\geq 4)$-dimensional submanfolds $M^n$ with parallel mean curvature in the space form ${\mathbb M}^{n+p}_c$ when the integral Ricci curvature of $M$ has some bound. We prove that, if $c+H^2>0$ and $\|\mathrm{Ric}_{-}^λ\|_{n/2}< ε(n,c, λ, H)$ for $λ$ satisfying $ \frac{n-2}{n-1} (c+H^2) < λ\le c+H^2$, then $M$ is the totally umbilical sphere $\mathbb{S}^n(\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$. Here $H$ is the norm of the parallel mean curvature of $M$, and $ε(n,c,λ, H)$ is a positive constant depending only on $n, c,λ$ and $H$. This extends some of the earlier work of [15] from pointwise Ricci curvature lower bound to inetgral Ricci curvature lower bound.

Local Sobolev Constant Estimate for Integral Ricci Curvature Bounds

We obtain a local Sobolev constant estimate for integral Ricci curvature, which enables us to extend several important tools such as the maximal principle, the gradient estimate, the heat kernel estimate and the $L^2$ Hessian estimate to manifolds with integral Ricci lower bounds, without the non-collapsing conditions.

Fundamental Gap of Convex Domains in the Spheres (with Appendix B by Qi S. Zhang)

In [SWW], S. Seto, L. Wang and G. Wei proved that the gap between the first two Dirichlet eigenvalues of a convex domain in the unit sphere is at least as large as that for an associated operator on an interval with the same diameter, provided that the domain has the diameter at most $π/2$. In this paper, we extend Seto-Wang-Wei's result to convex domains in the unit sphere with diameter less than $π$.

Sharp Fundamental Gap Estimate on Convex Domains of Sphere

In their celebrated work, B. Andrews and J. Clutterbuck proved the fundamental gap (the difference between the first two eigenvalues) conjecture for convex domains in the Euclidean space and conjectured similar results holds for spaces with constant sectional curvature. We prove the conjecture for the sphere. Namely when $D$, the diameter of a convex domain in the unit $S^n$ sphere, is $\le \fracπ{2}$, the gap is greater than the gap of the corresponding $1$-dim sphere model. We also prove the gap is $\ge 3\frac{π^2}{D^2}$ when $n \ge 3$, giving a sharp bound. As in Andrews-Clutterbuck's proof of the fundamental gap, the key is to prove a super log-concavity of the first eigenfunction.

On the universal cover and the fundamental group of an $RCD^*(K,N)$-space

The main goal of the paper is to prove the existence of the universal cover for $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces. This generalizes earlier work of C. Sormani and the second named author on the existence of universal covers for Ricci limit spaces. As a result, we also obtain several structure results on the (revised) fundamental group of such spaces. These are the first topological results for $RCD^{*}(K,N)$-spaces without extra structural-topological assumptions (such as semi-local simple connectedness).
