Networked control systems: a perspective from chaos

In this paper, a nonlinear system aiming at reducing the signal transmission rate in a networked control system is constructed by adding nonlinear constraints to a linear feedback control system. Its stability is investigated in detail. It turns out that this nonlinear system exhibits very interesting dynamical behaviors: in addition to local stability, its trajectories may converge to a non-origin equilibrium or be periodic or just be oscillatory. Furthermore it exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions --- a sign of chaos. Complicated bifurcation phenomena are exhibited by this system. After that, control of the chaotic system is discussed. All these are studied under scalar cases in detail. Some difficulties involved in the study of this type of systems are analyzed. Finally an example is employed to reveal the effectiveness of the scheme in the framework of networked control systems.

Analysis of Quantum Linear Systems' Response to Multi-photon States

The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical framework for analyzing the response of quantum linear systems driven by multi-photon states. Both the factorizable (namely, no correlation among the photons in the channel) and unfactorizable multi-photon states are treated. Pulse information of multi-photon input state is encoded in terms of tensor, and response of quantum linear systems to multi-photon input states is characterized by tensor operations. Analytic forms of output correlation functions and output states are derived. The proposed framework is applicable no matter whether the underlying quantum dynamic system is passive or active. The results presented here generalize those in the single-photon setting studied in (Milburn, 2008) and (Zhang and James, 2013}). Moreover, interesting multi-photon interference phenomena studied in (Sanaka, Resch, and Zeilinger, 2006), (Ou, 2007), and (Bartley, et al., 2012) can be reproduced in the proposed framework

Quantum Feedback Networks and Control: A Brief Survey

The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief review of some recent developments in quantum feedback networks and control. A quantum feedback network (QFN) is an interconnected system consisting of open quantum systems linked by free fields and/or direct physical couplings. Basic network constructs, including series connections as well as feedback loops, are discussed. The quantum feedback network theory provides a natural framework for analysis and design. Basic properties such as dissipation, stability, passivity and gain of open quantum systems are discussed. Control system design is also discussed, primarily in the context of open linear quantum stochastic systems. The issue of physical realizability is discussed, and explicit criteria for stability, positive real lemma, and bounded real lemma are presented. Finally for linear quantum systems, coherent $H^\infty$ and LQG control are described.

Quantum Optical Realization of Classical Linear Stochastic Systems

The purpose of this paper is to show how a class of classical linear stochastic systems can be physically implemented using quantum optical components. Quantum optical systems typically have much higher bandwidth than electronic devices, meaning faster response and processing times, and hence has the potential for providing better performance than classical systems. A procedure is provided for constructing the quantum optical realization. The paper also describes the use of the quantum optical realization in a measurement feedback loop. Some examples are given to illustrate the application of the main results.

On the response of quantum linear systems to single photon input fields

The purpose of this paper is to extend linear systems and signals theory to include single photon quantum signals. We provide detailed results describing how quantum linear systems respond to multichannel single photon quantum signals. In particular, we characterize the class of states (which we call {\em photon-Gaussian} states) that result when multichannel photons are input to a quantum linear system. We show that this class of quantum states is preserved by quantum linear systems. Multichannel photon-Gaussian states are defined via the action of certain creation and annihilation operators on Gaussian states. Our results show how the output states are determined from the input states through a pair of transfer function relations. We also provide equations from which output signal intensities can be computed. Examples from quantum optics are provided to illustrate the results.

Coherent Feedback Control of Linear Quantum Optical Systems via Squeezing and Phase Shift

The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretic and numerical study of utilizing squeezing and phase shift in coherent feedback control of linear quantum optical systems. A quadrature representation with built-in phase shifters is proposed for such systems. Fundamental structural characterizations of linear quantum optical systems are derived in terms of the new quadrature representation. These results reveal considerable insights of issue of physical realizability of such quantum systems. The problem of coherent quantum LQG feedback control studied in [35,50] is re-investigated in depth. Firstly, the optimization methods in [35,50] are extended to a multi-step optimization algorithm which utilizes ideal squeezers. Secondly, a two-stage optimization approach is proposed on the basis of controller parametrization. Numerical studies show that closed-loop systems designed via the second approach may offer LQG control performance even better than that when the closed-loop systems are in the vacuum state. When ideal squeezers in a close-loop system are replaced by (more realistic) degenerate parametric amplifiers, a sufficient condition is derived for the asymptotic stability of the resultant new closed-loop system; the issue of performance convergence is also discussed in the LQG control setting.

Geometric measure of entanglement of multipartite mixed states

The geometric measure of entanglement of a pure state, defined by its distance to the set of pure separable states, is extended to multipartite mixed states. We characterize the nearest disentangled mixed state to a given mixed state with respect to this measure by a system of equations. The entanglement eigenvalue for a mixed state is introduced. For a given mixed state, we show that its nearest disentangled mixed state is associated with its entanglement eigenvalue.

The geometric measure of entanglement of pure states with nonnegative amplitudes and the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors

The geometric measure of entanglement for a symmetric pure state with nonnegative amplitudes has attracted much attention. On the other hand, the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors (hypermatrices) has been developed rapidly. In this paper, we show how the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors can be applied to the study of the geometric measure of entanglement for a pure state with nonnegative amplitudes. Especially, an elimination method for computing the geometric measure of entanglement for symmetric pure multipartite qubit or qutrit states with nonnegative amplitudes is given. For symmetric pure multipartite qudit states with nonnegative amplitudes, a numerical algorithm with randomization is presented and proven to be convergent. We show that for the geometric measure of entanglement for pure states with nonnegative amplitudes, the nonsymmetric ones can be converted to the symmetric ones.

Direct and Indirect Couplings in Coherent Feedback Control of Linear Quantum Systems

The purpose of this paper is to study and design direct and indirect couplings for use in coherent feedback control of a class of linear quantum stochastic systems. A general physical model for a nominal linear quantum system coupled directly and indirectly to external systems is presented. Fundamental properties of stability, dissipation, passivity, and gain for this class of linear quantum models are presented and characterized using complex Lyapunov equations and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Coherent $H^\infty$ and LQG synthesis methods are extended to accommodate direct couplings using multistep optimization. Examples are given to illustrate the results.

Single-molecule interfacial electron transfer dynamics manipulated by external electric current

Interfacial electron transfer (IET) dynamics in 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3, 3, 3', 3'-tetramethylindodicarbocyanine (DiD) dye molecules / indium tin oxide (ITO) film system have been probed at the ensemble and single-molecule level by recording the change of fluorescence emission intensity. By comparing the difference of the external electric current (EEC) dependence of lifetime and intensity for enambles and single molecules, it is shown that the single-molecule probe can effcienly demonstrate the IET dynamics. The backward electron transfer and electron transfer of ground state induce the single molecules fluorescence quenching when an EEC is applied to ITO film.

Quantum teleportation via a two-qubit Heisenberg XXZ chain-effects of anisotropy and magnetic field

We study quantum teleportation via a two-qubit Heisenberg XXZ chain under an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We first consider entanglement teleportation, and then focus on the teleportation fidelity under different conditions. The effects of anisotropy and the magnetic field, both uniform and inhomogeneous, are discussed. We also find that, though entanglement teleportation does require an entangled quantum channel, a nonzero critical value of minimum entanglement is not always necessary.

Fast recognition of single molecules based on single event photon statistics

Mandel Q-parameter, which is determined from single event photon statistics, provides an alternative to differentiate single-molecule with fluorescence detection. In this work, by using the Q-parameter of the sample fluorescence compared to that of an ideal double-molecule system with the same average photon number, we present a novel and fast approach for identifying single molecules based on single event photon statistics analyses, compared with commonly used two-time correlation measurements. The error estimates for critical values of photon statistics are also presented for single-molecule determination.
