Segment-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides for broadband supercontinuum generation

Supercontinuum generation is a key technology in nonlinear optics, supporting a wide range of applications in frequency metrology and spectroscopy. Integrated photonics offers a promising route toward compact and efficient supercontinuum sources, yet extending the bandwidth while maintaining high spectral flatness remains a central challenge. Here we demonstrate an integrated broadband supercontinuum source based on segment-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate (SC-PPLN) nanophotonic waveguides. By discretizing the chirped poling profile into independently optimized segments, this approach enables high-fidelity ferroelectric domain inversion with near-ideal duty cycles and establishes broadband quasi-phase matching, overcoming the domain inhomogeneity and efficiency limitations commonly encountered in conventional chirped poling. The engineered phase-matching landscape supports efficient wavelength conversion and simultaneous activation of multiple second- and third-order nonlinear processes. Experimentally, we achieve a spectrally flat supercontinuum spanning three optical octaves, from 320 nm in the ultraviolet to 2600 nm in the mid-infrared. These results establish segment-chirped poling as a practical strategy for broadband wavelength conversion and supercontinuum generation in integrated photonics.

Ultrahigh-Q All-Metallic Metasurfaces with Robust Near-Perfect Absorption

High quality-factor (Q) resonant metasurfaces have attracted significant attention due to their potential applications in cutting-edge fields of optics. However, limited by intrinsic dissipation losses, achieving both an extremely high Q factor and perfect absorption for strong light-matter interaction control in plasmonic metasurface is still highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate a plasmonic metasurface composed of symmetric double-pillars (SDPs) on a gold film, in which the flexibly tuned geometric space enables precise control over the nonlocality of dark-mode Fabry-Perot bound states in the continuum (FP-BIC) and its coupling with Rayleigh anomaly (RA)-associated lattice resonance. Based on the coupling control between these two modes, the radiative and dissipative losses are well balanced, resulting in a measured Q factor of 2180 (theoretical 2800) and absorption nearly 99%. Notably, the near-perfect absorption response is maintained over broad geometric parameter windows of SDPs (height h=70-120nm, radius r=210-280nm), while the resonance retains a consistently high Q factor throughout these ranges. This hybrid coupling strategy establishes a general framework for designing high-Q, near-critical coupling plasmonic devices for ultrasensitive sensing, narrowband filtering, and active photonics.

Thorium doped strontium fluoride crystal: a unique candidate for solid nuclear optical clock material

We report a candidate with unique advantages in the cultivation of solid-state nuclear clock material, Th:SrF2 crystal. It not only has a segregation coefficient close to 1, which can achieve highly efficient and uniform doping of Th, but also ensures a high transmittance (~69% at 150 nm) while achieving extremely high doping concentration (232Th>6*10^20 cm^(-3). In addition, SrF2 crystal will not be irradiated-colored under strong {\alpha} radiation like CaF2 crystal, Th:SrF2 crystal is expected to fully unleash its high concentration doping characteristics while ensuring its transmission performance in nuclear transition band not be severely affected by 229Th radiation damage.
