TIPCB: A Simple but Effective Part-based Convolutional Baseline for Text-based Person Search

Text-based person search is a sub-task in the field of image retrieval, which aims to retrieve target person images according to a given textual description. The significant feature gap between two modalities makes this task very challenging. Many existing methods attempt to utilize local alignment to address this problem in the fine-grained level. However, most relevant methods introduce additional models or complicated training and evaluation strategies, which are hard to use in realistic scenarios. In order to facilitate the practical application, we propose a simple but effective end-to-end learning framework for text-based person search named TIPCB (i.e., Text-Image Part-based Convolutional Baseline). Firstly, a novel dual-path local alignment network structure is proposed to extract visual and textual local representations, in which images are segmented horizontally and texts are aligned adaptively. Then, we propose a multi-stage cross-modal matching strategy, which eliminates the modality gap from three feature levels, including low level, local level and global level. Extensive experiments are conducted on the widely-used benchmark dataset (CUHK-PEDES) and verify that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by 3.69%, 2.95% and 2.31% in terms of Top-1, Top-5 and Top-10. Our code has been released in https://github.com/OrangeYHChen/TIPCB.

Deep High-Resolution Representation Learning for Cross-Resolution Person Re-identification

Person re-identification (re-ID) tackles the problem of matching person images with the same identity from different cameras. In practical applications, due to the differences in camera performance and distance between cameras and persons of interest, captured person images usually have various resolutions. We name this problem as Cross-Resolution Person Re-identification which brings a great challenge for matching correctly. In this paper, we propose a Deep High-Resolution Pseudo-Siamese Framework (PS-HRNet) to solve the above problem. Specifically, in order to restore the resolution of low-resolution images and make reasonable use of different channel information of feature maps, we introduce and innovate VDSR module with channel attention (CA) mechanism, named as VDSR-CA. Then we reform the HRNet by designing a novel representation head to extract discriminating features, named as HRNet-ReID. In addition, a pseudo-siamese framework is constructed to reduce the difference of feature distributions between low-resolution images and high-resolution images. The experimental results on five cross-resolution person datasets verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our proposed PS-HRNet improves 3.4\%, 6.2\%, 2.5\%,1.1\% and 4.2\% at Rank-1 on MLR-Market-1501, MLR-CUHK03, MLR-VIPeR, MLR-DukeMTMC-reID, and CAVIAR datasets, respectively. Reference-Aided Part-Aligned Feature Disentangling for Video Person Re-Identification

Recently, video-based person re-identification (re-ID) has drawn increasing attention in compute vision community because of its practical application prospects. Due to the inaccurate person detections and pose changes, pedestrian misalignment significantly increases the difficulty of feature extraction and matching. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a \textbf{R}eference-\textbf{A}ided \textbf{P}art-\textbf{A}ligned (\textbf{RAPA}) framework to disentangle robust features of different parts. Firstly, in order to obtain better references between different videos, a pose-based reference feature learning module is introduced. Secondly, an effective relation-based part feature disentangling module is explored to align frames within each video. By means of using both modules, the informative parts of pedestrian in videos are well aligned and more discriminative feature representation is generated. Comprehensive experiments on three widely-used benchmarks, i.e. iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011 and MARS datasets verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Our code will be made publicly available.

Cascade Convolutional Neural Network for Image Super-Resolution

With the development of the super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN), deep learning technique has been widely applied in the field of image super-resolution. Previous works mainly focus on optimizing the structure of SRCNN, which have been achieved well performance in speed and restoration quality for image super-resolution. However, most of these approaches only consider a specific scale image during the training process, while ignoring the relationship between different scales of images. Motivated by this concern, in this paper, we propose a cascaded convolution neural network for image super-resolution (CSRCNN), which includes three cascaded Fast SRCNNs and each Fast SRCNN can process a specific scale image. Images of different scales can be trained simultaneously and the learned network can make full use of the information resided in different scales of images. Extensive experiments show that our network can achieve well performance for image SR.

On a class of quasilinear elliptic equation with indefinite weights on graphs

Suppose that $G=(V, E)$ is a connected locally finite graph with the vertex set $V$ and the edge set $E$. Let $Ω\subset V$ be a bounded domain. Consider the following quasilinear elliptic equation on graph $G$ $$ \left \{ \begin{array}{lcr} -Δ_{p}u= λK(x)|u|^{p-2}u+f(x,u), \ \ x\inΩ^{\circ}, u=0, \ \ x\in\partial Ω, \\ \end{array} \right. $$ where $Ω^{\circ}$ and $\partial Ω$ denote the interior and the boundary of $Ω$ respectively, $Δ_{p}$ is the discrete $p$-Laplacian, $K(x)$ is a given function which may change sign, $λ$ is the eigenvalue parameter and $f(x,u)$ has exponential growth. We prove the existence and monotonicity of the principal eigenvalue of the corresponding eigenvalue problem. Furthermore, we also obtain the existence of a positive solution by using variational methods.

StaticGreedy: solving the scalability-accuracy dilemma in influence maximization

Influence maximization, defined as a problem of finding a set of seed nodes to trigger a maximized spread of influence, is crucial to viral marketing on social networks. For practical viral marketing on large scale social networks, it is required that influence maximization algorithms should have both guaranteed accuracy and high scalability. However, existing algorithms suffer a scalability-accuracy dilemma: conventional greedy algorithms guarantee the accuracy with expensive computation, while the scalable heuristic algorithms suffer from unstable accuracy. In this paper, we focus on solving this scalability-accuracy dilemma. We point out that the essential reason of the dilemma is the surprising fact that the submodularity, a key requirement of the objective function for a greedy algorithm to approximate the optimum, is not guaranteed in all conventional greedy algorithms in the literature of influence maximization. Therefore a greedy algorithm has to afford a huge number of Monte Carlo simulations to reduce the pain caused by unguaranteed submodularity. Motivated by this critical finding, we propose a static greedy algorithm, named StaticGreedy, to strictly guarantee the submodularity of influence spread function during the seed selection process. The proposed algorithm makes the computational expense dramatically reduced by two orders of magnitude without loss of accuracy. Moreover, we propose a dynamical update strategy which can speed up the StaticGreedy algorithm by 2-7 times on large scale social networks.

LANC: locality-aware network coding for better P2P traffic localization

As ISPs begin to cooperate to expose their network locality information as services, e.g., P4P, solutions based on locality information provision for P2P traffic localization will soon approach their capability limits. A natural question is: can we do any better provided that no further locality information improvement can be made? This paper shows how the utility of locality information could be limited by conventional P2P data scheduling algorithms, even as sophisticated as the local rarest first policy. Network coding's simplified data scheduling makes it competent for improving P2P application's throughput. Instead of only using locality information in the topology construction, this paper proposes the locality-aware network coding (LANC) that uses locality information in both the topology construction and downloading decision, and demonstrates its exceptional ability for P2P traffic localization. The randomization introduced by network coding enhances the chance for a peer to find innovative blocks in its neighborhood. Aided by proper locality-awareness, the probability for a peer to get innovative blocks from its proximity will increase as well, resulting in more efficient use of network resources. Extensive simulation results show that LANC can significantly reduce P2P traffic redundancy without sacrificing application-level performance. Aided by the same locality knowledge, the traffic redundancies of LANC in most cases are less than 50\% of the current best approach that does not use network coding.

Enhancing network transmission capacity by efficiently allocating node capability

A network's transmission capacity is the maximal rate of traffic inflow that the network can handle without causing congestion. Here we study how to enhance this quantity by redistributing the capability of individual nodes while preserving the total sum of node capability. We propose a practical and effective node-capability allocation scheme which allocates a node's capability based on the local knowledge of the node's connectivity. We show the scheme enhances the transmission capacity by two orders of magnitude for networks with heterogenous structures.
