Star Formation Evolution in Galaxy Pairs: Constraints from Morphological Disturbances and Recent Star Formation Histories

Galaxy interactions can enhance star formation, but how star formation evolves during galaxy interactions remains poorly constrained by observations. We combine pair separation, morphological disturbance, and recent star formation history to study this evolution. We measure morphological disturbance with the shape asymmetry parameter ($A_{\rm shape}$) using deep images from the DESI Legacy Surveys, and use Galaxy Zoo DESI classifications as an independent test. We infer recent star formation histories by comparing SFR and $\mathrm{EW}(\mathrm{H}\alpha)$, which trace current star formation, with $\mathrm{EW}(\mathrm{H}\delta_A)$ and $D_n4000$, which are sensitive to stellar populations formed over longer timescales. At small projected separations, strongly disturbed galaxies show the strongest enhancements in SFR and $\mathrm{EW}(\mathrm{H}\alpha)$, indicating that close encounters trigger strong star formation. At intermediate separations ($d_{\rm p}\sim100\,\mathrm{kpc}$), their current star formation is only moderately enhanced, but their $\mathrm{EW}(\mathrm{H}\delta_A)$ enhancement is the strongest. This indicates a larger contribution from intermediate-age stars formed during stronger star formation in the past $\sim0.1$--$1\,\mathrm{Gyr}$. The TNG100 analysis shows that this pattern results from rapid changes in SFR around close passage. SFR rises sharply during the encounter and declines as the galaxies move apart, while tidal disturbances remain visible. As short-lived massive stars disappear and intermediate-age A-type stars begin to dominate the spectrum, the $\mathrm{EW}(\mathrm{H}\delta_A)$ enhancement peaks later than the SFR enhancement. Our results provide important observational evidence for the evolution of SFR along the merger sequence.

Investigation of projected rotational velocities of Be-type stars in LAMOST DR7

Stellar rotation plays a key role in the transfer of angular momentum, and a large sample of Be-type stars with reliable projected rotational velocities is crucial for understanding their formation and evolution. In this work, we derive the projected rotational velocities ($v$\,sin\,$i$) of 479 Be-type stars using the Fourier transform method, based on their LAMOST Medium-resolution Survey (MRS) spectra. Our results suggest that the Fourier transform method can provide reliable $v$\,sin\,$i$ values for Be-type stars by analyzing the \ion{He}{1}\,lines at 4922, 5015, 5047, and 6678 \,\AA in their LAMOST MRS spectra. A K-S test indicates that Be-type stars with different H$\alpha$ emission line morphologies exhibit different $v$\,sin\,$i$ distributions, and Be-type stars with double-peaked emission have a higher fraction of rapid rotators than those with single-peak emission. The $v$\,sin\,$i$ distributions of our Be-type stars in the field, OB associations, and clusters show no significant differences. The deconvolved $v$\,sin\,$i$ distribution of our entire Be-type star sample does not exhibit a bimodal distribution but rather a single peak at $v\approx260$\,km$\cdot$s$^{-1}$. Based on the analysis of 105 stars in our sample, we find that the mean equatorial rotational velocity is 0.74 times the critical velocity. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between $v$\,sin\,$i$ and the H$\alpha$ peak separation velocity for Be-type stars exhibiting double-peak H$\alpha$ emission lines, using Pearson and Spearman rank correlation coefficients.

Radial Distributions of Star Formation and Gas-phase Metallicity in Spiral-Elliptical Galaxy Pairs

Using integral field spectroscopy from SDSS-IV MaNGA, we investigate the radial distributions of star formation rate (SFR) and gas-phase metallicity in spiral galaxies that reside in spiral-elliptical (S+E) pairs. Spirals in S+E pairs show suppressed central star formation and elevated metallicities, whereas spirals in spiral-spiral pairs exhibit centrally enhanced star formation and reduced metallicities. The degree of SFR suppression and metallicity enhancement in S+E pairs depends on the masses of the pair members. Spirals with more massive elliptical companions experience stronger star-formation suppression and larger increases in metallicity, while lower-mass spirals show more pronounced metallicity enhancement. In addition, within S+E systems, galaxies with asymmetric gas velocity fields display enhanced SFR and higher metallicities, whereas those with symmetric velocity fields exhibit clear central suppression. Based on these results, we infer that in S+E pairs, the spiral galaxy experiences suppressed gas accretion once it enters the hot circumgalactic medium of its early-type companion, which leads to the observed decline in star-formation activity. When a close encounter takes place, tidal perturbations can compress the remaining cold gas and trigger enhanced star formation, producing rapid chemical enrichment and the associated increase in metallicity.

Identification of OB associations using the LAMOST-Gaia OB star sample

OB associations, as an intermediate stage between Galactic clusters and field stars, play an important role in understanding the star formation process, early stellar evolution, and Galactic evolution. In this work, we construct a large sample of OB stars with 6D phase space parameters ($l, b, d, V_{\rm los}, pmra ,pmdec$) by combining the distances from Bailer-Jones et al. (2021), radial velocities derived from low-resolution spectra of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), and proper motions from the \textit{Gaia} Data Release 3 (DR3). This sample includes 19,933 OB stars, most of which are located within 6\,kpc of the Sun. Using 6D phase space parameters and friends-of-friends clustering algorithm, we identify 67 OB associations and 112 OB association candidates, among them, 49 OB associations and 107 OB association candidates are newly identified. The Galactic rotation curve derived using 67 OB association members is relatively flat in the range of Galactocentric distances 7$<$$R$$<$13\,kpc. The angular rotation velocity at solar Galactocentric distance of $R_\odot$ =8.34\,kpc is $\Omega_0$ = 29.05$\pm$0.55\,km\,s$^{-1}$\,kpc$^{-1}$. The spatial distribution of the 67 OB associations indicates that they are mainly located at low Galactic latitudes and near spiral arms of the Milky Way. Additionally, we estimate the velocity dispersions and sizes of these 67 OB associations. Our results show that the velocity dispersions decrease as Galactocentric distances increase, while their sizes increase as Galactocentric distances increase.

Identification of BHB stars using Synthetic SkyMapper colors from Gaia XP spectra

Blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars are ideal tracers for mapping the structure of Galactic stellar halo. Traditionally, BHB sample stars are built from large-scale spectroscopic surveys utilizing their spectral features, however, the resulting sample sizes have been quite limited. In this paper, we construct a catalog of BHB stars based on synthetic colors $(u-v)_{0}$ and $(g-i)_{0}$ in SkyMapper photometric systems, which are convolved from Gaia XP spectra. A total of 49,733 BHB stars are selected from nearly the entire sky (excluding regions of low Galactic latitudes $|b| \le 8^{\circ}$ with heavy reddening), with a completeness and purity exceeding 90\%. Using member stars of globular clusters with precise distance determinations, we carefully calibrate the relationship between the $g$-band absolute magnitude and $(g-i)_{0}$, achieving a precision of 0.11\,mag, which corresponds to a 5\% uncertainty in distance. This relation is applied to derive distances for all BHB stars in the constructed sample. Given current capabilities of Gaia XP observations, the constructed BHB sample is primarily located within 20 kpc, enabling detailed mapping of the inner stellar halo. To extend this depth to the outer halo or even the edge of our Galaxy, we explore the potential of the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) and its broad-band photometry for detecting BHB stars. Using mock data from synthetic spectra, we find that it is feasible to distinguish BHB stars from blue stragglers (BS) stars using CSST near-ultraviolet bands ($NUV, u$) photometry. Thanks to the deep limiting magnitude of CSST, its data will provide a groundbreaking perspective on our Galaxy, particularly regarding the outer halo, in an unprecedented volume.

Investigating lower limit of metallicity for Galactic thin disk

We explore the metal-poor regime of the Galactic disk on the distribution of stars in the [$\alpha$/M]-$V_{\phi}$ plane, to identify the most metal-poor thin disk (MPTnD) stars belonging to the low-$\alpha$ sequence. Chemical abundances and velocities of sample stars are either taken or derived from APOGEE DR17 and Gaia DR3 catalogs. We find the existence of a well-separated extension of the kinematically thin disk stars in the metallicity range of -1.2 $<$[M/H]$<$ -0.8 dex. Based on two-by-two distributions of [Mg/Mn], [Al/Fe] and [C+N/Fe], we further confirmed 56 high-possibility metal-poor thin disk (HP-MPTnD) giant stars and suggested the lower metallicity limit of the thin disk below -0.95 dex. A comparative analysis of HP-MPTnD sample with other Galactic components revealed its chemo-dynamical similarities with canonical thin disk stars. These low-$\alpha$ metal-poor stars are predominantly located in the outer disk region and formed in the early stage of the formation of thin disk. Their existence provides compelling support for the two-infall model of the Milky way's disk formation. Moreover, these stars impose observational constraints on the timing and metallicity of the second gas infall event.

Diffuse Ionized Gas in the Anti-center of the Milky Way

Using data from the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey of Nebulae, we create a sample of 17,821 diffuse ionized gas (DIG) spectra in the anti-center region of the Milky Way, by excluding fibers in the directions of H II regions and supernova remnants. We then analyze the radial and vertical distributions of three line ratios ([N II]/H$\alpha$, [S II]/H$\alpha$, and [S II]/[N II]), as well as the oxygen abundance. [N II]/H$\alpha$ and [S II]/H$\alpha$ do not exhibit a consistent, monotonic decrease with increasing Galactocentric distance (R$_{gal}$). Instead, they show enhancement within the interarm region, positioned between the Local Arm and the Perseus Arm. [S II]/[N II] has a radial gradient of 0.1415 $\pm$ 0.0646 kpc$^{-1}$ for the inner disk (8.34 $ < R_{gal} < $ 9.65 kpc), and remains nearly flat for the outer disk ($R_{gal} > $ 9.65 kpc). In the vertical direction, [N II]/H$\alpha$, [S II]/H$\alpha$, and [S II]/[N II] increase with increasing Galactic disk height ($|z|$) in both southern and northern disks. Based on the N2S2H$\alpha$ method, which combines [S II]/[N II] and [N II]/H$\alpha$, we estimate the oxygen abundance. The oxygen abundance exhibits a consistent radial gradient with R$_{gal}$, featuring a slope of -0.0559 $\pm$ 0.0209 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the inner disk and a similar slope of -0.0429 $\pm$ 0.0599 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the outer disk. A single linear fitting to the entire disk yields a slope of -0.0317 $\pm$ 0.0124 dex kpc$^{-1}$. In the vertical direction, the oxygen abundance decreases with increasing $|z|$ in both southern and northern disks.

The Value-added Catalog of OB Stars in LAMOST DR7

In this work, we update the catalog of OB stars based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) data release 7 and modified the OB stars selection criterion the spectral line indices space. The new catalog includes 37,778 spectra of 27,643 OB stars, of which 3827 OB stars are newly identified. The spectral subclasses of 27,643 OB stars are obtained using the automatic classification code MKCLASS. We find that the modified OB star selection criteria can better improve the completeness of late B-type stars by analyzing their spectral classification results given by MKCLASS. We also identify 3006 Be-type stars or candidates by examining the Balmer lines in their spectra and find that the frequency of our Be-type stars (10.9\%) is consistent with previous results. The spatial distribution of OB stars indicates that they are mainly located in the Galactic disk. This new catalog of OB stars will provide valuable data for studying the structure and evolution of the Milky Way.

Angular momentum variation of the Milky Way thick disk: The dependence of chemical abundance and the evidence on inside-out formation scenario

We investigate the angular momentum of mono-abundance populations (MAPs) of the Milky Way thick disk by using a sample of 26,076 giant stars taken from APOGEE DR17 and Gaia EDR3. The vertical and perpendicular angular momentum components, $L_Z$ and $L_P$, of MAPs in narrow bins have significant variations across the [$α$/M]-[M/H] plane. $L_Z$ and $L_P$ systematically change with [M/H] and [$α$/M] and can be alternatively quantified by the chemical gradients: $d[{\rm M/H}]/dL_Z = 1.2\times 10^{-3} $\,dex\,kpc$^{-1}$\,km$^{-1}$\,s, $d{\rm [M/H]}/dL_P = -5.0\times 10^{-3}$\,dec\,kpc$^{-1}$\,km$^{-1}$\,s, and $d[α/{\rm M}]/dL_Z = -3.0\times 10^{-4} $\,dex\,kpc$^{-1}$\,km$^{-1}$\,s, $d[α/{\rm M}]/dL_P = 1.2\times 10^{-3}$\,dec\,kpc$^{-1}$\,km$^{-1}$\,s. These correlations can also be explained as the chemical-dependence of the spatial distribution shape of MAPs. We also exhibit the corresponding age dependence of angular momentum components. Under the assumption that the guiding radius ($R_g$) is proportional to $L_Z$, it provides direct observational evidence of the inside-out structure formation scenario of the thick disk, with $dR_g/dAge = -1.9$\,kpc\,Gyr$^{-1}$. The progressive changes in the disk thickness can be explained by the upside-down formation or/and the consequent kinematical heating.

Correction factors of the measurement errors of the LAMOST-LRS stellar parameters

We aim to investigate the propriety of stellar parameter errors of the official data release of the LAMOST low-resolution spectroscopy (LRS) survey. We diagnose the errors of radial velocity (RV), atmospheric parameters ([Fe/H], T eff , log g) and α-enhancement ([α/M]) for the latest data release version of DR7, including 6,079,235 effective spectra of 4,546,803 stars. Based on the duplicate observational sample and comparing the deviation of multiple measurements to their given errors, we find that, in general, the error of [α/M] is largely underestimated, and the error of radial velocity is slightly overestimated. We define a correction factor k to quantify these misestimations and correct the errors to be expressed as proper internal uncertainties. Using this self-calibration technique, we find that the k-factors significantly vary with the stellar spectral types and the spectral signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Particularly, we reveal a strange but evident trend between k-factors and error themselves for all five stellar parameters. Larger errors tend to have smaller k-factor values, i.e., they were more overestimated. After the correction, we recreate and quantify the tight correlations between SNR and errors, for all five parameters, while these correlations have dependence on spectral types. It also suggests that the parameter errors from each spectrum should be corrected individually. Finally, we provide the error correction factors of each derived parameter of each spectrum for the entire LAMOST-LRS DR7.

Quantifying chemical and kinematical properties of Galactic disks

We aim to quantify the chemical and kinematical properties of the Galactic disks with a sample of 119,558 giant stars having abundances and 3D velocities taken or derived from the APOGEE DR17 and Gaia EDR3 catalogs. The Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to distinguish the high-$α$ and low-$α$ sequences along the metallicity by simutaneously using the chemical and kinematical data. Four disk components are identified and quantified that named as h$α$mp, h$α$mr, l$α$mp, and l$α$mr disks, which correspond to the features of high-$α$ or low-$α$, and metal-poor or metal-rich. Combined with the spatial and stellar age information, we confirm that they are well interpreted in the two-infall formation model. The first infall of turbulent gas quickly forms the hot and thick h$α$mp disk with consequent thinner h$α$mr and l$α$mr disks. Then the second gas accretion forms a thinner and outermost l$α$mp disk. We find that the inside-out and upside-down scenario does not only satisfy the overall Galactic disk formation of these two major episodes, but also presents in the formation sequence of three inner disks. Importantly, we reveal the inverse Age-[M/H] trend of the l$α$mr disk, which means its younger stars are more metal-poor, indicating that the rejuvenate gas from the second accretion gradually dominates the later star formation. Meanwhile, the recently formed stars convergence to [M/H]$\sim$-0.1 dex, demonstrating a sufficiently mixture of gas from two infalls.

Coupling Chaotic System Based on Unit Transform and Its Applications in Image Encryption

Chaotic maps are very important for establishing chaos-based image encryption systems. This paper introduces a coupling chaotic system based on a certain unit transform, which can combine any two 1D chaotic maps to generate a new one with excellent performance. The chaotic behavior analysis has verified this coupling system's effectiveness and progress. In particular, we give a specific strategy about selecting an appropriate unit transform function to enhance chaos of generated maps. Besides, a new chaos based pseudo-random number generator, shorted as CBPRNG, is designed to improve the distribution of chaotic sequences. We give a mathematical illustration on the uniformity of CBPRNG, and test the randomness of it. Moreover, based on CBPRNG, an image encryption algorithm is introduced. Simulation results and security analysis indicate that the proposed image encryption scheme is competitive with some advanced existing methods.
