All Things Retarded: Radiation-Reaction in Worldline Quantum Field Theory

We exhibit an initial-value formulation of the worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) approach to the classical two-body problem in general relativity. We show that the Schwinger-Keldysh (in-in) formalism leads to purely retarded propagators in the evaluation of observables in the WQFT. Integration technology for retarded master integrals is introduced at third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order. As an application we compute the complete radiation-reacted impulse and radiated four momentum for the scattering of two non-spinning neutron stars including tidal effects at 3PM order, as well as the leading (2PM) far-field gravitational waveform.

Conservative and radiative dynamics of spinning bodies at third post-Minkowskian order using worldline quantum field theory

Using the spinning worldline quantum field theory formalism we calculate the quadratic-in-spin momentum impulse $Δp_i^μ$ and spin kick $Δa_i^μ$ from a scattering of two arbitrarily oriented spinning massive bodies (black holes or neutron stars) in a weak gravitational background up to third post-Minkowskian (PM) order ($G^3$). Two-loop Feynman integrals are performed in the potential region, yielding conservative results. For spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum we find a conservative scattering angle that is fully consistent with state-of-the-art post-Newtonian results. Using the 2PM radiated angular momentum previously obtained by Plefka, Steinhoff and the present authors we generalize the angle to include radiation-reaction effects, in which case it avoids divergences in the high-energy limit.

SUSY in the Sky with Gravitons

Picture yourself in the wave zone of a gravitational scattering event of two massive, spinning compact bodies (black holes, neutron stars or stars). We show that this system of genuine astrophysical interest enjoys a hidden $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, at least to the order of spin-squared (quadrupole) interactions in arbitrary $D$ spacetime dimensions. Using the ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric worldline action, augmented by finite-size corrections for the non-Kerr black hole case, we build a quadratic-in-spin extension to the worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism introduced in our previous work, and calculate the two bodies' deflection and spin kick to sub-leading order in the post-Minkowskian expansion in Newton's constant $G$. For spins aligned to the normal vector of the scattering plane we also obtain the scattering angle. All $D$-dimensional observables are derived from an eikonal phase given as the free energy of the WQFT, that is invariant under the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry transformations.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung and Hidden Supersymmetry of Spinning Bodies

The recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory, which describes the classical scattering of massive bodies in Einstein gravity, is generalized up to quadratic order in spin -- for a pair of Kerr black holes revealing a hidden ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. The far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in such a spinning encounter is computed at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion, and exhibits this supersymmetry. From the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum in a generic reference frame, and the total radiated energy in the center-of-mass frame to leading order in a low-velocity approximation.

Classical Gravitational Bremsstrahlung from a Worldline Quantum Field Theory

Using the recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) description of the classical scattering of two spinless black holes, we compute the far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in the encounter at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion. We reproduce previous results of Kovacs and Thorne in a highly economic way. Then using the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum and energy (including differential results). Our work may enable crucial improvements of gravitational-wave predictions in the regime of large relative velocities.

Schwarzschild-Tangherlini Metric from Scattering Amplitudes

We present a general framework with which the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric of a point particle in arbitrary dimensions can be derived from a scattering amplitude to all orders in the gravitational constant, $G_N$, in covariant gauge (i.e. $R_ξ$-gauge) with a generalized de Donder-type gauge function, $G_σ$. The metric is independent of the covariant gauge parameter $ξ$ and obeys the classical gauge condition $G_σ=0$. We compute the metric with the generalized gauge choice explicitly to second order in $G_N$ where gravitational self-interactions become important and these results verify the general framework to one-loop order. Interestingly, after generalizing to arbitrary dimension, a logarithmic dependence on the radial coordinate appears in space-time dimension $D=5$.

General Relativity from Quantum Field Theory

The quantum field theoretic description of general relativity is a modern approach to gravity where gravitational force is carried by spin-2 gravitons. In the classical limit of this theory, general relativity as described by the Einstein field equations is obtained. This limit, where classical general relativity is derived from quantum field theory is the topic of this thesis. The Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric, which describes the gravitational field of an inertial point particle in arbitrary space-time dimensions, $D$, is analyzed. The metric is related to the three-point vertex function of a massive scalar interacting with a graviton to all orders in $G_N$, and the one-loop contribution to this amplitude is computed from which the $G_N^2$ contribution to the metric is derived. To understand the gauge-dependence of the metric, covariant gauge is used which introduces the parameter, $ξ$, and the gauge-fixing function $G_σ$. In the classical limit, the gauge-fixing function turns out to be the coordinate condition, $G_σ=0$. As gauge-fixing function a novel family of gauges, which depends on an arbitrary parameter $α$ and includes both harmonic and de Donder gauge, is used. Feynman rules for the graviton field are derived and important results are the graviton propagator in covariant gauge and a general formula for the n-graviton vertex in terms of the Einstein tensor. The Feynman rules are used both in deriving the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric from amplitudes and in the computation of the one-loop correction to the metric. The one-loop correction to the metric is independent of the covariant gauge parameter, $ξ$, and satisfies the gauge condition $G_σ=0$ where $G_σ$ is the family of gauges depending on $α$. In space-time $D=5$ a logarithm appears in position space and this phenomena is analyzed in terms of redundant gauge freedom.
