Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions

Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.

A Strongly Coupled Fourth Generation at the LHC

We study extensions of the standard model with a strongly coupled fourth generation. This occurs in models where electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered by the condensation of at least some of the fourth-generation fermions. With focus on the phenomenology at the LHC, we study the pair production of fourth-generation down quarks, D4. We consider the typical masses that could be associated with a strongly coupled fermion sector, in the range (300--600) GeV. We show that the production and successive decay of these heavy quarks into final states with same-sign dileptons, trileptons and four leptons, can be easily seen above background with relatively low luminosity. On the other hand, in order to confirm the presence of a new strong interaction responsible for fourth-generation condensation, we study its contribution to D4 pair-production, and the potential to separate it from standard QCD-induced heavy quark production. We show that this separation might require large amounts of data. This is true even if it is assumed that the new interaction is mediated by a massive colored vector boson, since its strong coupling to the fourth generation renders its width of the order of its mass. We conclude that, although this class of models can be falsified at early stages of the LHC running, its confirmation would require high integrated luminosities.

Renormalization of the S Parameter in Holographic Models of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We show that the S parameter is not finite in theories of electroweak symmetry breaking in a slice of anti--de Sitter five-dimensional space, with the light fermions localized in the ultraviolet. We compute the one-loop contributions to S from the Higgs sector and show that they are logarithmically dependent on the cutoff of the theory. We discuss the renormalization of S, as well as the implications for bounds from electroweak precision measurements on these models. We argue that, although in principle the choice of renormalization condition could eliminate the S parameter constraint, a more consistent condition would still result in a large and positive S. On the other hand, we show that the dependence on the Higgs mass in S can be entirely eliminated by the renormalization procedure, making it impossible in these theories to extract a Higgs mass bound from electroweak precision constraints.

Holographic Models of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We review the status of models of electroweak symmetry breaking in a slice of anti--de Sitter space. These models can be thought of as dual to strongly interacting theories of the electroweak scale. After an introduction to some generic issues in bulk theories in AdS5, we concentrate on the model-building of the Higgs sector.

The Quirky Collider Signals of Folded Supersymmetry

We investigate the collider signals associated with scalar quirks ("squirks") in folded supersymmetric models. As opposed to regular superpartners in supersymmetric models these particles are uncolored, but are instead charged under a new confining group, leading to radically different collider signals. Due to the new strong dynamics, squirks that are pair produced do not hadronize separately, but rather form a highly excited bound state. The excited ``squirkonium'' loses energy to radiation before annihilating back into Standard Model particles. We calculate the branching fractions into various channels for this process, which is prompt on collider time-scales. The most promising annihilation channel for discovery is W+photon which dominates for squirkonium near its ground state. We demonstrate the feasibility of the LHC search, showing that the mass peak is visible above the SM continuum background and estimate the discovery reach.

Direct Detection of Kaluza-Klein Particles in Neutrino Telescopes

In theories with universal extra dimensions (UEDs), all standard model fields propagate in the bulk and the lightest state of the first Kaluza-Klein (KK) level can be made stable by imposing a Z2 parity. We consider a framework where the lightest KK particle (LKP) is a neutral, extremely weakly interacting particle such as the first KK excitation of the graviton, while the next-to-lightest KK particle (NLKP) is the first KK mode of a charged right-handed lepton. In such a scenario, due to its very small couplings to the LKP, the NLKP is long-lived. We investigate the production of these particles from the interaction of high energy neutrinos with nucleons in the Earth, and determine the rate of NLKP events in neutrino telescopes. Using the Waxman-Bahcall limit for the neutrino flux, we find that the rate can be as large as a few hundreds events a year for realistic values of the NLKP mass.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from a Holographic Fourth Generation

We consider a model with four generations of standard model fermions propagating in an extra dimension with an AdS background metric. We show that if the zero modes of the fourth generation are highly localized towards the infrared brane, it is possible to break the electroweak symmetry via their condensation, partly driven by their interactions with the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons, as well as by the presence of bulk higher-dimensional operators. This dynamical mechanism results in a composite Higgs, which is highly localized and generally heavy. The localization of fermions in the five-dimensional bulk naturally leads to the standard model Yukawa couplings via the action of the bulk higher-dimensional operators, which are suppressed by the Planck scale. We obtain the spectrum of the model and explore some of its phenomenological consequences, both for electroweak precision constraints as well as at the Large Hadron Collider.

Resonances from Two Universal Extra Dimensions

Standard model gauge bosons propagating in two universal extra dimensions give rise to heavy spin-1 and spin-0 particles. The lightest of these, carrying Kaluza-Klein numbers (1,0), may be produced only in pairs at colliders, whereas the (1,1) modes, which are heavier by a factor of \sqrt{2}, may be singly produced. We show that the cascade decays of (1,1) particles generate a series of closely-spaced narrow resonances in the t\bar{t} invariant mass distribution. At the Tevatron, s-channel production of (1,1) gluons and electroweak bosons will be sensitive to t\bar{t} resonances up to masses in the 0.5 - 0.7 TeV range. Searches at the LHC for resonances originating from several higher-level modes will further test the existence of two universal extra dimensions.

New Solutions to the Hierarchy Problem

After summarizing the status of the Standard Model, we focus on the Hierarchy Problem and why we believe this strongly suggests the need for new physics at the TeV scale. We then concentrate on theories with extra dimensions and their possible manifestations at this scale.

A Signal for a Theory of Flavor at the LHC

In Randall-Sundrum models with gauge bosons and fermions in the extra dimensional bulk, it is possible to build models of flavor by localizing the fermions in the extra dimension. Since the Higgs must be localized at or close to the TeV scale fixed point, heavier fermions must be localized close to this brane. The first Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons are also TeV-localized, so they have stronger couplings to heavier fermions leading to tree-level flavor-violating couplings. We investigate the potential of the LHC to observe flavor violation in single top production at very high invariant masses, in addition to the observation of the corresponding top--anti-top resonance. We conclude that the LHC will be able to observe tree-level flavor violation in single top production, probing KK masses at least as large as 2 TeV, as well as a very interesting region of the parameters.

Direct Detection of Supersymmetric Particles in Neutrino Telescopes

In supersymmetric theories where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino the next to lightest supersymmetric particle is typically a long lived charged slepton. In this paper, following our earlier proposal, we perform a detailed study of the production of pairs of these particles induced by the interactions of high energy cosmic neutrinos with nucleons in the earth, their propagation through the earth and finally their detection in neutrino telescopes. We investigate the charged slepton energy loss in detail and establish that the relatively small cross-section for the production of supersymmetric particles is partially compensated for by the very long range of these heavy particles. The signal, consisting of two parallel charged tracks emerging from the earth, is characterized by a track separation of a few hundred meters. We perform a careful analysis of the main background, coming from direct di-muon production, and show that it can be separated from the signal due to its characteristically smaller track separation. We conclude that neutrino telescopes will complement collider searches in the determination of the supersymmetry breaking scale, and may even provide the first evidence for supersymmetry at the weak scale.

The Little Hierarchy in Universal Extra Dimensions

In the standard model in universal extra dimensions (UED) the mass of the Higgs field is driven to the cutoff of the higher-dimensional theory. This re-introduces a small hierarchy since the compactification scale 1/R should not be smaller than the weak scale. In this paper we study possible solutions to this problem by considering five-dimensional theories where the Higgs field potential vanishes at tree level due to a global symmetry. We consider two avenues: a Little Higgs model and a Twin Higgs model. An obstacle for the embedding of these four-dimensional models in five dimensions is that their logarithmic sensitivity to the cutoff will result in linear divergences in the higher dimensional theory. We show that, despite the increased cutoff sensitivity of higher dimensional theories, it is possible to control the Higgs mass in these two scenarios. For the Little Higgs model studied, the phenomenology will be significantly different from the case of the standard model in UED. This is due to the fact that the compactification scale approximately coincides with the scale where the masses of the new states appear. For the case of the Twin Higgs model, the compactification scale may be considerably lower than the scale where the new states appear. If it is as low as allowed by current limits, it would be possible to experimentally observe the standard model Kaluza-Klein states as well as a new heavy quark. On the other hand, if the compactification scale is higher, then the phenomenology at colliders would coincide with the one for the standard model in UED.

Folded Supersymmetry and the LEP Paradox

We present a new class of models that stabilize the weak scale against radiative corrections up to scales of order 5 TeV without large corrections to precision electroweak observables. In these `folded supersymmetric' theories the one loop quadratic divergences of the Standard Model Higgs field are cancelled by opposite spin partners, but the gauge quantum numbers of these new particles are in general different from those of the conventional superpartners. This class of models is built around the correspondence that exists in the large N limit between the correlation functions of supersymmetric theories and those of their non-supersymmetric orbifold daughters. By identifying the mechanism which underlies the cancellation of one loop quadratic divergences in these theories, we are able to construct simple extensions of the Standard Model which are radiatively stable at one loop. Ultraviolet completions of these theories can be obtained by imposing suitable boundary conditions on an appropriate supersymmetric higher dimensional theory compactified down to four dimensions. We construct a specific model based on these ideas which stabilizes the weak scale up to about 20 TeV and where the states which cancel the top loop are scalars not charged under Standard Model color. Its collider signatures are distinct from conventional supersymmetric theories and include characteristic events with hard leptons and missing energy.

Two Universal Extra Dimensions

We review the main results of the study of the Standard model propagating in two universal extra dimensions. Gauge bosons give rise to heavy spin-1 and spin-0 particles. The latter constitute the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle in the level (1,0). The level (1,1) can be s-channel produced. The main signals at the Tevatron and the LHC will be several $t\bar t$ resonances.

Six-Dimensional Gauge Theory on the Chiral Square

We construct gauge theories in two extra dimensions compactified on the chiral square, which is a simple compactification that leads to chiral fermions in four dimensions. Stationarity of the action on the boundary specifies the boundary conditions for gauge fields. Any six-dimensional gauge field decomposed in Kaluza-Klein modes includes a tower of heavy spin-1 particles whose longitudinal polarizations are linear combinations of the extra-dimensional components, and a tower of heavy spin-0 particles corresponding to the orthogonal combinations. These linear combinations depend on the Kaluza-Klein numbers, and are independent of the gauge fixing. If the gauge symmetry is broken by the vacuum expectation value of a six-dimensional scalar, at each Kaluza-Klein level three spinless fields in the adjoint representation mix to provide the longitudinal polarization of the spin-1 mode, leaving the orthogonal states as two spin-0 particles. We derive the interactions of the Kaluza-Klein modes for generic gauge theories, laying the groundwork for the Standard Model in two universal extra dimensions, and more generally for future model building and phenomenological studies.

Flavor Violation in Warped Extra Dimensions and CP Asymmetries in B Decays

We show that CP asymmetries in $b\to s$ hadronic decays are potentially affected by the presence of massive color-octet particles strongly coupled to the third generation quarks. Theories with warped extra dimensions provide natural candidates in the Kaluza-Klein excitations of gluons in scenarios where flavor-breaking by bulk fermion masses results in the localization of fermion wave-functions. Topcolor models, in which a new gauge interaction leads to top-condensation and a large top mass, also result in the presence of these color-octet states with TeV masses . We find that large effects are possible in modes such as $B\toϕK_s$, $B\to η' K_s$ and $B\toπ^0 K_s$ among others.

Holographic Theories of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking without a Higgs Boson

Recently, realistic theories of electroweak symmetry breaking have been constructed in which the electroweak symmetry is broken by boundary conditions imposed at a boundary of higher dimensional spacetime. These theories have equivalent 4D dual descriptions, in which the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken by non-trivial infrared dynamics of some gauge interaction, whose coupling g and size N satisfy g^2N > 16pi^2. Such theories allow one to calculate electroweak radiative corrections, including the oblique parameters S, T and U, as long as g^2N/16pi^2 and N are large. We study how the duality between the 4D and 5D theories manifests itself in the computation of various physical quantities. In particular, we study a warped 5D theory where the electroweak symmetry is broken by boundary conditions at the infrared brane. We show that S exceeds the experimental bound if the minimal theory is in a weakly coupled regime. This requires either an extension of the model or departure from weak coupling. An interesting scenario is obtained if the gauge couplings in the 5D theory take the largest possible values -- the value suggested by naive dimensional analysis. We argue that such a theory can provide a potentially consistent picture for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking: corrections to the electroweak observables are sufficiently small while realistic fermion masses are obtained without conflicting with bounds from flavor violation. The theory contains only the standard model quarks, leptons and gauge bosons below \sim 2 TeV, except for a possible light radion. At \sim 2 TeV increasingly broad string resonances appear. An analysis of top-quark phenomenology and flavor violation is also presented, which is applicable to both the weakly-coupled and strongly-coupled cases.
