Effects of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector in Rare B and K Decays

The effects of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector in rare $B$ and $K$ decays are considered in the presence of new strong dynamics at a large energy scale. In the context of the low energy effective lagrangian of the symmetry breaking sector, we focus on the contributions that are not constrained by bounds on oblique corrections or anomalous triple gauge boson vertices. We find that these have very little effect in $b\to sγ$, but potentially large contributions appear in $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ and $b\to sν\barν$ as well as in $b\to s g$ processes. Deviations from the standard model in rare $K$ decays such as $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ are shown to be correlated with the ones in the $B$ modes. The distinct resulting pattern of deviations from the standard model in rare decays is a characteristic feature of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector.

Model-independent Constraints on Topcolor from $R_b$

We identify and compute the main corrections to $R_b$ in Topcolor theories. They are due to the top-pions, the pseudo-Goldstone bosons associated with the chiral symmetry breaking responsible for the top quark mass, and amount to -(1-4)%, independent of the details of the Topcolor model. We show that the cancellation of this effect against the contributions from Topcolor vector and scalar resonances is unlikely, given the inherently distinct character of the two scales governing the potentially cancelling terms. The resulting value of $R_b$ leads to severe constraints on Topcolor theories.

Dispersive Approach to Semileptonic Form-Factors in Heavy-to-Light Meson Decays

We study the semileptonic decays of heavy mesons into light pseudoscalars by making use of dispersion relations. Constraints from heavy quark symmetry, chiral symmetry and perturbative QCD are implemented into a dispersive model for the form-factors. Large deviations from $B^*$-pole dominance are observed in $B\toπ\ellν$. We discuss the model prediction for this mode and its possible impact on the extraction of $|V_{ub}|$.

Potential for Discoveries in Charm Meson Physics

The possibility of using charm meson physics to test the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. In the case of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing, the SM contributions are carefully considered and the existence of a window for the observation of new physics is discussed. Some examples of extensions of the SM giving large mixing signals are presented. Finally, some distinctive aspects of CP violation and rare decays in charm mesons are discussed.

Testing the Standard Model in $B\to K^{(*)} \ell^+\ell^-$

We study the potential of $B\to K^{(*)} \ell^+\ell^-$ decays as tests of the standard model. After discussing the reliability of theoretical predictions for the hadronic matrix elements involved, we examine the impact of different new physics scenarios on various observables. We show that the angular information in \bks together with the dilepton mass distribution can highly constrain new physics. This is particularly true in the large dilepton mass region, where reliable predictions for the hadronic matrix elements can be made with presently available data. We compare the Standard Model predictions with those of a Two-Higgs doublet model as well as TopColor models, all of which give distinct signals in this region.

Radiative Weak Decays of Charm Mesons

We address Standard Model predictions for flavor-changing radiative transitions of the pseudoscalar charm mesons. Short-distance contributions in $D$ radiative transitions are contrasted with those in B decays. A full analysis is presented of the $c\to u+γ$ electromagnetic penguin amplitude with QCD radiative corrections included. Given the importance of long-range effects for the charm sector, special attention is paid to such contributions as the vector dominance and pole amplitudes. A number of two-body final states in exclusive charm radiative decays is considered and the corresponding branching ratio predictions are given.

Charm Mixing and CP Violation in the Standard Model

The Standard Model predictions for $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ mixing and CP violation in $D$ decays are revised. The emphasis is put on obtaining the order of magnitude of the effects. In the case of mixing, the different approaches to the long distance contributions are carefully discussed. The size of CP asymmetries is discussed in general and some specific calculations are reviewed. The possibility of using kinematic signals is briefly described.}}

The Decay $B\toπ\ellν$ in Heavy Quark Effective Theory

We present a systematic analysis of the $B^{(*)}\toπ\,\ell\,ν$ weak decay form factors to order $1/m_b$ in the heavy quark effective theory, including a discussion of renormalization group effects. These processes are described by a set of ten universal functions (two at leading order, and eight at order $1/m_b$), which are defined in terms of matrix elements of operators in the effective theory. In the soft pion limit, the effective theory yields normalization conditions for these functions, which generalize the well-known current algebra relations derived from the combination of heavy quark and chiral symmetries to next-to-leading order in $1/m_b$. In particular, the effects of the nearby $B^*$-pole are correctly contained in the form factors of the effective theory. We discuss the prospects for a model independent determination of $|V_{ub}|$ and the $B B^*π$ coupling constant from these processes.
