The initial value problem for linearized gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild naked singularity

The coupled equations for the scalar modes of the linearized Einstein equations around Schwarzschild's spacetime were reduced by Zerilli to a 1+1 wave equation with a potential $V$, on a field $Ψ_z$. For smooth metric perturbations $Ψ_z$ is singular at $r_s=-6M/(\ell-1)(\ell+2)$, $\ell$ the mode harmonic number, and $V$ has a second order pole at $r_s$. This is irrelevant to the black hole exterior stability problem, where $r>2M>0$, and $r_s <0$, but it introduces a non trivial problem in the naked singular case where $M<0$, then $r_s>0$, and the singularity appears in the relevant range of $r$. We solve this problem by developing a new approach to the evolution of the even mode, based on a {\em new gauge invariant function}, $\hat Ψ$ -related to $Ψ_z$ by an intertwiner operator- that is a regular function of the metric perturbation {\em for any value of $M$}. This allows to address the issue of evolution of gravitational perturbations in this non globally hyperbolic background, and to complete the proof of the linear instability of the Schwarzschild naked singularity, by showing that a previously found unstable mode is excitable by generic initial data. This is further illustrated by numerically solving the linearized equations for suitably chosen initial data.

Instabilities of naked singularities and black hole interiors in General Relativity

Metrics representing black holes in General Relativity may exhibit naked singularities for certain values of their parameters. This is the case for super-extremal ($J^2 > M>0$) Kerr and super-extremal ($|Q|>M>0$) Reissner-Nördstrom spacetimes, and also for the negative mass Schwarzschild spacetime. We review our recent work where we show that these nakedly singular spacetimes are unstable under linear gravitational perturbations, a result that supports the cosmic censorship conjecture, and also that the inner stationary region beyond the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole ($J^2 <M$) is linearly unstable.

Vacuum solutions with nontrivial boundaries for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

The classification of certain class of static solutions for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in vacuum is presented. The spacelike section of the class of metrics under consideration is a warped product of the real line with a nontrivial base manifold. For arbitrary values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, the base manifold must be Einstein with an additional scalar restriction. The geometry of the boundary can be relaxed only when the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is related with the cosmological and Newton constants, so that the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution. This additional freedom in the boundary metric allows the existence of three main branches of geometries in the bulk, containing new black holes and wormholes in vacuum.

Gravitational instabilities in Kerr space-times

In this paper we consider the possible existence of unstable axisymmetric modes in Kerr space times, resulting from exponentially growing solutions of the Teukolsky equation. We describe a transformation that casts the radial equation that results upon separation of variables in the Teukolsky equation, in the form of a Schrödinger equation, and combine the properties of the solutions of this equations with some recent results on the asymptotic behaviour of spin weighted spheroidal harmonics to prove the existence of an infinite family of unstable modes. Thus we prove that the stationary region beyond a Kerr black hole inner horizon is unstable under gravitational linear perturbations. We also prove that Kerr space-time with angular momentum larger than its square mass, which has a naked singularity, is unstable.

Static black hole solutions with a self interacting conformally coupled scalar field

We study static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant and a conformally coupled self interacting scalar field. Exact solutions for this model found by Mart{\'ı}nez, Troncoso, and Zanelli, (MTZ), were subsequently shown to be unstable under linear perturbations, with modes that diverge arbitrarily fast. We find that the moduli space of static, spherically symmetric solutions that have a regular horizon -and satisfy the weak and dominant energy conditions outside the horizon- is a singular subset of a two dimensional space parameterized by the horizon radius and the value of the scalar field at the horizon. The singularity of this space of solutions provides an explanation for the instability of the MTZ spacetimes, and leads to the conclusion that, if we include stability as a criterion, there are no physically acceptable black hole solutions for this system that contain a cosmological horizon in the exterior of its event horizon.

Exact solutions for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five dimensions: Black holes, wormholes and spacetime horns

An exhaustive classification of certain class of static solutions for the five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in vacuum is presented. The class of metrics under consideration is such that the spacelike section is a warped product of the real line with a nontrivial base manifold. It is shown that for generic values of the coupling constants the base manifold must be necessarily of constant curvature, and the solution reduces to the topological extension of the Boulware-Deser metric. It is also shown that the base manifold admits a wider class of geometries for the special case when the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is properly tuned in terms of the cosmological and Newton constants. This freedom in the metric at the boundary, which determines the base manifold, allows the existence of three main branches of geometries in the bulk. For negative cosmological constant, if the boundary metric is such that the base manifold is arbitrary, but fixed, the solution describes black holes whose horizon geometry inherits the metric of the base manifold. If the base manifold possesses a negative constant Ricci scalar, two different kinds of wormholes in vacuum are obtained. For base manifolds with vanishing Ricci scalar, a different class of solutions appears resembling "spacetime horns". There is also a special case for which, if the base manifold is of constant curvature, due to certain class of degeneration of the field equations, the metric admits an arbitrary redshift function. For wormholes and spacetime horns, there are regions for which the gravitational and centrifugal forces point towards the same direction. All these solutions have finite Euclidean action, which reduces to the free energy in the case of black holes, and vanishes in the other cases. Their mass is also obtained from a surface integral.

Gravitational instability of static spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes in five and six dimensions

Five and six dimensional static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean black holes, are unstable under gravitational perturbations if their mass is lower than a critical value set by the string tension. The instability is due to the Gauss-Bonnet correction to Einstein's equations, and was found in a previous work on linear stability of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with constant curvature horizons in arbitrary dimensions. We study the unstable cases and calculate the values of the critical masses. The results are relevant to the issue of black hole production in high energy collisions.

Static wormhole solution for higher-dimensional gravity in vacuum

A static wormhole solution for gravity in vacuum is found for odd dimensions greater than four. In five dimensions the gravitational theory considered is described by the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet action where the coupling of the quadratic term is fixed in terms of the cosmological constant. In higher dimensions d=2n+1, the theory corresponds to a particular case of the Lovelock action containing higher powers of the curvature, so that in general, it can be written as a Chern-Simons form for the AdS group. The wormhole connects two asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes each with a geometry at the boundary locally given by R times S^{1} times H_{d-3}. Gravity pulls towards a fixed hypersurface located at some arbitrary proper distance parallel to the neck. The causal structure shows that both asymptotic regions are connected by light signals in a finite time. The Euclidean continuation of the wormhole is smooth independently of the Euclidean time period, and it can be seen as instanton with vanishing Euclidean action. The mass can also be obtained from a surface integral and it is shown to vanish.

Instability of charged and rotating naked singularities

We provide evidence that ``super-extremal'' black hole space-times (either with charge larger than mass or angular momentum larger than mass), which contain naked singularities, are unstable under linearized perturbations. This is given by an infinite family of exact unstable solutions in the charged non rotating case, and by a set of (unstable) numerical solutions in the rotating case. These results may be relevant to the expectation that these space-times cannot be the endpoint of physical gravitational collapse.

Instability of the negative mass Schwarzschild naked singularity

We study the negative mass Schwarzschild spacetime, which has a naked singularity, and show that it is perturbatively unstable. This is achieved by first introducing a modification of the well known Regge - Wheeler - Zerilli approach to black hole perturbations to allow for the presence of a ``kinematic'' singularity that arises for negative masses, and then exhibiting exact exponentially growing solutions to the linearized Einstein's equations. The perturbations are smooth everywhere and behave nicely around the singularity and at infinity. In particular, the first order variation of the scalar invariants can be made everywhere arbitrarily small as compared to the zeroth order terms. Our approach is also compared to a recent analysis that leads to a different conclusion regarding the stability of the negative mass Schwarzschild spacetime. We also comment on the relevance of our results to the stability of more general negative mass, nakedly singular spacetimes.

Linear stability of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet static spacetimes. Part II: vector and scalar perturbations

We study the stability under linear perturbations of a class of static solutions of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in $D=n+2$ dimensions with spatial slices of the form $Σ_{\k}^n \times {\mathbb R}^+$, $Σ_{\k}^n$ an $n-$manifold of constant curvature $\k$. Linear perturbations for this class of space-times can be generally classified into tensor, vector and scalar types. In a previous paper, tensor perturbations were analyzed. In this paper we study vector and scalar perturbations. We show that vector perturbations can be analyzed in general using an S-deformation approach and do not introduce instabilities. On the other hand, we show by analyzing an explicit example that, contrary to what happens in Einstein gravity, scalar perturbations may lead to instabilities in black holes with spherical horizons when the Gauss-Bonnet string corrections are taken into account.

Obstructions on the horizon geometry from string theory corrections to Einstein gravity

Higher dimensional Einstein gravity in vacuum admits static black hole solutions with an Einstein manifold of non constant curvature as a horizon. This gives a much richer family of static black holes than in four dimensional GR. However, as we show in this paper, the Gauss-Bonnet string theory correction to Einstein gravity poses severe limitations on the geometry of a horizon Einstein manifold. The additional stringy constraints rule out most of the known examples of exotic black holes with a horizon of non constant curvature.

Plane fronted gravitational waves in Lovelock-Yang-Mills theory

We obtain plane fronted gravitational waves (PFGWs) in arbitrary dimension in Lovelock gravity, to any order in the Riemann tensor. We exhibit pure gravity as well as Lovelock-Yang-Mills PFGWs. Lovelock-Maxwell and $pp$ waves arise as particular cases. The electrovac solutions trivially satisfy the Lovelock-Born-Infeld field equations. The peculiarities that arise in degenerate Lovelock theories are also analyzed.

Gravitational instability of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes under tensor mode perturbations

We analyze the tensor mode perturbations of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations with a quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term in dimension $D > 4$. We show that the evolution equations for this type of perturbations can be cast in a Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli form, and obtain the exact potential for the corresponding Schrödinger-like stability equation. As an immediate application we prove that for $D \neq 6$ and $α>0$, the sign choice for the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient suggested by string theory, all positive mass black holes of this type are stable. In the exceptional case $D =6$, we find a range of parameters where positive mass asymptotically flat black holes, with regular horizon, are unstable. This feature is found also in general for $α< 0$.

Topology of Quantum Modified Moduli Spaces

We prove that all SYM theories that have a quantum modified moduli space $\m$ defined by a single constraint equation have trivial homotopy groups $π_j(\m)$ for $j=0,1,2,3$ and 4. This implies that none of these theories admit skyrmions or vortexes, a fact that had only been proved for supersymmetric QCD with $N_f=N_c$ and $Sp(2n)$ with $2n+2$ fundamentals, whereas those of them with a nontrivial $H^5 (\m)$ admit Wess-Zumino-Witten terms in their effective actions. Contrary to expectations, examples of quantum modified moduli spaces with a trivial $H^5 (\m)$ are found in the literature.

Discrete anomalies and the null cone of SYM theories

A stronger version of an anomaly matching theorem (AMT) is proven that allows to anticipate the matching of continuous as well as discrete global anomalies. The AMT shows a connection between anomaly matching and the geometry of the null cone of SYM theories. Discrete symmetries are shown to be broken at the origin of the moduli space in Seiberg-Witten theories.

Remarks on experimental bounds on quantum gravity effects on fermions

Effects of space time geometry fluctuations on fermionic fields have recently been looked for in nuclear physics experiments, and were found to be much lower than predicted, at a phenomenological level, by loop quantum gravity. We show that possible corrections to the canonical structure in the semi classical regime may introduce important changes in the outcome of the theory, and may explain the observed mismatch with experiments.
