Low-latitude gamma-ray sources: correlations and variability

A review of the main characteristics of low-latitude sources in the third EGRET catalog is presented. There are 75 unidentified gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET at less than 10 degrees from the galactic plane. About a half of these sources are spatially correlated with potential galactic gamma-ray emitters such as supernova remnants, OB associations and early-type stars with very strong stellar winds. The other half is formed by sources without positional correlation with known galactic objects capable to generate a gamma ray flux significant enough as to be detected by EGRET. A variability analysis shows that this second group of sources contains several objects with high levels of gamma-ray variability. These variable sources resemble very much the AGNs detected by EGRET, but without their typical strong radio emission. To establish the nature of these sources is one of the most urgent problems of high-energy astrophysics.

Positional correlation between low-latitude gamma-ray sources and SNRs

We present the results of a spatial correlation analysis between unidentified gamma-ray sources in the 3EG catalog and candidates to supernova remnants. This work extends a previous study made by Romero, Benaglia & Torres (1999). We also consider the gamma-ray emission variability and the spectral index for the sources with positional coincidence.

Can the gamma-ray source 3EG J2033+4118 be produced by the stellar system Cyg OB2 No.5?

We discuss the possibility that the stellar system Cyg OB2 No.5 can be a gamma-ray source in the light of recent EGRET and radio data. This system is formed by an O7 Ia + Ofpe/WN9 contact binary. A third star, probably a B0 V star also associated with the system, is located at $\sim 1700$ AU from the primary. We estimate the expected gamma-ray luminosity from the colliding winds region, the terminal shock of the wind, and the unstable zone at the base of the wind, and conclude that, under very reasonable assumptions, Cyg OB2 No.5 can generate about a half of the gamma-ray flux detected from the positionally coincident source 3EG J2033+4118. We suggest, then, that other O stars belonging to the association, also placed within the 95 % probability EGRET location contour, could contribute to the observed gamma-ray flux.

An inquiry into the nature of the gamma-ray source 3EG J1828+0142

The unidentified, low-latitude, $γ$-ray source 3EG J1828+0142 presents high levels of variability and a steep spectral index $Γ\sim2.7$. Here we propose a model for this source where the high-energy emission is produced by a galactic Kerr-Newman black hole. The model takes into account electron-positron annihilation losses in the calculation of the expected spectral energy distribution and can reproduce the observational features, including the absence of a strong radio counterpart. We also report the discovery of a nearby supernova remnant that could be associated with the original supernova explosion that created the black hole. Several faint radio sources were also detected in the radio field within the inner $γ$-ray confidence contour and their spectral index estimated. Some of these sources could be the expected weak radio counterpart.

Gamma Ray Bursts with peculiar temporal asymmetry

Based on the study of temporal asymmetry of 631 gamma ray bursts from the BATSE 3B catalog by Link and Epstein [Ap J 466, 764 (1996)], we identify the population of bursts whose rising times are longer than their decays, thus showing atypical profiles. We analyse their sky distribution, morphology, time-space clustering and other average properties and compare them with those associated with the bulk of the bursts. We show how most of the peculiar bursts analysed are consistent with recent fireball models, but a fraction of bursts ($\sim 4$% of the total sample) appear to be inconsistent.

Might some gamma ray bursts be an observable signature of natural wormholes?

The extragalactic microlensing scenario for natural wormholes is examined. It is shown that the main features of wormhole lensing events upon the light of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are similar to some types of already observed Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). Using recent satellite data on GRBs, an upper limit to the negative mass density -- ${\cal O} (10^{-36})$ g cm$^{-3}$ -- under the form of wormhole-like objects is presented.

Wormholes, Gamma Ray Bursts and the Amount of Negative Mass in the Universe

In this essay, we assume that negative mass objects can exist in the extragalactic space and analyze the consequences of their microlensing on light from distant Active Galactic Nuclei. We find that such events have very similar features to some observed Gamma Ray Bursts and use recent satellite data to set an upper bound to the amount of negative mass in the universe.

Steps towards an axiomatic pregeometry of space-time

We present a deductive theory of space-time which is realistic, objective, and relational. It is realistic because it assumes the existence of physical things endowed with concrete properties. It is objective because it can be formulated without any reference to cognoscent subjects or sensorial fields. Finally, it is relational because it assumes that space-time is not a thing but a complex of relations among things. In this way, the original program of Leibniz is consummated, in the sense that space is ultimately an order of coexistents, and time is an order of succesives. In this context, we show that the metric and topological properties of Minkowskian space-time are reduced to relational properties of concrete things. We also sketch how our theory can be extended to encompass a Riemmanian space-time.

Axiomatic foundations of quantum mechanics revisited: the case for systems

We present an axiomatization of non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics for a system with an arbitrary number of components. The interpretation of our system of axioms is realistic and objective. The EPR paradox and its relation with realism is discussed in this framework. It is shown that there is no contradiction between realism and recent experimental results.
