Exploring new corners of asymptotically safe unimodular quantum gravity

The renormalization group flow of unimodular quantum gravity is investigated within two different classes of truncations of the flowing effective action. In particular, we search for non-trivial fixed-point solutions for polynomial expansions of the $f(R)$-type as well as of the $F(R_{μν}R^{μν})+R\,Z(R_{μν}R^{μν})$ family on a maximally symmetric background. We close the system of beta functions of the gravitational couplings with anomalous dimensions of the graviton and Faddeev-Popov ghosts treated according to two independent prescriptions: one based on the so-called background approximation and the other based on a hybrid approach which combines the background approximation with simultaneous vertex and derivative expansions. For consistency, in the background approximation, we employ a background-dependent correction to the flow equation which arises from the proper treatment of the functional measure of the unimodular path integral. We also investigate how different canonical choices of the endomorphism parameter in the regulator function affect the fixed-point structure. Although we have found evidence for the existence of a non-trivial fixed point for the two classes of polynomial projections, the $f(R)$ truncation exhibited better (apparent) convergence properties. Furthermore, we consider the inclusion of matter fields without self-interactions minimally coupled to the unimodular gravitational action and we find evidence for compatibility of asymptotically safe unimodular quantum gravity with the field content of the Standard Model and some of its common extensions.

Unimodular quantum gravity: Steps beyond perturbation theory

The renormalization group flow of unimodular quantum gravity is computed by taking into account the graviton and Faddeev-Popov ghosts anomalous dimensions. In this setting, a ultraviolet attractive fixed point is found. Symmetry-breaking terms induced by the coarse-graining procedure are introduced and their impact on the flow is analyzed. A discussion on the equivalence of unimodular quantum gravity and standard full diffeomorphism invariant theories is provided beyond perturbation theory.

On the impact of Majorana masses in gravity-matter systems

We investigate the Higgs-Yukawa system with Majorana masses of a fermion within asymptotically safe quantum gravity. Using the functional renormalization group method we derive the beta functions of the Majorana masses and the Yukawa coupling constant and discuss the possibility of a non-trivial fixed point for the Yukawa coupling constant. In the gravitational sector we take into account higher derivative terms such as $R^2$ and $R_{μν}R^{μν}$ in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert term for our truncation. For a certain value of the gravitational coupling constants and the Majorana masses, the Yukawa coupling constant has a non-trivial fixed point value and becomes an irrelevant parameter being thus a prediction of the theory. We also discuss consequences due to the Majorana mass terms to the running of the quartic coupling constant in the scalar sector.

A link that matters: Towards phenomenological tests of unimodular asymptotic safety

Constraining quantum gravity from observations is a challenge. We expand on the idea that the interplay of quantum gravity with matter could be key to meeting this challenge. Thus, we set out to confront different potential candidates for quantum gravity -- unimodular asymptotic safety, Weyl-squared gravity and asymptotically safe gravity -- with constraints arising from demanding an ultraviolet complete Standard Model. Specifically, we show that within approximations, demanding that quantum gravity solves the Landau-pole problems in Abelian gauge couplings and Yukawa couplings strongly constrains the viable gravitational parameter space. In the case of Weyl-squared gravity with a dimensionless gravitational coupling, we also investigate whether the gravitational contribution to beta functions in the matter sector calculated from functional Renormalization Group techniques is universal, by studying the dependence on the regulator, metric field parameterization and choice of gauge.

Asymptotic safety and field parametrization dependence in the f(R) truncation

We study the dependence on field parametrization of the functional renormalization group equation in the $f(R)$ truncation for the effective average action. We perform a systematic analysis of the dependence of fixed points and critical exponents in polynomial truncations. We find that, beyond the Einstein-Hilbert truncation, results are qualitatively different depending on the choice of parametrization. In particular, we observe that there are two different classes of fixed points, one with three relevant directions and the other with two. The computations are performed in the background approximation. We compare our results with the available literature and analyze how different schemes in the regularizations can affect the fixed point structure.

Photon gravitational defection in Lorentz violating scenarios

The effect of Lorentz symmetry violation in the phenomenon of photon gravitational bending, is investigated. Using a semiclassical approach, where the photon is described by the Carrol-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) electrodynamics which is responsible for implementing the Lorentz symmetry violation, the gravitational deflection angle related to the CFJ photon is computed. As expected, this bending angle experiences a deviation from the usual Einstein result and the latter is recovered in the appropriate limit. A comparison between the theoretical prediction and the experimental results allows to conclude that no trace of Lorentz symmetry breaking is found provided the components of the background vector field are $\lesssim 10^{-8}$ eV.
