Generalised Gibbs Ensemble for spherically constrained harmonic models

We build and analytically calculate the Generalised Gibbs Ensemble partition function of the integrable Soft Neumann Model. This is the model of a classical particle which is constrained to move, on average over the initial conditions, on an $N$ dimensional sphere, and feels the effect of anisotropic harmonic potentials. We derive all relevant averaged static observables in the (thermodynamic) $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit. We compare them to their long-term dynamic averages finding excellent agreement in all phases of a non-trivial phase diagram determined by the characteristics of the initial conditions and the amount of energy injected or extracted in an instantaneous quench. We discuss the implications of our results for the proper Neumann model in which the spherical constraint is imposed strictly.

(Non equilibrium) Thermodynamics of Integrable models: The Generalized Gibbs Ensemble description of the classical Neumann Model

We study a classical integrable (Neumann) model describing the motion of a particle on the sphere, subject to harmonic forces. We tackle the problem in the infinite dimensional limit by introducing a soft version in which the spherical constraint is imposed only on average over initial conditions. We show that the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble captures the long-time averages of the soft model. We reveal the full dynamic phase diagram with extended, quasi-condensed, coordinate-, and coordinate and momentum-condensed phases. The scaling properties of the fluctuations allow us to establish in which cases the strict and soft spherical constraints are equivalent, confirming the validity of the GGE hypothesis for the Neumann model on a large portion of the dynamic phase diagram.

Active hard-spheres in infinitely many dimensions

Few equilibrium --even less so nonequilibrium-- statistical-mechanical models with continuous degrees of freedom can be solved exactly. Classical hard-spheres in infinitely many space dimensions are a notable exception. We show that even without resorting to a Boltzmann distribution, dimensionality is a powerful organizing device to explore the stationary properties of active hard-spheres evolving far from equilibrium. In infinite dimensions, we compute exactly the stationary state properties that govern and characterize the collective behavior of active hard-spheres: the structure factor and the equation of state for the pressure. In turn, this allows us to account for motility-induced phase-separation. Finally, we determine the crowding density at which the effective propulsion of a particle vanishes.

Pre-asymptotic dynamics of the infinite size Neumann (p=2 spherical) model

In this contribution we further study the classical disordered p=2 spherical model with Hamiltonian dynamics, or in integrable systems terms, the Neumann model, in the infinite size limit. We summarise the asymptotic results that some of us presented in a recent publication, and we deepen the analysis of the pre-asymptotic dynamics. We also discuss the possible description of the asymptotic steady state with a Generalised Gibbs Ensemble.

Role of initial conditions in the dynamics of quantum glassy systems

We set the formalism to study the way in which the choice of canonical equilibrium initial conditions affect the real-time dynamics of quantum disordered models. We use a path integral formulation on a time contour with real and imaginary time branches. The factorisation of the time-integration paths usually assumed in field-theoretical studies breaks down due to the averaging over quenched randomness. We derive the set of Schwinger-Dyson dynamical equations that govern the evolution of linear response and correlation functions. The solution of these equations is not straightforward as it needs, as an input, the full imaginary-time (or Matsubara frequency) dependence of the correlation in equilibrium. We check some limiting cases (equilibrium dynamics, classical limit) and we set the stage for the analytic and numerical analysis of quenches in random quantum systems.

Quenched dynamics of classical isolated systems: the spherical spin model with two-body random interactions or the Neumann integrable model

We study the Hamiltonian dynamics of the spherical spin model with fully-connected two-body interactions drawn from a Gaussian probability distribution. In the statistical physics framework, the potential energy is of the so-called $p=2$ spherical disordered kind. Most importantly for our setting, the energy conserving dynamics are equivalent to the ones of the Neumann integrable system. We take initial conditions in thermal equilibrium and we subsequently evolve the configurations with Newton dynamics dictated by a different Hamiltonian. We identify three dynamical phases depending on the parameters that characterise the initial state and the final Hamiltonian. We obtain the {\it global} dynamical observables with numerical and analytic methods and we show that, in most cases, they are out of thermal equilibrium. We note, however, that for shallow quenches from the condensed phase the dynamics are close to (though not at) thermal equilibrium. Surprisingly enough, for a particular relation between parameters the global observables comply Gibbs-Boltzmann equilibrium. We next set the analysis of the system with finite number of degrees of freedom in terms of $N$ non-linearly coupled modes. We evaluate the mode temperatures and we relate them to the frequency-dependent effective temperature measured with the fluctuation-dissipation relation in the frequency domain, similarly to what was recently proposed for quantum integrable cases. Finally, we analyse the $N-1$ integrals of motion and we use them to show that the system is out of equilibrium in all phases, even for parameters that show an apparent Gibbs-Boltzmann behaviour of global observables. We elaborate on the role played by these constants of motion in the post-quench dynamics and we briefly discuss the possible description of the asymptotic dynamics in terms of a Generalised Gibbs Ensemble.

Non equilibrium dynamics of isolated disordered systems: the classical Hamiltonian p-spin model

We study the dynamics of a classical disordered macroscopic model completely isolated from the environment reproducing, in a classical setting, the "quantum quench" protocol. We show that, depending on the pre and post quench parameters the system approaches equilibrium, succeeding to act as a bath on itself, or remains out of equilibrium, in two different ways. In one of the latter, the system stays confined in a metastable state in which it undergoes stationary dynamics characterised by a single temperature. In the other, the system ages and its dynamics are characterised by two temperatures associated to observations made at short and long time differences (high and low frequencies). The parameter dependence of the asymptotic states is rationalised in terms of a dynamic phase diagram with one equilibrium and two out of equilibrium phases. Aspects of pre-thermalisation are observed and discussed. Similarities and differences with the dynamics of the dissipative model are also explained.

Dynamical symmetries of Markov processes with multiplicative white noise

We analyse various properties of stochastic Markov processes with multiplicative white noise. We take a single-variable problem as a simple example, and we later extend the analysis to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the stochastic dynamics of a magnetic moment. In particular, we focus on the non-equilibrium transfer of angular momentum to the magnetization from a spin-polarised current of electrons, a technique which is widely used in the context of spintronics to manipulate magnetic moments. We unveil two hidden dynamical symmetries of the generating functionals of these Markovian multiplicative white-noise processes. One symmetry only holds in equilibrium and we use it to prove generic relations such as the fluctuation-dissipation theorems. Out of equilibrium, we take profit of the symmetry-breaking terms to prove fluctuation theorems. The other symmetry yields strong dynamical relations between correlation and response functions which can notably simplify the numerical analysis of these problems. Our construction allows us to clarify some misconceptions on multiplicative white-noise stochastic processes that can be found in the literature. In particular, we show that a first-order differential equation with multiplicative white noise can be transformed into an additive-noise equation, but that the latter keeps a non-trivial memory of the discretisation prescription used to define the former.

Magnetic structures and Z_2 vortices in a non-Abelian gauge model

The magnetic order of the triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions is described by an SO(3) field and allows for the presence of Z2 magnetic vortices as defects. In this work we show how these Z2 vortices can be fitted into a local SU(2) gauge theory. We propose simple Ansatzes for vortex configurations and calculate their energies using well-known results of the Abelian gauge model. We comment on how Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions could be derived from a non-Abelian gauge theory and speculate on their effect on non trivial configurations.

Magnetization dynamics: path-integral formalism for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

We construct a path-integral representation of the generating functional for the dissipative dynamics of a classical magnetic moment as described by the stochastic generalization of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation proposed by Brown, with the possible addition of spin-torque terms. In the process of constructing this functional in the Cartesian coordinate system, we critically revisit this stochastic equation. We present it in a form that accommodates for any discretization scheme thanks to the inclusion of a drift term. The generalized equation ensures the conservation of the magnetization modulus and the approach to the Gibbs-Boltzmann equilibrium in the absence of non-potential and time-dependent forces. The drift term vanishes only if the mid-point Stratonovich prescription is used. We next reset the problem in the more natural spherical coordinate system. We show that the noise transforms non-trivially to spherical coordinates acquiring a non-vanishing mean value in this coordinate system, a fact that has been often overlooked in the literature. We next construct the generating functional formalism in this system of coordinates for any discretization prescription. The functional formalism in Cartesian or spherical coordinates should serve as a starting point to study different aspects of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of magnets. Extensions to colored noise, micro-magnetism and disordered problems are straightforward.

Stochastic dynamics of collective modes for Brownian dipoles

The individual motion of a colloidal particle is described by an overdamped Langevin equation. When rotational degrees of freedom are relevant, these are described by a corresponding Langevin process. Our purpose is to show that the microscopic local density of colloids, in terms of a space and rotation state, also evolves according to a Langevin equation. The latter can then be used as the starting point of a variety of approaches, ranging from dynamical density functional theory to mode-coupling approximations.

Numerical integration of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in generic time-discretisation schemes

We introduce a numerical method to integrate the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in spherical coordinates for generic discretization schemes. This method conserves the magnetization modulus and ensures the approach to equilibrium under the expected conditions. We test the algorithm on a benchmark problem: the dynamics of a uniformly magnetized ellipsoid. We investigate the influence of various parameters, and in particular, we analyze the efficiency of the numerical integration, in terms of the number of steps needed to reach a chosen long time with a given accuracy.

Defining the effective temperature of a quantum driven system from current-current correlation functions

We calculate current-current correlation functions and find an expression for the zero-frequency noise of multiterminal systems driven by harmonically time-dependent voltages within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functions formalism. We also propose a fluctuation-dissipation relation for current-current correlation functions to define an effective temperature. We discuss the behavior of this temperature and compare it with the local temperature determined by a thermometer and with the effective temperature defined from a single-particle fluctuation-dissipation relation. We show that for low frequencies all the definitions of the temperature coincide.

Current-induced switching in transport through anisotropic magnetic molecules

Anisotropic single-molecule magnets may be thought of as molecular switches, with possible applications to molecular spintronics. In this paper, we consider current-induced switching in single-molecule junctions containing an anisotropic magnetic molecule. We assume that the carriers interact with the magnetic molecule through the exchange interaction and focus on the regime of high currents in which the molecular spin dynamics is slow compared to the time which the electrons spend on the molecule. In this limit, the molecular spin obeys a non-equilibrium Langevin equation which takes the form of a generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and which we derive microscopically by means of a non-equilibrium Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We exploit this Langevin equation to identify the relevant switching mechanisms and to derive the current-induced switching rates. As a byproduct, we also derive S-matrix expressions for the various torques entering into the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation which generalize previous expressions in the literature to non-equilibrium situations.

Local Temperatures and Heat Flow in Quantum Driven Systems

We discuss the concept of local temperature for quantum systems driven out of equilibrium by ac pumps showing explicitly that it is the correct indicator for heat flow. We also show that its use allows for a generalization of the Wiedemann Franz law.

Local and Effective Temperatures of Quantum Driven Systems

We introduce thermometers to define the local temperature of an electronic system driven out-of-equilibrium by local AC fields. We also define the effective temperature in terms of a local fluctuation-dissipation-relation. We show that within the weak driving regime these two temperatures coincide. We also discuss the behavior of the local temperature along the sample. We show that it exhibits spatial fluctuations following an oscillatory pattern. For weak driving, regions of the sample become heated, while others become cooled as a consequence of the driving.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin heterostructures

We study heat transport in a one-dimensional inhomogeneous quantum spin 1/2 system. It consists of a finite-size XX spin chain coupled at its ends to semi-infinite XX and XY chains at different temperatures, which play the role of heat and spin reservoirs. After using the Jordan-Wigner transformation we map the original spin Hamiltonian into a fermionic Hamiltonian, which contains normal and pairing terms. We find the expressions for the heat currents and solve the problem with a non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. We analyze the behavior of the heat currents as functions of the model parameters. When finite magnetic fields are applied at the two reservoirs, the system exhibits rectification effects in the heat flow.
