Approximation of a Reifenberg-flat set by a smooth surface

We show that if $E ı\R^n$ is a Reifenberg flat set $E$ of dimension $d$ at scale $r_0$, we can find a smooth surface $Σ_0$ of dimension $d$ which is close to $E$ at the scale $r_0$. When $E$ is a Reifenberg flat set, this allows us to apply a result of G. David and T. Toro [Memoirs of the AMS 215 (2012), 1012], and get a bi-Hölder homeomorphism of $\R^n$ that sends $Σ_0$ to $E$. If in addition $d=n-1$ and $E$ is compact and connected, then $Σ_0$ is orientable, and $\R^n \sm E$ has exactly two connected components, which we can approximate from the inside by smooth domains.

A constructive proof of the Assouad embedding theorem with bounds on the dimension

We give a constructive proof of a theorem of Naor and Neiman, (to appear, Revista Matematica Iberoamercana), which asserts that if $(E,d)$ is a doubling metric space, there is an integer $N > 0$, that depends only on the metric doubling constant, such that for each exponent $α\in (1/2,1)$, we can find a bilipschitz mapping $F = (E,d^α) \to \R^N$.

Rectifiability of Self-contracted curves in the Euclidean space and applications

It is hereby established that, in Euclidean spaces of finite dimension, bounded self-contracted curves have finite length. This extends the main result of Daniilidis, Ley, and Sabourau (J. Math. Pures Appl. 2010) concerning continuous planar self-contracted curves to any dimension, and dispenses entirely with the continuity requirement. The proof borrows heavily from a geometric idea of Manselli and Pucci (Geom. Dedicata 1991) employed for the study of regular enough curves, and can be seen as a nonsmooth adaptation of the latter, albeit a nontrivial one. Applications to continuous and discrete dynamical systems are discussed: continuous self-contracted curves appear as generalized solutions of nonsmooth convex foliation systems, recovering a hidden regularity after reparameterization, as consequence of our main result. In the discrete case, proximal sequences (obtained through implicit discretization of a gradient system) give rise to polygonal self-contracted curves. This yields a straightforward proof for the convergence of the exact proximal algorithm, under any choice of parameters.

Should we solve Plateau's problem again?

After a short description of various classical solutions of Plateau's problem, we discuss other ways to model soap films, and some of the related questions that are left open. A little more attention is payed to a more specific model, with deformations and sliding boundary conditions.

Reifenberg Parameterizations for Sets with Holes

We extend the proof of Reifenberg's Topological Disk Theorem to allow the case of sets with holes, and give sufficient conditions on a set $E$ for the existence of a bi-Lipschitz parameterization of $E$ by a $d$-dimensional plane or smooth manifold. Such a condition is expressed in terms of square summability for the P. Jones numbers $β_1(x,r)$. In particular, it applies in the locally Ahlfors-regular case to provide very big pieces of bi-Lipschitz images of $\R^d$.

$C^{1+α}$-Regularity for Two-Dimensional Almost-Minimal Sets in $\R^n$

We give a new proof and a partial generalization of Jean Taylor's result [Ta] that says that Almgren almost-minimal sets of dimension 2 in $\R^3$ are locally $C^{1+α}$-equivalent to minimal cones. The proof is rather elementary, but uses a local separation result proved in [D3] and an extension of Reifenberg's parameterization theorem [DDT]. The key idea is still that if $X$ is the cone over an arc of small Lipschitz graph in the unit sphere, but $X$ is not contained in a disk, we can use the graph of a harmonic function to deform $X$ and diminish substantially its area. The local separation result is used to reduce to unions of cones over arcs of Lipschitz graphs. A good part of the proof extends to minimal sets of dimension 2 in $\R^n$, but in this setting our final regularity result on $E$ may depend on the list of minimal cones obtained as blow-up limits of $E$ at a point.

Hölder Regularity of Two-Dimensional Almost-Minimal Sets in $\R^n$

We give a different and probably more elementary proof of a good part of Jean Taylor's regularity theorem for Almgren almost-minimal sets of dimension 2 in $\R^3$. We use this opportunity to settle some details about almost-minimal sets, extend a part of Taylor's result to almost-minimal sets of dimension 2 in $\R^n$, and give the expected characterization of the closed sets $E$ of dimension 2 in $\R^3$ that are minimal, in the sense that $H^2(E\setminus F) \leq H^2(F\setminus E)$ for every closed set $F$ such that there is a bounded set $B$ so that $F=E$ out of $B$ and $F$ separates points of $\R^3 \setminus B$ that $E$ separates.
