Directed Random Market: the equilibrium distribution

We find the explicit expression for the equilibrium wealth distribution of the Directed Random Market process, recently introduced by Martínez-Martínez and López-Ruiz, which turns out to be a Gamma distribution with shape parameter $\frac{1}{2}$. We also prove the convergence of the discrete-time process describing the evolution of the distribution of wealth to the equilibrium distribution.

Existence of periodic solutions for the periodically forced SIR model

We prove that the seasonally-forced SIR model with a T-periodic forcing has a periodic solution with period T whenever the basic reproductive number R0>1. The proof uses the Leray-Schauder degree theory. We also describe some numerical results in which we compute the T-periodic solution, where in order to obtain the T-periodic solution when the behavior of the system is subharmonic or chaotic, we use a Galerkin scheme.

Eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators: A comparison of two approaches

The central problem we consider is the distribution of eigenvalues of closed linear operators which are not selfadjoint, with a focus on those operators which are obtained as perturbations of selfadjoint linear operators. Two methods are explained and elaborated. One approach uses complex analysis to study a holomorphic function whose zeros can be identified with the eigenvalues of the linear operator. The second method is an operator theoretic approach involving the numerical range. General results obtained by the two methods are derived and compared. Applications to non-selfadjoint Jacobi and Schrödinger operators are considered. Some possible directions for future research are discussed.

Asymptotic behavior of random walks on a half-line with a jump at the origin

We study a discrete-time random walk on the non-negative integers, such that when 0 is reached a jump occurs to an arbitrary location, with given probabilities. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the expected position at large times, in dependence on the jump probabilities and on the starting position. Our proof of this result displays the relevance of the spectral analysis of the transition operator associated to the stochastic process, both of its eigenvalues and of its resonances.

On the discrete spectrum of non-selfadjoint operators

We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint unbounded operators obtained from selfadjoint operators by a perturbation that is relatively-Schatten. These bounds are applied to obtain new results on the distribution of eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with complex potentials.

Inequalities for the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint Jacobi operators

We prove Lieb-Thirring-type bounds on eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint Jacobi operators, which are nearly as strong as those proven previously for the case of selfadjoint operators by Hundertmark and Simon. We use a method based on determinants of operators and on complex function theory, extending and sharpening earlier work of Borichev, Golinskii and Kupin.

Synchronization of oscillators coupled through an environment

We study synchronization of oscillators that are indirectly coupled through their interaction with an environment. We give criteria for the stability or instability of a synchronized oscillation. Using these criteria we investigate synchronization of systems of oscillators which are weakly coupled, in the sense that the influence of the oscillators on the environment is weak. We prove that arbitrarily weak coupling will synchronize the oscillators, provided that this coupling is of the 'right' sign. We illustrate our general results by applications to a model of coupled GnRH neuron oscillators proposed by Khadra and Li, and to indirectly weakly-coupled lambda-omega oscillators

Long-time limit for a class of quadratic infinite-dimensional dynamical systems inspired by models of viscoelastic fluids

We study a class of quadratic, infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, inspired by models for viscoelastic fluids. We prove that these equations define a semi-flow on the cone of positive, essentially bounded functions. As time tends to infinity, the solutions tend to an equilibrium manifold in the $L^2$-norm. Convergence to a particular function on the equilibrium manifold is only proved under additional assumptions. We discuss several possible generalizations.

Periodic travelling waves in the theta model for synaptically connected neurons

We study periodic travelling waves in the Theta model for a linear continuum of synaptically-interacting neurons. We prove that when the neurons are oscillatory, at least one periodic travelling of every wave number always exists. In the case of excitable neurons, we prove that no periodic travelling waves exist when the synaptic coupling is weak, and at least two periodic travelling waves of each wave-number, a `fast' one and a `slow' one, exist when the synaptic coupling is sufficiently strong. We derive explicit upper and lower bounds for the `critical' coupling strength as well as for the wave velocities. We also study the limits of large wave-number and of small wave-number, in which results which are independent of the form of the synaptic-coupling kernel can be obtained. Results of numerical computations of the periodic travelling waves are also presented.

Rotating waves in the Theta model for a ring of synaptically connected neurons

We study rotating waves in the Theta model for a ring of synaptically-interacting neurons. We prove that when the neurons are oscillatory, at least one rotating wave always exists. In the case of excitable neurons, we prove that no travelling waves exist when the synaptic coupling is weak, and at least two rotating waves, a `fast' one and a `slow' one, exist when the synaptic coupling is sufficiently strong. We derive explicit upper and lower bounds for the `critical' coupling strength as well as for wave velocities. We also study the special case of uniform coupling, in which complete analytical results on the rotating waves can be achieved.

Synchronization in model networks of class I neurons

We study a modification of the canonical model for networks of class I neurons, presented by Hoppensteadt and Izhikevich, in which the 'pulse' emitted by a neuron is smooth rather than a delta-function. We prove two types of results about synchronization and desynchronization of such networks, the first type pertaining to 'pulse' functions which are symmetric, and the other type in the regime in which each neuron is connected to many other neurons.
