Improved lower bounds on the maximum size of graphs with girth 5

We present a new algorithm for improving lower bounds on $ex(n;\{C_3,C_4\})$, the maximum size (number of edges) of an $n$-vertex graph of girth at least 5. The core of our algorithm is a variant of a hill-climbing heuristic introduced by Exoo, McKay, Myrvold and Nadon (2011) to find small cages. Our algorithm considers a range of values of $n$ in multiple passes. In each pass, the hill-climbing heuristic for a specific value of $n$ is initialized with a few graphs obtained by modifying near-extremal graphs previously found for neighboring values of $n$, allowing to `propagate' good patterns that were found. Focusing on the range $n\in \{74,75, \dots, 198\}$, which is currently beyond the scope of exact methods, our approach yields improvements on existing lower bounds for $ex(n;\{C_3,C_4\})$ for all $n$ in the range, except for two values of $n$ ($n=96,97$).

An improved bound on the treewidth of planar graphs excluding a grid minor

We show that every planar graph with no $t \times t$ grid minor has treewidth at most $4t +4$. This improves on the previously best known bound of $\frac{9}{2}t - \frac{11}{2}$, due to Gu and Tamaki (2012), and is within a factor $2$ of optimal. A key step in the proof is showing the following result, which might be of independent interest: Every $2$-connected plane graph $G$ with radius $d$ and faces of size at most $k$ has a tree-decomposition of width at most $\max\{3d+ k+5, 2d+2k+1\}$ such that the vertex set of every face of $G$ is contained in some bag.

Induced Forest Minor Theorem for Graphs Without an Induced Star

Motivated by recent work on tree independence number, we study the path independence number of a graph $G$: the minimum integer $k$ such that there is a path decomposition of $G$ where each bag induces a graph with independence number at most $k$. We show that every graph excluding both an induced forest minor and an induced star has bounded path independence number. This characterises when a graph class that excludes an induced star has bounded path independence number while also partially resolving a conjecture of Dallard, Krnc, Kwon, Milani{č}, Munaro, Štorgel and Wiederrecht (2024). Furthermore, we show that graphs excluding both an apex-forest induced minor and an induced star have bounded tree independence number. As a consequence, for every fixed apex-forest $H$ and integer $t$, there is a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a $K_{1,t}$-induced-subgraph-free graph contains $H$ as an induced minor. Moreover, it follows that the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem, as well as several other NP-hard problems, can be solved in polynomial-time on $K_{1,t}$-induced-subgraph-free graphs that exclude $H$ as an induced minor.

An Induced $A$-Path Theorem

Given a graph $G$ and $\mathcal{A}\subseteq V(G)$, a classical theorem of Gallai (1964) states that for every positive integer $k$, the graph $G$ contains $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint $\mathcal{A}$-paths, or a set $Z\subseteq V(G)$ of size at most $2(k-1)$ such that $G-Z$ contains no $\mathcal{A}$-paths. We generalise Gallai's theorem to the induced setting: We prove that $G$ contains $k$ pairwise anti-complete $\mathcal{A}$-paths, or a set $Z$ of size at most $54(k-1)$ such that, after removing the closed neighbourhood of $Z$, the resulting graph has no $\mathcal{A}$-path. Here, two paths are anti-complete if they are vertex disjoint and there is no edge in $G$ having one endpoint in each of them. We further show that the bound $54(k-1)$ on the size of $Z$ can be reduced to $4(k-1)$ if one removes the balls of radius $4$ around the vertices of $Z$ (instead of radius $1$), which is within a factor $2$ of optimal. We also establish analogous results for long induced $\mathcal{A}$-paths.

Erdős-Pósa property of rooted tree minors

Fiorini, Joret, and Wood (2013) showed that tree minors satisfy the so-called Erdős-Pósa property with a linear bound: For every tree $T$ there exists a constant $c \geq 1$ such that, for every graph $G$ and integer $k\geq 0$, either $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs each containing a $T$-minor, or $G$ has a set $X$ of at most $c k$ vertices such that $G-X$ has no $T$-minor. In this paper, we prove that the same result remains true if, given a subset $S$ of vertices of $G$, one only considers $T$-minors of $G$ that are rooted in $S$. Here, a $T$-minor is rooted in $S$ if there is a minor-model of $T$ where each branch set contains a vertex from $S$. This result can be seen as a generalization of the classical $S$-Path Theorem of Gallai, which corresponds to the case $T=K_2$. The upper bound on the size of $X$ is best possible up to the value of the constant $c$, and improves on an earlier $O(k^2)$ bound due to Hodor, La, Micek, and Rambaud (2026).

Adjacency labelling for proper minor-closed graph classes

We show that every proper minor-closed class of graphs admits a $(1+o(1))\log_2 n$-bit adjacency labelling scheme. Equivalently, for every proper minor-closed class $\mathcal{G}$ and every positive integer $n$ there exists an $n^{1+o(1)}$-vertex graph $U$ such that every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of $U$. Both results are optimal up to the lower order term. They generalize the corresponding results for planar graphs and apex-minor-free classes (Dujmović et al., J.~ACM 2021) to all proper minor-closed classes, answering the open question raised in that paper and anticipated earlier by Bonamy, Gavoille, and Pilipczuk (SODA 2020).

Far-apart Erdős--Pósa property of long cycles

We prove that there exist functions $f:\mathbb N^2\to\mathbb N$ and $g:\mathbb N\to\mathbb N$ such that for all positive integers $k$, $d$, and $\ell\ge3$, every graph $G$ either contains $k$ cycles of length at least $\ell$ that are pairwise at distance greater than $d$, or admits a subset of vertices $X$ with $|X|\le f(k,\ell)$ such that $G-B_G(X,g(d))$ contains no cycle of length at least $\ell$, where $B_G(X,r)$ denotes the ball of radius $r$ around $X$. This generalizes a theorem of Dujmović, Joret, Micek, and Morin (2024), which established the $\ell=3$ case. Moreover, we prove that the theorem holds with $f(k,\ell)\in\mathcal{O}(\ell k\log k)$ and $g(d)\in\mathcal{O}(d)$. The linear bound on $g$ is best possible, while the bound on $f$ is optimal as a function of $k$ for every fixed $\ell$. In particular, for $\ell=3$ our result improves the previous bound of $\mathcal{O}(k^{18}\mathsf{polylog} k)$ by Dujmović et al.

The grid-minor theorem revisited

We prove that for every planar graph $X$ of treedepth $h$, there exists a positive integer $c$ such that for every $X$-minor-free graph $G$, there exists a graph $H$ of treewidth at most $f(h)$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes K_c$. This is a qualitative strengthening of the Grid-Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour (JCTB 1986), and treedepth is the optimal parameter in such a result. As an example application, we use this result to improve the upper bound for weak coloring numbers of graphs excluding a fixed graph as a minor.

Erdős--Pósa property of cycles that are far apart

We prove that there exist functions $f,g:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ such that for all nonnegative integers $k$ and $d$, for every graph $G$, either $G$ contains $k$ cycles such that vertices of different cycles have distance greater than $d$ in $G$, or there exists a subset $X$ of vertices of $G$ with $|X|\leq f(k)$ such that $G-B_G(X,g(d))$ is a forest, where $B_G(X,r)$ denotes the set of vertices of $G$ having distance at most $r$ from a vertex of $X$.

Blow-up structure of graphs excluding a tree or an apex-tree as a minor

We prove blow-up structure theorems for graphs excluding a tree or an apex-tree as a minor. First, we show that for every $t$-vertex tree $T$ with $t\geq 3$ and radius $h$, and every graph $G$ excluding $T$ as a minor, there exists a graph $H$ with pathwidth at most $2h-1$ such that $G$ is contained in $H\boxtimes K_{t-2}$ as a subgraph. This improves on a recent theorem of Dujmović, Hickingbotham, Joret, Micek, Morin, and Wood (2024), who proved the same result but with a larger bound on the order of the complete graph in the product. Second, we show that for every $t$-vertex tree $T$ with $t\geq 2$, radius $h$ and maximum degree $d$, and every graph $G$ excluding the apex-tree $T^+$ as a minor, where $T^+$ is the tree obtained by adding a universal vertex to $T$, there exists a graph $H$ with treewidth at most $4h-1$ such that $G$ is contained in $H\boxtimes K_{2(t-1)d}$. The bound on the treewidth of $H$ is best possible up to a factor $2$, and improves on a $2^{h+2}-4$ bound that follows from a recent result of Dujmović, Hickingbotham, Hodor, Joret, La, Micek, Morin, Rambaud, and Wood (2024).

Tree decompositions whose trees are subgraphs: An application of Simon's factorization

We show that every connected graph $G$ has a tree decomposition indexed by a tree $T$ such that $T$ is a subgraph of $G$ and the width of the tree decomposition is bounded from above by a function of the pathwidth of $G$. This answers a question of Blanco, Cook, Hatzel, Hilaire, Illingworth, and McCarty (2024), who proved that it is not possible to have such a tree decomposition whose width is bounded by a function of the treewidth of $G$. The proof relies on Simon's Factorization Theorem for finite semigroups, a tool that has already been applied successfully in various areas of graph theory and combinatorics in recent years. Our application is particularly simple and can serve as a good introduction to this technique.

Cops and robber in graphs with bounded vertex cover number

Meyniel's conjecture states that $n$-vertex connected graphs have cop number $O(\sqrt{n})$. The current best known upper bound is $n/2^{(1-o(1))\sqrt{\log n}}$, proved independently by Lu and Peng (2011), and by Scott and Sudakov (2011). In this paper, we extend their result by showing that every connected graph with vertex cover number $k$ has cop number at most $k/2^{(1-o(1))\sqrt{\log k}}$. This is the first sublinear upper bound on the cop number in terms of the vertex cover number.

Planar graphs in blowups of fans

We show that every $n$-vertex planar graph is contained in the graph obtained from a fan by blowing up each vertex by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. Equivalently, every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set $X$ of $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$ vertices such that $G-X$ has bandwidth $O(\sqrt{n}\log^2 n)$. We in fact prove the same result for any proper minor-closed class, and we prove more general results that explore the trade-off between $X$ and the bandwidth of $G-X$. The proofs use three key ingredients. The first is a new local sparsification lemma, which shows that every $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ has a set of $O((n\log n)/δ)$ vertices whose removal results in a graph with local density at most $δ$. The second is a generalization of a method of Feige and Rao that relates bandwidth and local density using volume-preserving Euclidean embeddings. The third ingredient is graph products, which are a key tool in the extension to any proper minor-closed class.

Excluding an apex-forest or a fan as quickly as possible

We show that every graph $G$ excluding an apex-forest $H$ as a minor has layered pathwidth at most $|V(H)|-2$, and that every graph $G$ excluding an apex-linear forest (such as a fan) $H$ as a minor has layered treedepth at most $|V(H)|-2$. We further show that both bounds are optimal. These results improve on recent results of Hodor, La, Micek, and Rambaud (2025): The first result improves the previous best-known bound by a multiplicative factor of $2$, while the second strengthens a previous quadratic bound. In addition, we reduce from quadratic to linear the bound on the $S$-focused treedepth $\mathrm{td}(G,S)$ for graphs $G$ with a prescribed set of vertices $S$ excluding models of paths in which every branch set intersects~$S$.

Integer programs with nearly totally unimodular matrices: the cographic case

It is a notorious open question whether integer programs (IPs), with an integer coefficient matrix $M$ whose subdeterminants are all bounded by a constant $Δ$ in absolute value, can be solved in polynomial time. We answer this question in the affirmative if we further require that, by removing a constant number of rows and columns from $M$, one obtains a submatrix $A$ that is the transpose of a network matrix. Our approach focuses on the case where $A$ arises from $M$ after removing $k$ rows only, where $k$ is a constant. We achieve our result in two main steps, the first related to the theory of IPs and the second related to graph minor theory. First, we derive a strong proximity result for the case where $A$ is a general totally unimodular matrix: Given an optimal solution of the linear programming relaxation, an optimal solution to the IP can be obtained by finding a constant number of augmentations by circuits of $[A\; I]$. Second, for the case where $A$ is transpose of a network matrix, we reformulate the problem as a maximum constrained integer potential problem on a graph $G$. We observe that if $G$ is $2$-connected, then it has no rooted $K_{2,t}$-minor for $t = Ω(k Δ)$. We leverage this to obtain a tree-decomposition of $G$ into highly structured graphs for which we can solve the problem locally. This allows us to solve the global problem via dynamic programming.

Cliquewidth and dimension

We prove that every poset with bounded cliquewidth and with sufficiently large dimension contains the standard example of dimension $k$ as a subposet. This applies in particular to posets whose cover graphs have bounded treewidth, as the cliquewidth of a poset is bounded in terms of the treewidth of the cover graph. For the latter posets, we prove a stronger statement: every such poset with sufficiently large dimension contains the Kelly example of dimension $k$ as a subposet. Using this result, we obtain a full characterization of the minor-closed graph classes $\mathcal{C}$ such that posets with cover graphs in $\mathcal{C}$ have bounded dimension: they are exactly the classes excluding the cover graph of some Kelly example. Finally, we consider a variant of poset dimension called Boolean dimension, and we prove that posets with bounded cliquewidth have bounded Boolean dimension. The proofs rely on Colcombet's deterministic version of Simon's factorization theorem, which is a fundamental tool in formal language and automata theory, and which we believe deserves a wider recognition in structural and algorithmic graph theory.

Shallow brambles

A graph class $\mathcal{C}$ has polynomial expansion if there is a polynomial function $f$ such that for every graph $G\in \mathcal{C}$, each of the depth-$r$ minors of $G$ has average degree at most $f(r)$. In this note, we study bounded-radius variants of some classical graph parameters such as bramble number, linkedness and well-linkedness, and we show that they are pairwise polynomially related. Furthermore, in a monotone graph class with polynomial expansion they are all uniformly bounded by a polynomial in $r$.
