Integral Representations of Three Novel Multiple Zeta Functions for Barnes Type: A Probabilistic Approach

Integral representation is one of the powerful tools for studying analytic continuation of the zeta functions. It is known that Hurwitz zeta function generalizes the famous Riemann zeta function which plays an important role in analytic number theory. They both have several multiple versions in the literature. In this paper, we introduce three novel multiple zeta functions for Barnes type and study their integral representations through hyperbolic probability distributions given by Pitman and Yor(Canad. J. Math., 55 (2003), 292--330). The analytically continued properties of the three multiple zeta functions are also investigated. The first one generalizes the well-known Barnes multiple zeta function, while the second and the third, unlike the previous results, can extend analytically to entire functions in the whole complex plane. These are somewhat surprising results.

New Sufficient Conditions for Moment-determinacy via Probability Density Tails

One of the ways to characterize a probability distribution is to show that it is moment-determinate, uniquely determined by knowing all its moments. The uniqueness, in the absolutely continuous case, depends entirely on the behaviour of the tails of the density function f. We find and exploit a condition, (D), in terms only of f which is of a `general' form and easy to check. Condition (D), showing the `speed' for f to tend to zero, is sufficient to conclude the moment determinacy. We establish a series of theorems and corollaries in both Stieltjes and Hamburger cases and provide an interesting illustrative example. The results in this paper are either new or extend some recently published results.

EM Estimation of the B-Spline Copula with Penalized Pseudo-Likelihood Functions

The B-spline copula function is defined by a linear combination of elements of the normalized B-spline basis. We develop a modified EM algorithm, to maximize the penalized pseudo-likelihood function, wherein we use the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty function for the penalization term. We conduct simulation studies to demonstrate the stability of the proposed numerical procedure, show that penalization yields estimates with smaller mean-square errors when the true parameter matrix is sparse, and provide methods for determining tuning parameters and for model selection. We analyze as an example a data set consisting of birth and death rates from 237 countries, available at the website, ''Our World in Data,'' and we estimate the marginal density and distribution functions of those rates together with all parameters of our B-spline copula model.

New Characterizations of the Gamma Distribution via Independence of Two Statistics by Using Anosov's Theorem

Available in the literature are properties which characterize the gamma distribution via independence of two appropriately chosen statistics. Well-known is the classical result when one of the statistics is the sample mean and the other one the sample coefficient of variation. In this paper, we elaborate on a version of Anosov's theorem which allows to establish a general result, Theorem 1, and a series of seven corollaries providing new characterization results for gamma distributions. We keep the sample mean as one of involved statistics, while now the second one can be taken from a quite large class of homogeneous feasible definite statistics. It is relevant to mention that there is an interesting parallel between the new characterization results for gamma distributions and recent characterization results for the normal distribution.

Characterizations of the Normal Distribution via the Independence of the Sample Mean and the Feasible Definite Statistics with Ordered Arguments

It is well known that the independence of the sample mean and the sample variance characterizes the normal distribution. By using Anosov's theorem, we further investigate the analogous characteristic properties in terms of the sample mean and some feasible definite statistics. The latter statistics introduced in this paper for the first time are based on nonnegative, definite and continuous functions of ordered arguments with positive degree of homogeneity. The proposed approach seems to be natural and can be used to derive easily characterization results for many feasible definite statistics, such as known characterizations involving the sample variance, sample range as well as Gini's mean difference.

An Identity for Two Integral Transforms Applied to the Uniqueness of a Distribution via its Laplace-Stieltjes Transform

It is well known that the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of a nonnegative random variable (or random vector) uniquely determines its distribution function. We extend this uniqueness theorem by using the Muntz-Szasz Theorem and the identity for the Laplace-Stieltjes and Laplace-Carson transforms of a distribution function. The latter appears for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In particular, if X and Y are two nonnegative random variables with joint distribution H, then H can be characterized by a suitable set of countably many values of its bivariate Laplace-Stieltjes transform. The general high-dimensional case is also investigated. Besides, Lerch's uniqueness theorem for conventional Laplace transforms is extended as well. The identity can be used to simplify the calculation of Laplace-Stieltjes transforms when the underlying distributions have singular parts. Finally, some examples are given to illustrate the characterization results via the uniqueness theorem.

Characterization of Probability Distributions via Functional Equations of Power-Mixture Type

We study power-mixture type functional equations in terms of Laplace-Stieltjes transforms of probability distributions. These equations arise when studying distributional equations of the type Z = X + TZ, where T is a known random variable, while the variable Z is defined via X, and we want to `find' X. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such functional equations to have unique solutions. The uniqueness is equivalent to a characterization property of a probability distribution. We present results which are either new or extend and improve previous results about functional equations of compound-exponential and compound-Poisson types. In particular, we give another affirmative answer to a question posed by J. Pitman and M. Yor in 2003. We provide explicit illustrative examples and deal with related topics.

New Checkable Conditions for Moment Determinacy of Probability Distributions

We have analyzed some conditions which are essentially involved in deciding whether or not a probability distribution is unique (moment-determinate) or non-unique (moment-indeterminate) by its moments. We suggest new conditions concerning both absolutely continuous and discrete distributions. By using the new conditions, which are easily checkable, we either establish new results, or extend previous ones in both Hamburger case (distributions on the whole real line) and Stieltjes case (distributions on the positive half-line). Specific examples illustrate both the results and the relationship between the new conditions and previously available conditions.

Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Unique Solution to Functional Equations of Poincare Type

Distributional equation is an important tool in the characterization theory because many characteristic properties of distributions can be transferred to such equations. Using a novel and natural approach, we retreat a remarkable distributional equation whose corresponding functional equation in terms of Laplace-Stieltjes transform is of the Poincare type. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the equation to have a unique distributional solution with finite variance are provided. This complements the previous results which involve at most the mean of the distributional solution. Besides, more general distributional (or functional) equations are investigated as well.

Dependence Properties of B-Spline Copulas

We construct by using B-spline functions a class of copulas that includes the Bernstein copulas arising in Baker's distributions. The range of correlation of the B-spline copulas is examined, and the Frechet--Hoeffding upper bound is proved to be attained when the number of B-spline functions goes to infinity. As the B-spline functions are well-known to be an order-complete weak Tchebycheff system from which the property of total positivity of any order follows for the maximum correlation case, the results given here extend classical results for the Bernstein copulas. In addition, we derive in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind an explicit formula for the moments of the related B-spline functions for nonnegative real numbers.

Absolute moments in terms of characteristic functions

The absolute moments of probability distributions are much more complicated than conventional ones. By using a direct and simpler approach, we retreat P. L. Hsu's (1951, J. Chinese Math. Soc., Vol. 1, pp. 257-280) formulas in terms of the characteristic function (which have been ignored in the literature) and provide some new results as well. The case of nonnegative random variables is also investigated through both characteristic function and Laplace-Stieltjes transform. Besides, we prove that the distribution of a nonnegative random variable with a finite fractional moment can be completely determined by a proper subset of the translated fractional moments. This improves significantly P. Hall's (1983, Z. W., Vol. 62, 355-359) result for distributions on the right-half line.

On Powers of the Catalan Number Sequence

The Catalan number sequence is one of the most famous number sequences in combinatorics and is well studied in the literature. In this paper we further investigate its fundamental properties related to the moment problem and prove for the first time that it is an infinitely divisible Stieltjes moment sequence in the sense of S.-G. Tyan. Besides, any positive real power of the sequence is still a Stieltjes determinate sequence. Some more cases including (a) the central binomial coefficient sequence (related to the Catalan sequence), (b) a double factorial number sequence and (c) the generalized Catalan (or Fuss-Catalan) sequence are also investigated. Finally, we pose two conjectures including the determinacy equivalence between powers of nonnegative random variables and powers of their moment sequences, which is supported by some existing results.

Characterizations of the Logistic and Related Distributions

It is known that few characterization results of the logistic distribution were available before, although it is similar in shape to the normal one whose characteristic properties have been well investigated. Fortunately, in the last decade, several authors have made great progress in this topic. Some interesting characterization results of the logistic distribution have been developed recently. In this paper, we further provide some new results by the distributional equalities in terms of order statistics of the underlying distribution and the random exponential shifts. The characterization of the closely related Pareto type II distribution is also investigated.

The Bivariate Lack-of-Memory Distributions

We treat all the bivariate lack-of-memory (BLM) distributions in a unified approach and develop some new general properties of the BLM distributions, including joint moment generating function, product moments and dependence structure. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the survival functions of BLM distributions to be totally positive of order two are given. Some previous results about specific BLM distributions are improved. In particular, we show that both the Marshall--Olkin survival copula and survival function are totally positive of all orders, regardless of parameters. Besides, we point out that Slepian's inequality also holds true for BLM distributions.

Recent Developments on the Moment Problem

We consider univariate distributions with finite moments of all positive orders. The moment problem is to determine whether or not a given distribution is uniquely determined by the sequence of its moments. There is a huge literature on this classical topic. In this survey, we will focus only on the recent developments on the checkable moment-(in)determinacy criteria including Cramer's condition, Carleman's condition, Hardy's condition, Krein's condition and the growth rate of moments, which help us solve the problem more easily. Both Hamburger and Stieltjes cases are investigated. The former is concerned with distributions on the whole real line, while the latter deals only with distributions on the right half-line. Some new results or new simple (direct) proofs of previous criteria are provided. Finally, we review the most recent moment problem for products of independent random variables with different distributions, which occur naturally in stochastic modelling of complex random phenomena.

Moment Determinacy of Powers and Products of Nonnegative Random Variables

We find conditions which guarantee moment (in)determinacy of powers and products of nonnegative random variables. We establish new and general results which are based either on the rate of growth of the moments of a random variable or on conditions about the distribution itself. For the class of generalized gamma random variables we show that the power and the product of such variables share the same moment determinacy property. A similar statement holds for half-logistic random variables. Besides answering new questions in this area, we either extend some previously known results or provide new and transparent proofs of existing results.

On the Moment Determinacy of Products of Non-identically Distributed Random Variables

We show first that there are intrinsic relationships among different conditions, old and recent, which lead to some general statements in both the Stieltjes and the Hamburger moment problems. Then we describe checkable conditions and prove new results about the moment (in)determinacy for products of independent and non-identically distributed random variables. We treat all three cases when the random variables are nonnegative (Stieltjes case), when they take values in the whole real line (Hamburger case), and the mixed case. As an illustration we characterize the moment determinacy of products of random variables whose distributions are generalized gamma or double generalized gamma all with distinct shape parameters. Among other corollaries, the product of two independent random variables, one exponential and one inverse Gaussian, is moment determinate, while the product is moment indeterminate for the cases: one exponential and one normal, one chi-square and one normal, and one inverse Gaussian and one normal.

EM algorithms for estimating the Bernstein copula

A method that uses order statistics to construct multivariate distributions with fixed marginals and which utilizes a representation of the Bernstein copula in terms of a finite mixture distribution is proposed. Expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms to estimate the Bernstein copula are proposed, and a local convergence property is proved. Moreover, asymptotic properties of the proposed semiparametric estimators are provided. Illustrative examples are presented using three real data sets and a 3-dimensional simulated data set. These studies show that the Bernstein copula is able to represent various distributions flexibly and that the proposed EM algorithms work well for such data.
