A new family of isolated symplectic singularities with trivial local fundamental group

We construct a new infinite family of 4-dimensional isolated symplectic singularities with trivial local fundamental group, answering a question of Beauville raised in 2000. Three constructions are presented for this family: (1) as singularities in blowups of the quotient of $\mathbb{C}^4$ by the dihedral group of order $2d$, (2) as singular points of Calogero-Moser spaces associated with dihedral groups of order $2d$ at equal parameters, (3) as singularities of a certain Slodowy slice in the $d$-fold cover of the nilpotent cone in ${\mathfrak{sl}}_d$.

Symplectic resolutions of character varieties

In this article we consider the connected component of the identity of $G$-character varieties of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g > 0$, for connected complex reductive groups $G$ of type $A$ (e.g., $SL_n$ and $GL_n$). We show that these varieties are symplectic singularities and classify which admit symplectic resolutions. The classification reduces to the semi-simple case, where we show that a resolution exists if and only if either $g=1$ and $G$ is a product of special linear groups of any rank and copies of the group $PGL_2$, or if $g=2$ and $G = (SL_2)^m$ for some $m$.

Towards the classification of symplectic linear quotient singularities admitting a symplectic resolution

Over the past two decades, there has been much progress on the classification of symplectic linear quotient singularities V/G admitting a symplectic (equivalently, crepant) resolution of singularities. The classification is almost complete but there is an infinite series of groups in dimension 4 - the symplectically primitive but complex imprimitive groups - and 10 exceptional groups up to dimension 10, for which it is still open. In this paper, we treat the remaining infinite series and prove that for all but possibly 39 cases there is no symplectic resolution. We thereby reduce the classification problem to finitely many open cases. We furthermore prove non-existence of a symplectic resolution for one exceptional group, leaving 39+9=48 open cases in total. We do not expect any of the remaining cases to admit a symplectic resolution.

Projective generation for equivariant $D$-modules

We investigate compact projective generators in the category of equivariant $D$-modules on a smooth affine variety. For a reductive group $G$ acting on a smooth affine variety $X$, there is a natural countable set of compact projective generators indexed by finite dimensional representations of $G$. We show that only finitely many of these objects are required to generate; thus the category has a single compact projective generator. The proof in the general case goes via an analogous statement about compact generators in the equivariant derived category, which holds in much greater generality and may be of independent interest. We also provide an alternative (more elementary) proof in the case that $G$ is a torus.

Birational geometry of symplectic quotient singularities

For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and for $n\geq 1$, we use variation of GIT quotient for Nakajima quiver varieties to study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the minimal resolution $S$ of the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$. It is well known that $X:=\mathrm{Hilb}^{[n]}(S)$ is a projective, crepant resolution of the symplectic singularity $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$, where $Γ_n=Γ\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the wreath product. We prove that every projective, crepant resolution of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$ can be realised as the fine moduli space of $θ$-stable $Π$-modules for a fixed dimension vector, where $Π$ is the framed preprojective algebra of $Γ$ and $θ$ is a choice of generic stability condition. Our approach uses the linearisation map from GIT to relate wall crossing in the space of $θ$-stability conditions to birational transformations of $X$ over $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$. As a corollary, we describe completely the ample and movable cones of $X$ over $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$, and show that the Mori chamber decomposition of the movable cone is determined by an extended Catalan hyperplane arrangement of the ADE root system associated to $Γ$ by the McKay correspondence. In the appendix, we show that morphisms of quiver varieties induced by variation of GIT quotient are semismall, generalising a result of Nakajima in the case where the quiver variety is smooth.

On symplectic resolutions and factoriality of Hamiltonian reductions

Recently, Herbig--Schwarz--Seaton have shown that $3$-large representations of a reductive group $G$ give rise to a large class of symplectic singularities via Hamiltonian reduction. We show that these singularities are always terminal. We show that they are $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial if and only if $G$ has finite abelianization. When $G$ is connected and semi-simple, we show they are actually locally factorial. As a consequence, the symplectic singularities do not admit symplectic resolutions when $G$ is semi-simple. We end with some open questions.

Semi-simplicity of the category of admissible D-modules

Using a representation theoretic parameterization for the orbits in the enhanced cyclic nilpotent cone, derived by the authors in a previous article, we compute the fundamental group of these orbits. This computation has several applications to the representation theory of the category of admissible $D$-modules on the space of representations of the framed cyclic quiver. First, and foremost, we compute precisely when this category is semi-simple. We also show that the category of admissible $D$-modules has enough projectives. Finally, the support of an admissible $D$-module is contained in a certain Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of the space of representations. Thus, taking characteristic cycles defines a map from the $K$-group of the category of admissible $D$-modules to the $\mathbb{Z}$-span of the irreducible components of this Lagrangian. We show that this map is always injective, and a bijection if and only if the monodromicity parameter is integral.

Highest weight theory for finite-dimensional graded algebras with triangular decomposition

We show that the category of graded modules over a finite-dimensional graded algebra admitting a triangular decomposition can be endowed with the structure of a highest weight category. When the algebra is self-injective, we show furthermore that this highest weight category has tilting modules in the sense of Ringel. This provides a new perspective on the representation theory of such algebras, and leads to several new structures attached to them. There are a wide variety of examples in algebraic Lie theory to which this applies: restricted enveloping algebras, Lusztig's small quantum groups, hyperalgebras, finite quantum groups, and restricted rational Cherednik algebras.

Cores of graded algebras with triangular decomposition

We consider self-injective finite-dimensional graded algebras admitting a triangular decomposition. In a preceding paper, we have shown that the graded module category of such an algebra is a highest weight category and has tilting objects in the sense of Ringel. In this paper we focus on the degree zero part of the algebra, the core of the algebra. We show that the core captures essentially all relevant information about the graded representation theory. Using tilting theory, we show that the core is cellular. We then describe a canonical construction of a highest weight cover, in the sense of Rouquier, of this cellular algebra using a finite subquotient of the highest weight category. Thus, beginning with a self-injective graded algebra admitting a triangular decomposition, we canonically construct a quasi-hereditary algebra which encodes key information, such as graded multiplicities, of the original algebra. Our results are general and apply to a wide variety of examples, including restricted enveloping algebras, Lusztig's small quantum groups, hyperalgebras, finite quantum groups, and restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We expect that the cell modules and quasi-hereditary algebras introduced here will provide a new way of understanding these important examples.

The (cyclic) enhanced nilpotent cone via quiver representations

The $\mathrm{GL}(V)$-orbits in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\mathcal{N}(V)$ are (essentially) in bijection with the orbits of a certain parabolic $P\subseteq\mathrm{GL}(V)$ (the mirabolic subgroup) in the nilpotent cone $\mathcal{N}(V)$. We give a new parameterization of the orbits in the enhanced nilpotent cone, in terms of representations of the underlying quiver. This parameterization generalizes naturally to the enhanced cyclic nilpotent cone. Our parameterizations are different to the previous ones that have appeared in the literature. Explicit translations between the different parametrizations are given.

Filtrations on Springer fiber cohomology and Kostka polynomials

We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.

Hyperplane arrangements associated to symplectic quotient singularities

We study the hyperplane arrangements associated, via the minimal model programme, to symplectic quotient singularities. We show that this hyperplane arrangement equals the arrangement of CM-hyperplanes coming from the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We explain some of the interesting consequences of this identification for the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We also show that the Calogero-Moser space is smooth if and only if the Calogero-Moser families are trivial. We describe the arrangements of CM-hyperplanes associated to several exceptional complex reflection groups, some of which are free.

Cuspidal Calogero-Moser and Lusztig families for Coxeter groups

The goal of this paper is to compute the cuspidal Calogero-Moser families for all infinite families of finite Coxeter groups, at all parameters. We do this by first computing the symplectic leaves of the associated Calogero-Moser space and then by classifying certain "rigid" modules. Numerical evidence suggests that there is a very close relationship between Calogero-Moser families and Lusztig families. Our classification shows that, additionally, the cuspidal Calogero-Moser families equal cuspidal Lusztig families for the infinite families of Coxeter groups.

$SL_2$-action on Hilbert schemes and Calogero-Moser spaces

We study the natural $GL_2$-action on the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, resp. $SL_2$-action on the Calogero-Moser space. We describe the closure of the $GL_2$-orbit, resp. $SL_2$-orbit, of each point fixed by the corresponding diagonal torus. We also find the character of the representation of the group $GL_2$ in the fiber of the Procesi bundle, and its Calogero-Moser analogue, over the $SL_2$-fixed point.

Counting resolutions of symplectic quotient singularities

Let $Γ$ be a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{Sp}(V)$. In this article we count the number of symplectic resolutions admitted by the quotient singularity $V / Γ$. Our approach is to compare the universal Poisson deformation of the symplectic quotient singularity with the deformation given by the Calogero-Moser space. In this way, we give a simple formula for the number of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminalizations admitted by the symplectic quotient singularity in terms of the dimension of a certain Orlik-Solomon algebra naturally associated to the Calogero-Moser deformation. This dimension is explicitly calculated for all groups $Γ$ for which it is known that $V / Γ$ admits a symplectic resolution. As a consequence of our results, we confirm a conjecture of Ginzburg and Kaledin.

Symplectic reflection algebras

These lecture notes are based on an introductory course given by the author at the summer school "Noncommutative Algebraic Geometry" at MSRI in June 2012. The emphasis throughout is on examples to illustrate the many different facets of symplectic reflection algebras. Exercises are included at the end of each lecture in order for the student to get a better feel for these algebras.

Endomorphisms of Verma modules for rational Cherednik algebras

We study the endomorphism algebra of Verma modules for rational Cherednik algebras at t=0. It is shown that, in many cases, these endomorphism algebras are quotients of the centre of the rational Cherednik algebra. Geometrically, they define Lagrangian subvariaties of the generalized Calogero-Moser space. In the introduction, we motivate our results by describing them in the context of derived intersections of Lagrangians.

Rational Cherednik algebras and Schubert cells

The representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras of type A at t=0 gives rise, by considering supports, to a natural family of smooth Lagrangian subvarieties of the Calogero-Moser space. The goal of this article is to make precise the relationship between these Lagrangians and Schubert cells in the adelic Grassmannian. In order to do this we show that the isomorphism, as constructed by Etingof and Ginzburg, from the spectrum of the centre of the rational Cherednik algebra to the Calogero-Moser space is compatible with the factorization property of both of these spaces. As a consequence, the space of homomorphisms between certain representations of the rational Cherednik algebra can be identified with functions on the intersection Schubert cells.
