Topological Magnon-Phonon Hybrid Excitations in Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets with Tunable Chern Numbers

We theoretically investigate magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are analytically shown to be topologically nontrivial, possessing finite Chern numbers. We also show that the Chern numbers of magnon-polaron bands and the number of band-crossing lines can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. For experiments, we propose to use the thermal Hall conductivity as a probe of the finite Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons. Our results show that a simple ferromagnet on a square lattice supports topologically nontrivial magnon-polarons, generalizing topological excitations in conventional magnetic systems.

Unidirectional Magnon-Driven Domain Wall Motion Due to the Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

We demonstrate a unidirectional motion of a quasiparticle without an explicit symmetry breaking along the space-time coordinate of the particle motion. This counterintuitive behavior originates from a combined action of two intrinsic asymmetries in the other two directions. We realize this idea with the magnon-driven motion of a magnetic domain wall in thin films with interfacial asymmetry. Contrary to previous studies, the domain wall moves along the same direction regardless of the magnon-flow direction. Our general symmetry analysis and numerical simulation reveal that the odd order contributions from the interfacial asymmetry is unidirectional, which is dominant over bidirectional contributions in the realistic regime. We develop a simple analytic theory on the unidirectional motion, which provides an insightful description of this counterintuitive phenomenon.

Long spin coherence length and bulk-like spin-orbit torque in ferrimagnetic multilayers

Ferromagnetic spintronics has been a main focus as it offers non-volatile memory and logic applications through current-induced spin-transfer torques. Enabling wider applications of such magnetic devices requires a lower switching current for a smaller cell while keeping the thermal stability of magnetic cells for non-volatility. As the cell size reduces, however, it becomes extremely difficult to meet this requirement with ferromagnets because spin-transfer torque for ferromagnets is a surface torque due to rapid spin dephasing, leading to the 1/ferromagnet-thickness dependence of the spin-torque efficiency. Requirement of a larger switching current for a thicker and thus more thermally stable ferromagnetic cell is the fundamental obstacle for high-density non-volatile applications with ferromagnets. Theories predicted that antiferromagnets have a long spin coherence length due to the staggered spin order on an atomic scale, thereby resolving the above fundamental limitation. Despite several spin-torque experiments on antiferromagnets and ferrimagnetic alloys, this prediction has remained unexplored. Here we report a long spin coherence length and associated bulk-like-torque characteristic in an antiferromagnetically coupled ferrimagnetic multilayer. We find that a transverse spin current can pass through > 10 nm-thick ferrimagnetic Co/Tb multilayers whereas it is entirely absorbed by 1 nm-thick ferromagnetic Co/Ni multilayer. We also find that the switching efficiency of Co/Tb multilayers partially reflects a bulk-like-torque characteristic as it increases with the ferrimagnet-thickness up to 8 nm and then decreases, in clear contrast to 1/thickness-dependence of Co/Ni multilayers. Our results on antiferromagnetically coupled systems will invigorate researches towards energy-efficient spintronic technologies.

Spin-orbit torques induced by interface-generated spin currents

Magnetic torques generated through spin-orbit coupling promise energy-efficient spintronic devices. It is important for applications to control these torques so that they switch films with perpendicular magnetizations without an external magnetic field. One suggested approach uses magnetic trilayers in which the torque on the top magnetic layer can be manipulated by changing the magnetization of the bottom layer. Spin currents generated in the bottom magnetic layer or its interfaces transit the spacer layer and exert a torque on the top magnetization. Here we demonstrate field-free switching in such structures and attribute it to a novel spin current generated at the interface between the bottom layer and the spacer layer. The measured torque has a distinct dependence on the bottom layer magnetization which is consistent with this interface-generated spin current but not the anticipated bulk effects. This other interface-generated spin-orbit torque will enable energy-efficient control of spintronic devices.

Interfacial Rashba magnetoresistance of two-dimensional electron gas at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface

We report the angular dependence of magnetoresistance in two-dimensional electron gas at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We find that this interfacial magnetoresistance exhibits a similar angular dependence to the spin Hall magnetoresistance observed in ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers, which has been so far discussed in the framework of bulk spin Hall effect of heavy metal layer. The observed magnetoresistance is in qualitative agreement with theoretical model calculation including both Rashba spin-orbit coupling and exchange interaction. Our result suggests that magnetic interfaces subject to spin-orbit coupling can generate a nonnegligible contribution to the spin Hall magnetoresistance and the interfacial spin-orbit coupling effect is therefore key to the understanding of various spin-orbit-coupling-related phenomena in magnetic/non-magnetic bilayers.

Coherent Terahertz Spin-Wave Emission Associated with Ferrimagnetic Domain Wall Dynamics

We theoretically study the dynamics of ferrimagnetic domain walls in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that an application of a DC magnetic field can induce terahertz spin-wave emission by driving ferrimagnetic domain walls, which is not possible for ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic domain walls. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is shown to facilitate the teraherz spin-wave emission in wide ranges of net angular momentum by increasing the Walkerbreakdown field. Moreover, we show that spin-orbit torque combined with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction also drives a fast ferrimagnetic domain wall motion with emitting terahertz spin-waves in wide ranges of net angular momentum.

Microscopic Origin of Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Chiral spin textures at the interface between ferromagnetic and heavy nonmagnetic metals, such as Neel-type domain walls and skyrmions, have been studied intensively because of their great potential for future nanomagnetic devices. The Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is an essential phenomenon for the formation of such chiral spin textures. In spite of recent theoretical progress aiming at understanding the microscopic origin of the DMI, an experimental investigation unravelling the physics at stake is still required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the close correlation of the DMI with the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment and with the magnetic dipole moment of the ferromagnetic metal. The density functional theory and the tight-binding model calculations reveal that asymmetric electron occupation in orbitals gives rise to this correlation.

Antiferromagnetic domain wall motion driven by spin-orbit torques

We theoretically investigate dynamics of antiferromagnetic domain walls driven by spin-orbit torques in antiferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. We show that spin-orbit torques drive antiferromagnetic domain walls much faster than ferromagnetic domain walls. As the domain wall velocity approaches the maximum spin-wave group velocity, the domain wall undergoes Lorentz contraction and emits spin-waves in the terahertz frequency range. The interplay between spin orbit torques and the relativistic dynamics of antiferromagnetic domain walls leads to the efficient manipulation of antiferromagnetic spin textures and paves the way for the generation of high frequency signals in antiferromagnets.

Arbitrary Chern number generation in the three-band model from momentum space

A simple, general rule for generating a three-band model with arbitrary Chern numbers is given. The rule is based on the idea of monopole charge-changing unitary operations and can be realized by two types of simple unitary operations on the original Hamiltonian. A pair of monopole charges are required to produce desired topological numbers in the three-band model. The set of rules presented here offers a way to produce lattice models of any desired Chern numbers for three-sublattice situations.

Soliton Defects in One-dimensional Topological Three-band Hamiltonian

Defect formation in the one-dimensional topological three-band model is examined within both lattice and continuum models. Classic results of Jackiw-Rebbi and Rice-Mele for the soliton charge is generalized to the three-band model. The presence of the central flat band in the three-band model makes the soliton charge as a function of energy behave in a qualitatively different way from the two-band Dirac model case. Quantum field-theoretical calculation of Goldstone and Wilczek is also generalized to the three-band model to obtain the soliton charge. Diamond-chain lattice is shown to be an ideal structure to host a topological three-band structure.

Three-Band Model for Quantum Hall and Spin Hall Effects

Topological properties of a certain class of spinless three-band Hamiltonians are shown to be summed up by the Skyrmion number in momentum space, analogous to the case of two-band Hamiltonian. Topological tight-binding Hamiltonian on a Kagome lattice is analyzed with this view. When such a Hamiltonian is "folded", the two bands with opposite Chern numbers merge into a degenerate band exhibiting non-Abelian gauge connection. Conserved pseudo-spin current operator can be constructed in this case and used to compute the pseudo-spin Hall conductance. Our model Hamiltonians belong to the symmetry class D and AI according to the ten-fold classification scheme.

BPS Vortices, $Q$-balls, and $Q$-vortices in ${\cal N}=6$} Chern-Simons Matter Theory

We investigate the vortex-type BPS equations in the ABJM theory without and with mass-deformation. We systematically classify the BPS equations in terms of the number of supersymmetry and the R-symmetries of the undeformed and mass-deformed ABJM theories. For the undeformed case, we analyze the ${\cal N}=2$ BPS equations for U(2)$\times$U(2) gauge symmetry and obtain a coupled differential equation which can be reduced to either Liouville- or Sinh-Gordon-type vortex equations according to the choice of scalar functions. For the mass-deformed case with U($N$)$\times$U($N$) gauge symmetry, we obtain some number of pairs of coupled differential equations from the ${\cal N}=1,2$ BPS equations, which can be reduced to the vortex equations in Maxwell-Higgs theory or Chern-Simons matter theories as special cases. We discuss the solutions. In ${\cal N}=3$ vortex equations Chern-Simons-type vortex equation is not allowed. We also show that ${\cal N}=\frac52, \frac32, \frac12$ BPS equations are equivalent to those with higher integer supersymmetries.

${\cal N}=3$ Supersymmetric Effective Action of D2-branes in Massive IIA String Theory

We obtain a new-type of ${\cal N}=3$ Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory from the Mukhi-Papageorgakis Higgsing of the ${\cal N}=3$ Gaiotto-Tomasiello theory. This theory has ${\cal N}=1$ BPS fuzzy funnel solution which is expressed in terms of the seven generators of SU(3), excluding $T_8$. We propose that this is an effective theory of multiple D2-branes with D6- and D8-branes background in massive IIA string theory.

BPS Limit of Multi- D- and DF-strings in Boundary String Field Theory

A BPS limit is systematically derived for straight multi- D- and DF-strings from the D3D3bar system in the context of boundary superstring field theory. The BPS limit is obtained in the limit of thin D(F)-strings, where the Bogomolnyi equation supports singular static multi-D(F)-string solutions. For the BPS multi-string configurations with arbitrary separations, BPS sum rule is fulfilled under a Gaussian type tachyon potential and reproduces exactly the descent relation. For the DF-strings ((p,q)-strings), the distribution of fundamental string charge density coincides with its energy density and the Hamiltonian density takes the BPS formula of square-root form.
