The polynomially convex embedding dimension of real manifolds of dimension $\leq 11$

We show that any compact smooth real $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ with $n\leq 11$ can be smoothly embedded into $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ as a polynomially convex set. In general, there is no such embedding into $\mathbb{C}^n$. This solves a problem by Izzo and Stout for $n\leq 11$. Additionally, we show that the image $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ is stratified totally real. As a consequence, by a result in [13], each continuous complex-valued functions on $\widetilde{M}$ is the uniform limit on $\widetilde{M}$ of holomorphic polynomials in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. Our proof is based on the jet transversality theorem and a slight improvement of a perturbation result by the first and the third author.

Polynomial convexity of $\bar\partial$-flat perturbations of totally real sets

We show that if $X$ is a totally real $d$-dimensional manifold attached to a polynomially convex compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $d<n$, then there are arbitrarily small perturbations $X'$ of $X$ such that $K\cup X'$ is polynomially convex. The perturbations are induced by diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^n$ fixing $K$, which are $\bar\partial$-flat on $K\cup X$, and which are arbitrarily $C^k$-close to the identity.

On manifold-like polyfolds as differential geometrical objects with applications in complex geometry

We argue for more widespread use of manifold-like polyfolds (M-polyfolds) as differential geometric objects. M-polyfolds possess a distinct advantage over differentiable manifolds, enabling a smooth and local change of dimension. To establish their utility, we introduce tensors and prove the existence of Riemannian metrics, symplectic structures, and almost complex structures within the M-polyfold framework. Drawing inspiration from a series of highly acclaimed articles by László Lempert, we lay the foundation for advancing geometry and function theory in complex M-polyfolds.

A pullback operation on a class of currents

For any holomorphic mapping $f\colon X\to Y$ between a complex manifold $X$ and a complex Hermitian manifold $Y$ we extend the pullback $f^*$ from smooth forms to a class of currents. We provide a basic calculus for this pullback and show under quite mild assumptions that it is cohomologically sound. The class of currents we consider contains in particular the Lelong current of any analytic cycle. Our pullback depends in general on the Hermitian structure of $Y$ but coincides with the usual pullback of currents in case $f$ is a submersion. The construction is based on the Gysin mapping in algebraic geometry.

On proper intersections on a singular analytic space

Given a reduced analytic space $Y$ we introduce a class of {\it nice} cycles, including all effective $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisors. Equidimensional nice cycles that intersect properly allow for a natural intersection product. Using $\bar{\partial}$-potentials and residue calculus we provide an intrinsic way of defining this product. The intrinsic definition makes it possible to prove global formulas. In case $Y$ is smooth all cycles are differences of nice cycles, and so we get a new way to define classical proper intersections.

On non-proper intersections and local intersection numbers

Given pure-dimensional (generalized) cycles $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ on a complex manifold $Y$ we introduce a product $μ_1\diamond_{Y} μ_2$ that is a generalized cycle whose multiplicities at each point are the local intersection numbers at the point. % If $Y$ is projective, then given a very ample line bundle $L\to Y$ we define a product $μ_1\bl μ_2$ whose multiplicities at each point also coincide with the local intersection numbers. In addition, provided that $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ are effective, this product satisfies a Bézout inequality. If $i\colon Y\to \Pk^N$ is an embedding such that $i^*\Ok(1)=L$, then $μ_1\bl μ_2$ can be expressed as a mean value of Stückrad-Vogel cycles on $\Pk^N$. There are quite explicit relations between $\di_Y$ and $\bl$.

A smoothness criterion for complex spaces in terms of differential forms

For a reduced pure dimensional complex space $X$, we show that if Barlet's recently introduced sheaf $α_X^1$ of holomorphic $1$-forms or the sheaf of germs of weakly holomorphic $1$-forms is locally free, then $X$ is smooth. Moreover, we discuss the connection to Barlet's well-known sheaf $ω_X^1$.

Global representation of Segre numbers by Monge-Ampère products

On a reduced analytic space $X$ we introduce the concept of a generalized cycle, which extends the notion of a formal sum of analytic subspaces to include also a form part. We then consider a suitable equivalence relation and corresponding quotient $\mathcal{B}(X)$ that we think of as an analogue of the Chow group and a refinement of de Rham cohomology. This group allows us to study both global and local intersection theoretic properties. We provide many $\mathcal{B}$-analogues of classical intersection theoretic constructions: For an analytic subspace $V\subset X$ we define a $\mathcal{B}$-Segre class, which is an element of $\mathcal{B}(X)$ with support in $V$. It satisfies a global King formula and, in particular, its multiplicities at each point coincide with the Segre numbers of $V$. When $V$ is cut out by a section of a vector bundle we interpret this class as a Monge-Ampère-type product. For regular embeddings we construct a $\mathcal{B}$-analogue of the Gysin morphism.

The $\bar\partial$-equation for $(p,q)$-forms on a non-reduced analytic space

On any pure $n$-dimensional, possibly non-reduced, analytic space $X$ we introduce the sheaves $\mathscr{E}_X^{p,q}$ of smooth $(p,q)$-forms and certain extensions $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ of them such that the corresponding Dolbeault complex is exact, i.e., the $\bar\partial$-equation is locally solvable in $\mathscr{A}_X$. The sheaves $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ are modules over the smooth forms, in particular, they are fine sheaves. We also introduce certain sheaves $\mathscr{B}_X^{n-p,n-q}$ of currents on $X$ that are dual to $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ in the sense of Serre duality. More precisely, we show that the compactly supported Dolbeault cohomology of $\mathscr{B}^{n-p,n-q}(X)$ in a natural way is the dual of the Dolbeault cohomology of $\mathscr{A}^{p,q}(X)$.

Nonproper intersection products and generalized cycles

In this article we develop intersection theory in terms of the $\mathcal{B}$-group of a reduced analytic space. This group was introduced in a previous work as an analogue of the Chow group; it is generated by currents that are direct images of Chern forms and it contains all usual cycles. However, contrary to Chow classes, the $\mathcal{B}$-classes have well-defined multiplicities at each point. We focus on a $\mathcal{B}$-analogue of the intersection theory based on the Stückrad-Vogel procedure and the join construction in projective space. Our approach provides global $\mathcal{B}$-classes which satisfy a Bézout theorem and have the expected local intersection numbers. An essential feature is that we take averages, over various auxiliary choices, by integration. We also introduce $\mathcal{B}$-analogues of more classical constructions of intersections using the Gysin map of the diagonal. These constructions are connected via a $\mathcal{B}$-variant of van Gastel's formulas. Furthermore, we prove that our intersections coincide with the classical ones on cohomology level.

Estimates for the $\bar{\partial}$-equation on canonical surfaces

We study the solvability in $L^p$ of the $\bar\partial$-equation in a neighborhood of a canonical singularity on a complex surface, a so-called du Val singularity. We get a quite complete picture in case $p=2$ for two natural closed extensions $\bar\partial_s$ and $\bar\partial_w$ of $\bar\partial$. For $\bar\partial_s$ we have solvability, whereas for $\bar\partial_w$ there is solvability if and only if a certain boundary condition $(*)$ is fulfilled at the singularity. Our main tool is certain integral operators for solving $\bar\partial$ introduced by the first and fourth author, and we study mapping properties of these operators at the singularity.

Integral representation of moderate cohomology

We make the classical Dickenstein-Sessa canonical representation in local moderate cohomology explicit by an integral formula. We also provide a similar representation of the higher local moderate cohomology groups. The results are related to holomorphic forms on non-reduced complex spaces.

The $\bar{\partial}$-equation, duality, and holomorphic forms on a reduced complex space

We solve the $\bar{\partial}$-equation for $(p,q)$-forms locally on any reduced pure-dimensional complex space and we prove an explicit version of Serre duality by introducing suitable concrete fine sheaves of certain $(p,q)$-currents. In particular this gives a precise condition for the $\bar{\partial}$-equation to be globally solvable. Our results extend results for $(0,q)$-forms and give information about holomorphic $p$-forms on singular spaces.

Explicit Serre duality on complex spaces

In this paper we use recently developed calculus of residue currents together with integral formulas to give a new explicit analytic realization, as well as a new analytic proof of Serre duality on any reduced pure $n$-dimensional paracompact complex space $X$. At the core of the paper is the introduction of concrete fine sheaves $\mathscr{B}_X^{n,q}$ of certain currents on $X$ of bidegree $(n,q)$, such that the Dolbeault complex $(\mathscr{B}_X^{n,\bullet},\,\bar{\partial})$ becomes, in a certain sense, a dualizing complex. In particular, if $X$ is Cohen-Macaulay (e.g., Gorenstein or a complete intersection) then $(\mathscr{B}_X^{n,\bullet},\,\bar{\partial})$ is an explicit fine resolution of the Grothendieck dualizing sheaf.

A Ronkin type function for coamoebas

The Ronkin function plays a fundamental role in the theory of amoebas. We introduce an analogue of the Ronkin function in the setting of coamoebas. It turns out to be closely related to a certain toric arrangement known as the shell of the coamoeba and we use our Ronkin type function to obtain some properties of it.

Segre numbers, a generalized King formula, and local intersections

Let $\mathcal J$ be an ideal sheaf on a reduced analytic space $X$ with zero set $Z$. We show that the Lelong numbers of the restrictions to $Z$ of certain generalized Monge-Ampère products $(dd^c\log|f|^2)^k$, where $f$ is a tuple of generators of $\mathcal J$, coincide with the so-called Segre numbers of $\mathcal J$, introduced independently by Tworzewski and Gaffney-Gassler. More generally we show that these currents satisfy a generalization of the classical King formula that takes into account fixed and moving components of Vogel cycles associated with $\mathcal J$. A basic tool is a new calculus for products of positive currents of Bochner-Martinelli type. We also discuss connections to intersection theory.

Presence or absence of analytic structure in maximal ideal spaces

We study extensions of Wermer's maximality theorem to several complex variables. We exhibit various smoothly embedded manifolds in complex Euclidean space whose hulls are non-trivial but contain no analytic disks. We answer a question posed by Lee Stout concerning the existence of analytic structure for a uniform algebra whose maximal ideal space is a manifold.
