Topology and dynamics of a flow that has a non-saddle set or a $W$-set

The aim of this paper is to study dynamical and topological properties of a flow in the region of influence of an isolated non-saddle set or a $W$-set in a manifold. These are certain classes of compact invariant sets in whose vicinity the asymptotic behaviour of the flow is somewhat controlled. We are mainly concerned with global properties of the dynamics and establish cohomological relations between the non-saddle set and the manifold. As a consequence we obtain a dynamical classification of surfaces (orientable and non-orientable). We also examine robustness and bifurcation properties of non-saddle-sets and study in detail the behavior of $W$-sets in 2-manifolds.

A Conley index study of the evolution of the Lorenz strange set

In this paper we study the Lorenz equations using the perspective of the Conley index theory. More specifically, we examine the evolution of the strange set that these equations posses throughout the different values of the parameter. We also analyze some natural Morse decompositions of the global attractor of the system and the role of the strange set in these decompositions. We calculate the corresponding Morse equations and study their change along the successive bifurcations. In addition, we formulate and prove some theorems which are applicable in more general situations. These theorems refer to Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf bifurcations of arbitrary codimension, bifurcations with two homoclinic loops and a study of the role of the travelling repellers in the transformation of repeller-attractor pairs into attractor-repeller ones.

Shape index, Brouwer degree and Poincaré-Hopf theorem

In this paper we study the relationship of the Brouwer degree of a vector field with the dynamics of the induced flow. Analogous relations are studied for the index of a vector field. We obtain new forms of the Poincar% é-Hopf theorem and of the Borsuk and Hirsch antipodal theorems. As an application, we calculate the Brouwer degree of the vector field of the Lorenz equations in isolating blocks of the Lorenz strange set.

On the growth rate inequality for self-maps of the sphere

Let $S^m = \{x_0^2 + x_1^2 + \cdots + x_m^2 = 1\}$ and $P = \{x_0 = x_1 = 0\} \cap S^m$. Suppose that $f$ is a self--map of $S^m$ such that $f^{-1}(P) = P$ and $|\mathrm{deg}(f_{|P})| < |\mathrm{deg}(f)|$. Then, the number of fixed points of $f^n$ grows at least exponentially with base $|d| > 1$, where $d = \mathrm{deg}(f)/\mathrm{deg}(f_{|P}) \in \mathbb Z$.

Knotted toroidal sets, attractors and incompressible surfaces

In this paper we give a complete characterization of those knotted toroidal sets that can be realized as attractors for both discrete and continuous dynamical systems globally defined in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also see that the techniques used to solve this problem can be used to give sufficient conditions to ensure that a wide class of subcompacta of $\mathbb{R}^3$ that are attractors for homeomorphisms must also be attractors for flows. In addition we study certain attractor-repeller decompositions of $\mathbb{S}^3$ which arise naturally when considering toroidal sets.

Higher dimensional topology and generalized Hopf bifurcations for discrete dynamical systems

In this paper we study generalized Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf bifurcations of discrete dynamical systems. We prove a general result for attractors in n-dimensional manifolds satisfying some suitable conditions. This result allows us to obtain sharper Hopf bifurcation theorems for fixed points in the general case and other attractors in low dimensional manifolds. Topological techniques based on the notion of concentricity of manifolds play a substantial role in the paper.

Cech cohomology, homoclinic trajectories and robustness of non-saddle sets

In this paper we study flows $φ:M\times\mathbb{R}\longrightarrow M$ having an isolated non-saddle set. We see that the complexity of the region of influence of an isolated non-saddle set $K$ depends on the way in which $K$ sits on the phase space at the cohomological level. We construct flows in surfaces having isolated non-saddle sets with a prescribed structure for its region of influence. We also study parametrized families of smooth flows and continuations of non-saddle sets.

Knots and solenoids that cannot be attractors of self-homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^3$

As a first step to understand how complicated attractors for dynamical systems can be, one may consider the following realizability problem: given a continuum $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$, decide when $K$ can be realized as an attractor for a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper we introduce toroidal sets as those continua $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ that have a neighbourhood basis comprised of solid tori and, generalizing the classical notion of genus of a knot, give a natural definition of the genus of toroidal sets and study some of its properties. Using these tools we exhibit knots and solenoids for which the answer to the realizability problem stated above is negative.

Dissonant points and the region of influence of non-saddle sets

The aim of this paper is to study dynamical and topological properties of a flow in the region of influence of an isolated non-saddle set. We see, in particular, that some topological conditions are sufficient to guarantee that these sets are attractors or repellers. We study in detail the existence of dissonant points of the flow, which play a key role in the description of the region of influence of a non-saddle set. These points are responsible for much of the dynamical and topological complexity of the system. We also study non-saddle sets from the point of view of the Conley index theory and consider, among other things, the case of flows on manifolds with trivial first cohomology group. For flows on these manifolds, dynamical robustness is equivalent to topological robustness. We carry out a particular study of 2-dimensional flows and give a topological condition which detects the existence of dissonant points for flows on surfaces. We also prove that isolated invariant continua of planar flows with global region of influence are necessarily attractors or repellers.

Fixed points, bounded orbits and attractors of planar flows

In this paper we provide a dynamical characterization of isolated invariant continua which are global attractors for planar dissipative flows. As a consequence, a sufficient condition for an isolated invariant continuum to be either an attractor or a repeller is derived for general planar flows.

Bifurcations, robustness and shape theory of attractors of discrete dynamical systems

We study in this paper global properties, mainly of topological nature, of attractors of discrete dynamical systems. We consider the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation for homeomorphisms of the plane and establish some robustness properties for attractors of such homeomorphisms. We also give relations between attractors of flows and quasi-attractors of homeomorphisms in Rn. Finally, we give a result on the shape (in the sense of Borsuk) of invariant sets of IFSs on the plane, and make some remarks about the recent theory of Conley attractors for IFS.

Regular blocks and Conley index of isolated invariant continua in surfaces

In this paper we study topological and dynamical features of isolated invariant continua of continuous flows defined on surfaces. We show that near an isolated invariant continuum the flow is topologically equivalent to a C1 flow. We deduce that isolated invariant continua in surfaces have the shape of finite polyhedra. We also show the existence of regular isolating blocks of isolated invariant continua and we use them to compute their Conley index provided that we have some knowledge about the truncated unstable manifold. We also see that the ring structure of the cohomology index of an isolated invariant continuum in a surface determines its Conley index. In addition, we study the dynamics of non-saddle sets, preservation of topological and dynamical properties by continuation and we give a topological classification of isolated invariant continua which do not contain fixed points and, as a consequence, we also classify isolated minimal sets.

Dissipative flows, global attractors and shape theory

In this paper we study continuous parametrized families of dissipative flows, which are those flows having a global attractor. The main motivation for this study comes from the observation that, in general, global attractors are not robust, in the sense that small perturbations of the flow can destroy their globality. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a global attractor to be continued to a global attractor. We also study, using shape theoretical methods and the Conley index, the bifurcation global to non-global.
