Multi-Label 12-Lead ECG Classification on the PTB-XL Dataset: A Comparative Evaluation of Deep Learning Architectures and Heterogeneous Ensemble Approaches

This study aimed to compare the performance of different deep learning architectures and heterogeneous ensemble learning approaches for multi-label 12-lead ECG classification on the PTB-XL dataset. Five different models, namely 1D-ResNet18, Bidirectional Mamba, xLSTM, CWT-ViT-KAN, and the pre-trained ECGFounder, were evaluated. Utilizing the recommended split structure of the PTB-XL dataset, folds 1-8 were allocated as the training set, fold 9 as the validation set, and fold 10 as the independent test set. In addition to the individual models, three different ensemble approaches were investigated: Equal-Weight Soft Voting, Validation-Weighted Soft Voting, and stacking. Among the individual models, the highest performance was achieved by ECGFounder, with a Macro AUROC of 0.930 and a Macro AUPRC of 0.823. For the ensemble models, the highest values in the primary macro performance metrics were obtained by the stacking approach, achieving a Macro AUROC of 0.936, a Macro AUPRC of 0.836, and a Macro F1 of 0.763. The highest subset accuracy of 0.630 was achieved using the Validation-Weighted Soft Voting method. The findings indicate that heterogeneous ensemble models, which combine different representation learning approaches, can provide additional performance improvements over individual models in multi-label ECG classification.

Real-Time Control and Automation Framework for Acousto-Holographic Microscopy

Manual operation of microscopes for repetitive tasks in cell biology is a significant bottleneck, consuming invaluable expert time, and introducing human error. Automation is essential, and while Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) offers powerful, label-free quantitative phase imaging (QPI), its inherently noisy and low-contrast holograms make robust autofocus and object detection challenging. We present the design, integration, and validation of a fully automated closed-loop DHM system engineered for high-throughput mechanical characterization of biological cells. The system integrates automated serpentine scanning, real-time YOLO-based object detection, and a high-performance, multi-threaded software architecture using pinned memory and SPSC queues. This design enables the GPU-accelerated reconstruction pipeline to run fully in parallel with the 50 fps data acquisition, adding no sequential overhead. A key contribution is the validation of a robust, multi-stage holographic autofocus strategy; we demonstrate that a selected metric (based on a low-pass filter and standard deviation) provides reliable focusing for noisy holograms where conventional methods (e.g., Tenengrad, Laplacian) fail entirely. Performance analysis of the complete system identifies the 2.23-second autofocus operation-not reconstruction-as the primary throughput bottleneck, resulting in a 9.62-second analysis time per object. This work delivers a complete functional platform for autonomous DHM screening and provides a clear, data-driven path for future optimization, proposing a hybrid brightfield imaging modality to address current bottlenecks.

Magnetically Levitated Microrobotic Mixer

Microfluidic systems, when combined with microrobots, offer enhanced precision in chemical synthesis by precisely controlling reaction conditions. These systems, when integrated with analytical tools, allow for real-time monitoring and are cost-efficient due to their minimal volume requirements, thereby reducing risks associated with hazardous chemicals. In our study, we have investigated the mixing efficiency of Thymolphthalein indicator with NaOH solution in a magnetically levitated microrobotic mixer. A PMMA microfluidic chip was used to transfer fluid containing two different solutions and achieve fast and efficient mixing. By adjusting five different flow rates and altering the rotational speeds of the microrobots, the mixing efficiency was observed. The studies were carried out under the laminar regime, with incompressible Newtonian flow rates and varying actuator speeds. The measurement of mixing efficiency was accomplished through the calculation of changes in pixel intensity observed in microscopic images acquired throughout the mixing process. The presence of the microrobots resulted in the best efficiency at 80.37% at 500 rpm and 7 mL/min flow rate. Their potential in advanced reactions, such as nanoparticle synthesis and encapsulation, suggests promising avenues for improving product yields.

Comparative Analysis of Deep Learning Architectures for Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using the BreaKHis Dataset

Cancer is an extremely difficult and dangerous health problem because it manifests in so many different ways and affects so many different organs and tissues. The primary goal of this research was to evaluate deep learning models' ability to correctly identify breast cancer cases using the BreakHis dataset. The BreakHis dataset covers a wide range of breast cancer subtypes through its huge collection of histopathological pictures. In this study, we use and compare the performance of five well-known deep learning models for cancer classification: VGG, ResNet, Xception, Inception, and InceptionResNet. The results placed the Xception model at the top, with an F1 score of 0.9 and an accuracy of 89%. At the same time, the Inception and InceptionResNet models both hit accuracy of 87% . However, the F1 score for the Inception model was 87, while that for the InceptionResNet model was 86. These results demonstrate the importance of deep learning methods in making correct breast cancer diagnoses. This highlights the potential to provide improved diagnostic services to patients. The findings of this study not only improve current methods of cancer diagnosis, but also make significant contributions to the creation of new and improved cancer treatment strategies. In a nutshell, the results of this study represent a major advancement in the direction of achieving these vital healthcare goals.
