Interference Mitigation and Spectral Efficiency Enhancement in a Multi-BD Symbiotic Radio

This study presents a framework designed to mitigate direct-link interference (DLI) and inter-backscatter device interference (IBDI) in multi-backscatter orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based symbiotic radio (SR) systems. The framework employs OFDM signal designs with strategic allocation of null subcarriers and incorporates two backscatter modulation techniques: on-off frequency shift keying (OFSK) and multiple frequency shift keying (MFSK) for symbiotic backscatter communication (SBC). Additionally, we propose Fully-Orthogonal and Semi-Orthogonal multiple access schemes to facilitate SBC alongside primary communication. The Fully-Orthogonal scheme maintains orthogonality between direct link and SBC signals, thereby ensuring interference-free SBC, albeit at a reduced spectral efficiency. In contrast, the Semi-Orthogonal schemes eliminate IBDI but permit partial DLI, striking a balance between reliability and spectral efficiency. To address the partial DLI inherent in Semi-Orthogonal schemes, successive interference cancellation (SIC) is employed at the receiver, enhancing SBC reliability. To tackle channel estimation challenges in SBC within the SR system, we implement non-coherent detection techniques at the receiver. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated based on average bit error rate (BER) and sum-rate metrics, demonstrating the effectiveness of our schemes. We provide analytical results for the system's detection performance under both proposed modulation techniques and multiple access schemes, which are subsequently validated through extensive simulations. These simulations indicate a notable error-rate reduction of up to $10^{-3}$ at $20$ dB with the Fully-Orthogonal scheme with MFSK.

Optimal Joint Radar and Communication User Association in Cell-Free mMIMO Systems

The cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) systems are crucial for 6G development due to their high spectral efficiency and uniform user-experienced data rates. A key aspect of CF-mMIMO is user association (UA) and optimal cluster formation. Traditional methods focusing solely on communication-related metrics fall short in this context, as sensing is becoming integral to 6G. This study delves into a framework for joint radar and communication (JRC) in CF-mMIMO systems and investigates JRC-based UA techniques. We propose a novel method to optimize UA, enhancing both communication spectral efficiency and sensing accuracy. Existing literature has not explored this dual requirement integration for UA. Our proposed two-step scheme optimizes UA clusters for both communication and sensing. The first step involves selecting access points (APs) based on channel quality, followed by a second step that further refines the selection by choosing APs from the initial group that are also optimal for sensing. We utilize the signal-clutter plus noise ratio to exclude APs with clutter in front of the user equipment (UE) and the AP view angle, ensuring that radar echoes are received only from the specific UE, not the surrounding clutter. Theoretical analysis and simulations demonstrate that the same APs optimized for communication are not necessarily optimal for sensing, highlighting the need for schemes that incorporate sensing requirements in UA. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing its potential to improve CF-mMIMO system performance in JRC scenarios.

Interference-Free Backscatter Communications for OFDM-Based Symbiotic Radio

This study proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based scheme to achieve interference-free backscatter communications (BC) in a symbiotic radio system. In specific, we propose three frequency shift keying (FSK) based backscatter modulation schemes to shift the primary signal, i.e., the OFDM symbols transmitted from a base station (BS), in the frequency domain to transmit its information. Symbiotically, the BS empties specific subcarriers within the band so that the received frequency-shifted signals from the backscatter device and the primary signal are always orthogonal. The first scheme relies on the combination of on-off keying (OOK) within the FSK modulation while the second and the third schemes are based on the conventional FSK modulation with different in-band null-subcarrier allocation. These schemes allow the use of non-coherent detection at the receiver which addresses the channel estimation challenge for the signals arriving from a backscatter device. We derive the bit-error rate performance of the detector theoretically. The comprehensive simulations show that the proposed approach achieves a lower bit-error rate up to 10-4 at 30 dB with BC by eliminating direct link interference.

An Efficient Low-Complexity RSMA Scheme for Multi-User Decode-and-Forward Relay Systems

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is a promising strategy for ensuring robust transmission in multi-antenna wireless systems. In this paper, we investigate the performance of RSMA in a downlink Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay scenario under two phases with imperfect Channel State Information (CSI) at the transmitter and the relay. In particular, in the first phase, the Base Station (BS) initially transmits to both BS Users (BUs) and the relay. In the second phase, the relay decodes and forwards the received signals to Relay Users (RUs) outside the BS coverage area. Furthermore, we investigate a scenario where the relay broadcasts a common stream intended for the RUs in the second phase. Due to the broadcast nature of the transmission, this stream is inadvertently received by both the RUs and the BUs. Concurrently, the BS utilizes Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) to transmit private streams to the BUs, resulting in BUs experiencing residual interference from the common stream transmitted from relay. Incorporating this residual common stream interference into our model results in a significant enhancement of the overall sum-rate achieved at the BUs. We derive a tractable lower bound on the ergodic sum-rates, enables us to develop closed-form solutions for power allocation that maximize the overall sum-rate in both phases. Extensive simulations validate that our proposed power allocation algorithm, in conjunction with a low-complexity precoder, significantly improves the sum-rate performance of DF relay RSMA networks compared to the SDMA-based benchmark designs under imperfect CSI at the transmitter and relay.

A Self-Healing Mesh Network without Global-Time Synchronization

In this paper, we propose a slot-based protocol that does not rely on global-time synchronization to achieve a self-healing mesh network. With the proposed protocol, each node synchronizes with its neighbors locally by adjusting its time to transmit based on the reception instant of a decoded beacon signal. Also, it determines its slots without any coordinator to avoid collisions. Finally, to communicate the messages over the mesh network, it identifies the forwarding nodes on the shortest path without knowing the entire communication graph. We show that the proposed protocol can effectively resolve collisions over time while enabling nodes to synchronize with each other in a distributed manner. We numerically analyze the performance of the proposed protocol for different configurations under a realistic channel model considering asymmetrical links. We also implement the proposed method in practice with \ac{LoRa} devices. We demonstrate that the nodes adapt themselves to changes in the network and deliver a message from a sensing node to a reference node via multi-hop routing.

Novel Transceiver Design in Wideband Massive MIMO for Beam Squint Minimization

When using ultra-wideband (UWB) signaling on massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, the electromagnetic wave at each array element incurs an extra propagation delay comparable to (or larger than) the symbol duration, producing a shift in beam direction known as beam squint. The beam squinting problem degrades the array gain and reduces the system capacity. This letter proposes a novel transceiver design based on lens antenna subarray (LAS) and analog subband filters to compensate for the beam squinting effect. In particular, the proposed design aims to divide the UWB signal into narrowband beams and control them with a simplified exhaustive search-based precoding that is proposed to align the beam angle to the target direction. The design is analyzed in terms of beam gain, complexity, power consumption, and capacity, demonstrating significant performance enhancement with respect to the conventional system with uncompensated beam squinting problem.

Effect of Prefix/Suffix Configurations on OTFS Systems with Rectangular Waveforms

Recently, orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation is used as a promising candidate waveform for high mobility communication scenarios. In practical transmission, OTFS with rectangular pulse shaping is implemented using different prefix/suffix configurations including reduced-cyclic prefix (RCP), full-CP (FCP), full-zero suffix (FZS), and reduced-zero padded (RZP). However, for each prefix/suffix type, different effective channel are seen at the receiver side resulting in dissimilar performance of the various OTFS configurations given a specific communication scenario. To fulfill this gap, in this paper, we study and model the effective channel in OTFS systems using various prefix/suffix configurations. Then, from the input-output relation analysis of the received signal, we show that the OTFS has a simple sparse structure for all prefix/suffix types, where the only difference is the phase term introduced when extending quasi-periodically in the delay-Doppler grid. We provide a comprehensive comparison between all OTFS types in terms of channel estimation/equalization complexity, symbol detection performance, power and spectral efficiencies, which helps in deciding the optimal prefix/suffix configuration for a specific scenario. Finally, we propose a novel OTFS structure namely reduced-FCP (RFCP) where the information of the CP block is decodable.

Cyclic Prefix (CP) Jamming Against Eavesdropping Relays in OFDM Systems

Cooperative communication has been widely used to provide spatial diversity benefits for low-end user equipments, especially in ad hoc and wireless sensor networks. However, the lack of strong authentication mechanisms in these networks leaves them prone to eavesdropping relays. In this paper, we propose a secure orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme, where the destination node transmits a jamming signal over the cyclic prefix (CP) duration of the received signal. Simulation results verify that as long as at least a part of the jamming signal falls to the actual data portion of the eavesdropping relay, it spreads through all the data symbols due to the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) operation, resulting in degraded interception at the eavesdropper.

Arraymetrics: Authentication Through Chaotic Antenna Array Geometries

Advances in computing have resulted in an emerging need for multi-factor authentication using an amalgamation of cryptographic and physical keys. This letter presents a novel authentication approach using a combination of signal and antenna activation sequences, and most importantly, perturbed antenna array geometries. Possible degrees of freedom in perturbing antenna array geometries affected physical properties and their detection are presented. Channel estimation for the plurality of validly authorized arrays is discussed. Accuracy is investigated as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and number of authorized arrays. It is observed that the proposed authentication scheme can provide 1% false authentication rate at 10 dB SNR, while it is achieving less than 1% missed authentication rates.

Joint Tracking of Multiple Beams in Beamspace MIMO Systems

In millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, beamforming is needed to overcome harsh channel environments. As a promising beamforming solution, lens antenna array (LAA) implementation can provide a cost-effective solution without notable performance degradation compared to its counterpart. However, an appropriate beam selection is a challenge since it requires efficient channel estimation via an extensive beam training process for perfect beam alignment. In this paper, we propose a high mobility beam and channel tracking algorithm based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to address this challenge, where the channel changes can be monitored over a certain time. The proposed algorithm tracks the channel changes after establishing a connection with an appropriate beam. The algorithm is first introduced in a multi-user beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with LAA where a single beam is tracked at the user side at downlink transmission. Then, it is employed for multi-beam joint-tracking at the base station side in the uplink transmission. The analysis indicates that under different channel variation conditions, the proposed algorithm outmatches the popular extended Kalman filter (EKF) in both single-beam and multi-beam tracking systems. While it is common to individually track the beams in a multi-beam system scenario, the proposed joint tracking approach can provide around 62% performance enhancement compared to individual beam tracking using the conventional EKF method.

Application-Based Coexistence of Different Waveforms on Non-orthogonal Multiple Access

The coexistence of different wireless communication systems such as LTE and Wi-Fi by sharing the unlicensed band is well studied in the literature. In these studies, various methods are proposed to support the coexistence of systems, including listen-before-talk mechanism, joint user association and resource allocation. However, in this study, the coexistence of different waveform structures in the same resource elements are studied under the theory of non-orthogonal multiple access. This study introduces a paradigm-shift on NOMA towards the application-centric waveform coexistence. Throughout the paper, the coexistence of different waveforms is explained with two specific use cases, which are power-balanced NOMA and joint radar-sensing and communication with NOMA. In addition, some of the previous works in the literature regarding non-orthogonal waveform coexistence are reviewed. However, the concept is not limited to these use cases. With the rapid development of wireless technology, next-generation wireless systems are proposed to be flexible and hybrid, having different kinds of capabilities such as sensing, security, intelligence, control, and computing. Therefore, the concept of different waveforms' coexistence to meet these concerns are becoming impressive for researchers.

Waveform-Domain NOMA: The Future of Multiple Access

This paper introduces a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) concept named waveform-domain NOMA, which proposes the coexistence of different waveforms in the same resource element (RE). Regarding the demands of each user equipments (UEs), appropriate waveforms are assigned intelligently and decoded at the receiver side properly. Since the performance gain of power-domain NOMA compared to multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) degrades in the case of successive interference cancellation (SIC) and channel estimation errors, NOMA is not considered as a work-item in 3GPP anymore. The novel waveform-domain NOMA concept provides a remedy for the problems of the power-domain NOMA scheme as well as flexibility in terms of reliability, latency, and energy efficiency. To mitigate SIC errors, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes aided soft interference cancellation technique is used. As numerically evaluated, the proposed waveform-domain NOMA scheme outperforms the conventional power-domain NOMA in the power-balanced scenario.

Reducing Precoder/Channel Mismatch and Enhancing Secrecy in Practical MIMO Systems Using Artificial Signals

Practical multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems depend on a predefined set of precoders to provide spatial multiplexing gain. This limitation on the flexibility of the precoders affects the overall performance. Here, we propose a transmission scheme that can reduce the effect of mismatch between users' channels and precoders. The scheme uses the channel knowledge to generate an artificial signal, which realigns the predefined precoder to the actual channel. Moreover, the scheme can provide an additional level of secrecy for the communication link. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using bit-error rate (BER), error vector magnitude (EVM), and secrecy capacity. The results show a significant improvement for the legitimate user, along with a degradation for the eavesdropper.

Extensionless Adaptive Transmitter and Receiver Windowing of Beyond 5G Frames

Newer cellular communication generations are planned to allow asynchronous transmission of multiple numerologies (waveforms with different parameters) in adjacent bands, creating unavoidable adjacent channel interference. Most prior work on windowing assume additional extensions reserved for windowing, which does not comply with standards. Whether windowing should be applied at the transmitter or the receiver was not questioned. In this work, we propose two independent algorithms that are implemented at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. These algorithms estimate the transmitter and receiver windowing duration of each resource element (RE) with an aim to improve fair proportional network throughput. While doing so, we solely utilize the available extension that was defined in the standard and present standard-compliant algorithms that also do not require any modifications on the counterparts or control signaling. Furthermore, computationally efficient techniques to apply per-RE transmitter and receiver windowing to signals synthesized and analyzed using conventional cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing are derived and their computational complexities are analyzed. The spectrotemporal relations between optimum window durations at either side, as well as functions of the excess signal to noise ratios, the subcarrier spacings and the throughput gains provided over previous similar techniques are numerically verified.

Bio-inspired Filter Banks for Frequency Recognition of SSVEP-based Brain-computer Interfaces

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and their associated technologies have the potential to shape future forms of communication, control, and security. Specifically, the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based BCIs have the advantages of better recognition accuracy, and higher information transfer rate (ITR) compared to other BCI modalities. To fully exploit the capabilities of such devices, it is necessary to understand the underlying biological features of SSVEPs and design the system considering their inherent characteristics. This paper introduces bio-inspired filter banks (BIFBs) for improved SSVEP frequency recognition. SSVEPs are frequency selective, subject-specific, and their power gets weaker as the frequency of the visual stimuli increases. Therefore, the gain and bandwidth of the filters are designed and tuned based on these characteristics while also incorporating harmonic SSVEP responses. The BIFBs are utilized in the feature extraction stage to increase the separability of classes. This method not only improves the recognition accuracy but also increases the total number of available commands in a BCI system by allowing the use of stimuli frequencies that elicit weak SSVEP responses. The BIFBs are promising particularly in the high-frequency band, which causes less visual fatigue. Hence, the proposed approach might enhance user comfort as well. The BIFB method is tested on two online benchmark datasets and outperforms the compared methods. The results show the potential of bio-inspired design, and the findings will be extended by including further SSVEP characteristics for future SSVEP based BCIs.
