Spin-driven Phonon Splitting in Bond-frustrated ZnCr2S4

Utilizing magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion and IR spectroscopy we provide experimental evidence that the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions in ZnCr_2S_4 at T_N1 = 15 K and T_N2= 8 K are accompanied by significant thermal and phonon anomalies. The anomaly at T_N2 reveals a strong temperature hysteresis typical for a first-order transformation. Due to strong spin-phonon coupling both magnetic phase transitions induce a splitting of phonon modes, where at T_N1 the high-frequency and at T_N2 the low-frequency modes split. The anomalies and phonon splitting observed at T_N2 are strongly suppressed by magnetic field. Regarding the small positive Curie-Weiss temperature Theta= 8 K, we argue that this scenario of two different magnetic phases with concomitant different magneto-elastic couplings results from the strong competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange of equal strength.

Experimental evidence for competition of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic correlations in HgCr2S4

A detailed study of poly- and single crystalline samples of the normal spinel HgCr2S4 is reported. The structural refinement reveals enhanced values of the atomic displacements suggesting closeness to a structural instability. Magnetization, electron-spin resonance and specific-heat studies document strong ferromagnetic fluctuations close to 50 K and the occurrence of complex antiferromagnetic order at TN = 22 K. We found highly unconventional behavior resembling properties of a non-collinear antiferromagnet and soft ferromagnet dependent on temperature and magnetic field. Even weak external magnetic fields disturb the antiferromagnetic order and strongly enhance the ferromagnetic correlations. The conductivity shows an insulating character with non-monotonous temperature behavior and a metal-to-insulator like transition at 80 K well above the magnetic transition. The observed anomalies are related to bond frustration due to competing magnetic exchange interactions between the Cr ions.

Spin dynamics in the low-dimensional magnet TiOCl

We present detailed ESR investigations on single crystals of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl. The anisotropy of the g-factor indicates a stable orbital configuration below room temperature, and allows to estimate the energy of the first excited state as 0.3(1) eV ruling out a possible degeneracy of the orbital ground state. Moreover, we discuss the possible spin relaxation mechanisms in TiOCl and analyze the angular and temperature dependence of the linewidth up to 250 K in terms of anisotropic exchange interactions. Towards higher temperatures an exponential increase of the linewidth is observed, indicating an additional relaxation mechanism.

Unconventional anisotropic superexchange in NaV2O5

The strong line broadening observed in electron spin resonance on NaV$_2$O$_5$ is found to originate from an unusual type of the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction with simultaneous spin-orbit coupling on both sites. The microscopically derived anisotropic exchange constant is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the one obtained from conventional estimations. Based on this result we systematically evaluate the anisotropy of the ESR linewidth in terms of the symmetric anisotropic exchange, only, and we find microscopic evidence for precursor effects of the charge ordering already below 150 K.

Poly-MTO, {(CH_3)_{0.92} Re O_3}_\infty, a Conducting Two-Dimensional Organometallic Oxide

Polymeric methyltrioxorhenium, {(CH_{3})_{0.92}ReO_{3}}_{\infty} (poly-MTO), is the first member of a new class of organometallic hybrids which adopts the structural pattern and physical properties of classical perovskites in two dimensions (2D). We demonstrate how the electronic structure of poly-MTO can be tailored by intercalation of organic donor molecules, such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or bis-(ethylendithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF), and by the inorganic acceptor SbF$_3$. Integration of donor molecules leads to a more insulating behavior of poly-MTO, whereas SbF$_3$ insertion does not cause any significant change in the resistivity. The resistivity data of pure poly-MTO is remarkably well described by a two-dimensional electron system. Below 38 K an unusual resistivity behavior, similar to that found in doped cuprates, is observed: The resistivity initially increases approximately as $ρ\sim$ ln$(1/T$) before it changes into a $\sqrt{T}$ dependence below 2 K. As an explanation we suggest a crossover from purely two-dimensional charge-carrier diffusion within the \{ReO$_2$\}$_{\infty}$ planes at high temperatures to three-dimensional diffusion at low temperatures in a disorder-enhanced electron-electron interaction scenario (Altshuler-Aronov correction). Furthermore, a linear positive magnetoresistance was found in the insulating regime, which is caused by spatial localization of itinerant electrons at some of the Re atoms, which formally adopt a $5d^1$ electronic configuration. X-ray diffraction, IR- and ESR-studies, temperature dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements in various magnetic fields suggest that the electronic structure of poly-MTO can safely be approximated by a purely 2D conductor.

Observation of a Griffiths phase in paramagnetic La1-xSrxMnO3

We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase.

Single-ion anisotropy in the gadolinium pyrochlores studied by an electron paramagnetic resonance

The electron paramagnetic resonance is used to measure the single-ion anisotropy of Gd3+ ions in the pyrochlore structure of (Y{1-x}Gdx)2Ti2O7. A rather strong easy-plane type anisotropy is found. The anisotropy constant D is comparable to the exchange integral J in the prototype Gd2Ti2O7, D~0.75J and exceeds the dipolar energy scale. Physical implications of an easy-plane anisotropy for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet are considered. We calculate the magnetization curves at T=0 and discuss phase transitions in magnetic field.

Relaxor ferroelectricity and colossal magnetocapacitive coupling in ferromagnetic CdCr2S4

Multiferroic materials, which reveal magnetic and electric order, are in the focus of recent solid state research. Especially the simultaneous occurrence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, combined with an intimate coupling of magnetization and polarization via magneto-capacitive effects, could pave the way for a new generation of electronic devices. Here we present measurements on a simple cubic spinel with unusual properties: It shows ferromagnetic order and simultaneously relaxor ferroelectricity, i.e. a ferroelectric cluster state, reached by a smeared-out phase transition, both with sizable ordering temperatures and moments. Close to the ferromagnetic ordering temperature the magneto-capacitive coupling, characterized by a variation of the dielectric constant in an external magnetic field, reaches colossal values of nearly 500%. We attribute the relaxor properties to geometric frustration, which is well known for magnetic moments, but here is found to impede long-range order of the structural degrees of freedom.

Anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility in LaTiO$_{3}$: The electron-distribution picture in the ground state

The energy-level scheme and wave functions of the titanium ions in LaTiO$_{3}$ are calculated using crystal-field theory and spin-orbit coupling. The theoretically derived temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility agree well with experimental data obtained in an untwinned single crystal. The refined fitting procedure reveals an almost isotropic molecular field and a temperature dependence of the van Vleck susceptibility. The charge distribution of the 3d--electron on the Ti positions and the principle values of the quadrupole moments are derived and agree with NMR data and recent measurements of orbital momentum $ $ and crystal-field splitting. The low value of the ordered moment in the antiferromagnetic phase is discussed.

Orbital Glass in FeCr2S4

Low-temperature heat-capacity investigations on the spinel FeCr2S4 with ferrimagnetic spin order and orbitally degenerated Jahn-Teller active Fe2+ ions in a tetrahedral crystal field, provide experimental evidence of an orbital liquid state above 10 K. We demonstrate that the low-temperature transition at 10 K arises from orbital order and is very sensitive to fine tuning of the stoichiometry in polycrystals. In single crystals the orbital order is fully suppressed resulting in an orbital glass state with the heat capacity following a strict T^2 dependence as temperature approaches zero.

Complex interplay of 3d and 4f magnetism in La:GdMnO3

We report on structural, magnetic, electrical, and thermodynamic properties of Gd-doped LaMnO3 single crystals for Gd doping levels 0 <= x <= 1. At room temperature, for all doping levels the orthorhombic O' phase is indicative for a strong Jahn-Teller distortion. All compositions are insulating. The magnetism of La$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$MnO$_3$ is dominated by the relatively strong Mn-Mn exchange. The weakening of the antiferromagnetic interactions due to the significant decrease f the Mn-O-Mn bond angles leads to the continuous suppression of the magnetic phase-transition temperatures into the antiferromagnetic low-temperature phase for increasing Gd doping. The magnetization can only be explained assuming canting of the manganese spins. The magnetic moments of Gd are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled within the sublattice and are antiferromagnetically coupled to the Mn moments. For intermediate concentrations compensation points are found, below which the spontaneous magnetization becomes negative. In pure GdMnO3 the Mn spins undergo a transition into a complex, probably incommensurate magnetic structure at 41.5 K, followed by a further ordering transition at 16-20 K revealing weak ferromagnetism due to canting and finally by the onset of magnetic order in the Gd sublattice at 6.5 K. At the lowest temperatures and low external fields both magnetic sublattices reveal a canted structure with antiparallel ferromagnetic components.

Spin fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet GdI_2 studied by Electron Spin Resonance

The spin dynamics of GdI_2 have been investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The temperature dependences of the resonance field and ESR intensity are well described by the model for the spin susceptibility proposed by Eremin et al. [Phys. Rev. B 64, 064425 (2001)]. The temperature dependence of the resonance linewidth shows a maximum similar to the electrical resistance and is discussed in terms of scattering processes between conduction electrons and localized spins.

Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO$_3$

LaTiO$_3$ is known as Mott-insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N}=146$ K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity, electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single crystals. At $T_{\rm N}$ significant structural changes appear, which are volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the dc-resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret these experimental observations as evidence of orbital order.

The Orbital Order Parameter in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 probed by Electron Spin Resonance

The temperature dependence of the electron-spin resonance linewidth in La0.95Sr0.05MnO3 has been determined and analyzed in the paramagnetic regime across the orbital ordering transition. From the temperature dependence and the anisotropy of linewidth and $g$-value the orbital order can be unambiguously determined via the mixing angle of the wave functions of the $e_{\rm g}$-doublet. The linewidth shows a similar evolution with temperature as resonant x-ray scattering results.

Anisotropic Colossal Magnetoresistance Effects in Fe_{1-x}Cu_xCr_2S_4

A detailed study of the electronic transport and magnetic properties of Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$Cr$_2$S$_4$ ($x \leq 0.5$) on single crystals is presented. The resistivity is investigated for $2 \leq T \leq 300$ K in magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla and under hydrostatic pressure up to 16 kbar. In addition magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were performed. FMR and magnetization data reveal a pronounced magnetic anisotropy, which develops below the Curie temperature, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, and increases strongly towards lower temperatures. Increasing the Cu concentration reduces this effect. At temperatures below 35 K the magnetoresistance, $MR = \frac{ρ(0) - ρ(H)}{ρ(0)}$, exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the magnetic field, probably due to an enhanced anisotropy. Applying the field along the hard axis leads to a change of sign and a strong increase of the absolute value of the magnetoresistance. On the other hand the magnetoresistance remains positive down to lower temperatures, exhibiting a smeared out maximum with the magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The results are discussed in the ionic picture using a triple-exchange model for electron hopping as well as a half-metal utilizing a band picture.

Magnetic phase diagram and structure of the magnetic phases in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCu_2Si_2O_7: symmetry analysis

We have performed a symmetry analysis of the properties of the recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional compound BaCu_2Si_2O_7. The existence of the unusual spin-reorientation transitions is explained as an effect of the unusually strong relativistic interactions. The possible connection between the magnitude of the relativistic interactions and the low-dimensional structure of the BaCu_2Si_2O_7 is discussed. The structure of the magnetic phases is determined.

ESR investigation of the spin dynamics in (Gd_{1-x}Y_{x})_2PdSi_{3}

We report electron-spin resonance measurements in polycrystalline samples of (Gd_{1-x}Y_{x})_2PdSi_{3}. We observe the onset of a broadening of the linewidth and of a decrease of the resonance field at approximately twice the Neel temperature in the paramagnetic state, this characteristic temperature coincides with the electrical resistivity minimum. The high-temperature behaviour of the linewidth is governed by a strong bottleneck effect.
