Screening of long-range Coulomb interactions in the quasi two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: A combined quantum Monte Carlo and Feynman diagram study

By combining fermion Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations with diagrammatic theory, we have calculated the dielectric screening and the screened potential, in a quasi 2D Hubbard model for cuprate superconductors with and without 1/r Coulomb potential. At half filling, we find that the Hubbard electrons contribute only a minor fraction, Delta(epsilon) ~0.9 of the observed in-plane dielectric constant of the cuprates, epsilon ~4.7. With increasing doping x, the 1/r interaction is rapidly suppressed by metallic screening. Surprisingly, near x ~5%, the low-frequency part of the screened potential V_S becomes attractive, at distances r \ge 1. At r=1, it reaches maximum attraction strength for dopings x ~13-15% and becomes repulsive again for for x ~23-25%. Similar results are found for the pure 2D Hubbard model. The 1/r interaction enhances the on-site and 1st neighbor overscreening attraction already present in the pure model at finite doping. Our results are potentially relevant for the d-wave pairing mechanism in the cuprates, suggesting that the screened 1/r potential could actually increase the d-wave attraction, in the 5-25% doping regime. They may also have implications for the isotope effect and its doping dependence. At larger dopings, x>15%, the screened potential becomes attractive even on-site, suggesting that it could support or enhance s-wave pairing. We also give a rigorous analytical proof that the screened on-site interaction must become attractive near half-filling in the repulsive large-U-limit, with and without 1/r interaction. We present a simple physical interpretation of this result in terms of retardation effects. We also point out that on-site overscreening implies singularities in the imaginary frequency dependence of the irreducible polarization insertion and its 3-point vertex function.

d-Wave Pairing in the Presence of Long-Range Coulomb Interactions

The one-band extended Hubbard model in two dimensions near band-filling 1/2 is solved in the fluctuation exchange approximation, including the long-range (1/r) part of the Coulomb interaction, up to 4th neighbor distance. Our results suggest that d_(x^2 - y^2) pairing in the Hubbard model is robust against the inclusion of long-range Coulomb interactions with moderate 1st neighbor repulsion strength V_1. d_(x^2 - y^2) pairing is suppressed only at large V_1 (>~ 0.25U-0.4U), due to incipient charge density wave instabilities.

Overscreening in Hubbard electron systems

We show that doping-induced charge fluctuations in strongly correlated Hubbard electron systems near the 1/2-filled, insulating limit cause overscreening of the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. The resulting attractive screened interaction potential supports d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing with a strongly peaked, doping dependent pairing strength at lower doping, followed by s-wave pairing at larger doping levels.

Superconducting instability in the Holstein-Hubbard model: A numerical renormalization group study

We have studied the d-wave pairing-instability in the two-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model at the level of a full fluctuation exchange approximation which treats both Coulomb and electron-phonon (EP) interaction diagrammatically on an equal footing. A generalized numerical renormalization group technique has been developed to solve the resulting self-consistent field equations. The $d$-wave superconducting phase diagram shows an optimal T_c at electron concentration ~ 0.9 for the purely electronic Hubbard system. The EP interaction suppresses the d-wave T_c which drops to zero when the phonon-mediated on-site attraction $U_p$ becomes comparable to the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$. The isotope exponent $α$ is negative in this model and small compared to the classical BCS value $α_{BCS} = 1/2$ or compared to typical observed values in non-optimally doped cuprate superconductors.

The Isotope Effect in d-Wave Superconductors

Based on recently proposed anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuation exchange models for $d_{x^2-y^2}$-superconductors, we show that coupling to harmonic phonons {\it{cannot}} account for the observed isotope effect in the cuprate high-$T_c$ materials, whereas coupling to strongly anharmonic multiple-well lattice tunneling modes {\it{can}}. Our results thus point towards a strongly enhanced {\it{effective}} electron-phonon coupling and a possible break-down of Migdal-Eliashberg theory in the cuprates.
