Magnetic Phase Transitions in One-dimensional Strongly Attractive Three-Component Ultracold Fermions

We investigate the nature of trions, pairing and quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional strongly attractive three-component ultracold fermions in external fields. Exact results for the groundstate energy, critical fields, magnetization and phase diagrams are obtained analytically from the Bethe ansatz solutions. Driven by Zeeman splitting, the system shows exotic phases of trions, bound pairs, a normal Fermi liquid and four mixtures of these states. Particularly, a smooth phase transition from a trionic phase into a pairing phase occurs as the highest hyperfine level separates from the two lower energy levels. In contrast, there is a smooth phase transition from the trionic phase into a normal Fermi liquid as the lowest level separates from the two higher levels.

Matrix product decomposition and classical simulation of quantum dynamics in the presence of a symmetry

We propose a refined matrix product state representation for many-body quantum states that are invariant under SU(2) transformations, and indicate how to extend the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm in order to simulate time evolution in an SU(2) invariant system. The resulting algorithm is tested in a critical quantum spin chain and shown to be significantly more efficient than the standard TEBD.

Note on the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach to the quantum phase diagram of the strong coupling ladder compounds

We investigate the low-temperature phase diagram of the exactly solved su(4) two-leg spin ladder as a function of the rung coupling $J_{\perp}$ and magnetic field $H$ by means of the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). In the absence of a magnetic field the model exhibits three quantum phases, while in the presence of a strong magnetic field there is no singlet ground state for ferromagnetic rung coupling. For antiferromagnetic rung coupling, there is a gapped phase in the regime H < H_{c1}, a fully polarized gapped phase for H > H_{c2} and a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime H_{c1} < H < H_{c2}. The critical behaviour derived using the TBA is consistent with the existing experimental, numerical and perturbative results for the strong coupling ladder compounds. This includes the spin excitation gap and the critical fields H_{c1} and H_{c2}, which are in excellent agreement with the experimental values for the known strong coupling ladder compounds (5IAP)_2CuBr_4 2H_2 O, Cu_2(C_5 H_{12} N_2)_2 Cl_4 and (C_5 H_{12} N)_2 CuBr_4. In addition we predict the spin gap $Δ\approx J_{\perp}-{1/2}J_{\parallel}$ for the weak coupling compounds with $J_{\perp} \sim J_{\parallel}$, such as (VO)_2 P_2 O_7, and also show that the gap opens for arbitrary $J_{\perp}/ J_{\parallel}$.

Exact solvability in contemporary physics

We review the theory for exactly solving quantum Hamiltonian systems through the algebraic Bethe ansatz. We also demonstrate how this theory applies to current studies in Bose-Einstein condensation and metallic grains which are of nanoscale size.

Algebraic Bethe ansatz method for the exact calculation of energy spectra and form factors: applications to models of Bose-Einstein condensates and metallic nanograins

In this review we demonstrate how the algebraic Bethe ansatz is used for the calculation of the energy spectra and form factors (operator matrix elements in the basis of Hamiltonian eigenstates) in exactly solvable quantum systems. As examples we apply the theory to several models of current interest in the study of Bose-Einstein condensates, which have been successfully created using ultracold dilute atomic gases. The first model we introduce describes Josephson tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. It can be used not only for the study of tunneling between condensates of atomic gases, but for solid state Josephson junctions and coupled Cooper pair boxes. The theory is also applicable to models of atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, with two examples given and analysed. Additionally, these same two models are relevant to studies in quantum optics. Finally, we discuss the model of Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer in this framework, which is appropriate for systems of ultracold fermionic atomic gases, as well as being applicable for the description of superconducting correlations in metallic grains with nanoscale dimensions. In applying all of the above models to physical situations, the need for an exact analysis of small scale systems is established due to large quantum fluctuations which render mean-field approaches inaccurate.

Thermodynamic properties of an integrable quantum spin ladder with boundary impurities

An integrable quantum spin ladder based on the SU(4) symmetry algebra with boundary defects is studied in the framework of boundary integrability. Five nontrivial solutions of the reflection equations lead to different boundary impurities. In each case the energy spectrum is determined using the quantum inverse scattering method. The thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. In particular, the susceptibility and the magnetization of the model in the vicinity of the critical points are derived along with differing magnetic properites for antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic impurity couplings at the edges. The results are applicable to the strong coupling ladder compounds, such as Cu_2(C_5 H_12 N_2)_2 Cl_4.

Exact form factors for the Josephson tunneling current and relative particle number fluctuations in a model of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Form factors are derived for a model describing the coherent Josephson tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. This is achieved by studying the exact solution of the model in the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In this approach the form factors are expressed through determinant representations which are functions of the roots of the Bethe ansatz equations.

Integrability and exact spectrum of a pairing model for nucleons

A pairing model for nucleons, introduced by Richardson in 1966, which describes proton-neutron pairing as well as proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing, is re-examined in the context of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. Specifically, this shows that the model is integrable by enabling the explicit construction of the conserved operators. We determine the eigenvalues of these operators in terms of the Bethe ansatz, which in turn leads to an expression for the energy eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian.

Exact solution at integrable coupling of a model for the Josephson effect between small metallic grains

A model is introduced for two reduced BCS systems which are coupled through the transfer of Cooper pairs between the systems. The model may thus be used in the analysis of the Josephson effect arising from pair tunneling between two strongly coupled small metallic grains. At a particular coupling strength the model is integrable and explicit results are derived for the energy spectrum, conserved operators, integrals of motion, and wave function scalar products. It is also shown that form factors can be obtained for the calculation of correlation functions. Further, a connection with perturbed conformal field theory is made.

Superconducting correlations in metallic nanoparticles: exact solution of the BCS model by the algebraic Bethe ansatz

Superconducting pairing of electrons in nanoscale metallic particles with discrete energy levels and a fixed number of electrons is described by the reduced BCS model Hamiltonian. We show that this model is integrable by the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The eigenstates, spectrum, conserved operators, integrals of motion, and norms of wave functions are obtained. Furthermore, the quantum inverse problem is solved, meaning that form factors and correlation functions can be explicitly evaluated. Closed form expressions are given for the form factors that describe superconducting pairing.

Exact solution for the Bariev model with boundary fields

The Bariev model with open boundary conditions is introduced and analysed in detail in the framework of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. Two classes of independent boundary reflecting $K$-matrices leading to four different types of boundary fields are obtained by solving the reflection equations. The models are exactly solved by means of the algebraic nested Bethe ansatz method and the four sets of Bethe ansatz equations as well as their corresponding energy expressions are derived.

Integrable Kondo impurities in the one-dimensional supersymmetric U model of strongly correlated electrons

Integrable Kondo impurities in the one-dimensional supersymmetric U model of strongly correlated electrons are studied by means of the boundary graded quantum inverse scattering method. The boundary K matrices depending on the local magnetic moments of the impurities are presented as nontrivial realizations of the reflection equation algebras in an impurity Hilbert space. Furthermore, the model Hamiltonian is diagonalized and the Bethe ansatz equations are derived. It is interesting to note that our model exhibits a free parameter in the bulk Hamiltonian but no free parameter exists on the boundaries. This is in sharp contrast to the impurity models arising from the supersymmetric t-J and extended Hubbard models where there is no free parameter in the bulk but there is a free parameter on each boundary.

Further, the model is solved by using the algebraic Bethe ansatz method and the Bethe ansatz equations are obtained.

Boundary two-parameter eight-state supersymmetric fermion model and Bethe ansatz solution

The recently introduced two-parameter eight-state $U_q[gl(3|1)]$ supersymmetric fermion model is extended to include boundary terms. Nine classes of boundary conditions are constructed, all of which are shown to be integrable via the graded boundary quantum inverse scattering method. The boundary systems are solved by using the coordinate Bethe ansatz and the Bethe ansatz equations are given for all nine cases.
