X-ray study of structural domains in the near-surface region of SrTiO3-substrates with Y0.6Pr0.4Ba2Cu3O7$ / La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices grown on top

We investigated with synchrotron x-ray diffraction and reflectometry the formation of structural domains in the near-surface region of single crystalline SrTiO3 (001) substrates with Y0.6Pr0.4Ba2Cu3O7 / La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices grown on top. We find that the antiferrodistortive cubic-to-tetragonal transition, which occurs at T_STO = 104K in the bulk and at a considerably higher temperature of at least 120K in the surface region of SrTiO3, has only a weak influence on the domain formation. The strongest changes occur instead in the vicinitiy of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in SrTiO3 around 65K, where pronounced surface facets develop that reach deep (at least several micrometers) into the SrTiO3 substrate. These micrometer-sized facets are anisotropic and tilted with respect to one another by up to 0.5deg along the shorter direction. Finally, we find that a third structural transition below 30K gives rise to significant changes in the spread of the c-axis parameters. Overall, our data provide evidence for a strong mutual interaction between the stuctural properties of the SrTiO3 surface and the multilayer grown on top.

Eduction and Economy -- An Analysis of Statistical Data

In this paper the correlation between education, research and macroeconomic strength of countries at a global scale is analyzed on the basis of statistical data published by the UNIDO and OECD. It uses sets of composite indicators describing the economical performance and competitiveness as well as those relevant for human development, education, knowledge and technology achievement and correlates them. It turns out that for countries with a human development index (HDI) below 0.7 the basic education and technology achievement indices are the driving force for further development, whereas for the industrialized countries the knowledge index as a composite education and communication index has the strongest effect on the economic strength of a country as measured by the gross domestic product.

Superconductivity in epitaxial thin films of NaxCoO2 y D2O

The observation of superconductivity in the layered transition metal oxide NaxCoO2 y H2O (K. Takada et al., Nature 422, 53 (2003)) has caused a tremendous upsurge of scientific interest due to its similarities and its differences to the copper based high-temperature superconductors. Two years after the discovery, we report the fabrication of single-phase superconducting epitaxial thin films of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3 D2O grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. This opens additional roads for experimental research exploring the superconducting state and the phase diagram of this unconventional material.

On Magnetic Interlayer Coupling and Proximity Effect in a La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$(10 nm)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$(10 nm) Superlattice

We present a study of interlayer coupling and proximity effects in a La$_{0.66}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$(10 nm)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$(10 nm) superlattice. Using element-sensitive x-ray probes, the magnetic state of Mn can be probed without seeing the strong diamagnetism of the superconductor, which makes this approach ideal to study changes in the magnetic properties across the superconducting transition. By a combined experiment using {\it in situ} transport measurements during polarized soft x-ray measurements, we were able to see no noticeable influence of the superconducting state on the magnetic properties and no evidence for magnetic coupling across a 10 nm YBCO layer.

Comment on "Raman spectroscopy study of NaxCoO2 and superconducting NaxCoO2 yH2O"

The effect of surface degradation of the thermolectric cobaltite on Raman spectra is discussed and compared to experimental results from Co3O4 single crystals. We conclude that on NaCl flux grown NaxCoO2 crystals a surface layer of Co3O4 easily forms that leads to the observation of an intense phonon around 700 cm-1 [Phys. Rev. B 70, 052502 (2004)]. Raman spectra on freshly cleaved crystals from optical floating zone ovens do not show such effects and have a high frequency phonon cut-off at approximately 600 cm -1 [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 167204 (2006)]. We discuss the relation of structural dimensionality, electronic correlations and the high frequency phonon cut-off of the thermolectric cobaltite.

Dramatic role of critical current anisotropy on flux avalanches in MgB2 films

Anisotropic penetration of magnetic flux in MgB2 films grown on vicinal sapphire substrates is investigated using magneto-optical imaging. Regular penetration above 10 K proceeds more easily along the substrate surface steps, anisotropy of the critical current being 6%. At lower temperatures the penetration occurs via abrupt dendritic avalanches that preferentially propagate {\em perpendicular} to the surface steps. This inverse anisotropy in the penetration pattern becomes dramatic very close to 10 K where all flux avalanches propagate in the strongest-pinning direction. The observed behavior is fully explained using a thermomagnetic model of the dendritic instability.

Spin-polarized quasiparticle injection effects in YBCO thin films

We report detailed transport studies on ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures. Epitaxial heterostructures of half-metal colossal magnetoresistive La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (HM-CMR) and high Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) are grown on SrTiO3 (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using the HM--CMR layer as source for spin-polarized quasiparticles, we show the effect of injection of spin-polarized quasiparticles into the ab-plane and along the c-axis of YBCO. The results show a drop in the ab-plane resistance Rab (T) in the case of injection along the c-axis that is discussed to be related to the opening of a pseudogap.

Magnetic Proximity Effect in Perovskite Superconductor/Ferromagnet Multilayers

$\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7/La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ superconducting/ferromagnetic (SC/FM) multilayers have been studied by neutron reflectometry. Evidence for a characteristic difference between the structural and magnetic depth profiles is obtained from the occurrence of a structurally forbidden Bragg peak in the FM state. The comparison with simulated reflectivity curves allows us to identify two possible magnetization profiles: a sizable magnetic moment within the SC layer antiparallel to the one in the FM layer (inverse proximity effect), or a ``dead'' region in the FM layer with zero net magnetic moment. The former scenario is supported by an anomalous SC-induced enhancement of the off-specular reflection, which testifies to a strong mutual interaction of SC and FM order parameters.

Substrate surface engineering for tailoring properties of functional ceramic thin films

Using oxide substrates for functional ceramic thin film deposition beyond their usual application as chemical inert, lattice-matched support for the films represents a novel concept in ceramic thin film research. The substrates are applied as a functional element in order to controllably modify the atom arrangement and the growth mode of ceramic prototype materials such as cuprate superconductors and colossal magnetoresistance manganites. One example is the use of epitaxial strain to adjust the relative positions of cations and anions in the film and thus modify their physical properties. The other makes use of vicinal cut SrTiO3 which enables the fabrication of regular nanoscale step and terrace structures. In YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown on vicinal cut SrTiO3 single crystals a regular array of antiphase boundaries is generated causing an anisotropic enhancement of flux-line pinning. In the case of La-Ca-Mn-O thin films grown on vicinal cut substrates it could be demonstrated that magnetic in-plane anisotropy is achieved.

Enhancement of flux-line pinning in all-oxide superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures

We have studied the local critical current density, jc, in the superconductor thin film of bilayer structures consisting of YBa2Cu3O7 and the ferromagnets La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 and SrRuO3, respectively, by means of quantitative magneto-optics. A pronounced hysteresis of jc was observed which is ascribed to the magnetization state of the ferromagnetic layer. The results are discussed within the frame of magnetic vortex - wall interactions.

Suppression of Superconductivity in YBCO/LCMO Superlattices

The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed of alternating YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ and La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 nm to 20 nm while the thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. We clearly observe that the superconducting condensate density in the superconducting state of superlattice is drastically reduced by the magnetic subsystem which may be connected with proximity effects that distort the gap symmetry and thus suppress superconductivity.

Detecting percolative metal-insulator transition in manganites by resistive relaxation

We report an experimental study of the time dependence of resistivity of a La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ ultrathin film in order to elucidate the underlying mechanism for metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance CMR effect. There is a clear change of sign in the resistive relaxation rate across the metal-insulator transition driven by temperature or magnetic field. When measuring in increasing temperature or decreasing magnetic field, the resistivity increases with time in the metallic state but decreases with time in the insulating state. These relaxation processes indicate that the metal-insulator transition and the associated CMR are a direct result of phase separation and of percolation of the metallic phase.

Spin-wave scattering at low temperatures in manganite films

The temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$ dependence of the resistivity $ρ$ has been measured for La$_{0.8-y}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_{3}$ (y=0 and 0.128) films grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. The low-temperature $ρ$ in the ferromagnetic metallic region follows well $ρ(H,T)=ρ_{0}(H)+A(H)ω_{s}/\sinh (\hbar ω_{s}/2k_{B}T)+B(H)T^{7/2}$ with $ρ_{0}$ being the residual resistivity. We attribute the second and third term to small-polaron and spin-wave scattering, respectively. Our analysis based on these scattering mechanisms also gives the observed difference between the metal-insulator transition temperatures of the films studied. Transport measurements in applied magnetic field further indicate that spin-wave scattering is a key transport mechanism at low temperatures.

Effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of magnesium diboride

We discuss the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the superconducting properties of MgB$_{2}$ within the framework of Eliashberg theory. By considering the pressure dependences of all parameters appearing in the McMillan formula, we show that the calculated pressure derivative of $T_{c}$ as well as the variation of $T_{c}$ with pressure are in good agreement with recent measurements. The pressure dependences of the energy gap $Δ_{0}$, the effective interaction strength $N(E_{F})v$, the critical magnetic field $H_{c}(0)$, and the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ are also predicted for this system. A comparison of pressure effect in non-transition elements clearly suggests that MgB$_{2}$ is an electron-phonon mediated superconductor.

Strain effect on electronic transport and ferromagnetic transition temperature in La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films

We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E_{P}$ is reduced with the decrease of film thickness. We found that the strain dependence of $T_{c}$ mainly results from the strain-induced electron-phonon coupling. The strain effect on $E_{P}$ is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Complex conductivity of $\rm Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7$ thin films measured by coherent terahertz spectroscopy

The complex transmission of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystal thin films has been measured in the range 0.2-1.0 THz using time domain spectroscopy. The complex conductivity is calculated without using a Kramers-Kronig analysis. All of the superconducting samples show a peak in $σ_1(T)$ below $T_c$. The underdoped samples show a deviation from $1/(α+βT)$ behavior above $T_c$ that may be linked with the onset of a spin gap.

Anomalous Behavior Of The Complex Conductivity Of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 Observed With THz Spectroscopy

We have measured the electrodynamic properties of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystal thin films as a function of temperature using coherent THz-time-domain spectroscopy. We obtain directly the complex conductivity $σ=σ_1+iσ_2$, the London penetration depth $λ_L$, the plasma frequency $ω_p$, and the quasiparticle scattering rate $1/τ$. We find that $1/τ$ drops exponentially rapidly with $T$ below the critical temperature in {\em all} the superconducting samples, implying that this behavior is a {\em signature} of high-$T_c$ superconductivity. The plasma frequency decreases with increasing Pr content, providing evidence that Pr depletes carriers, leaving the CuO planes {\em underdoped}. Both the conductivity in the THz region and the dc resistivity yield evidence for the opening of a spin gap {\em above} $T_c$.

Kinetic Inductance and Penetration Depth of Thin Superconducting Films Measured by THz Pulse Spectroscopy

We measure the transmission of THz pulses through thin films of YBCO at temperatures between 10K and 300K. The pulses possess a useable bandwidth extending from 0.1 -- 1.5 THz (3.3 cm^-1 -- 50 cm^-1). Below T_c we observe pulse reshaping caused by the kinetic inductance of the superconducting charge carriers. From transmission data, we extract values of the London penetration depth as a function of temperature, and find that it agrees well with a functional form (λ(0)/λ(T))^2 = 1 - (T/T_c)^α, where λ(0) = 148 nm, and α= 2. *****Figures available upon request*****
