The Three Loop Isotopy and Framed Isotopy Invariants of Virtual Knots

This paper introduces two virtual knot theory ``analogues'' of a well-known family of invariants for knots in thickened surfaces: the Grishanov-Vassiliev finite-type invariants of order two. The first, called the three loop isotopy invariant, is an invariant of virtual knots while the second, called the three loop framed isotopy invariant, is a regular isotopy invariant of framed virtual knots. The properties of these invariants are investigated at length. In addition, we make precise the informal notion of ``analogue''. Using this formal definition, it is proved that a generalized three loop invariant is a virtual knot theory analogue of a generalization of the Grishanov-Vassiliev invariants of order two.

Vassiliev Invariants from Parity Mappings

Parity mappings from the chords of a Gauss diagram to the integers is defined. The parity of the chords is used to construct families of invariants of Gauss diagrams and virtual knots. One family consists of degree $n$ Vassiliev invariants.

Smoothed Invariants

We construct two knot invariants. The first knot invariant is a sum constructed using linking numbers. The second is an invariant of flat knots and is a formal sum of flat knots obtained by smoothing pairs of crossings. This invariant can be used in conjunction with other flat invariants, forming a family of invariants. Both invariants are constructed using the parity of a crossing.

Bounds on Mosaic Knots

We investigate relationships between bounds on the crossing number and the mosaic number of mosaic knots.

Virtual Homotopy

Two welded (respectively virtual) link diagrams are homotopic if one may be transformed into the other by a sequence of extended Reidemeister moves, classical Reidemeister moves, and self crossing changes. In this paper, we extend Milnor's mu and bar mu invariants to welded and virtual links. We conclude this paper with several examples, and compute the mu invariants using the Magnus expansion and Polyak's skein relation for the mu invariants.

Pure Virtual Braids Homotopic to the Identity Braid

Two virtual link diagrams are homotopic if one may be transformed into the other by a sequence of virtual Reidemeister moves, classical Reidemeister moves, and self crossing changes. We recall the pure virtual braid group. We then describe the set of pure virtual braids that are homotopic to the identity braid.

Minimal surface representations of virtual knots and links

Kuperberg [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 3 (2003) 587-591] has shown that a virtual knot corresponds (up to generalized Reidemeister moves) to a unique embedding in a thichened surface of minimal genus. If a virtual knot diagram is equivalent to a classical knot diagram then this minimal surface is a sphere. Using this result and a generalised bracket polynomial, we develop methods that may determine whether a virtual knot diagram is non-classical (and hence non-trivial). As examples we show that, except for special cases, link diagrams with a single virtualization and link diagrams with a single virtual crossing are non-classical.

Non-Trivial Realizations of Virtual Link Diagrams

A realization of a virtual link diagram is obtained by choosing over/under markings for each virtual crossing. Any realization can also be obtained from some representation of the virtual link. (A representation of a virtual link is a link diagram on an oriented 2-dimensional surface.) We prove that if a minimal genus representation meets certain criteria then there is a minimal genus representation resulting in a knotted realization.

Virtual Knot Diagrams and the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev Invariant

The Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of classical link diagrams is generalized to virtual link diagrams. This invariant is unchanged by the framed Reidemeister moves and the Kirby calculus. As a result, it is also an invariant of the 3-manifolds represented by the classical link diagrams. This generalization is used to demonstrate that there are virtual knot diagrams with a non-trivial Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant and trivial 3-manifold fundamental group.

Virtual knots undetected by 1 and 2-strand bracket polynomials

Kishino's knot is not detected by the fundamental group or the bracket polynomial; these invariants cannot differentiate between Kishino's knot and the unknot. However, we can show that Kishino's knot is not equivalent to unknot by applying either the 3-strand bracket polynomial or the surface bracket polynomial. In this paper, we construct two non-trivial virtual knot diagrams, $ K_D $ and $ K_m $, that are not not detected by the bracket polynomial or the 2-strand bracket polynomial. From these diagrams, we construct two infinite families of non-classical virtual knot diagrams that are not detected by the bracket polynomial. Additionally, we note these virtual knot diagrams are trivial as flats.

Unitary Solutions to the Yang-Baxter Equation in Dimension Four

In this paper, we determine all unitary solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation in dimension four. Quantum computation motivates this study. This set of solutions will assist in clarifying the relationship between quantum entanglement and topological entanglement. We present a variety of facts about the Yang-Baxter equation for the reader unfamiliar with the equation.
