Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, Metric, Other Observables and Physical Implications

The metric associated with a quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonian and its physical implications are scrutinised. Consequences of the non-uniqueness such as the question of the probability interpretation and the possible and forbidden choices of additional observables are investigated and exemplified by specific illustrative examples. In particular it is argued that the improper identification of observables lies at the origin of the claimed violation of the brachistchrone transition time between orthogonal states. The need for further physical input to remove ambiguities is pointed out.

Choice of a Metric for the Non-Hermitian Oscillator

The harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian, when augmented by a non-Hermitian $\cal{PT}$-symmetric part, can be transformed into a Hermitian Hamiltonian. This is achieved by introducing a metric which, in general, renders other observables such as the usual momentum or position as non-Hermitian operators. The metric depends on one real parameter, the full range of which is investigated. The explicit functional dependence of the metric and each associated Hamiltonian is given. A specific choice of this parameter determines a specific combination of position and momentum as being an observable; this can be in particular either standard position or momentum, but not both simultaneously. Singularities of the metric are explored and their removability is investigated. The physical significance of these findings is discussed

Analysis of the Strong Coupling Limit of the Richardson Hamiltonian using the Dyson Mapping

The Richardson Hamiltonian describes superconducting correlations in a metallic nanograin. We do a perturbative analysis of this and related Hamiltonians, around the strong pairing limit, without having to invoke Bethe Ansatz solvability. Rather we make use of a boson expansion method known as the Dyson mapping. Thus we uncover a selection rule that facilitates both time-independent and time-dependent perturbation expansions. In principle the model we analise is realised in a very small metalic grain of a very regular shape. The results we obtain point to subtleties sometimes neglected when thinking of the superconducting state as a Bose-Einstein condensate. An appendix contains a general presentation of time-independent perturbation theory for operators with degenerate spectra, with recursive formulas for corrections of arbitrarily high orders.

CPT-conserving Hamiltonians and their nonlinear supersymmetrization using differential charge-operators C

A brief overview is given of recent developments and fresh ideas at the intersection of PT and/or CPT-symmetric quantum mechanics with supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM). We study the consequences of the assumption that the "charge" operator C is represented in a differential-operator form. Besides the freedom allowed by the Hermiticity constraint for the operator CP, encouraging results are obtained in the second-order case. The integrability of intertwining relations proves to match the closure of nonlinear SUSY algebra. In an illustration, our CPT-symmetric SUSY QM leads to non-Hermitian polynomial oscillators with real spectrum which turn out to be PT-asymmetric.

A Matrix Model for Fractional Quantum Hall States

We have developed a matrix model for FQH states at filling factor ν_{k_1k_2} going beyond the Laughlin theory. To illustrate our idea, we have considered an FQH system of a finite number N=(N_{1}+N_{2}) of electrons with filling factor ν_{k_{1}k_{2}} = ν_{p_{1}p_{2}}=\frac{p_{2}}{p_{1}p_{2}-1}; p_{1} is an odd integer and p_{2} is an even integer. The ν_{p_{1}p_{2}} series corresponds just to the level two of the Haldane hierarchy; it recovers the Laughlin series ν_{p_{1}} =\frac{1}{p_{1}} by going to the limit p_{2} large and contains several observable FQH states such as ν= 2/3, 2/5, >....

Boson-fermion mapping of collective fermion-pair algebras

We construct finite Dyson boson-fermion mappings of general collective algebras extended by single-fermion operators. A key element in the construction is the implementation of a similarity transformation which transforms boson-fermion images obtained directly from the supercoherent state method. In addition to the general construction, we give detailed applications to SO(2N), SU(l+1), SO(5), and SO(8) algebras.

Spin in the path integral: anti-commuting versus commuting variables

We discuss the equivalence between the path integral representations of spin dynamics for anti-commuting (Grassmann) and commuting variables and establish a bosonization dictionary for both generators of spin and single fermion operators. The content of this construction in terms of the representations of the spin algebra is discussed in the path integral setting. Finally it is shown how a `free field realization' (Dyson mapping) can be constructed in the path integral.

Non-abelian bosonization from factored coset models in path integrals

We present a derivation of abelian and non-abelian bosonization in a path integral setting by expressing the generating functional for current-current correlation functions as a product of a $G/G$-coset model, which is dynamically trivial, and a bosonic part which contains the dynamics. A BRST symmetry can be identified which leads to smooth bosonization in both the abelian and non-abelian cases.

Loosely bound hyperons in the SU(3) Skyrme model

Hyperon pairs bound in deuteron like states are obtained within the SU(3) Skyrme model in agreement with general expectations from boson exchange models. The central binding from the flavor symmetry breaking terms increases with the strangeness contents of the interacting baryons whereas the kinetic non-linear $σ$-model term fixes the spin and isospin of the bound pair. We give a complete account of the interactions of octet baryons within the product approximation to baryon number $B=2$ configurations.

SDG fermion-pair algebraic SO(12) and Sp(10) models and their boson realizations

It is shown how the boson mapping formalism may be applied as a useful many-body tool to solve a fermion problem. This is done in the context of generalized Ginocchio models for which we introduce S-, D-, and G-pairs of fermions and subsequently construct the sdg-boson realizations of the generalized Dyson type. The constructed SO(12) and Sp(10) fermion models are solved beyond the explicit symmetry limits. Phase transitions to rotational structures are obtained, also in situations where there is no underlying SU(3) symmetry.

Boson-fermion mappings for odd systems from supercoherent states

We extend the formalism whereby boson mappings can be derived from generalized coherent states to boson-fermion mappings for systems with an odd number of fermions. This is accomplished by constructing supercoherent states in terms of both complex and Grassmann variables. In addition to a known mapping for the full so(2$N$+1) algebra, we also uncover some other formal mappings, together with mappings relevant to collective subspaces.
