Magnetic helicity signature and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures in the solar wind

In a previous paper, we found that proton temperatures are clearly associated with the proton-scale turbulence in the solar wind, and magnetic helicity signature appears to be an important indicator in the association. Based on 15 years of in situ measurements, the present paper further investigates the magnetic helicity of solar wind turbulence and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures. Results show that the presence of the helicity signature is very common in solar wind turbulence at scales $0.3 \lesssim kρ_p \lesssim 1$, with $k$ being the wavenumber and $ρ_p$ the proton gyroradius. The sign of the helicity is mostly positive, indicating the dominance of right-handed polarization of the turbulence. The helicity magnitude usually increases with $k$ and $β_{{\parallel}p}$ (the proton parallel beta) when $kρ_p$ and $β_{{\parallel}p}$ are less than unity. As helicity magnitude increases, the power index of the energy spectrum becomes more negative, and the proton temperatures $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ rise significantly, where $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ are the perpendicular and parallel temperatures with respect to the background magnetic field. In particular, the rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ is faster than $T_{{\parallel}p}$ when $β_{{\parallel}p} < 1$ is satisfied. The faster rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ with the helicity magnitude may be interpreted as the result of the preferentially perpendicular heating of solar wind protons by kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) turbulence.

Observational evidence for solar wind proton heating by ion-scale turbulence

Based on in-situ measurements by Wind spacecraft from 2005 to 2015, this letter reports for the first time a clearly scale-dependent connection between proton temperatures and the turbulence in the solar wind. A statistical analysis of proton-scale turbulence shows that increasing helicity magnitudes correspond to steeper magnetic energy spectra. In particular, there exists a positive power-law correlation (with a slope $\sim 0.4$) between the proton perpendicular temperature and the turbulent magnetic energy at scales $0.3 \lesssim kρ_p \lesssim 1$, with $k$ being the wavenumber and $ρ_p$ being the proton gyroradius. These findings present evidence of solar wind heating by the proton-scale turbulence. They also provide insight and observational constraint on the physics of turbulent dissipation in the solar wind.

COMET Phase-I Technical Design Report

The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of an aluminium nucleus ($μ-e$ conversion, $μ^- N \to e^- N$); a lepton flavor violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process in the Phase-I experiment is $3.1\times10^{-15}$, or 90 % upper limit of branching ratio of $7\times 10^{-15}$, which is a factor of 100 improvement over the existing limit. The expected number of background events is 0.032. To achieve the target sensitivity and background level, the 3.2 kW 8 GeV proton beam from J-PARC will be used. Two types of detectors, CyDet and StrECAL, will be used for detecting the \mue conversion events, and for measuring the beam-related background events in view of the Phase-II experiment, respectively. Results from simulation on signal and background estimations are also described.

Direct Detection Constraints on Dark Photons with CDEX-10 Experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter ($κ$) with data taken from two ${p}$-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The 90\% confidence level upper limits on $κ$ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (${m_V}$) from 10 to 300 eV/${c^2}$ in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90\% confidence level with ${m_V}$ from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/${c^2}$ are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of ${\rm{κ=1.3 \times 10^{-15}}}$ at ${\rm{m_V=200\ eV/c^2}}$.

Search for Light Weakly-Interacting-Massive-Particle Dark Matter by Annual Modulation Analysis with a Point-Contact Germanium Detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present results on light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) searches with annual modulation (AM) analysis on data from a 1-kg mass $p$-type point-contact germanium detector of the CDEX-1B experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Datasets with a total live time of 3.2 yr within a 4.2 yr span are analyzed with analysis threshold of 250 eVee. Limits on WIMP-nucleus ($χ$-$N$) spin-independent cross sections as function of WIMP mass ($m_χ$) at 90\% confidence level (C.L.) are derived using the dark matter halo model. Within the context of the standard halo model, the 90\% C.L. allowed regions implied by the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT AM-based analysis are excluded at $>$99.99\% and 98\% C.L., respectively. These results correspond to the best sensitivity at $m_χ$$<$6$~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ among WIMP AM measurements to date.

Constraints on Spin-Independent Nucleus Scattering with sub-GeV Weakly Interacting Massive Particle Dark Matter from the CDEX-1B Experiment at the China Jin-Ping Laboratory

We report results on the searches of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with sub-GeV masses ($m_χ$) via WIMP-nucleus spin-independent scattering with Migdal effect incorporated. Analysis on time-integrated (TI) and annual modulation (AM) effects on CDEX-1B data are performed, with 737.1 kg$\cdot$day exposure and 160 eVee threshold for TI analysis, and 1107.5 kg$\cdot$day exposure and 250 eVee threshold for AM analysis. The sensitive windows in $m_χ$ are expanded by an order of magnitude to lower DM masses with Migdal effect incorporated. New limits on $σ_{χN}^{\rm SI}$ at 90\% confidence level are derived as $2\times$10$^{-32}\sim7\times$10$^{-35}$ $\rm cm^2$ for TI analysis at $m_χ\sim$ 50$-$180 MeV/$c^2$, and $3\times$10$^{-32}\sim9\times$10$^{-38}$ $\rm cm^2$ for AM analysis at $m_χ\sim$75 MeV/$c^2-$3.0 GeV/$c^2$.

Effects of alpha-proton differential flow on proton temperature anisotropy instabilities in the solar wind: Wind observations

Plasma kinetic waves and alpha-proton differential flow are two important subjects on the topic of evolution of the solar wind. Based on the Wind data during 2005-2015, this paper reports that the occurrence of electromagnetic cyclotron waves (ECWs) near the proton cyclotron frequency significantly depends on the direction of alpha-proton differential flow Vd. As Vd rotates from anti-Sunward direction to Sunward direction, the occurrence rate of ECWs as well as the percentage of left-handed (LH) polarized ECWs decreases considerably. In particular, it is shown that the dominant polarization changes from LH polarization to right-handed polarization during the rotation. The investigation on proton and alpha particle parameters ordered by the direction of Vd further illustrates that large kinetic energies of alpha-proton differential flow correspond to high occurrence rates of ECWs. These results are well consistent with theoretical predictions for effects of alpha-proton differential flow on proton temperature anisotropy instabilities.

A new small satellite sunspot triggering recurrent standard- and blowout-coronal jets

In this paper,we report a detailed analysis of recurrent jets originated from a location with emerging, canceling and converging negative magnetic field at the east edge of NOAA active region AR11166 from 2011 March 09 to 10. The event presented several interesting features. First, a satellite sunspot appeared and collided with a pre-existing opposite polarity magnetic field and caused a recurrent solar jet event. Second, the evolution of the jets showed blowout-like nature and standard characteristics. Third, the satellite sunspot exhibited a motion toward southeast of AR11166 and merged with the emerging flux near the opposite polarity sunspot penumbra, which afterward, due to flux convergence and cancellation episodes, caused recurrent jets. Fourth, three of the blowout jets associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), were observed from field of view of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory. Fifth, almost all the blowout jet eruptions were accompanied with flares or with more intense brightening in the jet base region, while almost standard jets did not manifest such obvious feature during eruptions. The most important, the blowout jets were inclined to faster and larger scale than the standard jets. The standard jets instead were inclined to relative longer-lasting. The obvious shearing and twisting motions of the magnetic field may be interpreted as due to the shearing and twisting motions for a blowout jet eruption. From the statistical results, about 30% blowout jets directly developed into CMEs. It suggests that the blowout jets and CMEs should have a tight relationship.

Possible cool prominence materials detected within interplanetary small magnetic flux ropes

Previous studies indicate that interplanetary small magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs) are manifestations of microflare-associated small coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and the hot material with high charge states heated by related microflares are found in SMFRs. Ordinary CMEs are frequently associated with prominence eruptions, and cool prominencematerialsare found within some magnetic clouds (MCs). Therefore, the predicted small CMEs may also be frequently associated with small prominence eruptions. In this work, we aim to search for cool prominence materials within SMFRs.We examined all the O5+ and Fe6+ fraction data obtained by the Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft during 1998 to 2008 and found that 13 SMFRs might exhibit low-charge-state signatures of unusual O5+and/or Fe6+abundances.One of the 13 SMFRs also exhibited signatures of high ionic charge states. We also reported a SMFR with highFe6+ fraction, but the values of Fe6+is a little lower than the threshold defining unusualFe6+.However, the SDO/AIA observations confirmed that the progenitor CME of this SMFR is associated with a small eruptive prominence, and the observations also supported the prominence materials were embedded in the CME.These observations are at the edge of the capabilities of ACE/SWICS and it cannot be ruled out that they are solely caused by instrumental effects. If these observations are real, they provide new evidence for the conjecture that SMFRs are small-scale MCs but also imply that the connected small CMEs could be associated with flares and prominence eruptions.

Constraints on millicharged particles with low threshold germanium detectors at Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

Relativistic millicharged particles ($χ_q$) have been proposed in various extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the scenarios where they are produced at nuclear reactor core and via interactions of cosmic-rays with the earth's atmosphere. Millicharged particles could also be candidates for dark matter, and become relativistic through acceleration by supernova explosion shock waves. The atomic ionization cross section of $χ_q$ with matter are derived with the equivalent photon approximation. Smoking-gun signatures with significant enhancement in the differential cross section are identified. New limits on the mass and charge of $χ_q$ are derived, using data taken with a point-contact germanium detector with 500g mass functioning at an energy threshold of 300~eV at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory.

A blowout jet associated with one obvious extreme-ultraviolet wave and one complicated coronal mass ejection event

In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of a coronal blowout jet eruption which was associated with an obvious extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wave and one complicated coronal mass ejection (CME) event based on the multi-wavelength and multi-view-angle observations from {\sl Solar Dynamics Observatory} and {\sl Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory}. It is found that the triggering of the blowout jet was due to the emergence and cancellation of magnetic fluxes on the photosphere. During the rising stage of the jet, the EUV wave appeared just ahead of the jet top, lasting about 4 minutes and at a speed of 458 - \speed{762}. In addition, obvious dark material is observed along the EUV jet body, which confirms the observation of a mini-filament eruption at the jet base in the chromosphere. Interestingly, two distinct but overlapped CME structures can be observed in corona together with the eruption of the blowout jet. One is in narrow jet-shape, while the other one is in bubble-shape. The jet-shaped component was unambiguously related with the outwardly running jet itself, while the bubble-like one might either be produced due to the reconstruction of the high coronal fields or by the internal reconnection during the mini-filament ejection according to the double-CME blowout jet model firstly proposed by Shen et al. (2012b), suggesting more observational evidence should be supplied to clear the current ambiguity based on large samples of blowout jets in future studies.

A Quasi-periodic propagating wave and EUV waves excited simultaneously in a solar eruption event

Quasi-periodic fast-propagating (QFP) magnetosonic waves and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) waves were proposed to be driven by solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), respectively. In this Letter, we present a detailed analysis of an interesting event in which we find that both QFP magnetosonic waves and EUV waves are excited simultaneously in one solar eruption event. The co-existence of the two wave phenomena offers an excellent opportunity to explore their driving mechanisms. The QFP waves propagate in a funnel-like loop system with a speed of 682--837 \speed{} and a lifetime of 2 minutes. On the contrary, the EUV waves, which present a faster component and a slower component, propagate in a wide angular extent, experiencing reflection and refraction across a magnetic quasi-separatrix layer. The faster component of the EUV waves travels with a speed of 412--1287 \speed{}, whereas the slower component travels with a speed of 246--390 \speed{}. The lifetime of the EUV waves is $\sim$15 minutes. It is revealed that the faster component of the EUV waves is cospatial with the first wavefront of the QFP wave train. Besides, The QFP waves have a period of about 45$\pm$5 seconds, which is absent in the associated flares. All these results imply that QFP waves can also be excited by mass ejections, including CMEs or jets.

HFLAV input to the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The Heavy Flavor Averaging Group provides with this document input to the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Research in heavy-flavor physics is an essential component of the particle-physics program, both within and beyond the Standard Model. To fully realize the potential of the field, we believe the strategy should include strong support for the ongoing experimental and theoretical heavy-flavor research, future upgrades of existing facilities, and significant heavy-flavor capabilities at future colliders, including dedicated experiments.

Performances of a prototype point-contact germanium detector immersed in liquid nitrogen for light dark matter search

The CDEX-10 experiment searches for light weakly-interacting massive particles, a form of dark matter, at the China JinPing underground laboratory, where approximately 10 kg of germanium detectors are arranged in an array and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Herein, we report on the experimental apparatus, detector characterization, and spectrum analysis of one prototype detector. Owing to the higher rise-time resolution of the CDEX-10 prototype detector as compared with CDEX-1B, we identified the origin of an observed category of extremely fast events. For data analysis of the CDEX-10 prototype, we introduced and applied an improved bulk/surface event discrimination method. The results of the new method were compared to those of the CDEX-1B spectrum. Both sets of results showed good consistency in the 0--12 keVee energy range, except for the 8.0 keV K-shell X-ray peak from the external copper.

Neutron background measurements with a hybrid neutron detector at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

We report in situ neutron background measurements at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory (KSNL) by a hybrid neutron detector (HND) with a data size of 33.8 days under identical shielding configurations as during the neutrino physics data taking. The HND consists of BC-501A liquid and BC-702 phosphor powder scintillation neutron detectors, which is sensitive to both fast and thermal neutrons, respectively. Neutron-induced events for the two channels are identified and differentiated by pulse shape analysis, such that background of both are simultaneously measured. The fast neutron fluxes are derived by an iterative unfolding algorithm. Neutron induced background in the germanium detector under the same fluxes, both due to cosmic-rays and ambient radioactivity, are derived and compared with the measurements. The results are valuable to background understanding of the neutrino data at the KSNL. In particular, neutron-induced background events due to ambient radioactivity as well as from reactor operation are negligible compared to intrinsic cosmogenic activity and ambient $γ$-activity. The detector concept and analysis procedures are applicable to neutron background characterization in similar rare-event experiments.

Bulk and Surface Event Identification in p-type Germanium Detectors

The p-type point-contact germanium detectors have been adopted for light dark matter WIMP searches and the studies of low energy neutrino physics. These detectors exhibit anomalous behavior to events located at the surface layer. The previous spectral shape method to identify these surface events from the bulk signals relies on spectral shape assumptions and the use of external calibration sources. We report an improved method in separating them by taking the ratios among different categories of in situ event samples as calibration sources. Data from CDEX-1 and TEXONO experiments are re-examined using the ratio method. Results are shown to be consistent with the spectral shape method.
