Photometry and physical characterization of near-Earth asteroid 2025 FA22 from one apparition

We present comprehensive photometric characterisation of 2025 FA$_{22}$, a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) discovered on 29 March 2025 and observed during the seventh International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) coordinated campaign. The asteroid's close approach at 2 lunar distances on 18 September 2025 provided an opportunity for rapid physical characterisation in a simulated virtual impactor scenario. Photometric observations were conducted from 17 September to 1 October 2025, during which 2025 FA$_{22}$ traversed a $150^{\circ}$ arc and spanned solar phase angles from $\sim20^{\circ}$ to $\sim70^{\circ}$. This geometry enabled detailed physical characterisation, including determination of the spin axis and shape. Convex inversion yields a sidereal rotation period of $P_{\mathrm{sid}} = 13.07366 \pm 0.00076$ h and a spin axis at ecliptic coordinates $(λ, β) = (246^{\circ} \pm 9^{\circ}, 60^{\circ} \pm 9^{\circ})$. The absolute magnitude was derived as $H_{\mathrm{V}} = 21.39^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ mag ($G_1 = 0.8228$, $G_2 = 0.0194$), with colour indices $B-V = 0.71 \pm 0.05$ mag, $V-R = 0.39 \pm 0.03$ mag, and $R-I = 0.39 \pm 0.04$ mag, consistent with X-complex classification in the Bus--DeMeo taxonomy. Assuming a geometric albedo of $p_v = 0.15^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$, representative of the moderate-albedo X-complex asteroids, we estimate $D_{\mathrm{eff}} = 181^{+31}_{-25}$ m, consistent with "China Compound Eye" radar dimensions of ${\sim}100 \times 320$ m ($D_{\mathrm{eff}} \sim 186$ m), which also reveal a contact-binary morphology consistent with the axis ratios $a:b:c \sim 2.68:1.96:1.00$ derived from our photometric shape model. The bilobate morphology is consistent with YORP-driven spin-up and deformation during a previous YORP cycle, with the current slow rotation possibly explained by internal reconfiguration or tidal braking during close Earth encounters.

Ultrafast optical observation of spin-pumping induced dynamic exchange coupling in ferromagnetic semiconductor/metal bilayer

Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE). Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.

Ultrafast enhancement of interfacial exchange coupling in ferromagnetic bilayer

Fast spin manipulation in magnetic heterostructures, where magnetic interactions between different materials often define the functionality of devices, is a key issue in the development of ultrafast spintronics. Although recently developed optical approaches such as ultrafast spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques open new pathways to fast spin manipulation, these processes do not fully utilize the unique possibilities offered by interfacial magnetic coupling effects in ferromagnetic multilayer systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast photo-enhanced interfacial exchange interactions in the ferromagnetic Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As system at low laser fluence levels. The excitation efficiency of Co$_2$FeAl with the (Ga,Mn)As layer is 30-40 times higher than the case with the GaAs layer at 5 K due to a photo-enhanced exchange coupling interaction via photoexcited charge transfer between the two ferromagnetic layers. In addition, the coherent spin precessions persist to room temperature, excluding the drive of photo-enhanced magnetization in the (Ga,Mn)As layer and indicating a proximity-effect-related optical excitation mechanism. The results highlight the importance of considering the range of interfacial exchange interactions in ferromagnetic heterostructures and how these magnetic coupling effects can be utilized for ultrafast, low-power spin manipulation.

Production of ultra-low radioactivity NaI(Tl) crystals for Dark Matter detectors

Scintillating NaI(Tl) crystals are widely used in a large variety of experimental applications. However, for the use as Dark Matter (DM) detectors, such crystals demand a high level of radio-purity, not achievable by means of standard industrial techniques. One of the main difficulties comes from the presence of potassium that always accompanies sodium in alkali halides. On the other hand, the arguable DM detection by DAMA experiment using NaI(Tl) scintillating crystals requires a reliable verification able to either confirm the existence of DM or rule out the DAMA claim. Ultra-low radioactivity NaI(Tl) crystals, particularly with very low potassium content, are therefore indispensable to overcome the current stalemate in Dark Matter searches. Nonetheless, apart from DAMA-LIBRA experiments, to date, no other experiment has succeeded in building a detector from NaI(Tl) crystals with potassium content of ppb level. This work describes recent results in the preparation of ultra-radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals using a modified Bridgman method. A double-walled platinum crucible technique has been designed and reliability tests show that 5 ppb of potassium in the NaI(Tl) crystals of 2 and 3 inches in diameter can be achieved starting from NaI powder with potassium content of the order of 10 ppb. The potassium excess is segregated in the tail-side of the as grown ingot where measured potassium concentration is above 20 ppb. The purifying effect of Bridgman growth for larger NaI(Tl) crystals is currently being tested. The work also reports on scintillation parameters of our NaI(Tl) crystals measured in a dedicated setup conceived for naked, hygroscopic crystals. The reproducible and reliable production of ultra-low radioactivity NaI(Tl) crystals reported in this work will hopefully spur the construction of new DM search experiments and, anyway, clarify the controversial DAMA-LIBRA results.

Scaling of intrinsic Gilbert damping with spin-orbital coupling strength

We have experimentally and theoretically investigated the dependence of the intrinsic Gilbert damping parameter $α_0$ on the spin-orbital coupling strength $ξ$ by using L1$_{\mathrm{0}}$ ordered FePd$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$Pt$_{\mathrm{x}}$ ternary alloy films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. With the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect, $α_0$ is found to increase by more than a factor of ten when $x$ varies from 0 to 1.0. Since changes of other leading parameters are found to be neglected, the $α_0$ has for the first time been proven to be proportional to $ξ^2$.

Viscous spin exchange torque on precessional magnetization in $(\mathrm{LaMnO}_3)_{2n}/(\mathrm{SrMnO}_3)_{n}$ superlattices

Photoinduced magnetization dynamics is investigated in chemically ordered $(\mathrm{LaMnO}_3)_{2n}/(\mathrm{SrMnO}_3)_n$ superlattices using the time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect. A monotonic frequency-field dependence is observed for the $n=1$ superlattice, indicating a single spin population consistent with a homogeneous hole distribution. In contrast, for $n\geq2$ superlattices, a large precession frequency is observed at low fields indicating the presence of an exchange torque in the dynamic regime. We propose a model that ascribes the emergence of exchange torque to the coupling between two spin populations -- viscous and fast spins.

Quasiparticle Relaxation Dynamics in Two Distinct Gap Structures: La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and LaMnO$_{3}$

The spin and quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and LaMnO$_{3}$ single crystals and thin films is investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by pump-probe spectroscopy. The unusually slow spin-lattice relaxation dynamics is governed by the temperature- and magnetic field- dependent pseudogap in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$, and by the temperature-independent Jahn-Teller gap in LaMnO$_{3}$. Our results show that the coupled dynamics of charge, spin and lattice is strongly correlated with the distinct gap structures in these manganites.
