Gamma-ray production cross sections in proton interactions with natMg, natSi and 56Fe targets: measurement over the energy range of $E_p = 66$-125 MeV, data analysis, results and discussion. Astrophysical implications

We have measured nuclear gamma-ray line production cross sections in interactions of highly accelerated proton beams with various target nuclei abundant in astrophysical sites. The experiments were carried out at the 200-MV Separated Sector Cyclotron (SSC) of iThemba LABS (near Cape Town, in South Africa) using a high-energy resolution and high efficiency detection system for registering the emitted gamma-ray photons. We report and discuss in this paper the collected experimental data sets for various gamma-ray lines produced in bombarding natMg, natSi and 56Fe targets with proton beams of incident energies of Ep = 66, 80, 95, 110 and 125 MeV. After describing the experimental set up and the data analysis method used, we report and discuss our total experimental cross section results in comparisons to previous counterparts from the literature, to a semi-empirical compilation and to the predictions of nuclear reaction theory via performed TALYS code calculations. Significantly improved agreements between theory and experiment are point out when using our modified optical model potential and Bêta (lambda) level deformation parameters instead of the default input parameters built in TALYS. Finally, we put into perspective the applications of our results in nuclear physics and astrophysics with drawing relevant conclusions. gammaKeywords: Proton-induced nuclear reactions; gamma-ray production cross sections; gamma-ray spectrometry; gamma-ray spectroscopy; Astrophysical implications

Gamma-ray emission in proton-induced nuclear reactions on natC and Mylar targets over the incident energy range of Ep = 30-200 MeV. Astrophysical implications

We have measured the gamma-ray line production cross sections in proton-induced nuclear reactions on various target nuclei abundant in astrophysical sites over the incident energy range of Ep = 30 - 200 MeV. We carried out experimental campaigns in joint collaboration at the K = 200 cyclotron of iThemba LABS using a high-energy resolution, high-efficiency detection array composed of 8 Compton-suppressed clover detectors comprising 32 HP-Ge crystals for recording the gamma-ray spectra. In the current paper, we focus on de-excitation lines produced in proton irradiations of natC and Mylar targets. In particular, on the prominent 4.439 and 6.129 MeV lines of $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O which are among the strongest lines emitted in solar flares and in interactions of low-energy cosmic rays with the gas and dust of the inner galaxy. We report new gamma-ray production experimental cross section data for ten nuclear lines that we compare to previous low-energy data sets from the literature, to the predictions of the TALYS code of modern nuclear reactions and to a semi-empirical compilation. In first approach, performing calculations with default input parameters of TALYS we observed substantial deviations between the predicted cross sections and experimental data. Then, using modified optical model potential and nuclear level deformation parameters as input data we generated theoretical excitation functions for the above two main lines fully consistent with experimental data. In contrast, the experimental data sets for the other eight analyzed lines from the two proton-irradiated targets exhibit significant deviations with the predicted cross section values. We also report line-shape experimental data for the line complex observed at $E_g$ = 4.44 MeV in irradiations of the two targets. Finally, we emphasize the astrophysical implications of our results.

Deexcitation nuclear gamma-ray line emission from low-energy cosmic rays in the inner Galaxy

Recent observations of high ionization rates of molecular hydrogen in diffuse interstellar clouds point to a distinct low-energy cosmic-ray component. Supposing that this component is made of nuclei, two models for the origin of such particles are explored and low-energy cosmic-ray spectra are calculated which, added to the standard cosmic ray spectra, produce the observed ionization rates. The clearest evidence of the presence of such low-energy nuclei between a few MeV per nucleon and several hundred MeV per nucleon in the interstellar medium would be a detection of nuclear γ-ray line emission in the range E_ 0.1 - 10 MeV, which is strongly produced in their collisions with the interstellar gas and dust. Using a recent γ-ray cross section compilation for nuclear collisions, γ-ray line emission spectra are calculated alongside with the high-energy γ-ray emission due to π 0 decay, the latter providing normalization of the absolute fluxes by comparison with Fermi-LAT observations of the diffuse emission above E γ= 0.1 GeV. Our predicted fluxes of strong nuclear γ-ray lines from the inner Galaxy are well below the detection sensitivies of INTEGRAL, but a detection, especially of the 4.4-MeV line, seems possible with new-generation γ-ray telescopes based on available technology. We predict also strong γ-ray continuum emission in the 1-8 MeV range, which in a large part of our model space for low-energy cosmic rays exceeds considerably estimated instrument sensitivities of future telescopes.

Measurements of nuclear $γ$-ray line emission in interactions of protons and $α$ particles with N, O, Ne and Si

$γ$-ray production cross sections have been measured in proton irradiations of N, Ne and Si and $α$-particle irradiations of N and Ne. In the same experiment we extracted also line shapes for strong $γ$-ray lines of $^{16}$O produced in proton and $α$-particle irradiations of O. For the measurements gas targets were used for N, O and Ne and a thick foil was used for Si. All targets were of natural isotopic composition. Beams in the energy range up to 26 MeV for protons and 39 MeV for $α$-particles have been delivered by the IPN-Orsay tandem accelerator. The $γ$ rays have been detected with four HP-Ge detectors in the angular range 30$^{\circ}$ to 135$^{\circ}$. We extracted 36 cross section excitation functions for proton reactions and 14 for $α$-particle reactions. For the majority of the excitation functions no other data exist to our knowledge. Where comparison with existing data was possible usually a very good agreement was found. It is shown that these data are very interesting for constraining nuclear reaction models. In particular the agreement of cross section calculations in the nuclear reaction code TALYS with the measured data could be improved by adjusting the coupling schemes of collective levels in the target nuclei $^{14}$N, $^{20,22}$Ne and $^{28}$Si. The importance of these results for the modeling of nuclear $γ$-ray line emission in astrophysical sites is discussed.
