Effect of Zn and Ni impurities on the quasiparticle renormalization in Bi-2212

The Cu substitution by Zn and Ni impurities and its influence on the mass renormalization effects in angle resolved photoelectron spectra (ARPES) of Bi-2212 is addressed. We show that the nonmagnetic Zn atoms have much stronger effect both in nodal and antinodal parts of the Brillouin zone than magnetic Ni. The observed changes are consistent with the behaviour of the spin resonance mode as seen by inelastic neutron scattering in YBCO. This strongly suggests that the "peak-dip-hump" and the "kink" in ARPES on the one side and neutron resonance on the other are closely related features.

Three Dimensional Spin Web: A New Magnetic Lattice in Cu3TeO6

We report on magnetic properties of cubic compound Cu3TeO6 studied by $ac$ and $dc$ susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction for the first time. A novel magnetic lattice, three dimensional spin web, composed of almost planar regular hexagons of Cu2+, S =1/2 spins, defines the properties of Cu3TeO6. The behavior of the magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic state at approximately 170 K is suggestive for a competition between local anisotropies of Cu2+ hexagons. The resulting frustration is weaker than the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction which leads to a collinear (or slightly canted) spin arrangement (k=0,0,0) and formation of magnetic domains below TN=61 K.

Parity of the Pairing Bosons in a High-Temperature Superconductor

We report the observation of a novel effect in the bilayer Pb-Bi2212 high-TC superconductor by means of angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized excitation. Different scattering rates, determined as a function of energy separately for the bonding and antibonding copper-oxygen bands, strongly imply that the dominating scattering channel is odd with respect to layer exchange within a bilayer. This is inconsistent with a phonon-mediated scattering and favours the participation of the odd collective spin excitations in the scattering mechanism in near-nodal regions of the k-space, suggesting a magnetic nature of the pairing mediator.

Infrared signature of the charge-density-wave gap in $ZrTe_3$

The chain-like $ZrTe_3$ compound undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition at $T_{CDW}=63$ $K$, most strongly affecting the conductivity perpendicular to the chains. We measure the temperature ($T$) dependence of the optical reflectivity from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet with polarized light. The CDW gap $Δ(T)$ along the direction perpendicular to the chains is compatible for $T<T_{CDW}$ with the behavior of an order parameter within the mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. $Δ(T)$ also persists well above $T_{CDW}$, which emphasizes the role played by fluctuation effects.

Incommensurate magnetism in the coupled spin tetrahedra system Cu2Te2O5Cl2

Neutron scattering studies on powder and single crystals have provided new evidences for unconventional magnetism in Cu2Te2O5Cl2. The compound is built from tetrahedral clusters of S=1/2 Cu2+ spins located on a tetragonal lattice. Magnetic ordering, emerging at TN=18.2 K, leads to a very complex multi-domain, most likely degenerate, ground state, which is characterized by an incommensurate (ICM) wave vector k ~ [0.15, 0.42,1/2]. The Cu2+ ions carry a magnetic moment of 0.67(1) mB/ Cu2+ at 1.5 K and form a four helices spin arrangement with two canted pairs within the tetrahedra. A domain redistribution is observed when a magnetic field is applied in the tetragonal plane (Hc≈0.5 T), but not for H||c up to 4 T. The excitation spectrum is characterized by two well-defined modes, one completely dispersionless at 6.0 meV, the other strongly dispersing to a gap of 2 meV. The reason for such complex ground state and spin excitations may be geometrical frustration of the Cu2+ spins within the tetrahedra, intra- and inter-tetrahedral couplings having similar strengths and strong Dzyaloshinski-Moriya anisotropy. Candidates for the dominant intra- and inter-tetrahedral interactions are proposed.

Experimental Electronic Structure and Interband Nesting in BaVS_3

The correlated 3d sulphide BaVS_3 is a most interesting compound because of the apparent coexistence of one-dimensional and three-dimensional properties. Our experiments explain this puzzle and shed new light on its electronic structure. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements in a 4eV wide range below the Fermi level explored the coexistence of weakly correlated a_1g wide-band and strongly correlated e_g narrow-band d-electrons that is responsible for the complicated behavior of this material. The most relevant result is the evidence for a_1g--e_g inter-band nesting condition.

Bare electron dispersion from photoemission experiments

Performing an in-depth analysis of the photoemission spectra along the nodal direction of the high temperature superconductor Bi-2212 we have developed a procedure to determine the underlying electronic structure and established a precise relation of the measured quantities to the real and imaginary parts of the self-energy of electronic excitations. The self-consistency of the procedure with respect to the Kramers-Kronig transformation allows us to draw conclusions on the applicability of the spectral function analysis and on the existence of well defined quasiparticles along the nodal direction even for the underdoped Bi-2212 in the pseudogap state.

Doping dependence of the many-body effects along the nodal direction in the high-Tc cuprate (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the doping dependence of the lifetime and the mass renormalization of the low energy excitations in the high-Tc cuprate (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 along the zone diagonal. We find a linear energy de-pendence of the scattering rate for the underdoped samples and a quadratic energy depend-ence in the overdoped case. The mass enhancement of the quasiparticles due to the many body effects at the Fermi energy is found to be in the order of 2 and the renormalization extends over a large energy range for both the normal and the superconducting state. The much discussed kink in the dispersion around 70 meV is interpreted as a small additional effect at low temperatures.

Origin of the shadow Fermi surface in Bi-based cuprates

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the shadow Fermi surface in one layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta and two layer (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find the shadow band to have the same peakwidth and dispersion as the main band. In addition, the shadow band/main band intensity ratio is found to be binding energy independent. Consequently, it is concluded that the shadow bands in Bi-based HTSC do not originate from antiferromagnetic interactions but have a structural origin.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in $Cu_2 Te_2 O_5 X_2$ (X=Cl,Br) studied by neutron diffraction

We present the results of the first neutron powder and single crystal diffraction studies of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems ${\CuTeX}$ (X=Cl, Br). Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vectors ${\bf{k}_{Cl}}\approx[0.150,0.422,\half]$, ${\bf{k}_{Br}}\approx[0.158,0.354,\half]$ sets in below $T_{N}$=18 K for X=Cl and 11 K for X=Br. No simple collinear antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic arrangements of moments within Cu${}^{2+}$ tetrahedra fit these observations. Fitting the diffraction data to more complex but physically reasonable models with multiple helices leads to a moment of 0.67(1)$μ_B$/Cu${}^{2+}$ at 1.5 K for the Cl-compound. The reason for such a complex ground state may be geometrical frustration of the spins due to the intra- and inter-tetrahedral couplings having similar strengths. The magnetic moment in the Br- compound, calculated assuming it has the same magnetic structure as the Cl compound, is only 0.51(5)$μ_B$/Cu${}^{2+}$ at 1.5 K. In neither compound has any evidence for a structural transition accompanying the magnetic ordering been found.

Evidence for CuO conducting band splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with ultimate momentum resolution we have explicitly resolved the bilayer splitting in the nodal direction of Bi-2212. The splitting is observed in a wide doping range and, within the experimental uncertainty, its size does not depend on doping. The value of splitting derived from the experiment is in good agreement with that from band structure calculations which implies the absence of any electronic confinement to single planes within bilayers of Bi-2212. Other consequences of this finding are also discussed.

Optical evidence for the proximity to a spin-density-wave metallic state in Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$

We present the optical properties of \na single crystals, measured over a broad spectral range as a function of temperature ($T$). The capability to cover the energy range from the far-infrared up to the ultraviolet allows us to perform reliable Kramers-Kronig transformation, in order to obtain the absorption spectrum (i.e., the complex optical conductivity). To the complex optical conductivity we apply the generalized Drude model, extracting the frequency dependence of the scattering rate ($Γ$) and effective mass ($m^*$) of the itinerant charge carriers. We find that $Γ(ω)\sim ω$ at low temperatures and for $ω> T$. This suggests that \na is at the verge of a spin-density-wave metallic phase.

Anomalous Thermal Conductivity Of Single Crystal Cu2Te2O5Cl2

A strong increase of the thermal conductivity is observed at the phase transition (Tc =18.2 K) in Cu2Te2O5Cl2 single crystal. This behavior is compared with that of spin- Peierls system NaV2O5, where similar experimental observation has been found, and the conventional spin-Peierls system CuGeO3, where a modest kink in the thermal conductivity curve has been observed. The strong increase of the thermal conductivity at Tc in Cu2Te2O5Cl2 could be partially attributed to the opening of the energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum evident from the magnetic susceptibility measurements. However, the main reason for the anomaly of the thermal conductivity could be explained by a strong spin-lattice coupling in this system, while in NaV2O5 it is a consequence of a charge ordering.

Ground state order and spin-lattice coupling in tetrahedral spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2

High-resolution ac susceptibility and thermal conductivity measurement on Cu2Te2O5X2(X=Br,Cl) single crystals are reported. For Br-sample, sample dependence prevents to distinguish between possibilities of magnetically ordered and spin-singlet ground states. In Cl-sample a three-dimensional transition at 18.5 K is accompanied by almost isotropic behavior of susceptibility and almost switching behavior of thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity studies suggest the presence of a tremendous spin-lattice coupling characterizing Cl- but not Br-sample. Below the transition Cl-sample is in a complex magnetic state involving AF order but also the elements consistent with the presence of a gap in the excitation spectrum.

Manifestation of the magnetic resonance mode in the nodal quasiparticle lifetime in superconducting cuprates

Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.

Angle-resolved photoemission using the circularly polarized light in Pb-Bi2212

In a recent preprint Campuzano et al.(cond-mat/0309402), have questioned the validity of our ARPES results (cond-mat/0305179) contradicting the interpretation of earlier photoemission experiments in terms of the time-reversal symmetry breaking in Bi2212. Here we highlight the principal results of our study and refute all the criticism.

Quasi-Particle Spectra, Charge-Density-Wave, Superconductivity and Electron-Phonon Coupling in 2H-NbSe2

High-resolution photoemission has been used to study the electronic structure of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconducting (SC) dichalcogenide, 2H- NbSe2. From the extracted self-energies, important components of the quasiparticle (QP) interactions have been identified. In contrast to previously studied TaSe2, the CDW transition does not affect the electronic properties significantly. The electron-phonon coupling is identified as a dominant contribution to the QP self-energy and is shown to be very anisotropic (k-dependent) and much stronger than in TaSe2.

Circular dichroism and bilayer splitting in the normal state of underdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$(Ca$_x$Y$_{1-x}$)Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and overdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report an ARPES investigation of the circular dichroism in the first Brillouin zone (BZ) of under- and overdoped Pb-Bi2212 samples. We show that the dichroism has opposite signs for bonding and antibonding components of the bilayer-split CuO-band and is antisymmetric with respect to reflections in both mirror planes parallel to the c-axis. Using this property of the energy and momentum intensity distributions we prove the existence of the bilayer splitting in the normal state of the underdoped compound and compare its value with the splitting in overdoped sample. In agreement with previous studies the magnitude of the interlayer coupling does not depend significantly on doping. We also discuss possible origins of the observed dichroism.
