Electric-field control of the skyrmion lattice in Cu2OSeO3

Small-angle neutron scattering has been employed to study the influence of applied electric (E-) fields on the skyrmion lattice in the chiral lattice magnetoelectric Cu2OSeO3. In an experimental geometry with the E-field parallel to the [111] axis, and the magnetic field parallel to the [1-10] axis, we demonstrate that the effect of applying an E-field is to controllably rotate the skyrmion lattice around the magnetic field axis. Our results are an important first demonstration for a microscopic coupling between applied E-fields and the skyrmions in an insulator, and show that the general emergent properties of skyrmions may be tailored according to the properties of the host system.

Plasmon Evolution and Charge-Density Wave Suppression in Potassium Intercalated Tantalum Diselenide

We have investigated the influence of potassium intercalation on the formation of the charge-density wave (CDW) instability in 2H-tantalum diselenide by means of Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy and density functional theory. Our observations are consistent with a filling of the conduction band as indicated by a substantial decrease of the plasma frequency in experiment and theory. In addition, elastic scattering clearly points to a destruction of the CDW upon intercalation as can be seen by a vanishing of the corresponding superstructures. This is accompanied by a new superstructure, which can be attributed to the intercalated potassium. Based on the behavior of the c-axis upon intercalation we argue in favor of interlayer-sites for the alkali-metal and that the lattice remains in the 2H-modification.

Infrared phonon anomaly and magnetic excitations in single-crystal Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl

Infrared reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on single crystals of Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl. The complex dielectric function and optical properties along all three principal axes of the orthorhombic cell were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lorentz model. Below 115 K, 16 additional modes (8(E$\parallel\hat{a}$)+6(E$\parallel\hat{b}$)+2(E$\parallel\hat{c}$)) appear in the phonon spectra; however, powder x-ray diffraction measurements do not detect a new structure at 85 K. Potential explanations for the new phonon modes are discussed. Transmission in the far infrared as a function of temperature has revealed magnetic excitations originating below the magnetic ordering temperature ($T_{c}\sim$24 K). The origin of the excitations in the magnetically ordered state will be discussed in terms of their response to different polarizations of incident light, behavior in externally-applied magnetic fields, and the anisotropic magnetic properties of Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl as determined by d.c. susceptibility measurements.

Temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy of the Rashba spin-splitting semiconductor BiTeI

We performed temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy measurements on BiTeI single crystals, which exhibit large Rashba spin-splitting. Similar to a previous optical study, we found electronic excitations in good agreement with spin-split electronic bands. In addition, we report a low energy intraband transition with an onset energy of about 40 meV and an unexpectedly large number of vibrational modes in the far-infrared spectral region. At least some of the modes have asymmetric Fano line-shape. These new observations cannot be explained considering only the bulk band structure or crystal symmetry of BiTeI, and we proposed that the optical response is also affected by the surface topology.

Ultrafast dynamics of charge density waves in 4Hb-TaSe2 probed by femtosecond electron diffraction

The dynamics of the photoinduced commensurate to incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in 4Hb-TaSe2 are investigated by femtosecond electron diffraction. In the perturbative regime the CDW reforms on a 150 ps timescale, which is two orders of magnitude slower than in other transition-metal dichalcogenides. We attribute this to a weak coupling between the CDW carrying T-layers and thus demonstrate the importance of three-dimensionality for the existence of CDWs. With increasing optical excitation the phase transition is achieved showing a second order character in contrast to the first order behavior in thermal equilibrium.

Site-selective quantum correlations revealed by magnetic anisotropy in the tetramer system SeCuO3

We present the investigation of a monoclinic compound SeCuO3 using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, torque and electron-spin-resonance (ESR). Structurally based analysis suggests that SeCuO3 can be considered as a 3D network of tetramers. The values of intra-tetramer exchange interactions are extracted from the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and amount to ~200 K. The inter-tetramer coupling leads to the development of long-range antiferromagnetic order at TN = 8 K. An unusual temperature dependence of the effective g-tensors is observed, accompanied with a rotation of macroscopic magnetic axes. We explain this unique observation as due to site-selective quantum correlations.

Multiferroic FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br: Alternating spin chains with frustrated interchain interactions

A combination of density functional theory calculations, many-body model considerations, magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements shows that the multiferroic FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br should be described as a system of alternating antiferromagnetic $S=5/2$ chains with strong Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges weakly coupled by two-dimensional frustrated interactions, rather than the previously reported tetramer models. The peculiar temperature dependence of the incommensurate magnetic vector can be explained in terms of interchain exchange striction being responsible for the emergent net electric polarization.

Two-step transition in a magnetoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3

We report a detailed single crystal investigation of a magnetoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3 using dc magnetization and ac susceptibility along the three principal directions [100], [110] and [111]. We have observed that in small magnetic fields two magnetic transitions occur, one at Tc = 57 K and the second one at TN = 58 K. At Tc the non-linear susceptibility reveals the emergence of the ferromagnetic component and below Tc the magnetization measurements show the splitting between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled regimes. Above 1000 Oe the magnetization saturates and the system is in a single domain state. The temperature dependence of the saturation below Tc can be well described by m(T) = m(0)[1 - (T/Tc)^2]^β, with m(0) = 0.56 (mu)B/Cu, corresponding to the 3-up-1-down configuration. The dielectric constant measured on a thin single crystal shows a systematic deviation below the transition, indicating an intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.

Magneto-Electric Coupling in Single Crystal Cu2OSeO3 Studied by a Novel Electron Spin Resonance Technique

The magneto-electric (ME) coupling on spin-wave resonances in single-crystal Cu2OSeO3 was studied by a novel technique using electron spin resonance combined with electric field modulation. An external electric field E induces a magnetic field component μ_0 H^i = γE along the applied magnetic field H with γ=0.7(1) μT/(V/mm) at 10 K. We found that ME coupling strength γis temperature dependent and highly anisotropic. γ(T) nearly follows that of spin susceptibility J(T) and rapidly decreases above the Curie temperature Tc. The ratio γ/J monotonically decreases with increasing temperature without an anomaly at Tc.

Giant ambipolar Rashba effect in a semiconductor: BiTeI

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in bulk and surface states of the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases it intersects spin-polarized bands, in the corresponding surface depletion and accumulation layers. The momentum splitting of these bands is not affected by adsorbate-induced changes in the surface potential. These findings demonstrate that two properties crucial for enabling semiconductor-based spin electronics -- a large, robust spin splitting and ambipolar conduction -- are present in this material.

Magnetoelectric effects in single crystals of the cubic ferrimagnetic helimagnet Cu2OSeO3

We present magnetodielectric measurements in single crystals of the cubic spin-1/2 compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. A magnetic field-induced electric polarization ($\vec{P}$) and a finite magnetocapacitance (MC) is observed at the onset of the magnetically ordered state ($T_c = 59$ K). Both $\vec{P}$ and MC are explored in considerable detail as a function of temperature (T), applied field $\vec{H}_a$, and relative field orientations with respect to the crystallographic axes. The magnetodielectric data show a number of anomalies which signal magnetic phase transitions, and allow to map out the phase diagram of the system in the $H_a$-T plane. Below the 3up-1down collinear ferrimagnetic phase, we find two additional magnetic phases. We demonstrate that these are related to the field-driven evolution of a long-period helical phase, which is stabilized by the chiral Dzyalozinskii-Moriya term $D \vec{M} \cdot(\bs{\nabla}\times\vec{M})$ that is present in this non-centrosymmetric compound. We also present a phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg theory for the ME$_H$ effect, which is in excellent agreement with experimental data, and shows three novel features: (i) the polarization $\vec{P}$ has a uniform as well as a long-wavelength spatial component that is given by the pitch of the magnetic helices, (ii) the uniform component of $\vec{P}$ points along the vector $(H^yH^z, H^zH^x, H^xH^y)$, and (iii) its strength is proportional to $η_\parallel^2-η_\perp^2/2$, where $η_\parallel$ is the longitudinal and $η_\perp$ is the transverse (and spiraling) component of the magnetic ordering. Hence, the field dependence of P provides a clear signature of the evolution of a conical helix under a magnetic field. A similar phenomenological theory is discussed for the MC.

Long wavelength helimagnetic order and skyrmion lattice phase in Cu2OSeO3

We report a long-wavelength helimagnetic superstructure in bulk samples of the ferrimagnetic insulator Cu2OSeO3. The magnetic phase diagram associated with the helimagnetic modulation inferred from small angle neutron scattering and magnetisation measurements includes a skyrmion lattice phase and is strongly reminiscent of MnSi, FeGe and Fe1-xCoxSi, i.e., binary isostructural siblings of Cu2OSeO3 that order helimagnetically. The temperature dependence of the specific heat of Cu2OSeO3 is characteristic of nearly critical spin fluctuations at the helimagnetic transition. This provides putative evidence for effective spin currents as the origin of enhancements of the magneto-dielectric response instead of atomic displacements considered so far.

Raman study of the Verwey transition in Magnetite at high-pressure and low-temperature; effect of Al doping

We report high-pressure low-temperature Raman studies of the Verwey transition in pure and Al-doped magnetite (Fe_3O_4). The low temperature phase of magnetite displays a number of additional Raman modes that serve as transition markers. These transition markers allow one to investigate the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the Verwey transition temperature. Al-doped magnetite Fe_2.8Al_0.2O_4 (TV=116.5K) displays a nearly linear decrease of the transition temperature with an increase of pressure yielding dP/dT_V = -0.096 GPa/K. In contrast pure magnetite displays a significantly steeper slope of the PT equilibrium line with dP/dT_V = -0.18 GPa/K. The slope of the PT equilibrium lines is related to the changes of the molar entropy and molar volume at the transition. We compare our spectroscopic data with that obtained from the ambient pressure specific heat measurements and find a good agreement in the optimally doped magnetite. Our data indicates that Al doping leads to a smaller entropy change and larger volume expansion at the transition. Our data displays the trends that are consistent with the mean field model of the transition that assumes charge ordering in magnetite.

Anomalously enhanced photoemission from the Dirac point and symmetry of the self-energy variations for the surface states in Bi2Se3

Accurate analysis of the photoemission intensity from the surface states of Bi2Se3 reveals two unusual features: spectral line asymmetry and anomalously enhanced photoemission from the Dirac point. The former indicates a certain symmetry of a scattering process, which results in strongly kω-dependent contribution to the imaginary part of the self-energy that changes sign while crossing both the dispersion curves and the energy of the Dirac point. The latter is hard to describe by one particle spectral function while a final state interference seems to be plausible explanation.

Symmetric and antisymmetric exchange anisotropies in quasi-one-dimensional CuSe$_2$O$_5$ as revealed by ESR

We present an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of single-crystalline spin chain-system CuSe$_2$O$_5$ in the frequency range between 9 GHz and 450 GHz. In a wide temperature range above the Néel temperature $T_N=17$ K we observe strong and anisotropic frequency dependence of a resonance linewidth. Although sizeable interchain interaction $J_{IC}\approx 0.1 J$ ($J$ is the intrachain interaction) is present in this system, the ESR results agree well with the Oshikawa-Affleck theory for one-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This theory is used to extract the anisotropies present in CuSe$_2$O$_5$. We find that the symmetric anisotropic exchange $J_c=(0.04 \pm 0.01) \:J$ and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction $D=(0.05\pm 0.01)\:J$ are very similar in size in this system. Staggered-field susceptibility induced by the presence of the DM interaction is witnessed in the macroscopic susceptibility anisotropy.

Magnetization and specific heat of the dimer system CuTe2O5

We report on magnetization and specific heat measurements on single-crystalline CuTe2O5. The experimental data are directly compared to theoretical results for two different spin structures, namely an alternating spin-chain and a two-dimensional (2D) coupled dimer model, obtained by Das et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 224437 (2008)]. While the analysis of the specific heat does not allow to distinguish between the two models, the magnetization data is in good agreement with the 2D coupled dimer model.

Singlet-triplet excitations and high-field magnetization in CuTe2O5

By measuring the THz electron spin resonance (ESR) transmission spectra and high-field magnetization on the spin-gapped system CuTe$_2$O$_5$, we identified the singlet-triplet excitations in the dimerized non-magnetic ground state. The determined spin-gap value of $hν_0=4.94$ meV at the $Γ$ point ($\mathbf{Q}\simeq\mathbf{0}$) is significantly smaller than the strongest antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Cu ions predicted by theoretical investigations. We also observed the critical field $H_{c1}^{a^*}=37.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\bot$ \emph{bc}-plane and $H_{c1}^{bc}=40.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\|$ \emph{bc}-plane at the onset of non-zero magnetization, consistent with the gap value and corresponding anisotropic \emph{g}-factors determined previously. The observed singlet-triplet excitations in Faraday and Voigt configurations suggest a mixing of the singlet state with the $S_z=0$ triplet state and the $S_z=\pm 1$ triplet states, respectively, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the crystalline \emph{bc}-plane.

BaVS$_3$ probed by V L edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Polarization dependent vanadium L edge X-ray absorption spectra of BaVS$_3$ single crystals are measured in the four phases of the compound. The difference between signals with the polarization \textbf{E}$\perp$\textbf{c} and \textbf{E}$\parallel$\textbf{c} (linear dichroism) changes with temperature. Besides increasing intensity of one of the maxima, a new structure appears in the pre-edge region below the metal-insulator transition. More careful examination brings to light that the changes start already with pretransitional charge density wave fluctuations. Simple symmetry analysis suggests that the effect is related to rearrangements in $E_{g}$ and $A_{1g}$ states, and is compatible with the formation of four inequivalent V sites along the V-S chain.
