Generalized moments and cumulants for samples of fixed multiplicity

Factorial moments and cumulants are usually defined with respect to the unconditioned Poisson process. Conditioning a sample by selecting events of a given overall multiplicity $N$ necessarily introduces correlations. By means of Edgeworth expansions, we derive generalized cumulants which define correlations with respect to an arbitrary process rather than just the Poisson case. The results are applied to correlation measurements at fixed $N$, to redefining short-range vs.\ long-range correlations and to normalization issues.

Dilepton bremsstrahlung from pion-pion scattering in a relativistic OBE model

We have made a detailed and quantitative study of dilepton production via bremsstrahlung of a virtual photon during pion-pion collisions. Most calculations of electromagnetic radiation from strong interaction processes rely on the soft photon approximation (SPA). The conditions underlying this approximation are generally violated when dilepton spectra are calculated in terms of their invariant mass, so that an approach going beyond the SPA becomes necessary. Superseding previous derivations, we derive an exact formula for the bremsstrahlung cross section. The resulting formulation is compared to various forms based on the SPA, the two-particle phase space approximation and Rückl's formula using a relativistic One Boson Exchange (OBE) model. Within the OBE approach, we show that approximations to the bremsstrahlung dilepton cross sections often differ greatly from the exact result; discrepancies become greater both with rising temperature and with invariant mass. Integrated dilepton production rates are overestimated by Rückl-based approximations by factors 1.5--8.0. The largest discrepancies occur for the reaction $π^+π^+ \to π^+π^+\ell^+\ell^-$, where such approximations overestimate the exact rate by factors ranging from 2 to 30 for invariant masses between 10 and 500 MeV. Our findings, combined with recent estimates of the Landau-Pomeranchuk effect, indicate that bremsstrahlung dileptons rates in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions should be even more suppressed than had been thought before.

Unbiased Estimators for Correlation Measurements

Higher order correlation measurements involve multiple event averages which must run over unequal events to avoid statistical bias. We derive correction formulas for small event samples, where the bias is largest, and utilize the results to achieve savings in CPU time consumption for the star integral. Results from a simple model of correlations illustrate the utility and importance of these corrections. Single-event correlation measurements such as in galaxy distributions and envisaged at RHIC must take great care to avoid this unnecessary pitfall.

Effective Field Theory of Multiparticle Correlations

We present an effective field theory of multiparticle correlations based on analogy with Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity. We assume that the field represents particle density fluctuations, and show that in the case of gaussian-type effective action there are no higher-order correlations, in agreement with the recent data. We predict that two-particle correlations have Yukawa form. We also present our results for the two-dimensional and one-dimensional two-particle correlations (i.e. cumulants) as projections of our theory to lower dimensions.

Star Integrals and Unbiased Estimators

We review in brief the development and implementation of the Star integral, a tool yielding measurements of correlations much superior to conventional methods. A version for use in pion interferometry is explained. We also show how effects of non-poissonian overall multiplicity distributions may be eliminated if desired and quote results eliminating statistical biases arising in correlation measurements within small samples.

Integral correlation measures for multiparticle physics

We report on a considerable improvement in the technique of measuring multiparticle correlations via integrals over correlation functions. A modification of measures used in the characterization of chaotic dynamical sytems permits fast and flexible calculation of factorial moments and cumulants as well as their differential versions. Higher order correlation integral measurements even of large multiplicity events such as encountered in heavy ion collisons are now feasible. The change from ``ordinary'' to ``factorial'' powers may have important consequences in other fields such as the study of galaxy correlations and Bose-Einstein interferometry.

Three Dimensional Statistical Field Theory for Density Fluctuations in Heavy-Ion Collsiions

A statistical field theory of particle production is presented using a gaussian functional in three dimensions. Identifying the field with the particle density fluctuation results in zero correlations of order three and higher, while the second order correlation function is of a Yukawa form. A detailed scheme for projecting the theoretical three-dimensional correlation onto data of three and fewer dimensions illustrates how theoretical predictions are tested against experimental moments in the different dimensions. An example given in terms of NA35 parameters should be testable against future NA35 data.
