Studies of Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering with Point-Contact Germanium Detectors at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

The low energy and intense flux of electron anti-neutrinos from nuclear reactors provide the perfect stage to study elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering ($νA_{el}$) in the fully coherent regime. We report results from the TEXONO experiment using electro-cooled $p$-type point-contact Germanium detectors with masses of 523~g and 1434~g at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. We report improved constraints on the $νA_{el}$ cross section with a combined exposure of 404(813.7)~kg-days of Reactor ON(OFF) data at an electron-equivalent threshold of 200~eV$_{ee}$. The Lindhard model, in which the quenching factor is parameterized by a single parameter k, is adopted to describe the suppression of ionization yield. At the benchmark value of k=0.162, a limit of $ρ<$2.0 at 90\% confidence level (CL) is derived, where $ρ$ represents the ratio of the observed to the predicted Standard Model cross section. Moreover the region k$>$0.205 is excluded at 90\% CL using the SM-predicted $νA_{el}$ rate. A bound on the neutrino magnetic moment from $νA_{el}$ at $μ_ν {<} 5.9 \times 10^{-10}~μ_B$ at 90\% CL is also derived.

Dark Matter Annual Modulation Analysis with Combined Nuclear and Electron Recoil Channels

After decades of experimental efforts, the DAMA/LIBRA(DL) annual modulation (AM) analysis on the $χN$ (WIMP Dark Matter interactions on nucleus) channel remains the only one which can be interpreted as positive signatures. This has been refuted by numerous time-integrated (TI) and AM analysis. It has been shown that $χe$ (WIMP interactions with electrons) alone is not compatible with the DL AM data. We expand the investigations by performing an AM analysis with the addition of $χe$ long-range and short-range interactions to $χN$, derived using the Frozen Core Approximation method. Two scenarios are considered, where the $χN$ and $χe$ processes are due to a single $χ$ ($Γ^{1 χ}_{tot}$) or two different $χ$'s ($Γ^{2 χ}_{tot}$). The combined fits with $χN$ and $χe$ provide stronger significance to the DL AM data which are compatible with the presence of additional physical effects beyond $χN$ alone. This is the first analysis which explores how $χe$ AM can play a role in DL AM. The revised allowed regions as well as the exclusion contours from the other null AM experiments are presented. All DL AM allowed parameter spaces in $χN$ and $χe$ channels under both $Γ^{1 χ}_{tot}$ and $Γ^{2 χ}_{tot}$ are excluded at the 90\% confidence level by the combined null AM results. It can be projected that DL-allowed parameter spaces from generic models with interactions induced by two-WIMPs are ruled out.

New Limits on Coherent Neutrino Nucleus Elastic Scattering Cross Section at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

Neutrino nucleus elastic scattering (νAel) with reactor neutrinos is an interaction under full quantum-mechanical coherence. It has not yet been experimentally observed. We present new results on the studies of νAel cross section with an electro-cooled p-type point-contact germanium detector at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino laboratory. A total of (242)357 kg-days of Reactor ON(OFF) data at a detector threshold of 200 eVee in electron equivalent unit are analyzed. The Lindhard model parametrized by a single variable k which characterizes the quenching function was used. Limits at 90% confidence level are derived on the ratio ρ relative to standard model (SM) cross section of ρ<4.7 at the predicted value of k=0.162, while k<0.285 at the SM-value of ρ=1. Prospects on future positive measurements are discussed.

Nonconservative higher-order hydrodynamic modulation instability

The modulation instability (MI) is a universal mechanism that is responsible for the disintegration of weakly nonlinear narrow-banded wave fields and the emergence of localized extreme events in dispersive media. The instability dynamics is naturally triggered, when unstable energy side-bands located around the main energy peak are excited and then follow an exponential growth law. As a consequence of four wave mixing effect, these primary side-bands generate an infinite number of additional side-bands, forming a triangular side-band cascade. After saturation, it is expected that the system experiences a return to initial conditions followed by a spectral recurrence dynamics. Much complex nonlinear wave field motion is expected, when the secondary or successive side-band pair that are created are also located in the finite instability gain range around the main carrier frequency peak. This latter process is referred to as higher-order MI. We report a numerical and experimental study that confirm observation of higher-order MI dynamics in water waves. Furthermore, we show that the presence of weak dissipation may counter-intuitively enhance wave focusing in the second recurrent cycle of wave amplification. The interdisciplinary weakly nonlinear approach in addressing the evolution of unstable nonlinear waves dynamics may find significant resonance in other nonlinear dispersive media in physics, such as optics, solids, superfluids and plasma.

Modulation Instability and Phase-Shifted Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Recurrence

Instabilities are common phenomena frequently observed in nature, sometimes leading to unexpected catastrophes and disasters in seemingly normal conditions. The simplest form of instability in a distributed system is its response to a harmonic modulation. Such instability has special names in various branches of physics and is generally known as modulation instability (MI). The MI is tightly related to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrence since breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) are known to accurately describe growth and decay of modulationally unstable waves in conservative systems. Here, we report theoretical, numerical and experimental evidence of the effect of dissipation on FPU cycles in a super wave tank, namely their shift in a determined order. In showing that ideal NLSE breather solutions can describe such dissipative nonlinear dynamics, our results may impact the interpretation of a wide range of new physics scenarios.

Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu2O2

A complete phase diagram of Zn substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu2O2 has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature (T_h) of the original LiCu2O2 follows finite size scaling for less than ~ 5.5% Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn substitution > 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an intriguing Zn level dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T_c (Zn > 0.055,H). The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor (nn) J1 and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) J2 (alpha=J2/J1) are extracted from high temperature series expansion (HTSE) fitting and N=16 finite chain exact diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of electric polarization in this spin driven multiferroic material.

Temperature-Dependent Anomalies in the Structure of the (001) Surface of LiCu2O2

Surface corrugation functions, derived from elastic helium atom scattering (HAS) diffraction patterns at different temperatures, reveal that the Cu2+ rows in the (001) surface of LiCu2O2 undergo an outward displacement of about 0.15 Å as the surface was cooled down to 140 K. This is probably the first time that isolated one-dimensional magnetic ion arrays were realized, which qualifies the Li1+Cu2+O2-2 surface as a candidate to study one-dimensional magnetism. The rising Cu2+ rows induce a surface incommensurate structural transition along the a-direction. Surface equilibrium analysis showed that the surface Cu2+ ions at bulk-like positions experience a net outward force along the surface normal which is relieved by the displacement. Temperature-dependent changes of the surface phonon dispersions obtained with the aid of inelastic HAS measurements combined with surface lattice dynamical calculations are also reported.

Investigation of the Structural and Dynamical Properties of the (001) Surface of LiCu2O2

We report on studies of the structure and dynamics of the (001)surface of single crystal LiCu2O2, investigated by He beam scattering at room temperature, and with lattice dynamical models. The best fit surface corrugation to measured diffraction patterns shows that the surface termination is exclusively a Li+1Cu+2O-2 plane. Lattice dynamics fits to inelastic He scattering spectra reveal the presence of two low-lying surface phonon modes, identified with the motion of Cu+2, Li+1 surface ions normal to the surface.

Mechanism of recrystallization process in epitaxial GaN under dynamic stress field - Atomistic origin of planar defect formation

The mechanism of recrystallization in epitaxial (1000) GaN film, introduced by indentation technique, is probed by lattice dynamic studies using Raman spectroscopy. The recrystallized region is identified by Micro-Raman area mapping. Pop-in bursts in loading lines indicate nucleation of dislocations and climb of dislocations. These processes set in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field at the center of indentation for the initiation of recrystallization process. A planar defect migration mechanism is evolved. A pivotal role of vacancy migration is pointed out, for the first time, as the rate limiting factor for the dislocation dynamics initiating the recrystallization process in GaN.

Li non-stoichiometry and crystal growth of untwinned 1D quantum spin system Lix Cu2 O2

Floating-zone growth of untwinned single crystal of Li_xCu_2O_2 with high Li content of x ~ 0.99 is reported. Li content of Li_xCu_2O_2 has been determined accurately through combined iodometric titration and thermogravimetric methods, which also ruled out the speculation of chemical disorder between Li and Cu ions. The morphology and physical properties of single crystals obtained from slowing-cooling (SL) and floating-zone (FZ) methods are compared. The floating-zone growth under Ar/O_2=7:1 gas mixture at 0.64 MPa produces large area of untwinned crystal with highest Li content, which has the lowest helimagnetic ordering temperature ~19K in the Li_xCu_2O_2 system.

A complete Raman mapping of phase transitions in Si under indentation

Crystalline Si substrates are studied for pressure induced phase transformation under indentation at room temperature using Berkovich tip. Raman scattering study is used for the identification of the transformed phases. Raman line as well as area mapping are used for locating the phases in the indented region. Calculation of pressure contours in the indented region is used for understanding the phase distribution. We report here a comprehensive study of all the phases of Si, reported so far, leading to possible understanding of material properties useful for possible electromechanical applications. As a major finding, distribution of amorphous phase in the indented region deviates from the conventional wisdom of being in the central region alone. We present phase mapping results for both Si(100) and Si(111) substrates.

Recrystallization of epitaxial GaN under indentation

We report recrystallization of epitaxial (epi-) GaN(0001) film under indentation.Hardness value is measured close to 10 GPa, using a Berkovich indenter. Pop-in burst in the loading line indicates nucleation of dislocations setting in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field for the recrystallization process. Micro-Raman studies are used to identify the recrystallization process. Raman area mapping indicates the crystallized region. Phonon mode corresponding to E2(high) close to 570 cm-1 in the as-grown epi-GaN is redshifted to stress free value close to 567 cm-1 in the indented region. Evolution of A1(TO) and E1(TO) phonon modes are also reported to signify the recrystallization process.
