Coexistence and interaction of spinons and magnons in an antiferromagnet with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic quantum spin chains

In conventional quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets with quantum spins, magnetic excitations are carried by either magnons or spinons in different energy regimes: they do not coexist independently, nor could they interact with each other. In this Letter, by combining inelastic neutron scattering, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Random Phase Approximation calculations, we report the discovery and discuss the physics of the coexistence of magnons and spinons and their interactions in Botallackite-Cu2(OH)3Br. This is a unique quantum antiferromagnet consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 chains with weak inter-chain couplings. Our study presents a new paradigm where one can study the interaction between two different types of magnetic quasiparticles, magnons and spinons.

Three little radio galaxies in the early Universe

Volonteri et al. (2011) found that the number of radio-loud quasars above redshift 4 calculated from the luminosity function (based upon Swift/BAT observations) is much smaller than the number estimated from the known high-redshift beamed sources, blazars, assuming that for every beamed source with a Lorentz factor of $Γ$, statistically $2 Γ^2$ non-beamed sources should exist. To explain the missing misaligned (non-beamed) population of high-redshift sources, they proposed various explanations, involving heavy optical obscuration and significantly different Lorentz factors at early cosmological epochs. Our EVN observations targeting high-redshift ($z>4$) blazar candidates revealed 3 sources not showing relativistic beaming, but rather kpc-scale double structures. These three sources have significant radio emission resolved out with the EVN, while they are compact on $\sim 5-10$ arcsec scale. Our dual-frequency ($1.5$ and $5$ GHz) e-MERLIN observations of these three sources revealed a rich morphology, bending jets, and hot spots with possible sites of interaction between the jets and the surrounding medium at intermediate scales.

Statistical Description of Transport in Multimode Fibers with Mode-Dependent Loss

We analyze coherent wave transport in a new physical setting associated with multimode wave systems where reflection is completely suppressed and mode-dependent losses together with mode-mixing are dictating the wave propagation. An additional physical constraint is the fact that in realistic circumstances the access to the scattering (or transmission) matrix is incomplete. We have addressed all these challenges by providing a statistical description of wave transport which fuses together a free probability theory approach with a Filtered Random Matrix ensemble. Our theoretical predictions have been tested successfully against experimental data of light transport in multimode fibers.

Improving astrophysical parameter estimation via offline noise subtraction for Advanced LIGO

The Advanced LIGO detectors have recently completed their second observation run successfully. The run lasted for approximately 10 months and lead to multiple new discoveries. The sensitivity to gravitational waves was partially limited by correlated noise. Here, we utilize auxiliary sensors that witness these correlated noise sources, and use them for noise subtraction in the time domain data. This noise and line removal is particularly significant for the LIGO Hanford Observatory, where the improvement in sensitivity is greater than 20%. Consequently, we were also able to improve the astrophysical estimation for the location, masses, spins and orbital parameters of the gravitational wave progenitors.

Almost resolvable $k$-cycle systems with $k\equiv 2\pmod 4$

In this paper, we show that if $k\geq 6$ and $k \equiv 2 \pmod 4$, then there exists an almost resolvable $k$-cycle system of order $2kt+1$ for all $t\ge 1$ except possibly for $t=2$ and $k\geq 14$. Thus we give a partial solution to an open problem posed by Lindner, Meszka, and Rosa (J. Combin. Des., vol. 17, pp.404-410, 2009).

Non-existence of perfect binary sequences

Binary sequences with lower autocorrelation values have important applications in cryptography and communications. In this paper, we present all possible parameters for binary periodical sequences with a 2-level autocorrelation values. For $n \equiv 1\pmod 4$, we prove some cases of Schmidt's Conjecture for perfect binary sequences. (Des. Codes Cryptogr. 78 (2016), 237-267.) For $n \equiv 2\pmod 4$, Jungnickel and Pott (Discrete Appl. Math. 95 (1999) 331-359.) left four perfect binary sequences as open problem and we solve three of its. For $n \equiv 3\pmod 4$, we present some nonexistence of binary sequences which all nontrivial autocorrelation values are equal 3. For $n \equiv 0\pmod 4$, we show that there do not exist the binary sequences which all nontrivial autocorrelation values are equal 4.

Identification and mitigation of narrow spectral artifacts that degrade searches for persistent gravitational waves in the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO

Searches are under way in Advanced LIGO and Virgo data for persistent gravitational waves from continuous sources, e.g. rapidly rotating galactic neutron stars, and stochastic sources, e.g. relic gravitational waves from the Big Bang or superposition of distant astrophysical events such as mergers of black holes or neutron stars. These searches can be degraded by the presence of narrow spectral artifacts (lines) due to instrumental or environmental disturbances. We describe a variety of methods used for finding, identifying and mitigating these artifacts, illustrated with particular examples. Results are provided in the form of lists of line artifacts that can safely be treated as non-astrophysical. Such lists are used to improve the efficiencies and sensitivities of continuous and stochastic gravitational wave searches by allowing vetoes of false outliers and permitting data cleaning.

Some results on generalized strong external difference families

A generalized strong external difference family (briefly $(v, m; k_1,\dots,k_m; λ_1,\dots,λ_m)$-GSEDF) was introduced by Paterson and Stinson in 2016. In this paper, we construct some new GSEDFs for $m=2$ and use them to obtain some results on graph decomposition. We also give some nonexistence results for GSEDFs. Especially, we prove that a $(v, 3;k_1,k_2,k_3; λ_1,λ_2,λ_3)$-GSEDF does not exist when $k_1+k_2+k_3< v$.

The Electronics, Trigger and Data Acquisition System for the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber of the DarkSide-50 Search for Dark Matter

The DarkSide-50 experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso is a search for dark matter using a dual phase time projection chamber with 50 kg of low radioactivity argon as target. Light signals from interactions in the argon are detected by a system of 38 photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs), 19 above and 19 below the TPC volume inside the argon cryostat. We describe the electronics which processes the signals from the photo-multipliers, the trigger system which identifies events of interest, and the data-acquisition system which records the data for further analysis. The electronics include resistive voltage dividers on the PMTs, custom pre-amplifiers mounted directly on the PMT voltage dividers in the liquid argon, and custom amplifier/discriminators (at room temperature). After amplification, the PMT signals are digitized in CAEN waveform digitizers, and CAEN logic modules are used to construct the trigger, the data acquisition system for the TPC is based on the Fermilab "artdaq" software. The system has been in operation since early 2014.

Competing spin density wave, collinear, and helical magnetism in Fe1+xTe

The Fe1+xTe phase diagram consists of two distinct magnetic structures with collinear order present at low interstitial iron concentrations and a helical phase at large values of x with these phases separated by a Lifshitz point. We use unpolarized single crystal diffraction to confirm the helical phase for large interstitial iron concentrations and polarized single crystal diffraction to demonstrate the collinear order for the iron deficient side of the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering show that the fluctuations associated with this collinear order are predominately transverse at low energy transfers, consistent with a localized magnetic moment picture. We then apply neutron inelastic scattering and polarization analysis to investigate the dynamics and structure near the boundary between collinear and helical order in the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. We first show that the phase separating collinear and helical order is characterized by a spin-density wave with a single propagation wave vector of (~ 0.45, 0, 0.5). We do not observe harmonics or the presence of a charge density wave. The magnetic fluctuations associated with this wavevector are different from the collinear phase being strongly longitudinal in nature and correlated anisotropically in the (H,K) plane. The excitations preserve the C4 symmetry of the lattice, but display different widths in momentum along the two tetragonal directions at low energy transfers. While the low energy excitations and minimal magnetic phase diagram can be understood in terms of localized interactions, we suggest that the presence of density wave phase implies the importance of electronic and orbital properties.

Some new bounds of placement delivery arrays

Coded caching scheme is a technique which reduce the load during peak traffic times in a wireless network system. Placement delivery array (PDA in short) was first introduced by Yan et al.. It can be used to design coded caching scheme. In this paper, we prove some lower bounds of PDA on the element and some lower bounds of PDA on the column. We also give some constructions for optimal PDA.

Inverse Design of Perfectly Transmitting Eigenchannels in Scattering Media

Light-matter interactions inside turbid medium can be controlled by tailoring the spatial distribution of energy density throughout the system. Wavefront shaping allows selective coupling of incident light to different transmission eigenchannels, producing dramatically different spatial intensity profiles. In contrast to the density of transmission eigenvalues that is dictated by the universal bimodal distribution, the spatial structures of the eigenchannels are not universal and depend on the confinement geometry of the system. Here, we develop and verify a model for the transmission eigenchannel with the corresponding eigenvalue close to unity. By projecting the original problem of two-dimensional diffusion in a homogeneous scattering medium onto a one-dimensional inhomogeneous diffusion, we obtain an analytical expression relating the intensity profile to the shape of the confining waveguide. Inverting this relationship enables the inverse design of the waveguide shape to achieve the desired energy distribution for the perfectly transmitting eigenchannel. Our approach also allows to predict the intensity profile of such channel in a disordered slab with open boundaries, pointing to the possibility of controllable delivery of light to different depths with local illumination.

The Electronics and Data Acquisition System for the DarkSide-50 Veto Detectors

DarkSide-50 is a detector for dark matter candidates in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). It utilizes a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr TPC) for the inner main detector. The TPC is surrounded by a liquid scintillator veto (LSV) and a water Cherenkov veto detector (WCV). The LSV and WCV, both instrumented with PMTs, act as the neutron and cosmogenic muon veto detectors for DarkSide-50. This paper describes the electronics and data acquisition system used for these two detectors.
