Uniquely weakly nil-clean conditions on zero-divisors

An element in a ring $R$ is called uniquely weakly nil-clean if every element in $R$ can be uniquely written as a sum or a difference of a nilpotent and an idempotent in the sense of very idempotents. The structure of the ring in which every zero-divisor is uniquely weakly nil-clean is completely determined. We prove that every zero-divisor in a ring $R$ is uniquely weakly nil-clean if and only if $R$ is a D-ring, or $R$ is abelian, periodic, and $R/J(R)$ is isomorphic to a field $F$, ${\Bbb Z}_{3}\oplus {\Bbb Z}_{3}$, ${\Bbb Z}_{3}\oplus B$ where $B$ is Boolean, or a Boolean ring. As a specific case, rings in which every zero-divisor $a$ or $-a$ is a nilpotent or an idempotent are also considered. Furthermore, we prove that every zero-divisor in a ring $R$ is uniquely nil-clean if and only if $R$ is a D-ring, or $R$ is abelian, periodic; and $R/J(R)$ is Boolean.\vskip3mm \no {\bf Key words}: Zero-divisor; Uniquely weakly nil-clean ring; Uniquely nil-clean ring.

Feckly Adequate Conditions and Elementary Matrix Reduction

We present some new conditions for a B$\acute{e}$zout ring to be an elementary divisor ring. We prove, in this note, that a B$\acute{e}$zout ring $R$ is feckly zero-adequate if and only if $R/J(R)$ is regular if and only if $R/J(R)$ is $π$-regular, and that every feckly zero-adequate ring is an elementary divisor ring. If $R$ has feckly adequate range 1, we prove that $R$ is an elementary divisor ring if and only if $R$ is a B$\acute{e}$zout ring. Many known results are thereby generalized to much wider class of rings, e.g. [4, Theorem 14], [5, Theorem 4], [8, Theorem 1.2.14], [10, Theorem 4] and [11, Theorem 7]. \vskip3mm {\bf Keywords:} Elementary divisor ring, B$\acute{e}$zout ring, Feckly zero-adequate ring, Feckly adequate range 1.

Theory of Transport Phenomena in Coherent Quantum Hall Bilayers

We argue that all anomalous transport properties of coherent quantum quantum Hall bilayers can be understood in terms of a mean-field transport theory in which the condensate phase is nearly uniform across the sample, and the strength of condensate coupling to interlayer tunneling processes is substantially reduced compared to the predictions of disorder-free microscopic mean-field theory. These ingredients provide a natural explanation for recently established I-V characteristics which feature a critical current above which the tunneling resistance abruptly increases and a non-local interaction between interlayer tunneling at the inner and outer edges of Corbino rings. We propose a microscopic picture in which disorder is the main agent responsible for the reduction of the effective interlayer tunneling strength.

Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |Δm_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22θ_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $θ_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

On feckly clean rings

A ring $R$ is feckly clean provided that for any $a\in R$ there exists an element $e\in R$ and a full element $u\in R$ such that $a=e+u, eR(1-e)\subseteq J(R)$. We prove that a ring $R$ is feckly clean if and only if for any $a\in R$, there exists an element $e\in R$ such that $V(a)\subseteq V(e), V(1-a)\subseteq V(1-e)$ and $eR(1-e)\subseteq J(R)$, if and only if for any distinct maximal ideals $M$ and $N$, there exists an element $e\in R$ such that $e\in M, 1-e\in N$ and $eR(1-e)\subseteq J(R)$, if and only if $J$-$spec(R)$ is strongly zero dimensional, if and only if $Max(R)$ is strongly zero dimensional and every prime ideal containing $J(R)$ is contained in a unique maximal ideal. More explicit characterizations are also discussed for commutative feckly clean rings.

Factorizations of Matrices Over Projective-free Rings

An element of a ring $R$ is called strongly $J^{\#}$-clean provided that it can be written as the sum of an idempotent and an element in $J^{\#}(R)$ that commute. We characterize, in this article, the strongly $J^{\#}$-cleanness of matrices over projective-free rings. These extend many known results on strongly clean matrices over commutative local rings.

Very clean matrices over local rings

An element $a\in R$ is very clean provided that there exists an idempotent $e\in R$ such that $ae=ea$ and either $a-e$ or $a+e$ is invertible. A ring $R$ is very clean in case every element in $R$ is very clean. We explore the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a triangular $2\times 2$ matrix ring over local rings is very clean. The very clean $2\times 2$ matrices over commutative local rings are completely determined. Applications to matrices over power series are also obtained.

Pressure Dependent Structural Changes and Predicted Electrical Polarization in Perovskite RMnO3

High pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on RMnO3 (R=Dy, Ho and Lu) reveals that varying structural changes occurs for different R ions. Large lattice changes (orthorhombic strain) occur in DyMnO3 and HoMnO3 while the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains stable. On the other hand, in LuMnO3, Mn-O bond distortions are observed in the region 4-8 GPa with the broad minimum in the JT distortion. High pressure IR measurements indicate that a phonon near 390 cm-1 corresponding to the complex motion of the Mn and O ions changes anomalously for LuMnO3. It softens in the 4-8 GPa region, which is consistent with the structural change in Mn-O bonds and then hardens at high pressures. By contrast, the phonons continuously harden with increasing pressure for DyMnO3 and HoMnO3. DFT calculations show that the E-phase LuMnO3 is the most stable phase up to the 10 GPa pressure examined. Simulations indicate that the distinct structural change under pressure in LuMnO3 can possibly be used to optimize the electric polarization by pressure/strain.

Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber Research and Development in the United States

A workshop was held at Fermilab on March 20-21, 2013 to discuss the development of liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPC) in the United States. The workshop was organized under the auspices of the Coordinating Panel for Advanced Detectors, a body that was initiated by the American Physical Society Division of Particles and Fields. All presentations at the workshop were made in plenary sessions organized into seven topical categories: $i)$ Argon Purity, $ii)$ Cryogenics, $iii)$ TPC and High Voltage, $iv)$ Electronics, Data Acquisition and Triggering, $v)$ Scintillation Light Detection, $vi)$ Calibration and Test Beams, and $vii)$ Software. This document summarizes the current efforts in each of these topical categories. It also highlights areas in LArTPC research and development that are common between neutrino experiments and dark matter experiments.

Systematic study of the symmetry energy coefficient in finite nuclei

The symmetry energy coefficients in finite nuclei have been studied systematically with a covariant density functional theory (DFT) and compared with the values calculated using several available mass tables. Due to the contamination of shell effect, the nuclear symmetry energy coefficients extracted from the binding energies have large fluctuations around the nuclei with double magic numbers. The size of this contamination is shown to be smaller for the nuclei with larger isospin value. After subtracting the shell effect with the Strutinsky method, the obtained nuclear symmetry energy coefficients with different isospin values are shown to decrease smoothly with the mass number $A$ and are subsequently fitted to the relation $\dfrac{4a_{\rm sym}}{A}=\dfrac{b_v}{A}-\dfrac{b_s}{A^{4/3}}$. The resultant volume $b_v$ and surface $b_s$ coefficients from axially deformed covariant DFT calculations are $121.73$ and $197.98$ MeV respectively. The ratio $b_s/b_v=1.63$ is in good agreement with the value derived from the previous calculations with the non-relativistic Skyrme energy functionals. The coefficients $b_v$ and $b_s$ corresponding to several available mass tables are also extracted. It is shown that there is a strong linear correlation between the volume $b_v$ and surface $b_s$ coefficients and the ratios $b_s/b_v$ are in between $1.6-2.0$ for all the cases.

LAr1-ND: Testing Neutrino Anomalies with Multiple LArTPC Detectors at Fermilab

This white paper describes LAr1-ND and the compelling physics it brings first in Phase 1 and next towards the full LAr1 program. In addition, LAr1-ND serves as a key step in the development toward large-scale LArTPC detectors. Its development goals will encompass testing existing and possibly innovative designs for LBNE while at the same time providing a training ground for teams working towards LBNE combining timely neutrino physics with experience in detector development.

The CAPTAIN Detector and Physics Program

The Cryogenic Apparatus for Precision Tests of Argon Interactions with Neutrino (CAP- TAIN) program is designed to make measurements of scientific importance to long-baseline neutrino physics and physics topics that will be explored by large underground detectors. The CAPTAIN detector is a liquid argon TPC deployed in a portable and evacuable cryostat. Five tons of liquid argon are instrumented with a 2,000 channel liquid argon TPC and a photon detection system. Subsequent to the commissioning phase, the detector will collect data in a high-energy neutron beamline that is part of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center to measure cross-sections of spallation products that are backgrounds to measurements of neutrinos from a supernova burst, cross-sections of events that mimic the electron neutrino appearance signal in long-baseline neutrino physics and neutron signatures to constrain neutrino energy reconstruction in LBNE's long-baseline program. Subsequent to the neutron running, the CAPTAIN detector will be moved to a neutrino source. Two possibilities are an on-axis run in the NuMI beamline at FNAL and a run in the neutrino source produced by the SNS. An on-axis run at NuMI produces more than one million events of interest in a two or three year run at neutrino energies between 1 and 10 GeV - complementary to the MicroBooNE experiment, which will measure similar interactions at a lower energy range - 0.5 to 2 GeV. At the SNS the neutrinos result from the decays stopped positively charged pions and muons yielding a broad spectrum up to 50 MeV. If located close to the spallation target, CAPTAIN can detect several thousand events per year in the same neutrino energy regime where neutrinos from a supernova burst are. Measurements at the SNS yield a first measurement of the cross- section of neutrinos on argon in this important energy regime.

On Perfectly Clean Rings

An element $a$ of a ring $R$ is called perfectly clean if there exists an idempotent $e\in comm^2(a)$ such that $a-e\in U(R)$. A ring $R$ is perfectly clean in case every element in $R$ is perfectly clean. In this paper, we investigate conditions on a local ring $R$ that imply that $2\times 2$ matrix rings and triangular matrix rings are perfectly clean. We shall show that for these rings perfect cleanness and strong cleanness coincide with each other, and enhance many known results. We also obtain several criteria for such a triangular matrix ring to be perfectly $J$-clean. For instance, it is proved that for a commutative ring $R$, $T_n(R)$ is perfectly $J$-clean if and only if $R$ is strongly $J$-clean.

Uniquely Strongly Clean Triangular Matrix Rings

A ring $R$ is uniquely (strongly) clean provided that for any $a\in R$ there exists a unique idempotent $e\in R \big(\in comm(a)\big)$ such that $a-e\in U(R)$. Let $R$ be a uniquely bleached ring. We prove, in this note, that $R$ is uniquely clean if and only if $R$ is abelian, and $T_n(R)$ is uniquely strongly clean for all $n\geq 1$, if and only if $R$ is abelian, $T_n(R)$ is uniquely strongly clean for some $n\geq 1$. In the commutative case, the more explicit results are obtained. These also generalize the main theorems in [6] and [7], and provide many new class of such rings.

Strongly Clean Matrices over Commutative Rings

A commutative ring $R$ is projective free provided that every finitely generated $R$-module is free. An element in a ring is strongly clean provided that it is the sum of an idempotent and a unit that commutates. Let $R$ be a projective-free ring, and let $h\in R[t]$ be a monic polynomial of degree $n$. We prove, in this article, that every $φ\in M_n(R)$ with characteristic polynomial $h$ is strongly clean, if and only if the companion matrix $C_h$ of $h$ is strongly clean, if and only if there exists a factorization $h=h_0h_1$ such that $h_0\in {\Bbb S}_0, h_1\in {\Bbb S}_1$ and $(h_0,h_1)=1$. Matrices over power series over projective rings are also discussed. These extend the known results [1, Theorem 12] and [5, Theorem 25].

Strongly clean triangular matrix rings with endomorphisms

A ring $R$ is strongly clean provided that every element in $R$ is the sum of an idempotent and a unit that commutate. Let $T_n(R,σ)$ be the skew triangular matrix ring over a local ring $R$ where $σ$ is an endomorphism of $R$. We show that $T_2(R,σ)$ is strongly clean if and only if for any $a\in 1+J(R), b\in J(R)$, $l_a-r_{σ(b)}: R\to R$ is surjective. Further, $T_3(R,σ)$ is strongly clean if $l_{a}-r_{σ(b)}, l_{a}-r_{σ^2(b)}$ and $l_{b}-r_{σ(a)}$ are surjective for any $a\in U(R),b\in J(R)$. The necessary condition for $T_3(R,σ)$ to be strongly clean is also obtained.

Structure of the hadron-quark mixed phase in protoneutron stars

We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of hot protoneutron stars, combining the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach for hadronic matter with the MIT bag model or the Dyson-Schwinger model for quark matter. We examine the structure of the mixed phase constructed according to different prescriptions for the phase transition, and the resulting consequences for stellar properties. We find important effects for the internal composition, but only very small influence on the global stellar properties.
