Anisotropic superconductivity and magnetism in single-crystal RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$

We investigate the anisotropic superconducting and magnetic properties of single-crystal RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ using magnetotransport and magnetization measurements. We determine a magnetic ordering temperature of the Eu-moments of $T_m$ = 15 K and a superconducting transition temperature of $T_c$ = 36.8 K. The superconducting phase diagram is characterized by high upper critical field slopes of -70 kG/K and -42 kG/K for in-plane and out-of-plane fields, respectively, and a surprisingly low superconducting anisotropy of $Γ$ = 1.7. Ginzburg-Landau parameters of $κ_c \sim 67$ and $κ_{ab} \sim 108$ indicate extreme type-II behavior. These superconducting properties are in line with those commonly seen in optimally doped Fe-based superconductors. In contrast, Eu-magnetism is quasi-two dimensional as evidenced by highly anisotropic in-plane and out-of-plane exchange constants of 0.6 K and $<$ 0.04 K. A consequence of the quasi-2D nature of the Eu-magnetism are strong magnetic fluctuation effects, a large suppression of the magnetic ordering temperature as compared to the Curie-Weiss temperature, and a cusp-like anomaly in the specific heat devoid of any singularity. Magnetization curves reveal a clear magnetic easy-plane anisotropy with in-plane and out-of-plane saturation fields of 2 kG and 4 kG.

Superconducting and normal-state anisotropy of the doped topological insulator Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and the related compounds Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ have attracted considerable interest, as these materials may be realizations of unconventional topological superconductors. Superconductivity with T$_c$ ~ 3 K in Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ arises upon intercalation of Sr into the layered topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Here we elucidate the anisotropy of the normal and superconducting state of Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with angular dependent magnetotransport and thermodynamic measurements. High resolution x-ray diffraction studies underline the high crystalline quality of the samples. We demonstrate that the normal state electronic and magnetic properties of Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are isotropic in the basal plane while we observe a large two-fold in-plane anisotropy of the upper critical field in the superconducting state. Our results support the recently proposed odd-parity nematic state characterized by a nodal gap of $E_u$ symmetry in Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Superconductivity, pairing symmetry, and disorder in the doped topological insulator Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te for x $\geq$ 0.10

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in the superconducting doped topological crystalline insulator Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te was measured down to 450 mK for two different doping levels, x $\approx$ 0.45 (optimally doped) and x $\approx$ 0.10 (underdoped), bookending the range of cubic phase in the compound. The results indicate no deviation from fully gapped BCS-like behavior, eliminating several candidate unconventional gap structures. Critical field values below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented. The introduction of disorder by repeated particle irradiation with 5 MeV protons does not enhance $T_c$, indicating that ferroelectric interactions do not compete with superconductivity.

An increase in $T_c$ under hydrostatic pressure in the superconducting doped topological insulator Nb$_{0.25}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

We report an unexpected positive hydrostatic pressure derivative of the superconducting transition temperature in the doped topological insulator \NBS via $dc$ SQUID magnetometry in pressures up to 0.6 GPa. This result is contrary to reports on the homologues \CBS and \SBS where smooth suppression of $T_c$ is observed. Our results are consistent with recent Ginzburg-Landau theory predictions of a pressure-induced enhancement of $T_c$ in the nematic multicomponent $E_u$ state proposed to explain observations of rotational symmetry breaking in doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ superconductors.

Robust odd-parity superconductivity in the doped topological insulator Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

We present resistivity and magnetization measurements on proton-irradiated crystals demonstrating that the superconducting state in the doped topological superconductor Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (x = 0.25) is surprisingly robust against disorder-induced electron scattering. The superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases without indication of saturation with increasing defect concentration, and the corresponding scattering rates far surpass expectations based on conventional theory. The low-temperature variation of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ follows a power law ($Δλ(T)\sim T^2$) indicating the presence of symmetry-protected point nodes. Our results are consistent with the proposed robust nematic $E_u$ pairing state in this material.

Evidence of nodes in the order parameter of the superconducting doped topological insulator Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ via penetration depth measurements

The low-temperature variation of the London penetration depth $λ(T)$ in the candidate topological superconductor Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (x = 0.25) is reported for several crystals. The measurements were carried out by means of a tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) technique in both field orientations ($H_{rf} \parallel$ $c$ and $H_{rf} \parallel$ $ab$ planes). All samples exhibited power law behavior at low temperatures ($Δλ\sim T^2$) clearly indicating the presence of point nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The results presented here are consistent with a nematic odd-parity spin-triplet $E_u$ pairing state in Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Charge-screening role of $c$-axis atomic displacements in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and related superconductors

The importance of charge reservoir layers for supplying holes to the CuO$_2$ planes of cuprate superconductors has long been recognized. Less attention has been paid to the screening of the charge transfer by the intervening ionic layers. We address this issue in the case of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, where CuO chains supply the holes for the planes. We present a simple dielectric-screening model that gives a linear correlation between the relative displacements of ions along the $c$ axis, determined by neutron powder diffraction, and the hole density of the planes. Applying this model to the temperature dependent shifts of ions along the $c$ axis, we infer a charge transfer of 5-10% of the hole density from the planes to the chains on warming from the superconducting transition to room temperature. Given the significant coupling of $c$-axis displacements to the average charge density, we point out the relevance of local displacements for screening charge modulations and note recent evidence for dynamic screening of in-plane quasiparticles. This line of argument leads us to a simple model for atomic displacements and charge modulation that is consistent with images from scanning-tunneling microscopy for underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$.

Detailed magnetic and structural analysis mapping a robust magnetic C4 dome in Sr1-xNaxFe2As2

The recently discovered $C_4$ tetragonal magnetic phase in hole-doped members of the iron-based superconductors provides new insights into the origin of unconventional superconductivity. Previously observed in Ba$_{1-x}A_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (with $A =$ K, Na), the $C_4$ magnetic phase exists within the well studied $C_2$ spin-density wave (SDW) dome, arising just before the complete suppression of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order but after the onset of superconductivity. Here, we present detailed x-ray and neutron diffraction studies of Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.10 \leq\ x \leq\ 0.60$) to determine their structural evolution and the extent of the $C_4$ phase. Spanning $Δx\sim 0.14$ in composition, the $C_4$ phase is found to extend over a larger range of compositions, and to exhibit a significantly higher transition temperature, $T_r \sim 65$K, than in either of the other systems in which it has been observed. The onset of this phase is seen near a composition ($x \sim 0.30$) where the bonding angles of the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers approach the perfect $109.46^\circ$ tetrahedral angle. We discuss the possible role of this return to a higher symmetry environment for the magnetic iron site in triggering the magnetic reorientation and the coupled re-entrance to the tetragonal structure. Finally, we present a new phase diagram, complete with the $C_4$ phase, and use its observation in a third hole-doped 122 system to suggest the universality of this phase.

Emergence of coherence in the charge-density wave state of 2H-NbSe$_2$

A charge-density wave (CDW) state has a broken symmetry described by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The conventional view, based on clean, weak-coupling systems, is that a finite amplitude and long-range phase coherence set in simultaneously at the CDW transition temperature T$_{cdw}$. Here we investigate, using photoemission, X-ray scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy, the canonical CDW compound 2H-NbSe$_2$ intercalated with Mn and Co, and show that the conventional view is untenable. We find that, either at high temperature or at large intercalation, CDW order becomes short-ranged with a well-defined amplitude that impacts the electronic dispersion, giving rise to an energy gap. The phase transition at T$_{cdw}$ marks the onset of long-range order with global phase coherence, leading to sharp electronic excitations. Our observations emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations in strongly coupled CDW systems and provide insights into the significance of phase incoherence in `pseudogap' states.

Double-Q spin-density wave in iron arsenide superconductors

Elucidating the nature of the magnetic ground state of iron-based superconductors is of paramount importance in unveiling the mechanism behind their high temperature superconductivity. Until recently, it was thought that superconductivity emerges only from an orthorhombic antiferromagnetic stripe phase, which can in principle be described in terms of either localized or itinerant spins. However, we recently reported that tetragonal symmetry is restored inside the magnetically ordered state of a hole-doped BaFe2As2. This observation was interpreted as indirect evidence of a new double-Q magnetic structure, but alternative models of orbital order could not be ruled out. Here, we present Mossbauer data that show unambiguously that half of the iron sites in this tetragonal phase are non-magnetic, establishing conclusively the existence of a novel magnetic ground state with a non-uniform magnetization that is inconsistent with localized spins. We show that this state is naturally explained as the interference between two spin-density waves, demonstrating the itinerant character of the magnetism of these materials and the primary role played by magnetic over orbital degrees of freedom.

Dirac Fermions and Superconductivity in Homologous Structures (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m,m = 1,2

A newly discovered topological insulator (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=2, has a band gap of 0.5 eV, the largest value ever reported in topological insulators (TIs). We present a magnetoconductivity study of the Dirac electrons of this compound in the quantum diffusion regime. Two dimensional weak antilocalization was observed and identified as destructive interference caused by the Berry phase of this topological state. We find that the phase coherence length of the Dirac electrons is independent of doping and disorder levels. This provides proof for the absence of backscattering arising from the protection of time reversal invariance in TI (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=2. We further report that the homologous compound (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=1 is a superconductor with a transition temperature Tc = 1.7 K. The related structures of these two phases allow lateral intergrowth of crystals to occur naturally, offering an opportunity to observe the Majorana Fermion state at the boundary of two intergrown crystals.

Universal features in the photoemission spectroscopy of high temperature superconductors

The energy gap for electronic excitations is one of the most important characteristics of the superconducting state, as it directly refects the pairing of electrons. In the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors (HTSCs), a strongly anisotropic energy gap, which vanishes along high symmetry directions, is a clear manifestation of the d-wave symmetry of the pairing. There is, however, a dramatic change in the form of the gap anisotropy with reduced carrier concentration (underdoping). Although the vanishing of the gap along the diagonal to the square Cu-O bond directions is robust, the doping dependence of the large gap along the Cu-O directions suggests that its origin might be different from pairing. It is thus tempting to associate the large gap with a second order parameter distinct from superconductivity. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to show that the two-gap behavior, and the destruction of well defined electronic excitations, are not universal features of HTSCs, and depend sensitively on how the underdoped materials are prepared. Depending on cation substitution, underdoped samples either show two-gap behavior or not. In contrast, many other characteristics of HTSCs, such as the domelike dependence of Tc on doping, long-lived excitations along the diagonals to the Cu-O bonds, energy gap at the antinode (crossing of the underlying Fermi surface and the (pi, 0)-(pi, pi) line) decreasing monotonically with doping, while persisting above Tc (the pseudogap), are present in all samples, irrespective of whether they exhibit two-gap behavior or not. Our results imply that universal aspects of high Tc superconductivity are relatively insensitive to differences in the electronic states along the Cu-O bond directions.

Doping dependence of the specific heat of single crystal BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

We present specific heat measurements on a series of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 single crystals with phosphorous doping ranging from x = 0.3 to 0.55. Our results reveal that BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 follows the scaling Delta_C/Tc ~ Tc^2 remarkably well. The clean-limit nature of this material imposes new restraints on theories aimed at explaining the scaling. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau parameter decreases significantly with doping whereas the superconducting anisotropy is gamma~2.6, independent of doping.

Doping and Irradiation Controlled Vortex Pinning Behavior in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 Single Crystals

We report on the systematic evolution of vortex pinning behavior in isovalent doped single crystals of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. Proceeding from optimal doped to ovedoped samples, we find a clear transfor- mation of the magnetization hysteresis from a fishtail behavior to a distinct peak effect followed by a reversible magnetization and Bean Livingston surface barriers. Strong point pinning dominates the vortex behavior at low fields whereas weak collective pinning determines the behavior at higher fields. In addition to doping effects, we show that particle irradiation by energetic protons can tune vortex pinning in these materials.

Effect of Fermi Surface Nesting on Resonant Spin Excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the resonant spin excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 over a broad range of electron band filling. The fall in the superconducting transi- tion temperature with hole doping coincides with the magnetic excitations splitting into two incom- mensurate peaks because of the growing mismatch in the hole and electron Fermi surface volumes, as confirmed by a tight-binding model with s+- symmetry pairing. The reduction in Fermi surface nesting is accompanied by a collapse of the resonance binding energy and its spectral weight caused by the weakening of electron-electron correlations.

On the Reconstructed Fermi Surface in the Underdoped Cuprates

The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples the high-Tc superconductor Bi2212 have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the Fermi surfaces in the pseudogap phase of underdoped samples are actually composed of fully enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly small at the anti-ferromagnetic zone boundary, which creates the illusion of Fermi "arcs" in standard photoemission measurements. The area of the pockets as measured in this study is consistent with the doping level, and hence carrier density, of the samples measured. Furthermore, the shape and area of the pockets is well reproduced by a phenomenological model of the pseudogap phase as a spin liquid.

Muon spin rotation study of the magnetic penetration depth in the intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth λab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2Δ/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime.

Observation of a d-wave nodal liquid in highly underdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the electronic excitations of the non-superconducting state that exists between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero doping and the superconducting state at larger dopings in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}. We find that this state is a nodal liquid whose excitation gap becomes zero only at points in momentum space. Despite exhibiting a resistivity characteristic of an insulator and the absence of coherent quasiparticle peaks, this material has the same gap structure as the d-wave superconductor. We observe a smooth evolution of the spectrum across the insulator-to-superconductor transition, which suggests that high temperature superconductivity emerges when quantum phase coherence is established in a non-superconducting nodal liquid.
